    Don't forget that they cant really track how many calories you burn off doing strength training because the relationship between heart rate and calorie expenditure is different from that of doing cardio. So it will in the case of strength training overestimate how many calories you actually burn.

    *How fitness trackers actually work:*
    1. You spend a lot of money
    2. You have a tracker which reminds you everyday to do sport
    3. You start ignoring it
    4. You get fat anyways

    • @TheOneanjel

      haha, I love TNG. Roddenberry's Star Trek series' medical/technical/scientific stuff is based on actual theories and probabilities he researched for the show. Sadly, many articles that compare modern devices to the tv series believe it's the other way around -- that technology today is mimicking the tv series. Wouldn't that be like saying Roddenberry had an IQ of, like, 186? LOL. Fitness trackers are actually based on the early prototypes for real tricorders.

      Same question

    • @sammymorini9748
      @sammymorini9748 8 років тому

      Simple: RAM is small bucket, Virtual RAM (the HDD/SSD) is big bucket. Put small bucket into big bucket, now fill small bucket with water (the running applications)... eventually that small bucket will overflow (aka you used up your fast access RAM) and begin to fill the big bucket (slow access) without losing any water.
      in layman terms: it's just a secondary storage space to store running applications when your primary runs out or is getting to its limit. Secondary storage is much, much slower.

  • @fitterniti
    @fitterniti 2 роки тому +2

    I find it odd that medically speaking people discount heart rate completely w.r.t trackers when it comes to other activities like lifting weights or even riding a motorcycle. Your heart rate is the main measure of how much exertion is placed on your body whether still or moving or moving on the spot. Sure they may be off by a bit but it's not some massive 50% difference that you're going to notice. This theory aligns with all the numbers I've been tracking so far.

    • @zap_collection6511
      @zap_collection6511 Рік тому +2

      Heart rate doesn't measure strain on your body, just your heart. Heart rate is not a good indicator of physical activity. While certain activities that require you to be active, like lifting weights, or more alert, like riding a motorcycle DO increase heart rate, so do a lot of other things that don't require any effort.
      For example, I can raise my heart rate by 30 BPM when I'm sitting on the couch watching UA-cam. I can achieve the same level of "aerobic" heart rate as someone on a brisk walk, without actually engaging in any exercise. All I have to do is drink some beer and sniff some cocaine.
      The function of the heart is to transport oxygen, CO2, and various molecules secreted by the muscles and organs around the body and deposit them where they need to be. You can think of it like the post-office. The heart pumps blood, which goes around picking up all the messages sent by one part of the body to another, and delivers them to the address on the package.... Along with all the junk and spam injected into the system from 3rd parties, like caffeine, alcohol, and pollutants.
      During aerobic exercise, you aren't necessarily exercising your body as much as you are your heart and lungs. That's why it's called AERObic exercise. Your heart is a muscle, and aerobic exercise is like doing high reps, low weight strength training. You don't build mass, but you do build endurance. When you do cardio for 30 minutes or longer, you're increasing the hearts endurance. More endurance means more blood flow, which means more oxygen, less c02, and better response time to chemical messengers. When you improve your heart health, you increase the amount of time you can do moderate, sustained physical activity.
      During strength training, your heart isn't being worked in the same way. Sure, lifting does raise the heart rate, but it's done in short bursts. Not only that, but the role the heart plays in lifting vs cardio is quite different. During cardio, the heart is working to scrub co2 and supply oxygen. Your body is smart, and when it detects a certain level of co2 in the blood, the heart goes into oxygen mode. It will constrict veins going to non-vital organs, and expand those going to the lungs and heart in order to increase the speed at which the blood reaches the lungs where the co2 can be expelled, and replaced by oxygen.
      This doesn't happen immediately though, it takes the body about 20 minutes to "switch" from a resting state to an endurance, cardiovascular state. If you've ever practiced any sort of long distance running, you'll be very familiar with this transition and how it feels. This is also what produces the effect known as the "runners high," since the restricted blood flow prevents chemical messages from reaching the muscles as efficiently. As you run longer and longer, the pain signals from your muscles (which are electrical and travel instantly) trigger the release of endorphins. Since the blood flow is restricted, fewer endorphins are able to reach the muscle. The pain signal keeps being sent, and the brain continues to reply by signaling the release of more endorphins. Eventually, they build up in the blood stream producing a somewhat euphoric effect.
      In some males, after a long enough period of cardio, this change in blood flow can cause the prostate sphincter to relax, due to lack of pressure. It's more common while using weighed arm bands, or carrying weights during a run. Doing so puts more demand on the core muscles to stabilize the body, increasing blood flow the abdomen. The most efficient way to increase pressure in the abdomen, is to reduce pressure to the genitals. In certain cases, this can cause the runner to release seminal fluid. Some individuals will also experience a true orgasm.
      But none of that is going on during strength training, at least not to that level. During strength training, your heart is focused on 2 things - supplying energy to the muscle, and removing lactic acid. Even if you go from set to set to set with minimal rest, your body will not respond in the same way it does during cardio. During strength training, what you're doing is tearing muscle fibers. Your heart is playing damage control. Yeah, your heart rate is gonna go up - but for completely different reasons. Your body is signaling pain, and your muscles are being damaged. Your heart responds by modifying blood flow to reach the site of injury. Unlike the cardio response which takes 20 minutes, the response to tissue damage happens within a few seconds of injury. Special proteins in the blood attach to the broken tissue and sort of make a scab. After that, mitochondria begin absorbing and expelling calcium from within the muscle tissue. Then, several hours later, after the injury has stabilized, microphages are released that eat away the scab left by the proteins, allowing the tissue to regrow stronger.
      So no, heart rate isn't very important during strength training, because you're not exercising your heart. What you're doing is destroying thousands of tiny fibers in your body, and relying on your heart to provide the components necessary to fix them.

    • @fitterniti
      @fitterniti Рік тому

      @@zap_collection6511 that's an incredible depth of information. Thank you for all of the details and taking time to type it all out 👍🏻 I know that if you're not an averagely healthy individual, your heart rate can be up just by sitting and doing regular stuff. I also understand that you can forcefully spike your heart rate by doing various things. What you CANNOT ever do however, is to push your hear to spike continuously like that without actually doing it or yourself harm or stressing yourself to the degree where you cannot continue to sustain it. Period.
      Caffeine, redbull, energy drinks, heck even sex will amp your heart rate high and continuously. So does viagra too. But just because one is Humpty Dumpty away in bed doesn't mean they're burning 600 calories like the watch says it is. This is why watches aren't the most accurate at measuring your calories. BUT. They are the most consistent per person. They're also not THAT far off from actual calories burned. A maximum of 15-20% as per some studies if you possess the niche/peak devices in the market today. That's because they don't only measure the intensity of blood flow through OD methods but also use different wavelengths of light to do the same. They also use geolocation positioning to measure movements and subtle movements as well like that of your in correspondence with your body and the other parameters along with it to make many tiny calculations to give you the results.
      I also did this research on myself once. To calculate my calorie in/out and other parameters and estimate by when I can lose X amount of weight if I did Y amount of calorie burning (as per the watch). Interesting thing is I was off by a 12% margin by the end of 6 months. I'm going to repeat this again and kick start my fitness journey with more data to monitor. Let's see if the watch stands up to the consistently (slightly off results) or fails utterly 😅
      As of today we unfortunately don't have better more efficient or accurate means of tracking. I consider smartwatches the same as weighing scales. Not the best at what they do to tell us how much we did or how much we lost. But they get the job done just about enough with just about enough consistency to keep us going on a certain path of progress. They're by no means the DEFINING solution nor metric we should focus on but, they're what we have now. And the only Main measure of what we possess to scientifically predict things.
      Unless you're rich and well to do - that's a whole different game altogether. Research clinics and niche hospitals do possess the equipment to track it to the tee with O2 consumption, CO2 expulsion, heart rate, etc. Wish I could have one at home 🤣

    Calories in/calories out doesn't work anyway. The body adjusts its resting metabolic rate to account for extra calories coming in or being burned (or fewer on each). It takes a huge swing in either direction to affect your weight that way. The main advantage to exercise comes in different forms for different exercises.
    Weight lifting and resistance training builds muscle, which increases your metabolic rate and your body's ability to burn excess sugar quickly, as well as extra fat when your blood stream isn't flooded with insulin. Walking and sprinting decreases your insulin resistance, decreasing the effect that an insulin response has on your weight gain.

There is no smartwatch that measure this to be honest but yeah, is nice to know how much you run when you go for a stroll I give them that. I always like those old school odometers back when I spend all my time on a bike.

    i don't know why, but monitors that use electrical impedance just plain don't work. the data always ALWAYS just looks like raw input from an accelerometer. no problem with the ones that use light, though.

      It varies by the water content, so if you sweat more the impedance drops no matter how fast your heart is beating.

    thanks for explaining nothing you literally said everything they do and just a few things about how they do it but just the basics that pretty much everyone knows it lights up when I'm checking my heart so no shit it uses late to do that maybe get a little bit more complex and explain how the sensors really work I don't know maybe I just know too much about these things but I came to learn more and Now I'm moving on oh yeah sorry for being an asshole I'm just not in a great mood the milk machine what am I saying the milkshake machine was being clean at checkers so I couldn't get a milkshake how about you clean the milkshake machine when you're closed and if you're 24 hours open and you don't close there should be a specific time when you clean the machine and everyone should know this so they don't go there and ask for one and get pissed off when you can't make it but yet you have ice cream that's weird

    1:30. not realy. they dont messure how much blood its flowing, ther messure if its flowing or not (aka pulse). also they messure the oxygen level. witch isnt realy importand for fitness - if ure not klimbing mount everest or suffer from COPD.
