The History of Narsil & Andúril, Blade of Kings - Artifacts of Arda
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 гру 2024
- Andúril, reforged from Narsil, was the blade of the new king of Gondor and Arnor, Aragorn, just as Narsil had been the sword of the first king of those realms, Elendil. The history of the sword speaks to the ancientry of the kings of Men in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Narsil and Andúril in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Hey everyone, I am currently making a video on Elendil and noticed an error that I have made here and in other videos that I would like to amend! Elendil's father Amandil was the last lord of Andúnië in Númenor, not Elendil himself. Sorry about the mistake, thanks!
you prolly dont care but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all the latest movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my gf lately :)
@Caiden Kalel Definitely, have been watching on InstaFlixxer for years myself :)
@Caiden Kalel yea, I have been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself :D
When they are disarmed at the door of Theoden's hall and Aragorn says no one is to touch Anduril, he says "Telchar wrought it in the deeps of time", and Gimli approves that it was made by a Dwarf, and is proud to lay his ax alongside Anduril.
legendary quote… i wish we didn’t forget our family history in real life
"Sauron will not have forgotten the sword of Elendil. The blade that was broken shall return to Minas Tirith"
Love reading about the artifacts of Arda; they're like little easter eggs u find in multiple stories:)
Just goes to show u, the gifts passed down by our forebears are valued in more ways than one
I have a foam version of Anduril for larping. It was my grandfather's last Christmas gift to me and I will never part from it.
What an awesome gift. Cherish it always.
A gift from one king to another! 👑
That’s really awesome
What a sweet memory. He sounds like a great man and is still with you…
Yes finally early, and on a topic I love too. God bless you Yostan.
Tolkein describes Narsil thusly: "The sword of Elindil filled Orcs and Men with fear, for it shone with the light of the Sun and the Moon, and its name was Narsil". ~ 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.
The runes on the pommel of Narsil (then Anduril) translated from Quenya, read: "Narsil is my name, a mighty sword. Telchar made me in Nogrod".
The runes running down the fuller of Anduril are Ange'rthas Eregion (' Ancient Elvish Runes') and translate to: "I am Anduril who was Narsil, the sword of Elendil. Let the thralls of Mordor flee me". (The first word at the top of the sword closest to the crossgaurd means "Sun". The last word on the tip means "Moon". Elrond had them placed there to further magically strengthen the blade so that it could never be broken again. (I am a huge Hobbit/LOTR sword collector and am up close and personal with all of the swords, blades, daggers, and knives, envisioned/imagined and created by WETA of course.😉)
Thanks guys, loved this vid!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Do you have more cool info??
@@MuRevo122 Aside from talking your ear off for hours about the weapons, I would be happy to share the translations on the rest of the weapons with runes, Sindar or Quenya.
The Sword of The Lady Arwen (borrowed from her father Lord Elrond of course) was named 'Hadhafang', its Sindar inscription on the beautifully curved blade: "This blade is called Hadhafang. A noble defense against an enemy throng for a noble Lady". Interestingly, one translation of 'noble' in Sindar, is 'Arwen'. So, (only in the movie of course, because 'Hadhafang' only exists because of PJ and WETA), Arwen borrowing the sword of her father, that WAS originally made for and used by her grandmother, Idril, having a variation of her name on the blade, is just kinda interesting to me.
The curved dagger, presented to Aragorn by Lord Celeborn in Lothlorien: "Foe of Morgoths realm".
And last, the blade of Bilbo Baggins, then given to Frodo...Sting: "Sting is my name, I am the spiders bane".
Thanks for the question, loved to share. 🙂
Very interesting. Thank you.
Anduril also glowed elvish light.
@@Sir_Baddington From what I know of the sword from the books and its inscriptions, the sword (as Narsil) was originally forged by Telchar who was a famous Dwarven smith, in the dwarf land of Nogrod. It was not forged by elves. Although it was *reforged* by elves, it was done using the original sword, again not elven. The sword was imbued with elvish symbols and wording (by Elrond) to strengthen it so it would never break again, and it 'shone with the light of the sun and the moon', but if I remember correctly, it did not glow blue when orcs were near.
I never knew Aragorn had Andúril with him that long. Now I have to read the books.
Yes the books are a must read if you only have the movies to go by, the books cannot be beaten when compared to movie.
@DD-fj2ut Yes and no.
Fun video! Thanks!
My wife and I got to see The fellowship of the ring in IMAX 4K yesterday. Your speaking highly of the 4K the other week pushed us to do it, so thanks! It was amazing!
Renewed shall be blade that was broken...
My master Sauron the Great would have liked to see it remain broken...
Yeah well im sure he has a lot of regrets like making you his mouthpiece
That wasn't his call to make, scary dude. And I'm sure Isildur would've liked to see that your master Sauron the Terrible would've dissipated forever, body and spirit. But that didn't happen either.
A big change from the movies, Aragorn carried the blade during the books. Frodo and Sam noted his sword when Aragorn showed it broken. Important to the books, changed by Peter Jackson.
Because Book Aragorn was always on the verge of singing “Oh I just can’t wait to be King!”
It was a bigger moment in the movie precisely because it represented him accepting that mantle when his book counterpart had accepted it years ago.
What the heck good it do to Aragorn to carry around a broken sword in the books? It never made much sense to me, unless he also carried another sword for defense at the same time. It would have made more sense to leave it in Rivendell. Though, I liked the book version of it being re-forged before the Fellowship left Rivendell.
@@robertdendooven7258 he did carry two. He was the protector of the sword that he inherited.
@@robertdendooven7258 he'd whip it out (lol) any chance he'd get. Like at the council of Elrond, when meeting Eomer, or at the the gate of the Golden Hall. It's kinda funny.
@@Longshanks1690 Yeah an unnecessary, contrived "moment".
I always wanted to know more about sword's history, thank you for this content, you are trully men of the west.
Tolkien would be proud of you!
I like these nice, not overlong videos by quite a wholesome channel. Thanks for the good work
Thank you Wayfarer, that means a lot!
@@MenoftheWest You're welcome, have a good day
Not all who wonder are lost - well observed, Wayfarer.
Nice work dude thanks
From Narsil and Anduril we see that no matter the darkness one faces nothing is beyond reforging and remaking.
Tolkien himself would agree. Thank you. We need this positivity these dark days.
Not gonna lie, I was hoping that you guys could have made a shout out to the man at arms reforged episode where they made Narsil, broke it and remade it into Anduril. However I totally get if you didn't see it or weren't aware of it. I'm coming from a position that I'm an aspiring/amateur blacksmith who is also a big nerd and that particular episode is one of my favorites and most informative as well as memorable.
Either way I love your guys channel! Watching your videos has increased my knowledge of the legendarium and as a result has enriched my viewings of the movies!
rly love yr videos wish they had subtitles !!!!
Thank you for the video! I also love the artwork which compliments your explanations to the stories.
The Sword that shames Excalibur
Indeed this blade makes Excalibur look like a Big Mac without the meat or buns.
@@TheVictorLoyiso It makes Excalibur look like a BLT without Bacon, Lettuce or Tomato.
Please. Excalibur is the inspiration.
@@occamsox5331 please. Narsil and later Anduril was the sword of kings for many generations even after it was broken and reforged for Aragorn. Excalibur was used once before being tossed back to the Lady of the Lake after Arthur died and was never seen or used again.
I am regretful to admit that this is true.
Thank you for making this vid. Tolkien's universe is so history rich with Arda's lore that, I think, we get new stories by looking at it from different perspectives...inc. the weapons, gems and trees.
Can't wait for your video on Aragorn and Arwen
Awesome Sword and the one sword that Sauron fears the most.
The fact that a lesser divine being feared that sword tells you everything you need to know
Hi, I just want to thank you for your amazing work. The lord of the rings made me who I am today and your videos are so good! I always look forward for your new content. Dissapearing into the lore of Middle-earth even just for few minutes helps me to overcome these dark days, which are the worst times I have ever been through (even without covid). I dont know if you will read this, but it doesnt matter, I just want to write it down and hopefuly it will give back a bit of happines you give to all of us through your great, great videos. Dont you ever stop creating, you are the best.
Many thanks from Prague!
A most fascinating look into the history of arguably the most important weapon of the War of the Ring, I wonder if the Flame of the West was ever called to combat such as was seen on Pelennor Fields on the fourteenth of March, 3019 or at the the Black Gate a mere six days later. Perhaps it will yet have a roll to play upon Dagor Dagorath, but I leave that in the hands of Ilúvatar.
The art from 3:11 to 4:03 is tiptop stuff. New wallpapers for my PC I think :)
Thank you for making this one i love this sword!
Great video Yostan!!
This sword is in my top three! Sting, Anduril, and Orchrist(I hope I spelled that right). Thank you Mr. West 👍🏼. Also I wish you good fortune on finding a new apartment. I saw your community post.
Thanks M.G., I really appreciate it, my friend! I'm actually house hunting so I can leave my apartment, so that's even more stress for me lol. But thank you again, I really appreciate it!
@@MenoftheWest You’re welcome! One bit of advice. Try to avoid houses that have carpet in every room in the house. I’ve heard it’s not very healthy. Plus if you wanted to remove(replace) the carpet, it’s very expensive.
It's Orcrist - no 'h' (since you made the point about spelling; it's 'orc' and 'rist', Sindarin for cleaver or sword).
Ha, I have Orcrist and Anduril reproductions in my office. My Orcrist is a prop but Anduril is a real sharpened Darksword Armory version. It is epic to hold.
Great video! Didn't know sword history could be soo interesting!
Thanks for using the Brothers Hildebrandt artwork in the video. Long before Peter Jackson, they made the Tolkien tale come to life through their art.
Great observation! Whenever I think of any LOTR artwork, I immediately envision a Hildebrandt piece...
Epic tattoo Yoystan! I love it!
I agree: the tattoo is epic! I love it, Yoystan! Thank you for showing it.
No greater sword than this with its glorious heritage and destiny. The grand account of how it broke and the how the elves reforged it for greater purposes yet to come. You have a grand destiny, too, Yoystan! (And thank you for these awesome videos!)
Outstanding work, as always.
I often think about how cool it would be to walk through a museum with all this Middle Earth artifacts 😁♥️

I wonder what the eight people who disliked this video were watching... this is probably the best video on UA-cam about a sword!
@9:17 Hence the song "Sauron of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom."
So this is going to be a tad odd, but- that being said if you read this, there is a Minecraft server out there called Ardacraft. It’s a none profit project aiming to rebuild middle earth at 1/3rd scale I believe? It’s book and lore accurate, not based on the movies. Currently they have gotten as far as Rohan- but I think it would be a great server to check out for visual content for your videos. If you want to get in contact with the owner of the project I do know him. I am currently not apart of this project, I used to be. But I think you’d very much enjoy it. It’s one of the largest Minecraft projects ever undertaken. It is pure respect to Tolkien and his dream for middle earth.
Thank you making this VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!
My headcanon is since Curufins knife was also made by Telcar, Narsil was actually Curufins sword, taken from him by Beren, when he took Angrist. Beren taking it on his quest and it being kept in Doriath after Berens death. Also nicely links Beren and Luthien to Aragorn and Arwen.
I think it needs to be discussed that Beren, during his time as a bandit, wounded Sauron himself in the hand, as is told in the Silmarillion. I would think it quite likely that the blade used was Narsil; objects in Tolkien's writings have animus towards the enemies against whom they were forged (the barrow-blades being another example) and Sauron would have had all the more reason to fear the blade which had twice injured his hands.
I would love some more videos about the metaphysical/Jungian representation of items and analysis of characters in lord of the rings.
To me Narsil in Aragorns journey represents reclaiming ones generational trauma in order to embody the archetype of the king, but I would like to hear others interpretations more familiar with Tolkien's work.
Also why the sun and the moon representation for example? Often in cultures these represent union of masculine and feminine in creating wholeness.
Just some ideas. Cheers
A very extremely great video as always Men of the West.
Can you do a Video about „what if Gandalf realized Bilbo had the One Ring before it was passed to Frodo“?
Great video, as always! Yesterday I rewatched The Fellowship of the Ring and a question came to my mind: during the escape from Moria Gandalf tells Aragorn that "swords are no more use here", but considering the properties and the history of Andúril, do you think that Aragorn would have been able to injure Durin's Bane?
Hello would you ever consider doing video about eastern/southern lands? cheers!
I was wondering if you could make a video about what’s the meaning of the hand sign Legolas and Thranduil make at the end of the Hobbit battle of the five armies
One of the things in the books that I thought was pretty ridiculous was when Aragorn was carrying the sword while it was still the 'Shards of Narsil'. It always seemed rather stupid to me that a ranger would carry a broken sword into the wild where he may and in fact did have to face combat. That's one thing that the movies did better, in my opinion. They gave Aragorn, or Strider as he was known at that time, a different, unbroken, and useful sword to carry until the Shards of Narsil were reforged into Anduril...and then they went and changed how, when, and where it was given back to him. There was no need for that change.
On a side note, the method of reforging the sword that was shown in the movie would not work...at all...not even a little. If they reforged the sword like that it would break the very first time he used it! To reforge a broken sword using the same steel as the original it would first have to be broken into much smaller pieces. The small pieces would be stacked and forge-welded into a solid billet which could then be drawn out into a blade in much the same way that pattern-welded 'Damascus' steel blades are still made today.
BTW, does it seem strange to anyone else that technology in Middle Earth didn't advance at all in thousands of years? I mean Frodo, Bilbo, Thorin, & Gandalf are all using swords that are well over 5,000 years old, and they're not only still useful, but they're as good or better than anything else that could be made in Middle Earth at the end of the Third Age!
My theory is that Narsil was a specially forged sword for Maedhros after his rescue from Angband. We know that the knife Angrist was forged by the same person and Maedhros's brother Curufin carried it until Beren took it from him so perhaps the two weapons were crafted together after being commissioned by the Fëanorians who had ties with the Dwarves. Maedhros now had only one hand so he needed a lighter weapon to fight with but still big enough to fit his extreme hight. We know that Anduril was a big sword even for a tall man like Aragorn but light enough for him to carry with two hands so I guess it makes sense. So regarding the means by which the sword passed on to the line of Elendil I believe it all goes back to the time when Maedhros and Maglor took in Elrond and Elros after capturing them during the third kinslaying. The two of them I have to believe were trained by Maedhros in combat and perhaps Elros showed great promise in that regard so after the War of Wrath Maedhros gifted him the sword to carry in battle and keep safe. After that Elros passed it down to his descendants in Numenor and eventually to Aragorn who we know is related to him:)
P.S. We know that Maedhros suffered at the hands of Sauron in Angband so it would be a fitting late revenge for his sword to be the one to cut Sauron's finger
P.S.2 The name fits perfectly aswell. Narsil "Red and White Flame". What if red symbolised Fëanor's spirit of fire who Maedhros inherited and white the light of the Silmarils (I don't know just dropping random ideas)
Narsil shall forever be one of the most powerful of all swords in history

Guthwine, Anduril and Glamdring combining forces with (I wish) Durin's axe was an awesome time for the free peoples of Middle-Earth; I love seeing that happen whenever I watch the movies.
An elegant weapon,
from a more civilized time.
Great Video
I would like to think that Andruil was actually Meadhros Feanorian Sword which he gave to Elros as a gift when Elrond and Elros was given to Gil Galad. Telchar (Dwarven Smith) made the sword for Meadhros because I think Meadhros and his brothers helped kept Morgorth and his army at bay from the Dwarven Kingdoms.
Actually Elros's blade comes from thingol himself which was passed down by his parents. The name in english or common is kings wrath? Im not sure though i am sure it was thingols blade which Elros half-elven wields.
Narsil has suffered a catastrophic failure please surrender you blade and leave the forge. It will not keel but it will cut. Before you Elvin smiths is the broken blade of Narsil you must forge it back into a new blade the parameters are the following It must be between 4 and 5 feet in length a full tang and pommel with elvish script on its blade and finally it should glow blue when orcs are near. Your 3 ages begin now. p.s. nice ink
I'm waiting for Forged in Fire to do that very episode. They've already done Game of Thrones. Here's fingers crossed.
Another great video. Ever consider doing an audio book of THE LOTR series? Haha
Truth queried as jest. I know many hours of research go into each video; nonetheless, even with all the amazing facts and quotes, wonderful artwork and excellent editing, it’s your observational comments at the end of each tale which show your greatest talent. That, and again, your captivating diction, which I liken to Sir Peter Ustinov, making listening to each and every video a pure delight. Would these well-written and well-crafted videos be as brilliant if read by a mere mortal? Methinks not.
My memory is fuzzy... Did Aragorn do amything in/for the lands of Armor after the war of the ring? If he does, that would be an awesome video I would love to see! Good luck house hunting!

Tom Bombadil is one of your patrons, that's awesome. Lol where's Goldberry?
This man should talk to the head mod of divide and conquer, and partner up for some lore video
I have theory about how it was that such a well-bred heirloom weapon like Narsil broke in the fateful final combat of Last Alliance. The explanation is actually simple in all likelihood. Once Gil-galad and Elendil managed to pierce Sauron however many times they managed to in order to mortally wound his physical form, the two legendary weapons - Aiglos and Narsil were doomed. It seemed to be one of the features of the binding magic Sauron imbued in his rings of power; dissolution of weapons that strike Ring- wearers; perhaps a type of ruin-spell such as durin’s bane used or the one that was on the gate-ram Grond. There are several examples of such in instances involving the Nazgul when weapons were wielded at them.
Hello from Chicago suburbs
Wen they released the Lord of the Rings on blu-ray there was a limited edition package that included Anduril as a letter opener. Still have mine in the box.

Ok I’m not the best of UA-cam and don’t know how to msg you. Much thanks if you read this and find it appropriate to be posted on here.hail and well met
I have a topic for a new video. At the end of the wars with Angmar why did Gondor leave their sister kingdom and kinsmen to ruin and division . Why didn’t The house of Anárion (Gondor) and their armies stay in Eriador for a period instead to reunite and rebuild Arnor to ensure stability in the north and a ally in the wars to come or at least grant their kinsmen of the House of Elendil sanctuary in Gondor rather than leaving them in exile as impoverished rangers in the wild.
Aragorn walking around without a shealth for his sword? That is dangerous!
Kinda like the movies twist on the matter of the sword! Brought a dramatic effect ! I still remember my reactionWhen he was given in the movie
The one thing that bothers me about the movie version is the fact that Aragorn is given “Anduril” by Elrond before leaving for the Paths of the Dead and not like it was written in the book for the fact that he had the sword just before the Fellowship left for Mordor.
What i Aragons small blade does it have a name?
Man, I wish I could get my hands on an actual battle-ready and sharpened/tempered Glamdring and Anduril... But in South Africa, there are very few talented smiths, and the price of these swords would be astonishing...
Where can I get a replica?
I might recommend United Cutlery for the highest quality! The prices are steep too, but their swords are excellent!
@@MenoftheWestThank you. I shall look into it.
I thought Narsil was forged by the dwarf Telcar, why does the passage say it was made by elvish smiths?
In all of the Hildebrandt illustrations Aragorn looks like he should be in Foghat or something...that stache!!!
In the movie they basically ignor Anduril, though once reforged it is a magic sword, blue flames rippled up the blade, and it could go through orcs like butter. But the movie gives no input on this sword and it’s important role in Aragorn being a master swordsman.
I have heard a couple of theories about how the sword came to Numenor. The first is that Telchar (or the Lord of Nogrod) gave the sword to the Feanorians (specifically Maedhros or Maglor as payment for rescuing him when he was cornered by orcs) and they passed the sword on to Elros when he was young, as a gift and for penance. The other theory I have heard is the sword passed from the Telchar and the dwarves of Nogrod to Finrod, when the dwarves of the Ered Luin helped him carve Nargothrond, and because of their great friendship with him the sword was passed on as a gift. It's possible then that the sword passed from Finrod to Beren when Beren came to Nargothrond seeking help, and as Beren had no weapons Finrod would have armed him and thus the sword passed to Beren and then on to men.
Im going to be getting anduril as part of a tattoo design soon.
The one dislike is Sauron, who is bitter that you made a video about the demise of his finger.
Looks like a few of the ringwraiths have chipped in too. Not the mouth of Sauron though. He would have left a salty comment.

Make a what if video about isuldur destroying the ring and what becomes of middle earth there after. A new war of men, elves and dwarves???
Excellent! Such a what-if need not be a thin book indeed...
I like thinking the broken shape of Narsil also sorta inspired the idea of Acharn from SoW, but the roles are reversed, being a sons sword broken and taken by the father
I like to imagine strider drawing the broken sword and out dueling thieves and orks with it alone.
Love the swords of Arda I always wanted húr sword
Was anduril the sword he wielded in the fellowship when the hobbits first meet him??
Cus in the book it describes aragorns sword as “broken one foot below the hilt”
So was he openly using anduril as his sword even tho it was broken? Cus if so, that’s badass
So Trolls are Melkor/Morgoth’s perversion of the Ents created by Eru? The Dragons were Morgoth’s perversion of the great eagles, Orcs obviously are supposed to represent Elves that Morgoth perverted with evil thoughts, and without the ability to ever feel any true good feeling, like happiness, and love for friends and family. So what were the fell beasts then? Just like regular eagles, instead of the Great Eagles of Manwe? Can someone shed some light on this for me?
