I really appreciate seeing Curt and him talking about the mice and rats. You can see that he really cares about them, and they look so healthy and clean.
I'd find it very tough to breed up feeders. I'd find myself 'holding back' a lot of them lmao. when I get them frozen I've only seen them frozen. Seeing them all cute and fuzzy is totally different. You can tell from this video how much care goes into these animals though, great job guys
Yeah, I really don't have a soft spot for them they are basically an invasive species in my city and no matter what neighborhood you move to, it could be the cleanest, you are still going to deal with these pest.

One of the best detailed videos on rat sizes and Balls on UA-cam. I have searched youtube for this video and always get left looking for more videos to explain better.
Very informative! I'm just starting out my BP collection and it's a new passion/hobby of mine. I have 7 babies and 1 3yr old. 2 of them eat small FT mice and the rest seem to not be interested at all with those and so the breeders I got them from said they did live rats but wasn't clear on the size. But thanks to y'all I now have a better idea! 🔥👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
great video, i dont think iv ever seen a video where someone shows all the sizes of rats and then shows each rat size for each snake size . i never would have thought it only takes 5 weeks for the rats to get to that small rat size , thats amazing.x
Curt! Thanks for making an appearance 😃 ..you can really tell the rats are being well taken care of- I very much appreciate you sharing your side with us!
Thank you for this post. I have to change from X-large mice to rats now. My BP is eating 2 a week so it time to change. I wasn’t sure of the size to get. When you don’t see the rats in person your not sure what to get. This helps alot
Curt & Matt both-great info! I'm another "failed breeder". I should've known I wouldn't be able to Co2 fuzzy baby animals 🥺 LOVE seeing your snakes and rodent room. Your rats look healthy & clean, and I know it's actual work to accomplish that. Thanks for taking the time!

Once the winter's over and utility costs go down again I might just check with the company to see whether they'll work out a feasible payment arrangement for me. I bet it would be so much easier to clean that way too than these huge tubs I'm currently using. I like Curt's Albino Hairless. I have one that looks very similar named Ruby who is one of my favorites. She is expecting a litter on the 9th, in just another few days. I bred her to one of her grown sons who is het Hairless in hopes of getting some more Hairless babies. Selling some of the prettiest rats as pets has really been helping me pay for their food and bedding which can get rather expensive for 30-40 rats. The odd-eye he talked about is another recessive trait.
You can build a wooden rack system or use a Home Depot plastic storage rack and cut the shelf legs to size for bins. Then attach mesh wire to the top and fit it how you need.
Where's Matt who usually does these? He's a cool guy, and I like seeing him clown around when he answers emails and feeds snakes. Take care and God loves you.
i have a hard time un uk finding live mice because of the pet trade, normal rats are a plenty, and no one sems to sell asfr, it's quite annoying as buying frozen from a pet shop soon adds up, great and helpful vid thanks buddy :)
If people dont like watching live feeding, then they should be watching live feeding videos! But anyways, i watched this video and kurt did such a great job with explaining everything on rats and mice. Keep up the good work curt and matt!
I can’t tell you how much I love this video! I’m getting better at knowing what sized rat would be good for a snake as the snake gets bigger, but it’s hard finding videos on UA-cam about this. This video has been and is very informative and helpful!

Thank you for this video the has answered all my feedinq questions. As always love your videos. I was wondering at what point can I give my snake more than one rat in one session (she's a rescue that was surrendered I'm rehabilitating) she's skinny, dehydrated, mite covered and 310grams at a year and 3 months...she is now mite free, working on getting her hydrated, and fed her first meal of one rat fuzzy. She ate it no strike issues but is still acts hungry.

I find it fascinating how many trays you have and would be interested in a video that explains how much time is required to feed and maintain all rodents.
Grwat video i wish u wouldve told how much each ball python weighed before the fed but great video thanks for sharing! Also What size would u feed a 287 gram ball python? Also a 1,312 and 1,250 gram ball python?
The 287 gram ball bout 30- 40 gram mice or small rat , the 1250 ball easily large rat 170 grams. I know bcuz once had a female under 4ft but just over 700 grams great on live medium 100-,130 grams. So if my 700 gram ball can eat medium 130 grams pretty sure both ya balls will eat 170 gram large rat no problem but try dead first.
So the biggest rat you would give an adult Male BP is a small rat or just that Male? I just got my first snake its 4 yrs old and skinny I'm trying to switch it to rats from mice I was thinking about trying live to trigger the hunt response it wont take the ft rats so should I start with rat pups cause it's about adult mouse size and its slim or should I try the small rat because it normally eats 2 mice at a time

But what a better way t learn then just visit and subscribe to your channel. My passion for BP is out of control. And yes I’m still wanting and can’t wait to bet my bell snake. 2 more months and I will be ordering it. I would love to get it from you but I don’t see that being able to happen. I also am planning on getting a pied snake. They remind me of a s’mores . I love them and I hope to have many more in the future. I will be rejoining your Patreon soon I just ran into problems. I don't remember, did we say there was another part? Or did we say the other part was on patreon? If so, it is behind a paywall on patreon, but as old would be really buried. Every video we do, we have another to go with it there.
Great video. Question. I got a ball python a week ago. About the size of the 2nd or 3rd you showed. They told me to feed small mice and he ate successfully last night. Should I be using rats?
I know it’s sad to kill rats and mice but it’s ok to me because the snakes need to eat I just watched your hate comments video it’s funny your the best UA-cam keep the good work your a hero to a lot of people
So what benefits are there to feeding live over frozen-thawed? I know the first thing to consider is whether the snake will actually eat it (it can be difficult to transition snakes from one to the other), but why would you use one over the other? I'm in the market for a snake (particularly an adorable hognose) and want to know everything I cam before getting him/her.
Typically, prekilled/frozen-thawed is the standard, as it's much easier said more importantly, safer. Live should only be fed if your snake absolutely will not accept anything else. Some people think feeding live is "enrichment", but if you have proper husbandry and offer plenty of branches, space, and other objects of interest, they get plenty of enrichment that way.
@@WobblesandBean That's what I've generally heard, I just wanted to see what benefits there were to live as well. I'll probably feed mine f/t unless she just refuses to eat it (I've heard hognoses can be notoriously picky since they're mostly toad eaters).
I feed live not for enrichment per we, but I have found with a collection our size it has multiple benefits. It is quicker, we have a higher rate of successful feeding, and most importantly less waste. We simply put back what doesn't get eaten. No guessing how many to thaw and having not enough, or some get wasted.
Who knew baby mice and rats could be so cute! Shame their lives have to be cut short(er) to feed snakes, but hey that’s life. That’s what they’re bred to do.
I said the same thing. I had no idea how cute little rat pups were. That's the circle of life though.. snakes gotta eat too, even if their prey is cute lol.
Eww, no! They are so not cute. They're nasty, and twitchy, and just plain gross! Did you know rats and mice are constantly urinating? It's true. They don't have a fully formed bladder like we do. They just dribble piss everywhere. _Everywhere._
@@christofferengevik8 It's their biology, mate. It's objective fact. They don't have a fully formed bladder and since they must constantly chew, they swallow a ton of debris. All that matter has to go SOMEWHERE. Hence, they constantly pee and poop. It's just science.
Not sure if you'll see this or not, but can you maybe talk about the financial side of breeding ball pythons? Like how you handle funds, payments, taxes( applying and filing, if you do). I know some people don't include their profits in taxes but if you do, it'd be very helpful to hear how you manage all of that. Thanks! You guys are great!
Hi guys quick question, is it ok to put 5females and 2males per tub? Will it have the same production of litter per female just like your 2female and 1 male per tub setup? Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been needing to see size references!! So glad I didnt order rat pups. My snakes are not big enough for those yet xD great video!!!!
Do rats generally cost more compared to a mouse of the same weight? Where i purchase them from its about $30 more per 50ct of 13g rat fuzzies compared to 50ct of 13g mice.
What should I be feeding my coast carpet? She is eating 4 live mice from a pet store a week. But is no way big enough for a small rat. We tried one and she got to the hips and stopped. The breeder told me she was of size but it didn’t work out.
Nice video!! What about when a ball python strikes at a rat and the rats head is somewhat free..the snake happens to wrap around its mid-section / legs and the rat bites the snake...what would you recommend?
Hey Luis. If you have them available switch to rats as soon as you can. Your snake is big enough and it will increase the nourishment it receives. Looking at your video and seeing the size compared to your thumb I would say try a rat pup and see how that works out. If you have a scale please let us know how much he/she weighs
Hey guys! just curious if you guys would ever consider packaging and shipping some frozen food to Canada. I havent started anything just yet but I am trying to get sources set up 100% so that when I DO buy my first female, everything is ready to go and Im not running around in a panic finding food sources
great video lots of help i was just wondering my BP has been in hibernation for a while now and has not eatten in a while and that is nornal but lately he as been coming out a lot roaming his tank and he also has started to hiss alot not at me just in general. just wondering if this is a sign he want food. i got him a rat a few weeks back but he did not eat it and dont feel like wasting more $$ on rats right now if he wont eat them. sorry for the rant and thx again for all your videos
Awesome video! I always had issues with this topic; one question: Is the method of the girth useful for a blood python, and if so, do I have to look for a rat size that is equal or similar to the girth of the snake, as you did for the ball python? Thank you!
I'm just curious (always am with feeder sizes) are your rats just very small with really large litters? I know the sizes you're showing are pretty standard for the feeding charts. It's just crazy how small they are compared to the rats that I breed. Ours are usually 18-22 grams by 1 week, 80-95 grams at 3 weeks, and 160-200 grams by 6 weeks.
Olympus Reptiles y’all are lowkey animal abusers that’s like saying hold a snake by it’s snout cuz it’s just a snake y’all are messed up I get they are food but at least give them a good life while u can but y’all aren’t gonna listen cuz it’s the way you have been doing it soo bye
What size would you feed say an 8 month old female that weighs 255 grams? I know u showed what you feed small hatchling snakes and larger snakes, but I keep getting mixed info on what to feed my snake. I got her at 6 months old weighing 100 grams. In 2 months that I’ve had her she is now 255 grams…. But I worry that I’m not feeding her the right size. Any suggestions?
Awesome video but one thing to add would have been nice to know. Curt told us the average weight on the rats for the sizes, to let us know the weight on the snakes you was feeding them to.
I really appreciate seeing Curt and him talking about the mice and rats. You can see that he really cares about them, and they look so healthy and clean.

Right? Can’t they make a Snake Boost shake and let us own snakes with no emotional pain??
Yeah, I really don't have a soft spot for them they are basically an invasive species in my city and no matter what neighborhood you move to, it could be the cleanest, you are still going to deal with these pest.
feeding live isnt too bad, but euthanizing them is pretty hard the first couple times. you get used to it really fast though.

Depends on size of python
Great episode and it was nice to see your rat facility. I wish I had a Freedom Breeder Rack to put my rats in. It is so much more space-saving than the 106 Qt. bin cages I'm using for mine and allows you to keep more of them seperated in smaller groups in each tub. Once the winter's over and utility costs go down again I might just check with the company to see whether they'll work out a feasible payment arrangement for me. I bet it would be so much easier to clean that way too than these huge tubs I'm currently using.

Selling some of the prettiest rats as pets has really been helping me pay for their food and bedding which can get rather expensive for 30-40 rats. I find that I go through about 50 Lbs of Aspen a month and last month I bought a 50 Lb. bag of Mazuri rat food. I was surprised how fast they ate that up!
I really like Supreme Selective Science better as it's more bioavailable, so they poop less, but have only been able to find two places that sell it in semi-bulk. Each bag is only 4 Lb. and those two online sources only sell 4 at a time with a small unit price cut which is not very feasible if you breed. I contacted the manufacturer on their website to ask if they would consider making 25 and 50 Lb. bags. So far have not had a response one way or the other.
Curt might want to contact them too, as I think it is much better than either Mazuri or Teklad. It's made in the UK where people are really serious about rats as show animals and the company is less mass-production oriented so therefore it is more targeted to a rat's nutritional needs as seperate from mice. Seems the Mazuri causes alot of wasteage when most of it just comes out their rear end. I do supplement my rats with oats, vegetables, meat, and some fruit which adds some nutrients the commercial foods do not (such as vitamin K which is really crucial for rats).
Hope Curt will do some more videos on specific aspects of his rat breeding. I find that really interesting and have been learning about the different varieties. The odd-eye he talked about is another recessive trait.

Thanx- i was judging it on my snakes HEAD SIZE!

You want the snakes body size.
That's why the jaw can expand on the snake. It's ment to take larger meals.

I know some people don't include their profits in taxes but if you do, it'd be very helpful to hear how you manage all of that. Thanks! You guys are great!
Hello, we do have a few on that. And we do report our income on taxes. Not worth going to prison over
Hi guys quick question, is it ok to put 5females and 2males per tub? Will it have the same production of litter per female just like your 2female and 1 male per tub setup? Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been needing to see size references!! So glad I didnt order rat pups. My snakes are not big enough for those yet xD great video!!!!
Great info!!
Hey guys great video
How ling do you leave the food in before removing itbv
We don't set a timer, but probably no more than 10 minutes.
Thanks TIME to bump up me snake feeding size
Do rats generally cost more compared to a mouse of the same weight? Where i purchase them from its about $30 more per 50ct of 13g rat fuzzies compared to 50ct of 13g mice.
Mice and rats are so cute though 😭
But I understand that snakes have to eat too. And also, when it’s dead, it’s just a shell, no longer a soul.
Micah Bell THANK YOU!
right on time mate!
I like those snake racks can you provide some info on them .
Snake racks we use have a link I. Our videos
What should I be feeding my coast carpet? She is eating 4 live mice from a pet store a week. But is no way big enough for a small rat. We tried one and she got to the hips and stopped. The breeder told me she was of size but it didn’t work out.
Try a weaned rat
Try a 40gram small rat
Nice video!! What about when a ball python strikes at a rat and the rats head is somewhat free..the snake happens to wrap around its mid-section / legs and the rat bites the snake...what would you recommend?
Give snake something else to bite. Like a pencil, feed tong, etc
Olympus Reptiles deff will try next time, any aftercare for the snake if it does get bit on accident? Or will they be alright?
Thanks for the video. When you leave a feeder in the tub, is there a time limit you go by before pulling the rat?
We don't set a timer, we have an order to ensure we don't miss. But 15 minutes or so
@@OlympusReptiles was looking for ball park figure. Wondered if it was 15 mins or an hour or 2.
@@scottishrob1 as said, 15 minutes
Holy Shit it's Curt!!!
Hey mat when i got my ball python in july the breeder was feeding him hoppers(mouse) but it doesnt show a lump what rat size should i feed him?
No idea without seeing the snake. Just step up gradually
@@OlympusReptiles i uploded two 15 second videos show his food size next to him and a video of how big he is
luis cedillo how big is she or he
@@EmberMcLain23 i did two vids to show his size on my channel
I threw myself out the live feeding part, but respect the education.
Is every snake fed once a week
great video lots of help i was just wondering my BP has been in hibernation for a while now and has not eatten in a while and that is nornal but lately he as been coming out a lot roaming his tank and he also has started to hiss alot not at me just in general. just wondering if this is a sign he want food. i got him a rat a few weeks back but he did not eat it and dont feel like wasting more $$ on rats right now if he wont eat them. sorry for the rant and thx again for all your videos
Awesome video! I always had issues with this topic; one question: Is the method of the girth useful for a blood python, and if so, do I have to look for a rat size that is equal or similar to the girth of the snake, as you did for the ball python? Thank you!
I haven't worked with blood to say. There girth can be quite large though, so probably works a little different
This is a Curt question
Have you been 350 gram rats in how do you get them so big but remain healthy?
Good video
I know they are just food but you really shouldn't yank on their tails and hold them upside down like that if you aren't feeding them at that time.
Well, it is how we do things and will continue.
@@OlympusReptiles that's painful to rats and stressful
Growth sounds good. Rats hips should be same around as snake in the middle
Awesome video but one thing to add would have been nice to know. Curt told us the average weight on the rats for the sizes, to let us know the weight on the snakes you was feeding them to.
Good video 👍🏿
Can a ball python take jumbo rats and at what size in grams will she have to be in her length
I usually don't go jumbo
so if you have a bunch of pinkies can you feed like 3 to a bigger snake or do they only eat one at a time
You could, but better to feed one large meal
@@OlympusReptiles thanks so much appreciate the info.
