  • I love using my scroll saw but I hate the dust it creates. I have had this idea for a dust collection system for a while but never took the time to order the pieces. I regret waiting so long because it was so easy and quick to assemble. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Great job on the dust collector. I've been battling the fine dust for years, and have tried a number of solutions with little success. This appears to be the answer to my problems. Thanks much for showing us scroller's an easy and affordable solution to the dust.

    Great idea - I just made mine today. I modified it a bit and didn't use as many adapters to downsize things, and had a shop vac adapter already that I used to join everything. I also learned a trick from another UA-cam video on how to combine the loc-line pieces without the special tool (using the freezer and hot water for the different pieces so they snapped right in super easily and without the need to waste money on yet another tool for one simple project). Thanks for the idea :)

    Great video TightWadRepairs and great idea! I need to come up with a system for my Dewalt compound miter saw to reduce sawdust in my shop/party house.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому

      They make larger diameter Loc-Line you could try to arrange closer to the blade. I hook up my shopvac up via the port on the back of my miter saw but it doesn't do a great job with dust/chip collection. I've seen other people make a miter station(table) their saw sits on. They enclose the area behind the saw port making a large cavity. Then they use strips of flexible rubber or plastic to drape over the back of the saw like the door to a meat locker. This prevents the dust from coming back out of the cavity and gives the collector time to suck it all in.

    Very good video. I built something very similar for my Dewalt a couple of months ago. I found a flexible rubber coupling in the plumbing section that allowed me to hook my vac up directly without the molding of the pvc. I'm now building one for my Hegner saw. I have mine hooked up to a Fein vacuum. Thanks.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому +1

      Ray Scrafield That’s great! Is your Fein fairly quiet? The actually sell a flexible adapter at HD that goes from the standard shop vac hose down to multiple smaller sizes. I have one for my KregJig jig. I may redesign to use one of those instead on my next project.

    • @rayscrafield2106
      @rayscrafield2106 6 років тому +1

      The Fein is considerably quieter than a normal shop vac. Still makes noise but less. If I had my druthers, it would be outside in an enclosure but I'm also using it as my primary shop vac also. I have a Dust Deputy incorporated too. It all works great.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому +1

      Ray Scrafield I love my dust deputy! It’s a part of this set up for sure. I’m thinking about getting a longer hose and making a cart for my shop vac and dust deputy I can roll into the next room while I scroll.

    • @rayscrafield2106
      @rayscrafield2106 6 років тому

      Luckily, the Fein came with 16 feet of hose so I can go pretty much wherever I need to go with it. I did have to do some altering of some old vacuum accessories that I had in order to be able to use it for floor cleaning and other things around the shop. I did the heat gun trick on them so they would fit the Fein hose end. Of course the Germans had to make the hose non-compatible with the stuff we have here in the states.

    Your system looks good and it seems to do the trick. My problem is that if I scroll for three to four hours at a sitting the shop vac would drive me crazy. I like to have sixties on six blaring away. A vacuum in another room sounds like an answer.

    Fantastic idea. I am going to build one too. So, thank you for the idea.
    There are couple of things that I would like to suggest:
    Can you also addi a small brush next to the blade from underneath. It could actually clean your blade from the dust that might get stuck to it.
    My Excalibur saw had a small clear plastic cover under the cutting surface too. The piece was making a small chamber that would collect all of the saw from the bottom and would forward to the vac.
    Finally, since you already have the top-flexible hose right next the wood from the top, wouldn't make it much easier if you can install a bright, low-voltage, LED that would lid your work space as well?
    Just suggestions. Rhank you for sharing your idea with us.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the great suggestions. What type of brush are you referring to for the lower blade holder area? I do like the LED light idea so it’s automatically aimed at the cutting area. I bought a flex light I can clip to the upper arm that if currently use.

    This is awesome! I literally have all the stuff to make mine, using the loc-line & PVC & now I find your video. LOL You did give me a couple ideas to help simplify mine though.. I was over thinking it & I'll be taking some fittings back. I'm actually going to use a few different fittings and use the heat gun to make a few mild curves in the PVC rather than use some of the extra fittings. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for sharing. I am wondering how much it will cost to run the shop vac for hours at a time though. Have you used it enough to notice a difference in your electric bill?

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  5 років тому

      Joel101R I’m glad you found the video. I ended up keeping the zip ties instead of using permanent brackets. I think the benefit of the dust collection greatly outweighs the small increase in power consumption. Our power bill is all over the place due to Georgia’s unpredictable weather so it’s hard to tell. I also don’t typically scroll for hours on end.

    I think this is a great solution. I wondered if you tried it with an actual dust collector instead of the shop vac. Also, would a wider nozzle on the bottom be of any value? Thanks!

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  3 роки тому +1

      It wouldn’t work as well with a dust collector because of the way it moves air. A shopvac can be reduced down to this size and still perform effectively but a dust collector can not. I considered a wider nozzle initially but this one works very well.

    Just finished assembly and first run. It works very, very well and I will use it all the time. One issue....in addition to the shop vac noise I have a high pitched whistle. Does anyone else have this issue and what can be done about it? Standard Ridgid shop vac 5 hp. Help!!!!!

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Try adding a tiny piece of tape over a section of the opening on the nozzle. It should disrupt it just enough to stop the whistle. I had the same issue. Other people have suggested covering the tips with tulle so the dust gets through but small pieces don’t get sucked up on accident.

    Looks awesome,,,, but I have a couple questions. I sometimes saw four to five hours on a project and I'm thinking I'm gonna have to replace the shop vac every few weeks and when scrolling I'll have to wear hearing protection where I don't now. Do you find the vacs going bad often?

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  3 роки тому

      Not at all. I haven’t had any issues with the shop vac from running it too long or overheating. I did burn one out because I went too long without changing the filter though. That was my fault. I wear hearing protection so I can listen to music or podcasts while scrolling anyway so that part didn’t change for me.
