  • What are my thoughts on canister filters? Fluval was generous and sent me their new FX2 to try out, so let's talk about canister filters in aquariums.

    Zenzo...
    I just had a "big project" so I totally feel your procrastination.
    1. I had two 29G on one wall that both had to be broken down and moved.
    2. I had a 10G QT on a dresser, the dresser had to be moved
    3. I had a 75G in the hallway that was dry and needed to go where the 29s were. Replacing them essentially.
    A. Moved the dresser, moved the first 29G into place where the dresser was.
    B. Moved the second 29G out of the way so I could move in the 75G
    C. Repaired electrical, moved the 75G into place, had to fix all the filtration that was sitting unused. Pumps needed some TLC.
    D. Moved the stuff in the 29G into the newly setup 75G. Moved the shrimp tank into place where the dresser was. (Removed one 29, added another 29 in its place that was less damaged)
    E. Take a deep breath and then tried to clean up all the mess. :)
    .......
    The point being, just do it man. Knock it out and enjoy the process and get it moved! You'll be very happy it's done and just push yourself to get started. Before you know it, it's finished.

    I've never tried canisters. Mainly because they are so expensive compared to hang-on backs and sponge filters. Nice tip on the plant for the Cichlids at the end. If I ever come across it I'll be sure to try it out in my Mbuna tank.

    Just added a fx2 to my 125 peacock and hap tank. I have 2 fx6 filters on it that I'm using for bio-media and the fx2 is filled with poly fil and purigen. Tank is spotless. I was going to use a seachem tidal 110 for polishing but I wasn't thinking when I set my tank up being only 3 inches away from the wall so I got the fx2 and it was quick to setup.

    We'd love to see a paludarium-type tank. I was dreaming of building one but I''m not sure how to start.

    My FX6 just went out on me. After a cleaning it would just pulse and wouldn't build pressure. Even after taking it apart twice it would continue to pulse.

    What's up Zenzo. I also have one of those 65G Tall tanks. Great footprint in my opinion. I've also had many different setups going on there. Maybe some Veil Tail Angelfish 😎

    I love my FX6. I've had it for years in my 75g. It always has been very reliable. Wait. 6 months without cleaning your canister filter? I try to do it once a month 😂

    The new fx2 is a useless item with no place in the market . It cost as much as the fx4 practically but doesn’t filter as well it’s kind of between an 407 and an fx4

    • @mikech60
      @mikech60 Рік тому +1

      I just checked, it is the same internal volume as a 407, but it occupies more ground space than a skinny 407, so don't understand why they come out with something like this.

      @@mikech60 agreed , i mean it has a better media trey arrangement than a 407 but thats not worth the price increase

    You clean your sponge filters??!?! LOL. I can't use Fluval's canister filters. I have arthritis and have trouble closing and opening it. I do use Oase because they have a huge pre-filter built in that is easy to clean.

    • @bonwrentaylor2743

      I use an Oase Biomaster canister filter and find it way better (in terms of easy maintenance) than the Fluvals and Eheims I've used in the past ...

    Sponge filters are ok but not without issues one is as the mature the flow gets slower and slower two they look terrible in your tank and third the pump can be really noisy for me external and plants you never need to worry if they are efficient as the plants will tell you

  • @hardybryan
    @hardybryan Рік тому +1

    Wait, you save the canister filter water, with muck full of bacteria, for the plants, but then reseed the filter with products you pay for?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  Рік тому

      I use filter water to feed my houseplants. The bacteria that I added was free…but yes, you have a good point. I could very easily pour that mucky water back in. 👍🏾

    Thoughts Anoxic and plenum filtration.

    • @onlywei
      @onlywei Рік тому +1

      I have anoxic plenums on most of my tanks. However, I also have to supplement either a canister or a hang on back filter for those tanks because undergravel plenums do not do any mechanical filtration.

    I have a fluval tank n built in filter system. It has open slots on both sides (top and bottom) I cannot remove it! My baby fish and plecos keep getting in through these slits! 🤬What can I do to stop this from happening
