Wavy Cuts are So Annoying on Woodmizer LT15 Sawmill

  • I start getting wavy cuts on my Woodmixer LT 15 sawmill when I start milling a large incense cedar log. I will show the quick way that usually works to fix wavy cuts. See how much good cedar lumber I get out of these largest of the rotten logs.
    Here is the video where I salvaged these logs from a tree that has been down for several years. In my small scale logging operation I am using a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 40 tractor with a farming 501 winch.

    Podnah,
    This West Texan is admiring you from afar.
    Your no nonsense just get it done way of working would fit right in here at the Baird Texas Ranchitto.
    Your use of Snatch Blocks to snake stuff to where you need it warms this Ex Roustabouts heart.
    I like yer Style.
    Well Done, Sir.
    Well Done.

    I really enjoy the education and sarcasm all in one!!! I also enjoy how much forethought you put into your work so as to not waste any moves and work safe and efficiently by yourself. Thanks for the content!

    Thanks for the tip about the drive belt tension as an additional factor in wavy cuts. I have an LT28, and one other cause I've found for wavy cuts is if I get a big log on and bump the adjustable roller guide on the bark, it can get out of adjustment.
    If you mess with big logs like the second one a lot, get yourself a Logrite peavey/cant hook with their big sized hook on it. The extra hook length/curve makes a much more effective tool.

    Learning about tension and compression from you and others has helped me avoid some potentially dangerous situations just cutting my firewood. Thanks. Good job!😀👍

      Yeah you have to especially watch out for compression and tension when cutting trees and bucking logs. Be safe out there.

      Thank you Steve. I have never been to the Adirondacks. At least not more than just quickly driving through. After seeing some of the sawmill channels there, seems like some good folks there and I would like to sometime.

    Not an overall bad amount of lumber from that could have been more, but oh well. Thanks for taking us along..😁👍

      It was probably more of a fun project than it was productive but I had an idea it would be that way.

    I thought you got a lot of nice boards out of those two logs. I am glad to see you back milling again. Take care!

      I can picture them looking good that way. They are partly rotten but they would probably last a while up in the air like that where they can dry out when it’s not raining.

    Good video Wilson. I had guessed that your idea to try was setting the toe boards to match the taper angle of the heartwood.

      I don’t know what’s going on with the deer. Ever since I got back from being away this summer, they have been somewhat scarce. Usually they have their routines and they are around a lot. They are noticeably acting different now and not around as much. I am starting to see them a little more but not like usual. I thought maybe there was a cougar around. If there is a cat around they are usually easily spooked, but now when the deer are around they seem pretty relaxed. I don’t know what’s gotten into them.

    Considering how crappy the logs were you got a lot of very good lumber out of them. I probably would have left the logs in the woods..............and missed out on the good lumber.
    Good video; except for the toeboard incident that I won't mention...........you know; glass houses/ throw stones kinda thing.

      It was better lumber than I was expecting. In this case it wasn’t the case of forgetting the toeboard. It was more of a case of being a little lazy and not taking the time to calculate how high I needed the toeboard to be. One of those, I’ll just cut into it like this and see how it looks then adjust. It probably would have been less work and taken less time if I would have just measured and set the toeboard right.

    Cool video. Is that the cedar they make chest’s from? Smells so good.

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  9 місяців тому +1

      I think the more common traditional cedar they use for chests in the US is eastern red cedar. This is incense cedar but I think all the cedars that I have smelled smell good. I would be happy to have a chest made out of this type.

    Have you ever cut any large and long Doug Fir beams. If so what is the longest beams you have cut?

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  9 місяців тому

      Not very large. The biggest ones that I remember were only 6x8x10. Most of the Douglas fir I have milled are my dead and dying trees or smaller trees that I am thinning out. Most of those are too small and or not straight enough to efficiently make big timbers.
