hey Linus as someone that works in this specific field for a major Canadian airline I have to say you did a really good job on this video. keep up the good work.
Dielfon Elettab Show off? Hardly! My Brother in law who lives less than a mile from me can get up to 250Mb/s and all the speeds I've said are WiFi to my phone...
They wouldn't really be able to spy on you much more, it's just providing faster internet to people, and in more places, so pretty much it's just 4G, or something, but more speed, and available more widely, and you could go to the top of mount everest and get a connection. Also why do people care if the government spies on us, yea it feels creepy, but 1) it finds people doing illegal things, which I'm fine with, but people who do those things aren't. 2) they can't possibly spy on everyone, then watch what they are doing, the u.s government had 2.8 million employees in 2009, even if that's 5 million and ALL of them were constantly watching the rest of the population (318.9, in 2014) that would be about 65 people per person that works in the government, and they would have to watch all of them. 3) A lot of what they find is probably something that you'd be willing to tell anyone, like your favorite youtuber, etc, They already have information on a bunch of things like taxes, name, address, etc. Honestly I don't care what they know about me as long as they don't give it all out to everyone.
FatalicGamer Exactly. I hate when people use that argument. I mean. Imagine a real life scenario where a secret service agent just stood there in the corner of your living room watching every move you do. Even if you're not doing anything wrong. You certainly don't want someone watching you all the time either.
Yea, they should have a reason for spying on people, it's creepy, and again they can't possibally spy on everyone. If I had a choice of them spying on me, I would choose no.
I never understood why so many people complain about air travel, as the introduction of this video highlights. Sure, you can drive from NY to LA- I’ve done it when I had to move, but it took a WEEK, had to get multiple hotel rooms, had to spend a LOT on gas and food, got a flat tire, almost ran out of gas in Utah where there were no gas stations for over 100 miles, etc. You are literally sitting in the sky at 38,000 feet in an engineering MARVEL, getting from point A to B in a matter of HOURS instead of DAYS. Sure, security is a pain, but usually it’s only 10-15 minutes. Sure, you have to sit in a rather small seat next to strangers, etc. But COME ON!! Air travel is so convenient and fast compared to driving. It completely boggles my mind how ungrateful most people are for aviation, the engineers, the baggage handlers, the flight attendants, the ticket agents, the gate agents, the pilots, who have dedicated their lives to this incredible form of travel- not to mention the SAFEST form of transportation. Sure, things go wrong occasionally, but there’s over 200,000 flights per day worldwide. The media swarms on any mishap. Oh and I forgot to mention- yes, you have WiFi on board since people have absolutely no attention span longer than a goldfish these days.
That would require a brain. Kind of a tall order in this day and age. Instead we have people literally saying "Yes! I can watch Netflix in 1080 while I fly!!"
I am a RF/microwave engineer, meaning I design the amplifiers Linus is talking about and deal with these frequencies and transmissions a lot. I have a few critiques. First, Ka and Ku bands are just pronounced with the two letters, e.g. K-A. The a stands for above and the u stands for under, and they delineate above or below the K-band, which is 18-27 GHz. (The bands get quite confusing actually) Second, moving from Ku- to Ka-band will get more bandwidth due to the higher frequency (Usually the same percentage of bandwidth is attainable, so moving up gives you more), but it will not save you power. As you move up in frequency, amplifiers and antennas get physically smaller, but the efficiency of transistors decreases. So for the same output power, moving up in frequency will cost you more DC power. Lastly, the amplifier does not weigh much at all, and the antenna probably doesn't either. I doubt size or weight is that big of a concern for the construction of the plane (but I'm not certain). Hope this helps a little.
512 KB/s is very suitable for streaming actually. I had a 100 KB/s Internet a while back and UA-cam 480p was still fine (although it was called HD back then). I think you mean 512 Kilobits per second, in that case nvm.

puru yeah that's normally the case (uppercase B = bytes, lowercase B = bits), however "Kbps" is almost always kilobits per second, regardless of capitalisation. I have no idea why :P
Actually it's writer 512 KBPS(in the illustration) so that is a 4mbps line and that can be fairly usable to stream even 720p video mostly. However 512Kbps would be unusable to do anything besides light browsing

what if he actually meant megabytes? it would sound stupid to say that high numbers as hundreds of megabytes in megabits and it would sound stupid to say them in gigabits too
@@apodexse 100 megabytes is almost a gigabit internet connection. 100 megabytes isnt impossible on airplanes it just probably takes some time to develop so fast speeds on an airplane wifi connection
I was on Southwest Airlines a few months ago, and they had on-board services to watch certain TV shows that were aired that same day (on your phone), so I'm not sure if that's the same thing, but it is a very nice thing to have on an 8-hour flight.
I've always wanted to know HOW could they make calls from their cell phones on 9/11, but your phone wont have service NOWADAYS? Were they flying THAT LOW to have reception?!?!
I can usually get a cell signal for quite a bit of the flight, not at cruising altitude but for a pretty decent amount of time after taking off and before landing.
Colin Ambrose yeah... it works for a minute, then goes out... so that's what makes me wonder if they were flying kinda LOW for a while so people were able to call loved ones... maybe?
Jeremy Williamson Depends on flight route, they have to stay within a set flight altitude for a reasonable distance from the airport for ATC coordination and what not, that also may be the altitude range for wireless phone towers, after switching of control and reaching cruising altitude however, only the airplane antenna and SAT phones are able to maintain connectivity, cell phone antennae just aren't sensitive enough by that point
my ipad gets enough signal at cruising altitude to browse the internet (not video) on most flights i have been on my phone gets enough signal to send and receive text messages but only if i am holding up to the window and if the tower is on that side of the plane the best way to get cheap and usable internet on a plane is to plug 3G/LTE USB dongle into your laptop with an external antenna wedged between the window and window shade using a jacket to hide the cable and enjoy using your limited data cap while the other suckers are paying for slow and expensive inflight internet just be careful the FA doesnt see you setting it up because it is against regulations
Great video, the only thing that really annoyed me was when you talked about fuel consumption, the hose that was connected to the aircraft was for air conditioning. Not for fueling. Fueling at most aircraft happens in the wings
Eh, just wait until the hyper loop is a thing. Never would have to ride a plane again :p There are obviously instances where you'd still NEED to, but at least you can jump half way across the country a little easier.
Aviation Hub HD Not impossible, just unrealistic. Its completely possible, thats why people actually waste money on the bullshit. But its way to expensive, and dangerous.
Hyperloop is a new way to move people and things at airline speeds for the price of a bus ticket. It's on-demand, energy-efficient and safe, people must invest in it.
Actually well north of 100 megabytes per second. Ka-band systems are well proven on cruise ships with thousands of passengers and still allowing a bandwidth of 3+ megabits per second per user.
I flew across the US twice over the holidays. Got about 1.5-3Mb throughout both flights. It was enough to stream UA-cam and Crunchyroll so I didn't complain.
People need to understand that internet is not synonymous with broadband. In some cases it is a privilege to be able to communicate under unfavorable circumstances. It's important to make good sense, when you're on a plane you do not expect to enjoy a whirlpool and then rest in a comfortable king size bed so do not expect to be able to watch videos in 4K resolution. Only those who are aware know how difficult and expensive it is to transfer large amounts of data between an airplane and a communications satellite.
Really cool TechQuickie, just a few things caught my ear as I was listening. It's "K" "U" and "K" "A" Not "cah" or "cU". It is only "new" in the sense that airlines are just now making use of it, we've had this tech for as long as Satellite Communication has been a thing, Airlines are just now starting to make the leap. And it isn't KU Bands that are holding Airlines back from higher data rates, its the fact that they have to upgrade their equipment to get the higher data rates and KA is a much more stable band / less countries are using KA Band so there are fewer blocked frequencies, and when you have to upgrade equipment anyway why not change to a easier band to use if the price is pretty much the same.
***** coz apparently no one in my house thinks its reasonable to get a higher speed since they can still get online and being faster doesn't make a difference.... for god sake i'm watching youtube on 144p and that is when only one computer is using the internet. but then malaysia is a islamic country in a way
@techquickie @3:19 when you mention fuel costs. That picture is not a fuel line, but an external air port to add conditioned air (heated or coolled) to the cabin while the plane is off
how to airplane wi fi you take car battery which it a 12 volt battery so it 12 volt. you take router an you take It cord an ya strip it an ya fuckin put it on battery terminalz an you fuckin take modem phone line shut an jam it In router port an you it have wi fi an
These speeds you name... Our LTE is at about 35Mbps and it is amond the best internet in South Africa. Of course, you'll never get anything to actually work at that speed
Qantas just has huge hard drives full of movies on their own network. Last I checked there were 1200 movies and I think 10,000 songs as well as in flight wifi. (The inflight wifi only worked on the Tablet things in the seats though.)

Colin Ambrose yeah... it works for a minute, then goes out... so that's what makes me wonder if they were flying kinda LOW for a while so people were able to call loved ones... maybe?
Jeremy Williamson Depends on flight route, they have to stay within a set flight altitude for a reasonable distance from the airport for ATC coordination and what not, that also may be the altitude range for wireless phone towers, after switching of control and reaching cruising altitude however, only the airplane antenna and SAT phones are able to maintain connectivity, cell phone antennae just aren't sensitive enough by that point
my ipad gets enough signal at cruising altitude to browse the internet (not video) on most flights i have been on
my phone gets enough signal to send and receive text messages but only if i am holding up to the window and if the tower is on that side of the plane
the best way to get cheap and usable internet on a plane is to plug 3G/LTE USB dongle into your laptop with an external antenna wedged
between the window and window shade using a jacket to hide the cable and
enjoy using your limited data cap while the other suckers are paying
for slow and expensive inflight internet
just be careful the FA doesnt see you setting it up because it is against regulations
MWB Gaming WOW i've never thought of that... haha that's awesome!
no pre-roll ad? is this even linus media group? o.O
Great video, the only thing that really annoyed me was when you talked about fuel consumption, the hose that was connected to the aircraft was for air conditioning. Not for fueling. Fueling at most aircraft happens in the wings
FYI the "fuel hose" going to the airplane is actually an AC tube to cool the inside while parked at the gate.
Eh, just wait until the hyper loop is a thing. Never would have to ride a plane again :p There are obviously instances where you'd still NEED to, but at least you can jump half way across the country a little easier.
Frankie Dingleberry Yea, can't wait to ride one, already being built here in Dubai.
keep waiting buddy lmao.
Too bad the hyperloop has been debunked and proven to not be possible.
Just download whole internet smh my head
/S
I read somewhere that the whole Internet is about a few yotta bytes
"Smh my head"
Shaking my head my head 🤦♂️
/s is only for reddit normie
"514 kbps? All right" then I immediately look at my speed while watching the video and saw it was 240 kbps
it's K-U band not 'ku' band
Aniket Dembi yep.
Aniket Dembi same with K-A not "ka" it was bugging me too.
Yes, the "smartest" new tech kids say "Uhff" and Vhfff" instead of U H F and V H F! go figure!
Just thought I'd get that off my chest😂😂
wait, you mean 100megabits per second or 100megabytes per second?
Haha, that was also my question.
100 megaberts per second! ;)
I would assume he is talking about megabits per second
Actually well north of 100 megabytes per second. Ka-band systems are well proven on cruise ships with thousands of passengers and still allowing a bandwidth of 3+ megabits per second per user.
Awesome thanks for the input!
Final Destination? Seriously? :P
Hey TechQuickie, That photo at 3:19 talking about rising fuel costs, is a picture of the ground air conditioning, Just and FYI
so did anyone else notice that at 3:20, that's actually the ground air conditioning duct, and it's not even turned on.
Batteries as fast as possible
dildo racing as fast as possible
Mr. ManDudeGuy Vroom vroom. LADIES (and gentlemen) start your engines!
0:43 wtf is on the screen?
512 KBPS and i have 256KBPS... latin-America
where?
Venezuela
thats 2 mbps
1 Mbps, Brazil here :/
Same here in Indonesia :'(
I flew across the US twice over the holidays. Got about 1.5-3Mb throughout both flights. It was enough to stream UA-cam and Crunchyroll so I didn't complain.
can you give me some info about how can i get some source about the aerodynamics of installing wifi on an aeroplane
final destination ohhh i member
I member when that comment section wasn't full of I members
MrAntieMatter ohhh yeahhh I member comments
ohh i love toto africa
100s of megaBYTES per second?
360 video explained please
People need to understand that internet is not synonymous with broadband. In some cases it is a privilege to be able to communicate under unfavorable circumstances. It's important to make good sense, when you're on a plane you do not expect to enjoy a whirlpool and then rest in a comfortable king size bed so do
not expect to be able to watch videos in 4K resolution. Only
those who are aware know how difficult and expensive it is to transfer
large amounts of data between an airplane and a communications
satellite.
And it isn't KU Bands that are holding Airlines back from higher data rates, its the fact that they have to upgrade their equipment to get the higher data rates and KA is a much more stable band / less countries are using KA Band so there are fewer blocked frequencies, and when you have to upgrade equipment anyway why not change to a easier band to use if the price is pretty much the same.
lul plane internet is faster than my home internet. 3mb/s
I have 150mbps
@@OskarP2601 ok millennial
Nithin Nayani ok kid
Wow you look like Linus tech tips
He is.
Inflight WiFi is faster than on the ground WiFi because planes are closer to the cloud
Wesley Chalmers lmao :)
@woficnwoap ohyeayea I'm so dead
@ 03:20 that's not a fuel hose connected to the fuselage. It's preconditioned air for cooling the cabin
ill just download 5 of techquickie videos and watch them on the airplane and i will not worry about the wifi anymore.
Ummm. My internet at home is 512kbps :( it has never once gone above 200Kilobytes per second 😓
Pyjamas987 - Clash Royale and more Get youself an ethernet cable if your more than 1 door away from your router
i have 100 mbps
240mbps here, but sadly only 24 upload, shitty Irish upload speeds.
800mbps up / 800mbps down
same, and i manage 240p for majority of my online content. Though it could stream 360p :/
*Cries cuz i have a 512kbps internet*
Hubert Moneng walmart
*laughes cause I have 1 megabit internet so I feel superior to you*
pathetic
He says: "512kbps internet" , probably means 512 kBps, 'cause 512 kilobits would be kinda... nothing
***** coz apparently no one in my house thinks its reasonable to get a higher speed since they can still get online and being faster doesn't make a difference.... for god sake i'm watching youtube on 144p and that is when only one computer is using the internet. but then malaysia is a islamic country in a way
Are you actually complaining about 500 kbps?
HHAAAAAH
boy I have 30 kbps and I'm living the dream mate
ONG OMG OMG WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!?
I litterly have 150mbps
You should also make a video about Airplane Mode, and what happens when you turn it on
@techquickie @3:19 when you mention fuel costs. That picture is not a fuel line, but an external air port to add conditioned air (heated or coolled) to the cabin while the plane is off
5 MBPS is slow?
My internet connection is 1 MB and the speed I get is half of that.
Dwayne Johnson RIP
are you from India by any chance?
I have a 900kbps download speed internet and I'm in Canada. RIP.
Dwayne Johnson You will be sharing 5MB/s with bunch of strangers
Mike Messiah Close. Pakistan. :D
When I get anywhere near 16kbps on my phone when I exceed the limit of 1GB/3mo I'm so happy. You complain about 5mbps. k.
Bartosz Olszewski I hope it improves for you. I get 60mbps here in the uk on 4g.
The better internet you get there's no going back. Atleast for me.
thanks for explaining. I used to think airlines just want to rip off customers by capping data in flight. Turns out they have genuine reasons.
my iphone finished updating while watching this and that made be as satisfied as finding this video
how to airplane wi fi
you take car battery which it a 12 volt battery so it 12 volt. you take router an you take It cord an ya strip it an ya fuckin put it on battery terminalz an you fuckin take modem phone line shut an jam it In router port an you it have wi fi an
Mr. ManDudeGuy best wifi comment ever 😂👌
I have no friends
Ha
Wait, 500kb/s is slow? Umm... What's average intenet speed where you live?
Kaleb Bruwer lol they have 1Gb/s
The average internet speed in USA is at least 4 Mbps, and Linus and his team have at least 100 Mbps
These speeds you name... Our LTE is at about 35Mbps and it is amond the best internet in South Africa. Of course, you'll never get anything to actually work at that speed
Here in Austin, Texas, I currently have 200 Mb/s speeds.
Qantas just has huge hard drives full of movies on their own network. Last I checked there were 1200 movies and I think 10,000 songs as well as in flight wifi. (The inflight wifi only worked on the Tablet things in the seats though.)
Those things never worked for me, I just download shows on Netflix before the flight for entertainment
Don't complain when you have 512kbps. I got 220kbps. FML
Gauthier Plantevin same
Roblox Hackers this is why mommy doesn't get you any phones
next time dont use comcast
There was no internet in my day...
lol
Grandma with an Inhaler ur old 😂
On my flight overnight from Portland to Charlotte I watched UA-cam videos in HD the whole time! I was thinking it was because no one else was awake...
4:31 For those that don't have time to use the lavatory, there's FreshBooks.
Lmao, the sarcastic comment of "500 mgbs" is funny because... that's the speed of my at home connection...
how have I not found this channel yet?
so you are telling me that internet is cheaper and faster on an airplane than it is where i live? AIRPLANES HERE I COME
Linus says he can't connect a lavatory to his sponsor at all, And then immediately says "have you ever rushed against a clock"? Come on Linus that was so easy!
Was this the first time ever that Linus couldn't link a word with an ad ? Damnnn
