We can’t thank you enough, we had a baby ball that wouldn’t eat for a month, we tried this method and she gobbled it up. First ever meal. Such a relief. Thank you!
omg thank you for this! 😭 I've had my baby ball python for over 3 weeks now and have not been able to get him interested in food at all! I was worried if he didn't eat for another week I would have to assist feed him. I got a live hopper and put them both in a small tub. It took a couple hours but I came back and the mouse was gone! I'm so proud of him ❤Thanks again!
This is awesome! I’m so glad this method worked for you, we have had great success with it.
Million thanks my python just ate .. and i am sooooo happy .. i am so thankful
I'm soaking two now and will repeat on Tuesday when I get the live I'm excited to try this.
It's cool to see the many different ways people have come up with to get their snakes to eat. Ball pythons can indeed be frustrating to say the least. Good video with really good info.
Thank you for the advice. I had my first clutch hatch the last of week of May and although they all have all shed, only one has eaten. I am going to try this and see if I can get the rest to eat... 👍
Great advice and Video, i just tried it out and it worked, thank you for sharing this trick.....👍😊👍
Sorry for the slow responses guys, I think I've gotten to everyone now--bear with me and the slow responses, lol. We'll be at NARBC Tinley again in March with our friends at Osborne Reptiles and hope to see you guys there! @The Snake Lab NO U WONT!! Thank the Coronavirus 🤦♂️
I’ve been trying to feed mine for weeks thank you
So how long do you leave them in the incubator with that method ?
Just going to give this a whirl now, got a few stubborn ones. 😎👍
I have a little one that has not eaten yet, tried may things. Going to try this trick next and see if it works
no Airholes???
Thank you man, been having a bit of trouble with my hatchlings
Let us know if you’re still having trouble after using these ya tactics 😀 happy to help!

Got myself a 2 months old Ball Python (80 grams), He spent 4 days in a shipment. put him into a cage, left him alone to de-stress (85F, 65 humidity).I could see him coming out of his hide on the 3rd day. on the 5th day, i put a black baby hamster (10 grams) inside his terrarium, for 30 minutes my baby ball python kept running away as the hamster gets closer. i took the hamster out and tried again 4 days later. after getting the same result.
I started to get worried and tried this method. Same thing happened, hamster gets closer, snake tries to run away, bumping the edge of the lid. Finally after about 30 ish minutes, i heard a squeal, my Baby ball python just decided to constrict the hamster WITHOUT BITING it !!! i think the hamster annoys him soo much that when the hamster gets in between him, he tense up and triggers his instinct.(i left the room, because i read in forum, he'll not eat if he's spooked out), waited patiently and when i came back. the baby hamster is gone!
Thank you so much Snake Lab! i just have to write this. so other worried snake keepers can know too... and btw, i contacted the breeder the next day, and turns put he gave him mouse hoppers. i guess that might be the reason why he isn't eating the hamster. maybe he's a picky eater. but at least for now, i am glad he registered hamsters as meals too . hahaha cheers
That’s awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! We’ve had great luck with this method and hoped that others would too 🙂
Thank you thank you thank you!! I’m a new bp owner and needed this! My new snake hasn’t eaten at the pet store and almost 3 weeks later hasn’t eaten here. Not in shed or anything like that. I’m going to try this method tonight
Did this end up working for you? I’m in the same situation!
Nothing is working with my ball python hatchling. Even the asissed feeding. It's so small I have to be so gentle. I don't try for very long to stress it out.
Good very good video
That seems like a great plan! Thanks! I have some babies I need to get feeding
Oh wow....I'm definitely trying this when I get home!!
Hope it worked for you!
Thanks for doing this video. I have 2 clutches, a total of 20 babies so far that have hatched, and 4 babies weren’t eating. I start off on rat fuzzies. After about 3 offerings of rats, with no luck, I switched to mouse hoppers. 2 of the 4 ate those. I am going to try your small box method on those last 2. Hopefully it works!!!
5am thought:
Can you crossbreed a rat with a mouse?
Mines awake time to go swimming thanks again friend !
I have a hatchling reticulated python that was hatched out on the 5th of may, its shed and pooped so far but wont take food. Most of the time it will be curious but ultimately uninterested/afraid of the crawlers I offer. I've tried live and f/t. Getting a bit worried approaching the 1 month mark. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!
Hey Abe,
So feel free to message on Instagram or Facebook if I dont see your response, but have you tried mouse hoppers? Something with hair that’s really energetic is often the key.
How long can you leave the snake in an air-tite box like that without suffocating it?
Hey Jeff, these boxes are not air-tight. You should never put your animal in an air-tight container. If you look on the underside of most non-gasketed tubs the lid will be elevated above the rim of the tub almost all of the way around by little plastic “legs” (this creates a rather large air gap that’s still small enough to keep your animal from escaping). It’s important to always check first 🙂
I was wondering what is this little guys morph? Very neat colouring...
I like to put a dark towel over the small box. Completely black it out
That's a gorgeous pastel. Is that a yellow belly. Do you still have him and if so, how's he doing?
My little trick is feed at night I wasnt having any luck on her eating and one night I tried at night when she was active and it worked
awesome! glad you got your girl eating!
U know mine would eat in daytime as well I ben try to do night feeding cause he ben refusing to feed last 4 tries . Mine a adult never had this happened till now
I tried this twice and doesn’t work 😭 at least for mine
Not a hatchling, but a very young juvenile (maybe 1 month old) I just bought refuses everything but live mice since the breeder didn’t get her on frozen rats first. Lazy breeders who do not get their snakes consistently on frozen rats before selling and don’t tell the buyer are assholes. Will definitely not be doing that once I start breeding and if I have an extremely stubborn snake I’d let the buyer know. Some people have no decency
That looks just like my Butter Hurricane Possible Het Pied female ball python.. lol.. but anyways thanks for sharing...
Thank you!
Trying your method now 👍
My adult ball python has become stubborn I never had problem feeding him . He drinks water n soaks in bowl.
He always ate Frozen rats. What I hate is wasting expensive feeders. I bout A 20 ct bag from Amazon .at 120 buks a bag u can understand why I don't want to waste them. Last 4 times I tried to feed him an he turns away from the rat. always been a response from him when I bring the rat. To feeding cage.he would always respond by raising up in air ready and be strikes sometimes I got be careful cause he bit me before mistaken my hand as feeder. I always think he responded by smell I tried agitate him by bumping him with feeder one he did respond by coiling around it. Then he realized he can eat it.i just wondering what is this happened I herd about them not feeding.but I never had this problem till now.what else can do? Should I change to smaller mice he normally eats small Rats n take medium rats on occasion. Burmese pythons were easy to feed .course baby burms will eat rte away. As well baby anaconda s which are size of adult ball python s
Great video!!!
Thank you !
Great video man. Thank you so much. Always have stubborn babies. Will definitely be trying this out!
-creeperballpythons
Thanks! I hope it works for you!!
Swimming everyday is necessary for us !
1. Never assist feed. 2. Bathing your snake stresses them out so don't do it unless they are covered in poop or need it for medical reasons. 3. If a snake is eating live, don't purchase it from the breeder. Only buy a snake that is well established on frozen thawed. It's unsafe for the snake to continue to eat live as the rat can hurt and injure the snake severely.
If you leave the snake alone in its tub and give it security, it should eat. They go off food for many reasons and a big one is that they just do naturally. Don't stress and don't assist feed. Another reason is that the temps, humidity, and size of enclosure is not right. It's better to fix all of those thing then to go straight to live. Also, don't take your snake out of it's enclosure to feed. It's less likely to show interest in food and you'll just end up stressing them more out and eat less.
Sometimes you have to assist feed. There are always a few slow starters and I will not let a baby starve to death if it is refusing all the meals. I've had to tube feed one baby and that was enough.
Yeah this video is full of horribly outdated care and husbandry advice.
Hey man, thanks for the video...it was really helpful.
Awesome! Thank you 😀 glad it’s helped!
Hi
This should work on my adult ball pythons! Also what morph is that ball you were handling? Pretty liitle snake!
Lesser/pastel lezzer I think
Is that hatchling a mojave? Any other genes?
Awesome info. Do you poke holes in the feeding box
Sorry for the slow response. I do not. These boxes have pretty loose fitting lids, but certainly check whatever boxes you have.
But before i put the snake back in its enclosure from the water tub do I dry her off%?
Maria, there is no need to dry off your snake. Your enclosure should be kept at proper temps etc. and left to his/her own devices your snake will crawl through its water dish from time to time. Being wet wont hurt him/her-- they'll just dry off. Good luck with your little one! -Mike
The Snake Lab I have another question, my snake does not want to eat and I have done the water thing, I have tiny mice do I need pinkies instead...?
I see your feeding life what about someone that breeds snake and only feed frozen?
Hey! Sorry for the slow response! So feeding frozen "can" work with this method, and many many snakes can be successfully started off on frozen rodents... HOWEVER-- if you're getting the point of concern with a freshly hatched (not necessarily *fresh* but hasn't eaten yet) ball python, I would caution you against sticking to your guns on that practice. It is much easier to transition a reluctant to feed animal to frozen/thawed once they have gotten the hang of eating and how to respond to prey items in general. If they're looking small and/or its been more than two weeks after their first shed, then I really suggest that you try live (assuming your local laws permit). The issue become MUCH more complicated if you let the animal become malnourished. Once the animal has had 4-5 meals and has a good response to prey, etc. then I typically find it pretty easy to switch them over to f/t at that point. I know it's an uncomfortable thing for some folks, but it's certainly not worth risking the life of the animal/your pet in order to be removed from the process (i.e. the rodent loosing it's life). I hope this helps! -Mike
Thank you so much 👍👍
I just got a snake on Sunday so I think that’s really helpful
A ball python
Good video!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
U need ventilation holes and also they need to be supervised while bein fed live.....
Emma, sorry for the slow response! I'm not 100% sure if you're asking a question or if you're flexing on us, but I'll answer this as a question, none the less :) (I'm just having fun, of course). Firstly: No ventilation holes are required in the tubs that I'm using/recommend in this video (the entire perimeter of the tub is vented since the lid doesn't close fully, leaving an air gap that is almost continuous around the perimeter). To your second point: While you are certainly correct that constant supervision is 100% best practice when feeding live-- the rodents that I recommend using here are still nursing and don't have teeth capable of causing damage to (or harming) even a young ball python. I'm sure we could have a debate about it-- but if the process doesn't seem up your alley, no harm no foul-- especially if you have tried methods that work with the stubborn to feed animals of clutches that you've produced *shoot us a link--always happy to learn!* :) Thanks for watching! -Mike
You should always feed rats not mice
Not true, sometimes giving a mouse rather than a rat can be really helpful in getting the snake to actually eat
Are you fucking mad, how can that snake eat the mouse with tiny little room to move
Feeding live is such a terrible advice. Just try assist feeding with f/t as a last resort
Great advice, just had 6 babies hatch 10 days ago
Thank you!
