If were to be able to get my choice of the greatest swords of Tolkien's Legendarium it would be Ringil. One of the things that I like the most about Ringil is that it was Melkor who actually helped Fingolfin forge it while still in Valinor, and it was the sword that Fingolfin would later use to permanently cripple him in their legendary 1-on-1 duel! Of course, Melkor had intended Fingolfin to use Ringil on Feanor, but Fingolfin was too smart & level-headed to do something that stupid. You know that all throughout their duel and with every painful step he took for the rest of his life Melkor/Morgoth was cursing the day the helped Fingolfin forge that great sword! Also, Fingolfin was the coolest elf in the Legendarium! I am also a huge fan of Glamdring, but between the two Ringil just edges out Glamdring for it's fantastic history.
Orchrist is hands down my go to favorite sword. It has a decent length, good thickness, and just looks awesome. Plus just liking the dwarves best that plays a part too lol 😂
Fun Fact - the actor who played Aaragorn used that sword prop in another movie he made where he was decked out in mid-evil attire for a singular scene.
Do you have any history of the sword of King Thranduil? In The Hobbit movies they made it look quite unique; I think it is one of the coolest looking blades of Middle Earth.
i like the theorie that orcrist belonged to ecthelion and sting once belonged to glorfindel because it was said that he fought with a sword and a dagger
Whilst I'm not overly into weapons & armor in movies & games, I do have a passing interest. Much personality can be found in them. They are often cool looking &, of course, their Legend depends mostly on the wielder, but something must be said for the craftsmanship, any imbued effects or magic and there's definitely a kind of bond created between the objects & their users. Some strange transference of energy takes place, it feels like. I have noticed this same feeling in regards to places, nature (remember my tree diatribe b4? 😄) & even vehicles. Those larger objects are more easily parted out of necessity. But, more easily carried objects, well & oft used, become that much more special because, being portable, they can stay with you longer & in an abundance of places other objects can't go. More easily handed down over time, as well, gaining momentum and possibly exaggerated more in tales as they go. Though, other times, as with well known deeds of these blades you spoke of, the Legends remain true without need for aggrandization. I find a certain awe even in every day Historic objects that might well be on display in museums, knowing some far off person from ages past made and/or used these just in living their lives, so far removed from me & my time & environment. As for my preferred weapon, I'd probably have to go with Sting, simply because I'm not very fighty & probably closest to being a Hobbit. Seems about my size & speed & only to be used in a pinch, but with great effect. I wouldn't be opposed to greater depth vids on these or other weapons, but I'm unsure what more detail there would be. You seem to have already struck a great balance here. But, if you think there's enough there to delve further, have at it, but don't wake the Balrog. 😂
Wow! As I may have written a while back, these were the books I read through 30+ times, but I don't recall any foreshadowing, in writing, that w/o Merry 1st there couldn't have been Eowynn 2nd. Brilliant insight. If one thought long enough about the how-&-why of that moment since the movie(s) didn't provide backdrop either, one could be kept up at night. I don't sleep well anyway; avg. start time to the day is 0300 PT.
One does not simply choose one sword from the lord of the rings tales of middle earth. For you would need and have use for many in different battles. For a long sword ,Narsil / Andúril or Glamdring froan arming sword Herugrim, a dagger Sting or perhaps a Morgal blade maybe more than one if the disintegrate after using mortal hands. As a manchette Orcrist will do nicely. So in other words which sword would you choose ?Yes.
Aye... swords are great and all, but what use would they be against a dwarf who doesn't quite stand a bit taller, like Eomer mentioned? You'll be wanted a good stout AXE! But, damn them swords of Middle Earth are so good and have a very good bit of lore attached to the named ones.
True words you speak of the use of axes against dwarves and the does come with the added use of cutting wood but with the unwanted attention of the trees and Treebeard if he should be close by.@@cocodojo
I always wondered why Tolkien never named Aragorn's ranger sword, the sword he used before he was given the re-forged Anduril. He used it as much if not more than Anduril so you'd think it would've been named.
7:05 Sting going by the movie appearance is definitely a sword, it looks similar to a Greek xiphos which in its time was about the size swords generally were. We tend to think swords have blades of around 30 inches or more but this wasn’t true through much of history
By the time of this comment being posted, I just bought a Bilbo's sword, Sting replica 2 days ago. However I would like to own Andúril, Aragorn's sword.
The moment where Thorin unsheathes Orcrist for the first time: pay attention to his hand holding the scabbard... he'd have sliced pretty deeply in to his fingers if that wasn't a prop sword.
I was wondering if there's story about the dagger Aragon was carrying in the first film. I loved the elven swords seen in the Last War of the Alliance. Until the Hobbit came.out and Orcrist caught my eye
But to be able to lift and then wield it, you must spend years on The Wheel of Pain and build up that most formidable physique that rivals the Gods themselves!
If you're just looking for replicas to hang on a wall, United Cutlery has the official LOTR license and make some beautiful pieces for decorative purposes. Glamdring, Anduril, Orcrist, Sting, even the longsword wielded by Aragorn through the first two LOTR films. If you're looking for actual combat ready pieces, you'll have to do a bit more research, there are some companies that produce stuff like that but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews.
United Cutlery is the place to get LOTR swords, just be aware they're decorative pieces and are not meant to chop stuff or otherwise be used as a sword
He promised to free them if they helped him save Gondor. Leaving Gondor and entering Mordor wasn’t part of the promise, plus only him, Gimli, Legolas, and the Grey Company were the only ones would could stand to be around them.
Mention Thranduils swords and his dagger, also the legendary bows of Legolas, Leogolas also had knives and a sword. Bard killed Smaug with a special arrow fired from a bow 👍
Shouldn’t narsil or anduril be a great sword for Aragorn.Elendil was said to be eight feet tall so the sword would be appropriate for his height but much larger for Aragorn?what y’all think
Depends on how you look at it, it could be a short sword, or a long dagger, but all that matters is how you use it. (Danny from the Horror Geek channel) : Hell Yeah! Mike Bracken : No, not like that pervs! 😅
@@cocodojo size wise it would be equivalent in real life to what’s called a xiphos which is a Greek sword. By modern standards it would be considered a short sword but in the time the xiphos was used that was about how long swords were
Well it shpuldnt be because I have a licensed replica of sting and it's alot smaller than you think, it only looks big because a hobbit uses it, it's more of a big knife than a sword.
That's essentially why handguns are called sidearms. Swords, other smaller blades, and other miscellaneous weapons that were used for personal protection where called sidearms because they were always on a person's side. As firearms grew in prominence handguns gradually became the protection arms that were always kept at one's side, so they became sidearms
other than glowing, did any of the swords really have "power" or were they honestly just famous. sams sword not being able to cut the webs could fall to several things, improper edge alignment which could be caused by poor design. or improper care and not keeping them sharp, over use from chopping potatoes. obviously magic is real within the middle earth, so they could of embued them with special properties. but honestly none of the swords really were described as such other than "glows in presence of orcs"
Quite a few of them were mentioned to have some kind of affinity or attribute attached to them, but the most notable one was Sting's effectiveness against spiders. Sadly most of that information is in the appendices of the books or briefly mentioned elsewhere. The Simarillion does have way more lore for Middle Earth overall, but it also has a lot of stuff condensed into it. Lots of stuff starts happening once the elves came into the story!
Gurthang was so powerful anything struck by its black blade (even the father of dragons Glaurung) is slain. However, the cost of wielding its terrible power has a equally terrible drawback. . Friends, family, and even the wielder himself were not safe from its unending thirst for death and destruction.
I hope you all had a great Christmas! 🎉 Did anyone get any great Tolkien gifts? 😁
I got the revised edition of Tolkien’s letters!!
One better. I got a dragonball.
I got a po-ta-toes shirt, and a lotr ornament
Viewed The LotR Trilogy on Christmas Day...alas, not the Extended Edition, but still...! :D
Sting!
I would be interested in Legolas's twin white daggers, not much is said about them. Great video! Thank you!

Awesome video. I love the first age ❤
Great Content!! thanks!!
Ringil for me, it might only be known for one feat but it was a very impressive one since it was used to injure morgoth himself
Very nice vid. Right to the point and just edgy enough.
Glamdring...nuff said. 16:59

Because he always has the broken sword with him, since he was 20
The ranger sword was only in the movies
Tolkien didn't name it because it does not exist in the books
The Rangers used short swords that went by the name Eket. Kind of symbol of their kind.
I feel like any sword that creates life long injuries to the most powerful Valor has got to be the most powerful.
👍👍
Any weapons video is greatly appreciated!
The sword Andúril is my favourite.
Sting was technically a sword for Hobbits or Halflings. But since we are regular humans, it is a dagger for us. But still has that iconic status.
Glamdring is definitely my favorite sword
Honestly i like over all of them, Urfael wielded by Talion in the Shadow of games

Witch kings and Thranduils sword are cool af imo

SWORDS!
What about the Barrow blades given to the Hobbits by Tom Bombadil?
How about a video of what would have happened if Bilbo killed golum in the hobbit??
Forgot about my mighty meat saber
If Orcrist belonged to Ecthelion (not conclusive evidence?) then it’s above Glamdring given that Gothmog was the lord of balrogs
Sting would suit me right down to the ground.

Musta the Rohirim!!!!!!

I used to be the Witch King, until I took a dagger in the knee.

no Aeglos? (not a sword)
