which works for me. i ended up trading in some stupidly old phones for the Nord N200, and I see Google will give me more than I paid in taxes for the Nord. Seems like an easy trade in deal for me.
I feel like they removed the laser autofocus to cut off those $50 so they can reserve that feature for the more expensive 6 models, and then being able to launch a new 6A model with Tensor in the future adding those $50 back to the price, or even $100 dollars and still make it cheaper than the 6
No I guess auto focus sensor didn’t cost that much, i guess it about 3$ to 6$/pies But just imagining if they can sell 100000 units of this…… How much money they will save? 300000$-600000$ That why !
The reason they're able to cut price is because it never costed as much as to go for $500 in the first place. The 2020 releases included at $350 Pixel 4a and an upgraded version of that, which they really needed to separate in price, so that people looking to buy the 4a wouldn't look at a $450 Pixel 4a 5G and struggle to pick which one to buy, only to end up looking for alternatives to Pixel. When there's multiple offerings, there is always price separation, which doesn't have to reflect the manufacturing costs at all.
I know this is just a small update but I REALLLYY like the direction to add waterproofing to the A series. That's literally the only thing that keeps me in the premium line of pixels

Agreed, but I went to the google store site and there's no mention of that missing laser autofocus on the 5a. Does that mean the 4a5G will be a better camera phone? And another thing not mentioned for both the upcoming 6 and 5a is what type of storage, if any, these upcoming models will get for Google Photos. This is the main reason for my wanting a pixel in the first place.
4a's camera quality is the same but it would be the better focusing camera. How much of a difference? You would have to make/watch a comparison video to know that. Bigger battery is enough for me to go for 5a
The Pixel 4a was my perfect phone, if it had water resistance. The Pixel 5a has water resistance, and doesn't cost me leventy billion dollars. I ordered it immediately, already have received it and migrated. Couldn't be happier. My phone is a utility, not a toy. Even as a tech person, I no longer care about the "latest and greatest" specs. I care about stability, reliability, a good name, and good support.
If the 5a was the 6a, I'd happily get it. My contract ends in October though so the 5a will just be a bit too old for me to commit to on a new contract. My 4a has been great, less powerful, worse battery and slower than my OnePlus 5T was, but it's all I really look for in a phone. Runs well, great camera and gets updates. The latter two the OnePlus failed on. My 4a has had its own hiccups though and I don't like it. It's fine 90% of the time but I have to restart it every now and then and the RAM is noticeable. I'm kinda stuck because I don't like what they're gonna do with the 6a so I don't know what brand or phone I'll go with.
I'm glad that google is keeping with the A series, I can't wait to see what the future of google is with Tensor. But it's like a car, I'm going to wait a few years until it's cheaper and they've had time to get the bugs out
@@rationalmalluthegamer27 yep late model cars have way more electronic/sensor bugs than previous cars. The mechanics themselves are solid so it’s not an issue.
To me the a series have always felt like the most "google" of of all of their phones. The colorful pastels, the matte finishes, simple design, it all really stands out in today's landscape of ultra sleek glass sandwiches. I hope they keep that alive
Yea , that's how I feel about most of Google's products tbh. They are different than the crowd and the a series has just been the best fr. My favorite back of a pixel was the 3 / 3a with that single camera setup and the not pink color 😩. Good thing I was able to get a nice case with my 5a . And on another note google makes the best cases for it's phones. No company comes close to that
Even with a matte finish or simple metal back, I do wish they had a wider range of colours to liven it up a bit. Sometimes their design choices don’t feel very considered and feels like they’re using excess stock of whatever colour thermoplastic they have left be it black or greenish black

I bought the 4A 5G for 50 bucks and let me say i am very very proud of my purchase only now I am concerned because this one the 5a 5G or 5a and 6 or 6 pro is better and now i am worried i got a bad phone but i really hope the 4a 5G is still good i mean come on i think it is considering the price i got for it on offer up
It's funny when the 5 was released everybody was saying "Google is changing they're strategy to compete in the midrange phones and stop making flagships." Now we know it was because Tensor wasn't ready yet so they had to rush out the 5 lol.
People kept assuming the worst because bad news is more entertaining, but it always felt obvious the pixel 5 was simply a place holder while they worked on a true ( hopefully) flagship
This is a bummer for me as I just got a 4a 5g for a higher price a couple of weeks ago, and would definitely preferred going with this new option as per the extended battery mostly. Overall, it's a decent upgrade in the Google lineup, not affecting the upcoming model IMO.

Actually I think the 4a 5G is still a better deal as after a year, it's price has gone down, probably to 399. So for 50 more, you get water resistance and a bigger battery from already good battery life? Doesn't seem like that much of an upgrade.
You still have unlimited storage saver quality photos on the 4a 5g. The 5a doesn’t have this to my knowledge being they said the 5 would be the last one.
@NotLxrd the difference is that Iphones havent changed much since the X, which released all the way back in 2016. If you look at the S9 vs S21 in the android market, the innovation is real

I really hope the pixel sells too, I know the camera is gonna be a beast but the video aspect has to perform better this year, no gimmicks just amazing performance
How can the pixels sells well when its market availability is a joke? :( Just like this 5a. Amazing phone that many would buy. In fact, i know that my mom would love this phone. But where is it available in? Just US and Japan. Lmao. :(

If it was the regular 4a body that had that treatment, I would have loved this. But the 5G variant (and so the 5A) are too big. The 4A and 5 were so tiny in the hand it was so great. And the 6 and 6 Pro will also be pretty big phones... I'm really disappointed, I expected Google to be the one doing more compact phones after all the other manufacturers stopped doing them...
You say like not seeing a design change is a bad thing, except it's often quite the opposite. When you have a great design that feels good in the hand, why bother changing it. Just so people know you're not a peasant running around with last gen? Because that's the only valid reason I can think of why one would change a perfectly good design.
I have to agree with that, even though I love the new Pixel 6 design the older Pixels settled on a very pleasant design that worked and wasn't fussy. I've used my Pixel 2 for so long because it just worked and I was very tempted to get a Pixel 5 or 5A before they quietly discontinued everything but the non 5G 4A in preparation for the Pixel 6 launch.
It looks like the borders of the screen are the only thing that's changed I think the phones are still the same size. If you look at the video the top and bottom borders on the 4a 5G look more chungus.

To be fair, to answer the "why" question, why not answer it with "why not?". It's a little improvements for people that were, for example, planning to buy a 4A. Now they get a slightly better phone at a lower price. For consumers, it's honestly nothing but a win
@@Tboi2206 kind of makes sense. Two huge markets with average selling prices at or higher than the MSRP of this phone. If anything is is a stop gap phone. Everything including the kitchen sink is going into the Six with the new Tensor chip. Google didn't want to NOT have a new 5a this year but like soo many have been constrained by the chip shortage. In doing this they can have a new limited run of the "a" series using most of the same components from last year. In so doing making it cheaper. As was mentioned next year's 6a will more than likely have a tensor chip in it at a reduced price compared to the 6. So if you need a lower cost phone right now this 5a might be what you are looking for.
4a is a lot smaller, who was thinking to buy it probably is not interested in 4a/5a 5G. They also increased 6 base size, I really can't understand they reasons.

I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
yeah but the processor in the pixel 5a / 4a will not last you for years. iPhones have a much superior CPU which will mean it will slow down much slower over the years.

Ok first of all for your first and second about the iPhone and s series take is the 6 and 6s difference are the processor and mostly material that house their phone, since Apple got a controversy about the "bendgate", they only made the 6s just to make the phone less likely to bend easily like the 6 did and the only same thing Apple has in the X and Xs is the design there are still some changes in the phone like a more powerful process or bigger sensors on the the camera despite the same dual 12 megapixel cameras. Second of all for your third take about the 8 and the SE are those two are different lineups of the iPhones, 8 is a flagship and the SE is a midrange and still there are some changes with like the most obvious one the price from $699 to $399 and other changes are the 1GB extra ram and like the X and Xs is the processor. Im not entirely defending Apple in any means only the part you called out, I acknowledged that Apple has many problems with its products. But so are the Android companies have problems with their products. But the fact that you couldn't bear the criticism the Pixel 5a takes like the phone almost the same like the 4a and adding Apple that you probably hate to comparison that not even closer to what Marques described the Pixel 5a is just sad. The Pixel 5a on paper looks good, but the face that there's the 4a and its the same except the different name just makes me choose the 4a instead the 5a.

I'd buy a 5A if they weren't so expensive....s10e was cheapee

I dropped 4a into the water today.
Now, I'm here for 5a 😭😭😭.

If anything is is a stop gap phone. Everything including the kitchen sink is going into the Six with the new Tensor chip.
That is very true not much difference in iphones each year. I was a apple user for years. I gave my wife my iphone 11 pro max and got a pixel 4XL. I am happy other than the battery life is getting really bad.
I still love my Pixel 4a, going to hang on to it for just a little bit longer. Thanks for the content Marques! I love your videos! :)
I have my 4a as well
Yup my 4a is still refreshing and smooth.
My 4a hanging little bit since morning!! Any idea?
@@vigneshvgss9402 hanging?
@@cobaltblue5523 yes. A lag in performance
Well…
This was unexpected yet very welcome
Really wanted to see this device!!!
I like that design so much! So hope google keeps 5a's design for 6a
I've been looking for a new phone for a month. I bought iPhone 13, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, S21 FE, etc. Finally returned everything and bought cheapest of the bunch, the Pixel 5A - best decision I made. Built like a rock out of metal, flat screen, clean Android, amazing camera, amazing battery, fingerprint reader, aux port, factory unlocked, all for $450.
0:37 Marques: "You didn't forget about it did you?"
Me: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Good
@@damianpaisley548 lol yeah
Metal chasis is a huge improvement, specially with the not-acknowledged-for 4a bend-gate
Bend gate ? Sorry
Why would I buy this vs a 200$ iPhone SE?
@@hia5235 if someone prefer android
@@hia5235 the iPhone SE has ugly bezels, worse camera and worse battery life. Also most ppl prefer android.
now, where would I find the background Marques is using during his sponsored bit?
I'm currently using the Pixel 4a 5G and there are things that are frustrating about it. Especially the overheating issue when livestreaming or just living in California during the summer. So the Pixel 6 sounds really tempting. Even this 5a sounds tempting cuz of the bigger battery and waterproofing. But I'm wondering if I should just wait until the Pixel 6a that will hopefully be running on the Tensor chip as well. Thanks for the informative video once again!!!
Shoutout to the aspect ratio of this video fitting great on our devices lol
Whenever marques upload's a video it makes everyone's day 😁
4a was actually $349 and the 4a 5G was $499 so technically more expensive than the 4a but you do get more for you $$.
But it's actually 5A 5g, they just dropped the 5g branding.
@@timetake5085 well it still has the same chip inside and same cameras (minus auto-laser focus)
@@elinir92 same chip 11 months later.
@@salvadorHombre exactly, the biggest upgrade here, is the battery.
I've only had the 4a5g for a few months, I kind of feel like I'm missing out since they released a slightly better and cheaper phone so quickly, but I'm happy that google's current midrange option is slightly better for the people looking to get it.
5a doesn't have unlined photo storage!! Stuck with the 4a unless you want water-resistance
The only thing you're missing out on is bigger battery, water resistance, and a bigger screen lol tf?
I actually think this would be a nice addition......If it had a 90hz panel!
Yess
90 Hz panel is reserved for Pixel 6 I guess
@@omkarsubakade3020 but why? It has been YEARS since 90 Hz became widely used on every budget. It is not an excuse to not include in this phone that they want to reserve it to 6
Agreed… the omission is weird. And even the U.S has had midrange phones with high refresh rates for some time. The only thing I can think of is to upsell you to more expensive Pixels.
@@skop3569 because even if I have budget, I and most of the crowd would not buy expensive Pixel if I'm getting same screen of Pixel 6 with same 5G, software experience and good battery too. Pixel 6 would fail miserably then
this phone is literally perfect w the extra battery and price point. going to hop into google/pixel because of this
They could've just already started the process long before so they had to just go through with it even though covid delayed it. Couldn't throw out all the hardware 🤷🏾♂️
It's most probably just this.
So excited for the 6! Must be a huge release.
I like the additional battery life and IP rating but would've loved if they added a snapdragon 778 instead of the old chipset...
Yep, my thoughts exactly
I would've loved a Snapdragon 888
@@brixan... buged phone just can't have the latest and greatest chip
And/or 90hz screen
The whole point of the A series phones in pixel's lineup is so they can be a bit of a bumped down version of the flagship handsets. This would just defeat its purpose if it was to have a better processor than the pixel 5.
i laughed so hard at the names of the colors. "mostly black" HAHAHAHA
I just wish they had it on T-mobile so I can JOD to it. It's cheap but still almost $500 after taxes. Can't just fork out that at one time. Great video as usual @mkbhd!
What about AfterPay or ZipPay? Also, what's "JOD"?
@@AtlantisTheLostEmpire JOD is "Jump on Demand" at T-Mobile. So basically after 30 days I can trade in my phone for another device. I do a lot of phone cases/accessories reviews on my channel so that's been one of the main ways I've been able to get new phones to review easily. Unfortunately my channel is not big enough yet to get free review samples so that's what I'm leaning on right now. So if it's like $800 or less then basically I don't have to put any money down and I just pay the monthly payment on it.
I love my 3A. Battery life, water proofing, and cost while maintaining the headphone jack means I'll strongly consider this phone soon.
To answer the "why?" question from a very satisfied pixel 4a owner, the waterproofing, wide angle lens plus the battery upgrade alone make it feel like a worthwhile upgrade to me. I'll almost certainly be rocking a 5a in 2022. Very happy to see the headphone jack alive and well. I'd pay more than they're asking for this.
Exactly what my thoughts were! Love my 4a, would love a 6 but price will be high. 5a seems like a decent update for half the price.
Google:"4a was good lets redesign it for 2021."
Team Pixel:"Nah, next year."
I have a Google fabric case on my 4a5g, I don't care for a metal body and only getting water resistance as upgrade is not worth a buy for me, but for new customers it's amazing.
Yeah same
It will make the 4a (non 5g) more affordable for me and I really wanna get one so I was waiting for that
The pixel looks so good, I'm planning on switching to the 5a from the 3a once it comes out
You can preorder it
Why not 4A
