So many of our stunning bands/artists were told to go overseas to ‘make it’ and so many treated badly. Cold chisel came home, wrote a clear message to the record execs (the song “you got nothing I want”) and were here to be loved, enjoyed and inspired by the Aussie fans. The world lost out because of ignorant record execs. Australia valued the home grown talent and the fact that videos from decades ago are now being reviewed and revered speaks for itself. Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi!!!
And the rest, Australian Crawl, Men At Work, Angels, Saints, Divinyls, Oils, Sunnyboys, Split Enz, Crowded House, Mentals. We were so spoilt. I just saw Crowded House supported by Teskey Brothers supported by Julia Stone in November. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G night in a park in Canberra, in Canberra! And Nick Cave in the same month.
No one would have ever thought a harmonica could be a main instrument. Except for “Blowing in the Wind”😊. This is right up there, but in a different sort of way. Billy Joel also used it effectively in “Piano Man”. It’s an underrated instrument. It sort of reminds me of the use of the flute in “Land Down Under”. Obscure instruments getting some recognition over the vocalists.
One of the greatest live performances by any band ever. This is real music, check out “when the war is over” live from this same gig for something a bit different
I did say the other day that the harmonica player alone, would blow your Sox off. The Bow is as you pronounced it and yes, this is waaaay up there in terms of being a brilliant live performance. 😊

NZ was given a choice to join but they never answered yes or no. Until 1994 Kiwis and Aussies didn’t need a pass port to travel between the two countries. Under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement introduced in 1973, Australian and New Zealand citizens are able to enter each other’s country to visit, live and work indefinitely, without the need to apply for prior authority. I’d call it ear candy. Loved your enthusiasm for our beloved Cold Chisel with Jimmy (Barnsey) on vocals at the very beginning of this song, and Ian (Mossy) on vocals and guitar. I agree that David Blight’s contribution on harmonica provides that extra brilliance that takes the performance to an extra level. No holding back though for the other band members, Steve Prestwich (RIP) on drums, Phil Small on guitar, and Don Walker on piano. All of which are Stella writers and musicians. Just received an update on the fan page l follow , John is in hospital with a respiratory infection but is comfortable and well cared for posted by Mrs Wheatly on behalf of John's family.
I never understood how the world didn’t embrace Cold Chisel. I was fortunate to see them play an impromptu tour warm up gig at Parra Leagues Club, it was either 80 or early 81. It wasn’t advertised. There were no lights. Just the band and about a half full auditorium as the only ones who knew were those in the club that night, or people who’d heard through word of mouth that day. I worked there and was picking up my pay when an announcement was made on the club’s PA system. I immediately rang a mate off a pay phone (of course it was pre mobile phones. What I witnessed was two hours of music and chaos beyond description. All of their songs up to the Circus Animals album, covers. Jimmy Barnes leaping off the stage and running along the tables that were still there from Bingo and kicking all the glasses, bottles and beer jugs out of his way, then jumping into the middle of the crowd - all this with the old cord mic and the roadies trying to keep the cord intact. He smashed into the shoulder of my mate on his way back to the stage. What a night!
If you want to see one of the best live performances ever check out Cold Chisels Wild Thing from their Last Stand, mindblowing. Another unique live performance is Country singer Kasey Chambers covering Eminem’s Lose Yourself playing the banjo would you believe. I’ve never seen anything like it, and it sits in my opinion up there with the original.

Another Aussie here- Cold Chisel are an institution, and as much as Jimmy Barnes is an Aussie icon it's the guitarist Ian Moss who is a true legend.

Let's not forget Steve Prestwich (RIP) and his song writing and drumming.
