K40 Laser Engrave Ceramic Tiles Permanently with this Trick: The Norton White Tile Method

  • This method of engraving ceramic white tiles uses white spray paint to react with the laser and create a permanent greyscale etching on the tile that is incredibly durable and nearly impossible to scratch off.
    The method was developed by a gentleman by the name of Nicky Norton who is continuing to develop and refine the process in addition to experimenting with new ways to get a high quality image onto various materials.
    **************************
    Settings I used for Engraving
    Laser Engraver: k40
    Speed: 80 mm/s
    Image DPI - 300
    K40 Whisperer DPI - 333
    Scan Gap - .003 in
    Dither managed by K40 Whisperer
    Power - Approx. 5 mA
    Paint Used - 2 Coats of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2x Ultra Cover Blossom White Satin
    **Other paints will work, you will need to test that paints and the thickness of coats to figure out what combination works best for you. It is really easy to burn through the paint and end up scoring into the tile which will prevent you from achieving the dark tones in images. It is a balancing act between laser power, paint, and speed. Experiment, Experiment Experiment

    It's the titanium dioxide in the white paint that becomes black and when heated at the right temperatures and speeds, bonds to the tile. This will work better with non glazed tiles (available on Amazon) than it does on glazed tiles.
    This method seems to work best with diode lasers due to their lower power. I'm guessing because the K40 is the lowest powered CO2 laser is why it worked so good for you. I've been struggling to get good results with my higher powered CO2 laser as it seems to either burn off the paint or to only produce light grays.

    • @GeekBuildersNet
      @GeekBuildersNet  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting, I've never tried it with non glazed tiles. As long as you can lower the Co2 laser enough, you should be able to get it to work. I've also been able to do it with my Glowforge. How high powered is your laser?

    do you suggest any setting for the ortur lm2 20w? i tried with black acrylic paint but didnt get any result on the tile, can you help? thanks

    • @GeekBuildersNet
      @GeekBuildersNet  2 роки тому

      I can't provide any feedback on the Ortur since that type of laser is so different from the Co2 laser that I use. If you search "Norton white tile method" on Facebook, you will find a few communities of people who might be able to help you with your specific laser. As far as the black acrylic paint goes, most people use a lacquer based spray paints for better results. And a quick FYI, using black spray paint will not give you the result demonstrated in the video.

    awesome job. what is the fastest mm/sec on a K40 could this be done? what would the power be? i did the 80mm/sec 5ma got a decent dark gray. how to get black?

    • @GeekBuildersNet
      @GeekBuildersNet  2 роки тому

      It is very difficult to get a good black result. A lot of it has do with the paint. On a side note, make sure that the grey your getting is a result of the laser interacting with the paint and not engraving into the actual ceramic. You'll know you have it right when the dots placed by the laser firing is raised above the surface.

      @@charlesrosenbloom4140 It's a tough balance. You have to experiment with speed and power to get the right combo. In addition, I have had the best luck if I keep the DPI around 150

    Would this work with a 1600mw laser? I have the Ruoclris miniature laser. How strong is your laser? Thank you

    • @GeekBuildersNet
      @GeekBuildersNet  3 роки тому

      I'm using a 40w Co2 laser. Your laser might work, but the only way to find out is to try. Using the right paint, other than your power setting is probably the most important part of the process since it is the laser reacting with some specific elements in the spray paint that allow this effect to take place.

      A diode laser is superior to a CO2 laser in regards to the tile ingraving. Also spray paint with high levels or titanium dioxide work best.

    hw, many watts of power did u use... because i wnt to adjust my 100watts accordingly. and yea does this work with automotive paints?

    • @GeekBuildersNet
      @GeekBuildersNet  2 роки тому +1

      The best thing would be to get a test tile and slowly ramp the power up from zero until you start getting an image visible. The CO2 lasers are so powerful that they will often blast through the paint and engrave straight into the tile. As far as automotive paint, I'm not sure. I do know that the active ingredient that reacts with the laser is Titanium dioxide, so if you find that present in the paint then there is a good chance that it will work.

    It is the titanium dioxide in the white paint the laser heats the titanium dioxide driving off oxygen causing the color change from yellow to brown to a blue black , the pharmaceutical industry adds titanium dioxide to the gelatin used to make gel capsules so they can print information on the capsule such as date at the time packing using UV lasers since the UV laser will go right through the clear packaging.
