Why am I Switching to a Canister Filter?!

- I have always enjoyed using sump filter. However, I have decided to change out the filtration in my 75 gallon aquarium in favor of a canister filter.

Lol, your expression when talking about the smell of Turbo Start! 😂
Thanks for sharing! I really enjoy the maintenance and "changing things" videos. I appreciate seeing experienced fish keepers with "messy tanks" in the middle of changing things, etc. I hope to see an update on how things progress.
I have a fx 4 and never thought of putting a course sponge inside the strainerThanks for the tip
I always wondered what a sump filter was, I use the old fashioned green canisters with the biochem pouches 😊.
Ive got something like a fancy canister filter. 4inch PVC pipe with a screw on cap for cleaning. Inside I fill it with polyester pillow stuffing and some sponges. Powering it is a malwart power head stuck on the top of a sponge filter. Infinitely expandable. Need more filter just build another PVC canister filled with pillow stuffing and sponges. I fancied the setup with a couple unions and ball valves. 1 ball valve to shut off the flow to the tank and another ball valve going to the drainage line that I hook a hose up to and run to the sink for water changes.
Cool “how to”. Thanks Zenzo!!!
Great video. I like cannister filters for my big tanks, I run 4 Oase Biomasters and love them. I dont know why the cleaning issue is always mentioned, I can service one in less than 10 min. Not much longer than my HOB's.
It's because the biomasters have a prefilter.
Great video have a quick question during a power outage for how long can I canister filter be off without killing all the beneficial bacteria inside canister ??
Oh how do you use the easy planters ????
Zenzo I thought you had to move the tank!?
Cory mentioned you were traveling or recently did. Safe travels! Hopefully it was a fun and amazing trip.
fx2 is super cool.
I wonder if you would have a "much better" experience with a manufactured sump as opposed to a custom/diy job.
The 125 acrylic tank I brought home from my office has overflows drillled on the bottom left. I noticed the maintenance company added a hole for return on the top right to create water flow across the tank. I can’t add a canister because there are no appropriate holes in the top of the tank. Would you recommend I implement a sump or drill the tank to accept a canister? I plan to keep my frontosa in there with other tanganikyans. Thanks!
I was just talking about this, I think canisters is a better option definitely depending the tank size, I believe sumos should only be used for massive sized tanks
Liking those easy planters 💯
Where did you get that battery operated power supply?

Can I use a canister FX6 on a saltwater tank instead of a sump?
Overflow boxes with u-tubes live in my nightmares... :)
Great video, i ditched the sumps and canisters years ago. My large tanks 240s and 310 had sumps but not anymore. They were more work than they are worth.
I feel like that sump you have there is basically a canister with extra steps anyway
Could have used both sump and canister filter , the sump as a mechanical filtration and the canister filter as the filter media as well as act as the return pump to the display tank .
Hey, Zenzo, my local fish store has a sump system with carp living in the sump at the bottom. Sometimes I see dead carp in there that they haven't taken out. Just wondering, can that impact the health of every fish in the store? I got some Tetras from that store once and they all died.
It potentially can have a negative impact by creating higher levels of ammonia and nitrate.
I think you should look at the rule of 100 square feet of filter media surface area per pound of fish.
Canister filters 4 life wooo.
If the benefitial bacteria in the bottle is started by oxygen, does that mean after you open it that the shelf life is shortened?
Mostly activated by the o2 in the water. There will be some slow degradation over time.
Great video. Good tip, set the fx2 in a tote under your tank stand. This prevents water on your floor if the cannister develops a small leak. From the ball valve or something.
Sumps rule!! FX makes a good product though.
Basically use sumps for salt water or refill Karims use all the other stuff you said, for freshwater aquariums problem solved
Why switch, run em both !
Sumps are superior plain and simple. Its a completely modular system that you can customize to your tanks needs and if a part fails you can easily swap it out and not the whole system like with all in one filters. Plus as long as you have a refugium like area in your sump you will always have a timeout area safe for fish causing issues in the display.
Of course he got a free canister from fluval he going to say anything he wants
I have both now. Sumps are great but they get noisy if not tuned properly. Canister is much easier, especially if you forget to clean it for months at a time, lol
Great video as always! I would like to add a cautionary tale though. For the aquarists out in the country side be careful with canister filters if you have trouble with ants. It is an absolute ant magnet. Make sure you do routine cleanings do not let it sit for a month or or two.
How are they magnets for ants? They're completely airtight by design
i had a lot of ants recently in the room where my canister is, I haven't cleaned it for months, never seen ants near it. I'm wondering why ants were attracted to your canister filter.
I am wondering if they were using that pump to go up the lines to get water from your aquarium?
The filter it self is air tight but the most models with the top mount motors like the 07 line have voids nooks and such that the ants were climbing in and nesting. My guess is the warmth of the motor attracted them. They were no where else not on the aquarium in it or on the hosing just inside the motor case
@@jarednorris5254 What brand canister is it?. I use Eheim classic without a prob rven thow it has a power head at top.
150 and up. Use a sump. Anything smaller. Canister 👋
Who takes care of your fish when you go on vacation?
Nobody. I have made a few videos about it in the past, and will be releasing another one very soon to recap what happened after the most recent trip.
First
After almost 40 years in the fish business, retail wholesale, and home hobby, I built my first Mattenfilter about 8 years ago- and never looked back. I will never, ever have another filter. Done correctly, the ONLY maintenance is 'vaccumming' it lightly with the suction every 6 weeks at partial water change time.
No material changes, crystal clear water, no fish stress, low power use. if you lose power the bacteria keeps working and no issues with any flooding, etc.
About $40 total for a 65 gallon tank. Here is my 65- mattenfilter is in the back right corner- I attached plants to it with plastic bobby pins that grew into it after it was established- adding to the filtration power. It's also basically invisible. i.imgur.com/hiOygFo.jpg
I'd only ever use a sump for a saltwater tank. In my opinion Freshwater tanks don't need them.
