- 2013 Volkswagen jetta with a 2.0l turbo engine, veh was towed in for a no start concern, and just by the sound of the engine cranking you can hear it has no compression, in this video I will show you how to perform a compression test, and how to identify a cylinder leakage problem using a leakdown tester, also I will show you how to check timing and identify a timing issue using cam and crank sensor waveforms on a scope (known good cmp/ckp sync waveform is needed), I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. My tensioner just failed today. Sucks when you take meticulous care of something and it still bites you. No more VW's for me.
Yea when my 1.8t VW was getting wore out. I just didn't trust these 2 liter motors. So I switched to a to a e90 BMW 330i. which also has a lot of problems but I don't have to worry about putting an engine in it at 50k miles at least.
Tasha Teeling get a man that works on vehicles then you’ll never have to worry about you’re vehicle lol
This motor lost Volkswagen a lot of long-time customers. It happened to my wife's Tiguan at 44k miles and she refuses to own another VW again. I'm sure many others feel the same way.
Thank you for the video! Helped me diagnose a 2008 2.0 GTI. Having a known good signal was key!
05 Jetta I have...Bro..u are spot on! I almost know for sure this is what's wrong with my 1st and last Jetta.
Great step by step diagnostics and would love to see the follow up repair video.
Thanks for watching. I won't be able to film the repair but I will be posting some pictures up on the Facebook page
Nice video & diagnosis. They're pretty easy when they crank like that...the sound of no compression. Merry Christmas Tom!
Yea it's never a good sound lol. Merry Christmas
Except when the sound of the engine is strange to begin with, when compared to the engines you are used to.
Fantastic find tom ,well done.
I want you guys to encourage this young guy . he is the student of paul scanner danner and he is in the right path .
My tsi is at 100k miles and still has original tensioner, original chain, etc but works fine. So I know I need to update some stuff. What should I replace? Tensioner? Chain? Guides?
This just happened to my wifes 2014 Jetta GLI that was purchased brand new with the CPPA Motor. VW lost a class action lawsuit regarding timing chain issues, and was ordered to extend the warranty to 10 years or 100k miles on timing issues. VW Denied our claim because the car was 5k over the warranty period. They would not budge even tho we have been loyal customers and purchased 4 brand new cars from them over the years. I was hoping for a gesture of goodwill repair but nope. We have lost a lot of faith in the brand.
Hope the updated chain tensioner holds up.
Great video! Very detailed and thorough.
Would this cause loss of compression on all 4 cylinders? I did a timing job on my q5 and had something went badly and I have no compression on 1 and 2. Very little on 3 and 180 on 4. I’ve checked the timing chain 3 times now and the marks are perfect. Even the measurements match the factory manual. Even verified with a borescope #1 is TDC. I’m buying a leak down tester this week to see where that leads me. It’s frustrating when everything looks perfect. I did injector seals too. Wondering if those could be not seated properly. It ran decent for about 20 minutes and progressively got worse. Until I ended up with crank no start and no compression. I’m to new to vcds to know how to dig deeper.
Its common for the valves to get bent if the timing jumps too much.
Hello, Do you disconnect your VVT solenoid for your cam / crank check? Thanks.
What is your feeling on comparing the camshaft adaptation phase reading on VCDS to the timing chain “stretching” as far as preemptive maintenance to avoid a jumped timing chain? Spoiler, I read about it on Audi forums and mine is -5.87 degrees with 121,000 miles
Love the information, just a ? If you have this problem would it be better to just replace the engine? I'm sure this job will take a lot of time and $$$. I have this problem with a 1996 Cadillac Eldorado just sitting in the garage.😬 don't know if I should have it fixed or just replaced. Any information would be great.
Now do you have a video on the best way to put it back together
So I don’t have any but valves but the vehicle I am working on is a 2014 Jetta 2.0lTurbo the timing marks are definitely out
Hi Tommy and greetings!!What caused the break? The chain tensioner, Poor maintenance or high milage!? Try to film the repair and Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!! Take care bro...
The chain did not break. But this veh had a low oil level and the tensioner for the chain is hydraulic. Most likely failed tensioner caused this. Merry Christmas
+Positive Lead Diagnostics please 03 kia optima I try to start it no crank up just grinding noises I uploaded a video in my channel please bro give advice
I don´t get it why so many people drive around with low oil level... it happens so often... doesn´t this one have a sensor that shows up a warning light or message when oil is low?
very good video! Was there any damage to the valves in this case? If so, would the only fix be an engine replacement?
yes intake valves were bent, replaced cylinder head and timing chains
My car haves the same problem do know how much repair and labor costs would be
Audi TT making this exact same sound. Won’t start no compression. Been sitting for over a year so gonna have to figure this out step at a time.
So that happened to my VW CC, and how much would that be to get fix?
i love modern engines!
Great video cousin
Thanks boss
Excellent video.
I'm glad you enjoyed
My brother might get a used A4 with the 2.0T. One owner and 87k miles, buying from an,Audi dealer . Should be interesting. I told him to just replace the chain tensioner with the latest revision to try and avoid this whole mess.
I would do the entire chain job, tensioner guides and chain to be safe
and change the oil every 5000 miles not 10000
What worries me is Audi doesn't know if the oil consumption recall was performed. They checked the car though and he for a warranty through Audi I guess for 3 / 36. What ia the typical cost of a chain job on these.
I don't know the exact cost. But it's probably 6 hours of labor and the parts are very expensive. But as a preventative maintenance it's cheaper than a cylinder head plus the cost of the timing components.
What was it mine has 105k miles an started to do this once a week like what is it
Especially with the cam jump “chain”
How much does a job like this cost to replace
Can that leak down tester perform like the Snap on tool? Is it built solid? I'm looking to buy one and thought I'd get your opinion. Thanks!!!
The one I used in this video is a k-line. Works good enough for me
can a timing chain randomly jump without a timing chain tension-er being damaged or broken?
what are reasons why a chain would jump?
Cost?
Look at the color of the oil towards the end when he’s comparing it to camshaft alignments filthy. Most times what happens if people don’t change the oil tensioners wear down and the chain gets too sloppy and then jumps. Same thing on BMWs and Lexus. change the oil every 3 to 5000 tops Use the recommended oil.
Do you guys do mostly vw's? I just see alot of videos on them.
Yes I work at a dealer
tommy had the exact issue today. 2009 2.0 passat or jetta cant remember. sounded funny cranking. 0 psi in all cylinders. found a tsb for the timing chain tensioner failing. how many of these have you done? i work on domestic hardly any vw's!
timing chain jobs....a ton!
awesome vid. would you happen to have a video of taking it apart?
I do not but I did upload some photos to the Facebook page
I could of had a v8....duh!
Wow did not know this about the tsi motor, and I thought the fsi was bad. This puts the icing on the cake. I bought a used 2013 gti. Clean car all the way around, in and out. But this - this is crap. I had 2 mk4 jetta 1.8t. My only issue with them, mostly just age, and some worn bits and pieces. The usual stuff ie, timing belt control arm bushings etc. I still have one left. 1 gone, sold it to get the gti. Ran like a fine oiled machine. No pun intended. 179,000 miles it was an 03. It needed a clutch rear main seal..
Sorry about, but this new gti - wow! What a piece of junk. Should of done more research. Hey VW! Stick to what works. The 1.8t with out the dfi. Go back to what works. If it ain't broken - don't fix it. Maybe I need to get a bicycle. Less drama. It's not about the environment its about saving my sanity and money. This thing breaks down, I'm screwed, and here I thought BMW's were junk.
Great video by the way. I wish I would of seen it before the purchase, I could of dumped it into my 03 Jetta and replaced the clutch. Hey Vw watch the birdie.
Good video bro!
Great Video..
Thanks!!! Best of luck
Thanks for watching
Very nice very professional video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
thanks good vid
Thanks for watching
Another tensioner bites the dust and killed a head
so the problem was a timing issue or what
Problem was a failed tensioner that allowed the timing to jump out of sequence.
My 2014 GLI GEN3 sounded a bit like yours when trying to start it “it doesn’t start at all” and the CEL is only bringing up a camshaft Sensor I replaced it and still nothing I’m at 62,XXX miles is it possible I jumped timing ?
Yeah it’s very possible. Common issue
Positive Lead Diagnostics thanks for the reply and dang I hope not 😞
@@digi_tv Do whatever is best for you!
My fucking engine went i cared for that car some much bro any little problem i fix it 😫 and I maintained it good oil change every 3k and it still went
mine just jumped time changing the fuel pump. I let it run out of fuel and stall out and that was it, jumped time. no compression. typical POS vw, try to fix one problem and something else even worse happens.
Really sucks that the car only has 44k miles
cute
I mean he used to be a scanner danner student
4000$ cost repair
Hi do you have an Instagram or Facebook I can message you on
Just search positive lead diagnostics on facebook
Positive Lead Diagnostics ok I’ve messaged you
This whole video was point less to me.
😂😂😂 i cant see why are you on drugs
2012 CC same issue, and only have about 5k left to pay it off when this happend....smh
Why do I have to be on drugs? I’m just saying it was pointless for me because it’s not what I was expecting.
I have a 2010 audi a4 quattro 2.0 l turbo does not turn on and has no comprecion
I have the same car same problem help
Sweet video, I did one last month, same problem, I did the whole job with new head, when I started it, she had very low oil pressure, I ended up putting a engine it,
Thanks for watching Yea this issue is pretty common on the old and new style 2.0 tsi engines.
Hi i have a question maybe you have heard of it before because no one in my town or the dealer could explain. I have a 2013 Volkswagen CC 2.0T automatic with 55,000 it has a push key, so i start the car for the 1st time of the day i push the key and it starts well. Drives great to where ever i go! I turn it off and few minutes later i turn it on and it starts well again sometimes the 3rd or 4th time i push the key to start it makes a weird loud noise in the front feels like metal crackling and also feels like the engine is jumping! I pull the key out and try it again and it starts fine with no hesitation.
Hi buddy? Wery nice video 👍
What is your Facebook?
I wudlike to see .
Just search positive lead diagnostics on Facebook
Had my 2009 Passat for seven years before this happened. Had a slew of issues for the life of the car, but what really put the nail in the coffin for me was the engine jumping time Bc of the tensioner failing and a slow engine leak coming from the crankcase. I think I was quoted like $9k to fix everything. At that point, the repairs exceeded the value of the car. So after letting it sit in my driveway for a year, I sold it to a junkyard. Loved that car, but it was junk.
This scanner Danner jr?
Nice diagnostic, and merry Christmas 🎅☺
Thanks for watching Merry Christmas
Hi. Have ever came across bad cam crank synchronisation with no TDC fault logged?
yes, I have, ua-cam.com/video/tm3-36EkWGY/v-deo.html
Well done. Thanks for explaining everything so well and for pointing out the failure items.
Your welcome. I think the main failure was the tensioner causing the chain to jump. The older tsi has a screen that gets damaged. I don't think it has it on this style
Mine still starts but has no compression in cylinder 4
Next step would be a leak down test. I’ve seen broken valve springs a few times
Audi A6 4.2 2006 Quattro V8 S-line
How much did this job run
That engine sounds like a cement mixer when cranking. Maybe it is mixing the valves fragments into the cylinder head. Thank you for sharing this diagnostic with us.
Thanks I'm Glad you enjoyed it.
how many miles on the car?
44k. I've seen it happen on the earlier 2.0tsi engines
what part of service info tells you its interference engine
I cant say that I remember reading it, I think in the service manual there are small notes written in red that say engine damage can occur if timing is out or something along the lines of that
