Tony La Russa ruined his career. He did not have to address it publicly and schold him. Yermin could have been a all star but la russa ruined it. La Russa might lead the sox to a world series but man, yermin was doing wonderful and he just made him quit. Awful decison by a manager

It’s a 50-50 for me, yeah la Russa should have maybe thought about what he would say in front of cameras and address to yermin personally. Now days everybody is soft asf you can’t really say nothing because there will be a fit on any way you address a situation. La russa would have been under heat any way he would have handled this particular situation there’s no doubt in my mind. It sucks but that’s the way it is now days. Now, yermin was tearing pitching up. Did you forget that people are scouting? I knew he would get into a slump sooner or later. Everyone does. He just had to adjust to what they were throwing him. Teams studied him and cracked him, simple. He was way too busy on the spotlight getting all the attention that he forgot to study pitchers. So no you can not blame this on la russa at all. Prove me wrong!

Has absolutely nothing to do with TLR. I’m a Sox fan and he has been playing at a below average level before being sent down. This white Sox team is trying to compete this year and if you’re not able to contribute to the team you will be replaced. Simple as that. Yermin couldn’t handle being sent down so he had a fit on Instagram.

Easy and false narrative which falls apart by a quick glance at the statistics. For the month of April, Mercedes was one of the best offensive players in baseball, hitting .400 with an OPS over 1.000. The 3-0 home run came on May 17, and Mercedes was hitting just .243 in May prior to this event with just one home run since April 18. Mercedes’ descent back down to earth was already well under way

No, LaRussa did not ruin Mercedes career. LaRussa is probably going to take the White Sox to a World Series championship this year. Mercedes could have learned so much about the game from LaRussa if he had just used his head. Instead, Yermin got his feelings hurt and quit! Once he grows up and toughens up, maybe he can handle playing major league baseball and the criticism that comes with it. Until then, he needs to stay gone for everyone's sake.

I mean I don't agree with larussa, and it may have gotten in his head for sure, but what probably is more realistic is pitching found holes in his swing and started to pitch him appropriately and he couldn't adjust. You see it a lot with rookies. They will have a good few months or a good year and then pitching adjusts and they start doing poorly and the great ones will adjust accordingly and bounce back and some people can't handle it. I mean he's 28. He's just now getting up? There's a reason for it. The dude definitely has some talent so hopefully he can rebound and get with another team or something and maybe get a nice few years stretch where he plays some decent baseball but while I think larussa was ridiculous for not backing his guy, that's not going to cause someone to just catastrophically fail.

    • @coachcarter8238

LaRussa is old school, and the last of a dying breed of managers in baseball. He's not going to coddle his players like the rest of these BETA managers are, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have compassion. While I don't agree with him throwing Yermin under the bus, I agree with everything else he did in this situation. Yermin was hot garbage in May anyway, and was sucking before that incident. One month of hitting .400 doesn't make you a great player. He does have an upside. He's got a pretty good bat, but an obvious hitch in his swing that needs adjusting. I was able to tell by the way he swung the bat that he had pop, but couldn't hit a breaking ball to save his life. It was obvious to me even before his average went down. What bothered me most was he believed all the hype surrounding him. "Yerminator" t-shirts?? He even had a freaking BURGER NAMED AFTER HIM!!!! I'm pretty sure this got out to veteran pitchers around the league, and they wanted to make an example of this kid, which they did. He became uncoachable, showing up late for games, and not listening to his coaches' instructions, doing what he wants to do. This is the generation we're in. He is paid to play baseball, and he has a responsibility to his coaches. If he's not going to listen to them, he will lose his job, and there are many ballplayers who are looking to replace his ass. This just happened. Now you have guys like Goodwin, Lamb, a Sheets smoking the hell out of the ball, hitting for contact, and they play defense. All Mercedes has done was hit, and he couldn't even do that consistently. I really hope he does get it together, keep playing well enough in Charlotte to get called back up in September, and I believe that he will.

Yermins problem is he can’t play in the field and we don’t need another DH on the team. Eloy is almost back and it’s looking like Andrew Vaughn has taken his position in LF and Eloy will be playing DH. Also, Gavin Sheets is hitting well and will also be playing DH and RF at times. Being a Cardinals fan, I'm not entirely surprised that Tony La Russa is acting like such a curmudgeon here. He was difficult to work with even while he was manager of the Cardinals. For example, he couldn't get along with Ozzie Smith. In 1996, tensions developed between La Russa and Smith, and Smith retired at the end of that season. Smith kept his distance from the team UNTIL after La Russa "retired" in 2011. I don't know what kind of a person Ozzie Smith is, but from what I've seen of him, he seems pretty easy to get along with. If he doesn't like you, there's something very wrong going on. There was also some bad blood between La Russa and Scott Rolen that contributed to Rolen leaving the Cardinals.
So, it's not just that Tony La Russa's old. Partly. The rest of it could just be Tony La Russa being himself. I'm not defending him, just saying his behavior isn't coming out of nowhere.

4 Reasons why this is absolutely horrible!
    1. When a team puts a position player on the bump, they are conceding the game and saving REAL arms so they can play YOU tomorrow with more tools available to beat your ass.
    2. When a player’s numbers are being considered during arbitration for his coming salary, numbers matter! He is statistically measured against other similar players, every HR, RBI WAR etal. matters at the end of the day (season)
    3. When Tony, a baseball "icon" publicly chit-talks a kid who he is supposed to be protecting from the world, this snub has got to be devastating. We all know Baseball is mental!
    4. When you have a nightmare, and you go wake up daddy to check for monsters under the bed and daddy tells you, “yea kid, there are monsters under your bed and they are coming for you with my blessing” WTF do you think is going to happen?
So screw yet another unwritten rule of baseball. If you put a lollypop on the mound, smile and enjoy the fireworks or go home. Its so stupid.

20 years ago, I played D1 college ball for an old-timer former MLB player like LaRussa. One year, In an intra-squad practice game, I hit a first-pitch curveball farther than I had ever hit a ball - absolute BOMB - and slowly walked to watch where it landed, as I had never hit a ball that hard. I wasn't hot-dogging it or show-boating, I just wanted to see where it landed. I wasn't the home run hitting type of player. Well, my coach came unhinged! Supposedly, I wasn't "respecting" the game. He went off and never treated me the same after that. Sadly, that was the end of my college career for all intents and purposes. I never made it out of his "dog-house". I was, and remained a starter, but after that, my coach found every excuse to pull me from the line-up and mess with my head. One series I went 7 for 10 and won conference player of the week and the next series I started a game 0 for 3 and got benched for the rest of the game and the next. This was my Junior year and I finished 2nd on the team with a .350 BA 1.000+ OPS. I was amazed that I ended with such good numbers as each game was a mental grind. I was told in my exit interview that year that I would have to earn a starting spot my senior year. I ended up calling it a career and didn't return for my senior season. Baseball wasn't fun anymore thanks to this douche coach. Baseball has a huge psychological component to it and when you lose confidence or the confidence of others - especially a coach - it can lead to major slumps. I feel for Yermin. LaRussa needs to go. Some of these old-timers suffer from some weird type of delusions of grandeur complex and want to make themselves feel more important that they actually are. LaRussa definitely has something to do with Yermin's struggles.

First, he didn’t retire. Second, while you can disagree with how LaRussa handled the incident, but if that is enough for Mercedes to completely fall apart and suck, he was never going to make it long term anyways. It’s much more likely that pitchers adjusted to a player who’s got power, but not elite talent, and he wasn’t able to adjust long term. Barring anything major coming out about something he’s dealing with in his personal life, Mercedes needs to grow tf up and keep grinding and working hard to make it back to the MLB.
Plenty of AAA all stars aren’t close to good enough to have a long career in the majors.

Everyone is blasting La Russa for not coddling Mercedes. While I agree that he’s an old school manager and that for better or worse, his style does not mesh with today’s game, ultimately this comes down to Mercedes and his capacity to handle adversity. Now, if Mercedes has legitimate mental/emotional struggles then I hope he receives the help he deserves and returns when he’s healthy. What is also likely is that he just can’t handle tough managing. We’ve all had tough and outright horrible managers/coaches/bosses/teachers/etc and 99.999% of the time not while working the job of our dreams. We all feel like quitting sometimes but usually we don’t and/or can’t. We stick it through, use the negativity as inspiration to work harder and silence those we feel have wronged us. If this is just another public tantrum as this generation of players are prone to display then he can either return, be humble, be great and make us forget this hiccup ever happened. Or he can “retire” and become a footnote for analysts. Again, all the empathy if he needs help for emotional/mental battles. Otherwise… throw dirt in it bro.

Not a fan of La Russa but bottom line is La Russa isn't the one swinging the bat. That incident happened 2 months ago; he hit his dinger, he got plunkted, La Russa said what he said and it's over now. Yermin's in a slump, it happens to a lot of players and no doubt he's been in a slump at least once before during his 9 years in the minors. It could also be that the book has been written on him and pitchers may have found out he has a problem with certain pitches. It happens. Anyway, he's not the first player to go into a slump and certainly won't be the last. Hopefully he'll take a deep breath and get back into the batter's Box and find his swing again.

But since he hasn't really done much to ruin anymore games and since the whole Mercedes 3-0 count ordeal, he now has all the players following him which is key for any ball club. I think the Sox could put any manager in that dugout and they will have huge success, but only a few can get them over the hump.
