    Reffering to credit card forgery, I've read about a very interesting theft in Poland. Some thieves made a special small chip they put on actual chip in the credit card. It would behave as basic gateway bertween ATM and the card, but when asked about PIN code, it returned always positive response. So it occurs that the PIN is checked only on card (obvious), but the rest of the communication isn't blocked behind a PIN number (it is huge gap in security as it should forbid the actual transaction if it didn't record the PIN).

    New fangled chip cards? We've had them in the UK for more than a decade...

    • @wapted
      @wapted 7 років тому +10

      Yeah... well... America didnt have the chip and pin card readers that
      have been used everywhere in the UK since the early 2000s until
      recently. Even now, many places in the US do not use chip and pin
      machines, the case is similar for canada.
      Seems so strange since they have been used in the UK (and the rest of
      Europe) for over a decade.

    • @MylesPribeg

      wapted Canada has had it for a while now, at least where I live. They also commonly use NFC which is really nice for Apple Pay or Android Pay as basically every machine works with it now.

      I was about to post a command along these lines, never even had a bank card with the magnetic strip, I'd wondered for a while why they seemed to rare since swiping the card looks so much more convenient than chip and pin, didn't know about the security issues at that time though. :P

    • @MylesPribeg
      @MylesPribeg 7 років тому

      Natasha McEwan Swiping was actually less convenient because you had to sign the receipt. Also do you actually not have a magnetic strip or just don't use it?

    Brazil currency paper money has holograms, two-and-half dimension painting, microscope printing, watermarks, security threads, if you stick together the two end sides of the same note together they combine, shine under UV and the size of the paper changes according to it's price. So I think forgery is more of an issue than I thought

    I got a counterfeit bill once. Got it back as a 5$ from A&W (Canada), guess they didn't know they had it in their system :p But I went to buy something from the convenience store down the block, and they have this thing that scans bills to see if they're real. They took my 5, and put it on the scanner and the whole thing just turned from blue to purple instantly. When it was pulled out, all the ink just changed colour permanently :p The lady gave it back to me and asked for another, and told me to get rid of that 5 because it's fake. So I switched it for a real 5 from my foster mom :p

    There's also another technology used to prevent banknote forgery - Polymer Notes.
    Australia was the first to use polymer banknotes starting with our Bicentenary (200th year) $10 notes in 1988, then starting in 1992 we replaced all of our notes with polymer ones beginning with the $5 (and full set by 1996 with the $100 that year), as is one of the few countries with the technology to produce polymer notes for use. Canada moved to polymer notes in 2011 with the help of Australia to do so.

    My mom once had a Citi card that used MasterCard PayPass RFID. It wasn't until the new one she got after that a few years ago they switched to the chip.
    Even more so, Target has had the chip inserts years before other stores ordering them.
    Not to mention how stupid it is that some stores already have the slots for the chip cards, but they have been disabled since they got them years back. What's worse is that those same places buy new ones rather than jus enabling the feature.

      If you do. You can just say you got that money as exchange somewhere else right. I mean, you're not an expert that knows how to tell fake money from real money.
      That's how it works in the netherlands. homeless pay with lots of fake cash they exchange it for real money that way, and if they get cought they just say they didnt know and they can leave again.

      Even though Linus is in Canada, this video was more focused on the US viewers. I live in Canada and I don't remember when was the last time I saw anyone use the mag stripe on a card (I'm 20 years old). We had chips for as long as I can remember and for a few years now, NFC is becoming our new favorite payment method.
      Mag stripes are still used for prepaid credit cards and company credit cards though, but they're rare. (I work at a gas station... I see a lot of cards every day lol)
      In the US though, they are just catching up to 15 years old technology and are only starting to use the chip instead of the mag stripe. They seem to like fraud :P

    Money is insanly easy to counterfeit. All you gotta do is buy some 75%(+) cotton paper, a lazer printer, some basic photo shop skills, and a dryer (to give it that rough fill). Then go to your local ball park or w/e and buy a few hotdogs with a $100 bill (fake) and keep the change (real). do this a few times per game and your solid. The trick is to not get greedy.

    Cool video. Didn't see the mention of the fancy hidden patterns in money that make it literally impossible to scan. Most scanners will just literally stop scanning when they detect it. And photoshop will kill the file if it catches the pattern in too perfect an angle.
