  • One of our ball pythons hasn't started to eat. We attempt to feed her a few times to see if she starts eating on her own. After her not eating the first thing we try is to assist feed. Matt shows how we assist feed a ball python.

When he says don’t do it after you watch this video but you’re desperate and need your weak lil pied baby to eat. I did it. He ate the pinky no problem. Thank you for the video it helped me in the process

divinelotus19 he’s doing great! He’s no longer needing assist feed after that and is a good eater on his own when it’s feeding day, assist feeding didn’t make him aggressive or anything he just didn’t like his head being touched.

Oh thats good to hear. I have a baby that is on his 3rd week of no feeding. I tried braining it and he doesn't want food. He came to me healthy and ive seen him dehydrated, wrinkly skin, and lost grams.

    • @miepkiritsun8338

divinelotus19 yeah that’s how mine was getting before I assist fed him. I tried braining too and he just had the same reaction only a slight bit interested but he didn’t take so that’s when I resorted to assist feeding. It was kinda difficult because he would move and twist his body and there were times I thought he’d bite me but he just opened his mouth and I lightly put in the mouse head and nudged it on his upper fangs so that it stayed in his mouth, then I put him back in his tank to eat on his own and it worked

Thank you so much for putting this video here! We bought what we didn't realize was basically a hatchling who had never eaten before from Petco, and I have been pulling my hair out trying to get him to eat. No striking, nothin'. Almost four weeks now, and a week since he's shed, too.
He didn't even fight me on this. It took him about 3 seconds to decide what I put in his mouth was food and chomp chomp it was gone.

I’m so glad to hear your feelings about the lives you create. When we first got our Normal, I wondered what happens to the male Normals that breeders don’t really want or need. However, the more people I talk to or watch, the more I hear most breeders say that every life is worth saving. It’s so good to hear that. I believe strongly that every life is worth care and respect.

My mentor needed to assist feed a killer clown female for 6 month until she took food on her own. As soon as he entered the room with her rack, she balled up as tight as she could. It is a bit sad, but he didnt want to give up on her. She is a very aggressive eater now, and when my mentor enters the room, she is waiting for him with a metaphorical "i love mice"-bib around her neck :-)
Thanks for this video, my very first clutch hatched this week, hopefully they will all eat on their own

    • @TheCharleseye
      @TheCharleseye 6 років тому +8

I love it when those people start spouting about "natural selection." We breed these animals. We put them in temperature/humidity controlled environments. We select their meal size and frequency. We choose their mates and when they're going to breed. We take their eggs and put them in incubators.
We minimize natural selection as much as possible, wherever possible. To use natural selection as an argument to give up on any animal in your care is bad enough. To claim that a _breeder_ should do so - when their entire purpose is to minimize natural selection - is just asinine. They might as well be arguing that my car broke down because "Mother Nature said so."

Thanks so much for this video! ❤ First-time snake owner and my ex-husband got a newborn ball python for my daughter at a reptile show (on impulse) and she is refusing to eat. Force-feeding is a last resort, but I will attempt it before I let this sweet little thing die. Apparently, the breeder shouldn't have sold her so young. We are learning valuable lessons, but I hope so much it isn't at this baby's expense. The number #1 lesson is to do the research before you buy. They went to get a lizard and came back with a snake. AND, lost the breeder's card so I have been unable to contact him with my questions. It's been quite a stressful situation, but informational videos like yours help so much. Peace & Love🥰

Ty for teaching, Especially new pet parents. I have a hatching who has not taken to eating. I finally did an assist. Was able to move pinkie down enough that it was easy as pie. She was much calmer than your baby there.
I also had 'Patty' who i had to force, assist feed for 2 years before she began talking on her own. So folks watch this video...learn. a snake will allow it self to starve. If you are not educated in this area and are not comfortable with it..DON'T DO IT. TAKE YOUR SNAKE TO A VET. AND LOVE IT ENOUGH TO BE PREPARED TO GIVE IT TO SOMEONE WHO IS EDUCATED AND ABLE TO DO THIS.

I cannot thank you enough for posting this video. After two years of begging, I bought my daughter a young ball python. She’s only eaten twice in several months. We took her to a vet who told us she was underweight and although we were doing everything right, she couldn’t go any longer without eating. She fed her with a syringe and gave us some feeding advice. Two weeks later and still not eating. I was planning on returning her to the pet store (where I was informed was a terrible place to get a snake) but my daughter really loves her and begged me to keep trying. So I finally came across this. I tried it, and she easily took the mouse. It brought me to tears. Thank you! You’ve made a little girl very happy.

I have to thank you for posting this, back in January, I had to assist feed my son's ball that we purchased from a pet store for Christmas last year -- we were not told that she was requiring help to eat. I am so so sorry that happened. Losing one always sucks. The "love" for the comment just let's me know I got to it and it wasn't negative, not for what happened. Hopefully, the one bad experience doesn't push you away the hobby. If you can go to an expo. It will likely be cheaper. Pick one that is already at least 150 grams or so, much higher survival rate.

As a long time subscriber, I know this video is almost a year old, but I had to assist feed my 2 baby "normal" Ball Pythons. Thanks to your video, I was successful with both of them. They haven't eaten in almost a month, and started to lose weight, and get the wrinkled skin look. Yes, they are ONLY "normals" but, I bought them because I thought they were beautiful little snakes. According to some people, I should just let them die and get something different. I bought them because I liked them. That's the reason I bought them!! I owe it to them to do everything I can to give them a long, healthy life, and that's what I intend to do. Keep up the great work you do, and keep making these great lifesaving videos!!

Knowing how to assist/force feed a snake is probably one of the most use full tools to have in a snake keepers tool box, for not only babies but also sick snakes. I recently adopted a sick snake, it has mouth rot and I had to assist it in positioning the mouse due to its jaw being swollen. I personally think every snake keeper should know how to do it.

I swear you guys have a video for everything 😂
I've got a sub 250g female ultramel that I bought a month ago- immediately upon bringing her home I suspected that she had an uri and got her to the vet to confirm. We did antibiotic shots for two weeks before going back due to lack of improvement. They think she has a strain resistant to their usual drug, so gave me an oral med and meds for nebulizer treatments. I've been doing those for the past two weeks and have made good improvement BUT I can't get her to eat!
She ate a week before the show and confirmed with a poop. I've tried both f/t and live fuzzy rats with no luck.
I found this video while looking up how to assist feed, and tried a fuzzy mouse since I thought it would be easier on her. She immediately spit it back out twice, two times she worked it all the way back until all she had to get down was the tail- and then she'd throw the whole thing back up in a single motion.
The vet confirmed my husbandry was good and I'm on the verge of paying them $60 to assist feed her themselves.
After wanting one for ten years, this ultramel was supposed to be a dream snake but she's turned into a nightmare and a money pit.
    Any advice?

I liked this I wish got to see more of these. I like egg cutting and feeding videos. I know UA-cam don’t want you to do live feedings but I find them educational.

Beautiful Job! I know when and if this happens to me your vid has lowered my Anxiety Spike! It's a Big deal! Last month my Pastave laid her eggs, her 3rd time, my first Ever with any I had your video playing in the background as Midwife! Was settling. The folks that say "Oh it's natural don't assist feed" Very Odd, weered to say the least...
Thank you again. FILMING spontaneously can be really Good!

I had to assist feed my baby ball last night for the first time. She hasent eaten in at least 4 months, and I tried everything I could possibly think of and research as much as I could. It was finally time to do so and I’m happy I did it because your right, if I hadent made the decision she probably would not have made it another month or so. She will be assist fed until she finally takes it on her own!

Interesting video. My ball python Ambrose wouldn’t take the food the first two times I tried to feed him. I basically created a corner in his tank, so he couldn’t slither away. I took the mouse in my tongs, then I slowly rubbed it on his nose and he turned his head away. Then I lightly tapped it on his back like 2 times and he turned around and bit it and started eating finally!! I could’ve started jumping and screaming with joy but I didn’t want to disturb him. Ambrose is very chill, but I now realize that he’s a picky eater who needs certain conditions to eat and being dark is one of those conditions haha. Great video man. Wish I would’ve seen this last week 😂😂😂

Thank you ur video was the most helpful my new baby python ate twice for me that was two weeks after i got him and then stopped eating for three weeks while the other one i got ate just fine in their enclosure. The one i watched this video for took it on the first try he lost a lot of weight in that time he refused to eat so I'm hoping now that i help until he eats on his own that he will hopefully gain his weight back

I've assit fed different snakes for years. For some reason I had a clutch hatch than none ate! Thought maybe I did something wrong. My rack is optimal temps my food appropriate size. Not sure why. Thank you for the trick to put upside down! And tugging on to catch the teeth. It's so time consuming but well worth it. Thank you so very much for the tips. These are living breathing beautiful animals. Normals or not. I would treat them the same.

I just got my first bp and he hasnt eaten in 3 weeks and he was already underweight to being with (the breeder said he had eaten for them yet you can feel and slightly see his spine) and he just won’t eat I just don’t know what to do. Your video is super informative (definitely the most I’ve seen) so thank you, if he doesn’t take good tonight I think I might have to try this.. (he’s 6 weeks old so I’m kinda worried)
