Yes I use my amp clamps, secondary ignition probes and even the WPS on the Owon. Your final comment that the benefit of this scope is for quick checks rather than in depth analysis is spot on. I was frustrated with the bootup time of the old Verus, so a "quick check" certainly wasn't. I had looked into the AESwave uScope but was put off by its non standard connector that seems very prone to breakage, so at a similar price point, this range of scopes is really a no brainer either as an entry into scoping or as an additional instrument.
Ah I will look in to the presets. I had this on the x10 probe for most the video with out noticing. Still did the job 😅. I got this out to make a video a few times before hitting record. It does take some getting used to. Thanks for sharing.
I bought an HDS242 but returned it because it had a fair amount of voltage drift while warming up. The drift was about 2V on a scale of 10V/div (mean, min, max readings). The drift was disappearing only after about an hour. The HDS242 required constant calibration when it was cold and when it warmed up.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the OWON HDS272S Oscilloscope. I didn't realize how intimidating all of the buttons are. I've learned quite a bit in a few hours of tinkering with my OWON O-Scope. I'm very satisfied with the investment I made. I'll continue learning more from its use from your channel.
I've had that Owon scope for just over a year and I love it, it's great value for money but the way you adjust some of settings can be a little tricky, once you have gotten used to it it can be a very helpful handheld device you can quickly use at the roadside. I also have the Zeeweii DS02512G which is also a great little scope but the screen is a little too small. I still use my Pico 2204 but it's a pain to set it all up, at least with the Owon you can get a reasonable answer very quickly.
To trigger on the signal at 10:30 you can set manual trigger and then use the trigger hold off function. (No clue if a simple scope like this one has it) Sometimes there is no function called hold off, but then you can tell the scope in the trigger menu to skip some trigger-time (Like hold does) and sometimes there are more options like only triggering at a certain pulse-width, or after a number of triggers etc. The more expensive the scope, the more advanced trigger options you get. Trigger is one of the most important things if you do more complex measurement like searching for that one faulty pulse that appears once in a while only (and you can find that using single shot trigger). But I do not know if automotive probing is very demanding/complex. I never used a scope on a car, I repair electronics on component level (repaired a few ECUs but that was for friends, normally I repair electronic measurement gear and industrial/maritime stuff and I use a 300 MHz R&S scope, you can not compare it with the Owon). I just saw this great video by accident and it is very well done , clear explained so I watched it all. One thing to watch for with most scopes is that if you choose a to low timebase the scope will show a waveform but with a much to low frequency. This will look OK but it is totally wrong. Always go up as much as possible until you have one period on screen. At some point you see the signal changing, if so you had the timebase to long. If you have 1 periode or less you can then lower the time base to see more periods in one screen
Thanks for the video ! If you connect the positive end of the oscilloscope probe to the negative wire of the coil and the negative end to ground, you will get the desired signal waveform. In this case ATTENUATOR is required. In my case the spike is 400 V.
I bought one just because it had so many features, including the function generator at 1Hz. Good to show students the features of frequency. Easily shows a good PWM signal on the oscilloscope mode. I must admit.....I mainly bought it to add to my 24 multimeter collection. Oh, with all those features, it also adds to my 8 oscilloscope collection as well as my 4 function generator collection 😁😁😉😉.........I am getting help. Yes it is a little convoluted to use, but with practice, it would be a good little unit. As you have shown, it is a good little mobile unit with a range of features. Good review mate 👍
@@MechanicMindset I like all the features and reckon the quality is up to a good standard for what it is, however, getting to know all the buttons and processes makes it a bit frustrating. But, like I said, if you spend enough time with it and it was your go-to meter, I think it would be a quality purchase.
Yeah like a kid in a candy store! I'm the same way. Started with the Verus Edge 5 years ago and now I have a Pico 4 channel (the new one), a Vantage, Hantak, a pocket scope, and he list keeps growing. The key is getting the techs to use them! (or buy their own!) Just paid $1500 to have my Verus rebuilt after a tech someone fried it! Gotta love it!
@@ardiagnosticsrestoration8566 You are right AR. I am amazed at how few of the apprentices I teach have any decent diagnostic equipment where they work. Unfortunately their employers think it is quicker to load up the parts canon than do a thorough diag. I'm glad you encourage your employees to get their hands on the equipment. Would in house training sessions inspire them?
I've got the same 272S since a few months now and I am very happy. Its like you said to check quickly if you have a signal or with the multimeeter to check some value. There is also a good solution if you have to mesure main supply 230V, because is insulated, Ground issue! So thank you for the video and all the comments.
Glad it helped, it’s a capable scope but could be godly with settings and not so great for long term. Considered the PicoScope 2204A? Need a laptop but super powerful for the money
@@MechanicMindset I would love a picoscope, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out pricing. On their website, they’re around $3k. The 2204 has a good price - is that all I need? Software is free? It will run on a Mac natively (I have a windows VM, but would prefer native)? I have watched so many videos using picoscope, I have a decent understanding of the software. I really appreciate the response!
@@alanottley There are various kits for the 4425A automotive kit. Think it starts around £1000 for just the scope. 2204A will get you going. Only works with normal Pico software. Download Pico 7 on your Mac to have a play on demo mode 👍
nice presentation, Darren, Thanks for all the content you put together, well appreciated 🙂 although that scope is tiny and somewhat 'fiddly' it can save an awful lot of time setting up the laptop versions, if as all you need is confirmation that there some kind of signals on troublesome jobs, save valuable time i guess, before hitting the ground running with heavy duty gear, once armed with essential knowledge, we can make tracks to the right course of action, problem is, modern car's are far too complex, with ever increasing sophistication, often with little or no tech info/ wiring diagrams, sensor location and values accordingly, so we inevitably waste untold time digging out the critical and often mass of diverse knowledge prior to actually getting right under the bonnet, or in haste start 'guessing' data values? (not a good idea) as a suggestion to the manufacturers of that scope(for marketing purposes) perhaps they need better think tanks, by simply altering the 'spelling' slight addition/subtraction etc, they could harness psychological tactics to make their product more desirable (as others have done throughout long periods of public awareness) say drop the second 'O' so it becomes 'OWN' (own, 1 of these ) 🤔, or delete the 2nd 'O' and add '2 letters' after the 'N' ie; ED, to read 'OWNED' (to imply it's better than others 🙂,( i remember the early day's of 2 way radios etc,Walkie Talkie- which was renamed for major appeal) anyway keep up the great work, as ever. 😇
Great insights there. Agreed, this tool should be the go to unit above normal voltmeter for modern cars. So many times I use a voltmeter but actually need a scope
I work on RV's and motorhomes and I have the HDS272S you have here. When I got it the HDS2102S and HDS2202s were not out yet. I ultimately chose the Owon over the Hantek due to the better multimeter. Like you mentioned in the video I use the HDS272S early on in diagnostics to do more of the simple things before I have to bring my laptop in to a normally pretty small area ( "dog house" in the front of a gas RV, or under a bed in the back of a diesel RV ). Other than that, it does what it says in combining the multiple tools to make my life easier so I don't have to keep running back and forth to my trailer. I carry around a charging brick in the event I forget to charge the oscilloscope or use it for prolonged periods of time on multiple appointments in the same day because it will not last a full day of use. You can definitely get spoiled with the Pico, especially the software, waveform library, etc, and if you only ever used a Pico this might be more difficult to get familiar with than if you used a bench scope in a lab.
@@user-lt1bf4hg5h Ask your Snap On truck guy for the waveform simulation vehicle, and show him a picture of the tool in the video if needed. Last I checked it was about ~$140.
I have a bit of a scope fetish too, including a v.good but fiddly-button Hantek Handheld** The ability to understand and measure electronic waveforms is essential to modern car maintenance. It is the new "feel" As a mechanic of old (me!) you had to understand "tolerance" by feel and repeat experience and if you were clever a micrometer might confirm good/bad. As every ICE is now a chip controlled machine the "tolerances" are now down the rabbit hole of abstract concepts unknown to most mechanics: time chopped up so small and the whole DAC/ADC goings-on, titchy components and the dark arts of coding and mapping! All beyond our human senses. So to survive in this brave new EV world a tech has to have a speed wrench in one hand a 'scope in the other and brain that loves diagnostic rabbit holes! Keep teaching, keep learning. **Hantek Handheld Oscilloscope 2D72 2CH 70MHz + Multimeter + 25M Signal Generator
Owon released two handhelds after the HDS272, that is the HDS2102 and HDS2202, the latter one having a much higher sampling rate. Seems like Hantek needs to up their game with an improved version of a handheld oscilloscope.
Classic ‘good, better, best’ marketing 😆The Hantek tablet looks pretty cool! I’ve not used it yet. I do love this Owon hand held though, so convenient for the quick checks
I own one of these, the scope function is good. Resistance measure is too slow. Standby battery drain is good, but the battery drains too fast when on. Other than that, it is ok for a device around $200.
Thanks for the mention. I would agree this scope takes a bit of getting used to. I am used to using the Pico but for a quick go to tool this is a very capable scope.
You was on 50V DC when you was scoping the injector, because there is a 9V DC battery supplying the waveform generator it won’t generate any more voltage. Obviously if it was a 12V DC supply, on a vehicle it would of been more like 70V DC and you would have been on a 100V DC scale 👍
The new model is 200hz, unimportant in automotive but it also has many more sample points. I don't know enough to decide if it's worth the higher price 🤔 Any tips?
The specs of this one are sufficient. It’s the memory which is the important one for us; so we can zoom in to saved data and see the details. For what it is, I really like it, good for quick checks. I’d get the Pico out for anything in depth
I got job for you, you could get one Fnrsi DSO TC3, a 5 in one device, beside all other features it offers, it also have one channel oscilloscope . And as You tested once DSO 138 cheap DIY oscilloscope in automotive job. It would be nice to see how DSO TC3 doing, it is fairly cheap device and quite useful device to have. For how much it cost it offers a lot. I did tested it in some other occasions how it doing, but it is not seen many times as my channel does not growing and don't doing any good, it would be nice to see it here in automotive job.
Muy bien!! Te consulto Tengo el mismo osciloscopio modelo Owon HDS242 ¿ como configurar la señal de secundario de bobina para ver pico inductivo invertido hacia arriba? Veo en su video que la señal esta hacia abajo
The new Model has 4x sample size, tried it? Seems like it can really make the difference with fast signals and zooming, but lack the expirence to actually know 😂
ONLY SPEAKING FROM MY EXPERIENCE ,,,,, BUT FOR ONE THERE'S TO MUCH BUTTONOLEGE AND ALSO FOR A NEW OR NOVICE USER THIS WILL NOT BE SOMETHING EASY TO USE AND LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT THE SCREEN SIZE . LOVE YOUR CHANNEL THANKS FOR YOUR TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍
Great presentation and valuable into on this scope. The Owon does not have any built-in attenuators and connecting the test lead into the scope will load the circuit and perhaps produce inaccurate or distorted wave forms. It would be interesting to see what results you would get using an external 10:1 attenuator. One does not have to use the Pico attenuator as cheaper ones are available, of course the volts/div will need to be adjusted to perhaps 100 millivolts. I use an antiglare screen protector that has helped using the scope outside and protects the screen from scratches. This scope cannot replace a quality bench scope or a decent USB scope, but is a great scope for quick diagnostic work.
I tried the x10 probe on CAN, it was the pretty much same. Lost a few of the small spikes in the square parts of the waveform but that was all. It’s a nice scope and I’ll continue to use it for training on quick captures; but for sure, won’t replace my Pico 👍
I got this one. 70Mhz is good enough for about 95% of the diag work. The function generator covers most signals to simulate. For the money it is one heck of a handheld scope. My only gripe is the buttons are not convenient. Simple things like changing trigger level for CAN like you show is a pain and other settings like that are not very clear to find and require cycling through many menus to access basics functions that should be right there at the press of a button. Other than that is will get the job done and is fast enough to see alternator or fuel pump ripple.
GREAT Video - Thank You! One question tho, I don't see a link to the little car waveform generator. Do you have a link for that please or if not, do you have an alternate? I really like how you can clip on to various parts of the car and have different waveforms.
I bought the same but slightly newer. If you have trouble as an expert, what chance do I have in figuring out it how to use this correctly!? 😂 Looking now at PC-based oscilloscopes with access to known goods.
It’s ok once you start using it it; I think their challenge is packing all the oscilloscope features in to a small package. I use it regularly now but admittedly; I often hit the wrong button for adjusting the scales. No biggie 👍
I had a little play with UScope. It’s good but only 1 channel and it’s very small. The connector looks fragile too. This is good. New Hantek tablet is also worth a look.
@@MechanicMindset yeah I have heard horror stories about the connector. I have the pico kit but I quite often just want to take a quick measurement and it's a pain getting it all out. I'll take a look at the hantek too then I have had kit from them in the past and was happy with it.
My interest is for the ignition systems of classic cars pre 1990's mainly, I'm particularly in using a portable system for use on the LT & HT for classic ignition systems. Are there any inductive HT connectors which will communicate with an Ipad, for the IPad to then be used as oscilloscope display via an app? Thanks
Why do all the UA-cam content providers choose to use the HDS2772S when that scope was superseded by the HDS2102S over a year ago? The latter is a 100MHZ scope that uses proper specified components rather than relying on overclocking in the 70MHZ unit. It has better performance at almost all levels yet the old model keeps cropping up in vid after vid. That just seems a very odd choice.
It’s not on Amazon here in the UK. I just looked for a decent hand held. It was between this and the Hantek. I chose this for the better screen. To be honest, frequency isn’t a factor for me with automotive diag. Possibly with Flexray and CAN FD and later XL. In fact, I often use low pass filter @20khz on PicoScope because of the amount of noise picked up on low frequency waveforms 👍 so yeah, not bothered about high frequency. Maybe they have piles stacked up to clear 😅
I have the same oscilloscope and let me tell you the oscilloscope side is definitely not user friendly. So i just use it for something small so i dont have to tinker with the options but the multimeter side is excellent 👍 one down side the batteries could be bigger 😉
Cheers, yes takes some getting used to. Imagine the screen consumes much of the battery charge. I wonder if we can add a higher Ah battery. I suspect they shipped it with a cheap battery 😂
Hi there thanks for the excellent videos I have a Pico 2204 but would like one of these as work in bus garage and see the hds242 is alot cheaper and don't need signal Generator so would the 40 mz be up to the jop . Thanks Colin
Hey there, I have an owon hds242s handheld oscilloscope, just wondering if you have used the signal generator. I wonder if you ever thought about doing a short video on roughly how to use them / how to know what to input for a given sensor etc? I really don’t have a clue how but they seem a useful feature.
I’ve not used this one really. The voltage output is too low I think but might work. You could use AC signal to test wheel speed input to ABS on some cars
Very interesting video: thanks! Probably next on my shopping list. Did you try the AUTO function? If so, how useful was it for the likes of a CAN signal, and would it apply the most appropriate gain values to each channel? Thanks again.
Hey buddy, great information. I have an old BMW 320D e46 just getting into diagnostics and watching you videos to gain insight. Just attached a breakout box to the dlc and it flashed up warning ‼️ registering 7.5v on the high side. With the battery removed ohms testing from pin 6/14 I have 220 ohms. In all the videos I have seen so far it says 60 ohms and everything is good 120 ohms and one resistor is blown so does 220 mean both are blown? If there is answers in your online course I will join now. Many thanks
Hi, I can’t remember the E46 layout, but it really depends what the ‘topology’ is. It’s not always possible to get the full CAN network at DLC. Best check at the module that has the problems. We have a full course on CAN and more; it will help give you a better perspective for sure 👍

Hi daren great videos! I love using the Pico6 but one problem I have is that my degree rulers are only up to 360 degrees, how can I get it to 720 degrees?
The fact that you can't see the crank signal when you increase the time base is because the screen resolution is so small. With only 320 pixels in horizontal resolution, and detail is lost and this is what you get.

This is the best demo of this scope for automotive use!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!
Thanks! Still a few more tests we can do 👍
To trigger on the signal at 10:30 you can set manual trigger and then use the trigger hold off function.
My friend and colleague and I liked your signal simulator.Good stuff.

Haha! Yes it is feature rich. How do you rate it as a multimeter compared to some of your top line models?
Would in house training sessions inspire them?
lol I’m right there with you man. I have a problem 😂
I've got the same 272S since a few months now and I am very happy.
Its like you said to check quickly if you have a signal or with the multimeeter to check some value.
There is also a good solution if you have to mesure main supply 230V, because is insulated, Ground issue!

I send greetings, thanks for your video tutorials, they are very good, I learn a lot, I am an automotive entrepreneur, in Chile. regards
Great to hear!
Very good video. As a DIYer, I have been looking at small scopes and found your evaluation to be very informative. Thanks!
Glad it helped, it’s a capable scope but could be godly with settings and not so great for long term. Considered the PicoScope 2204A? Need a laptop but super powerful for the money
Allso in The shop these are great for quick checks.
@@MechanicMindset Thanks! Will do!
nice presentation, Darren, Thanks for all the content you put together, well appreciated 🙂 although that scope is tiny and somewhat 'fiddly' it can save an awful lot of time setting up the laptop versions, if as all you need is confirmation that there some kind of signals on troublesome jobs, save valuable time i guess, before hitting the ground running with heavy duty gear, once armed with essential knowledge, we can make tracks to the right course of action, problem is, modern car's are far too complex, with ever increasing sophistication, often with little or no tech info/ wiring diagrams, sensor location and values accordingly, so we inevitably waste untold time digging out the critical and often mass of diverse knowledge prior to actually getting right under the bonnet, or in haste start 'guessing' data values?
@@MechanicMindset Cheers Darren, keep up the great work,,,as ever, you'll be well rewarded soon 😇🙂
Thanks for sharing! It is definitely a learning curve; more conventional oscilloscope features rather than the easy to use Pico software 👍
As usual good video. What is that snap-on signal generator you had the owon hooked too?
@@user-lt1bf4hg5h Ask your Snap On truck guy for the waveform simulation vehicle, and show him a picture of the tool in the video if needed. Last I checked it was about ~$140.
What is that signal generator called? Thanks great work with your videos👍👍👍
I have a bit of a scope fetish too, including a v.good but fiddly-button Hantek Handheld**
The ability to understand and measure electronic waveforms is essential to modern car maintenance.
For sure, it’s all changing fast. Got to stay up to date! I think the Hantek is very similar to this. *scope fetish 😂… yes 😳
what about 2D82 , is it beter than this owon ??
Owon released two handhelds after the HDS272, that is the HDS2102 and HDS2202, the latter one having a much higher sampling rate. Seems like Hantek needs to up their game with an improved version of a handheld oscilloscope.
Classic ‘good, better, best’ marketing 😆The Hantek tablet looks pretty cool! I’ve not used it yet. I do love this Owon hand held though, so convenient for the quick checks
Hi, just seen video, you cam add a battery inline this will increase the voltage and keep the waveform, 1.5v 9v, etc.
Cheers mate, I popped down the workshop today and add the fix to the video 😅
On your secondary coil test (12:36) --- when it's inverted like that- just flip your clamp over on the wire and it will flip your waveform
Inductive clamps don’t work like that; it will work for an amp clamp 👍
Muy bien!! Te consulto
Tengo el mismo osciloscopio modelo Owon HDS242 ¿ como configurar la señal de secundario de bobina para ver pico inductivo invertido hacia arriba? Veo en su video que la señal esta hacia abajo
The new Model has 4x sample size, tried it? Seems like it can really make the difference with fast signals and zooming, but lack the expirence to actually know 😂
No I haven’t! Sounds good. The settings aren’t the easiest on this tool. But quite powerful once your learn 😁
ONLY SPEAKING FROM MY EXPERIENCE ,,,,, BUT FOR ONE THERE'S TO MUCH BUTTONOLEGE AND ALSO FOR A NEW OR NOVICE USER THIS WILL NOT BE SOMETHING EASY TO USE AND LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT THE SCREEN SIZE . LOVE YOUR CHANNEL THANKS FOR YOUR TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍
It’s not the easiest to use. If you already know scopes, it helps. But you’re right. Difficult for beginners 👍
For sure, settings are a learning curve 👍
GREAT Video - Thank You! One question tho, I don't see a link to the little car waveform generator. Do you have a link for that please or if not, do you have an alternate? I really like how you can clip on to various parts of the car and have different waveforms.
I think it’s discontinued from Snap On. We have a video about it too 👍
@@MechanicMindset - can you suggest an alternate that does similar things?
I bought the same but slightly newer. If you have trouble as an expert, what chance do I have in figuring out it how to use this correctly!? 😂 Looking now at PC-based oscilloscopes with access to known goods.
It’s ok once you start using it it; I think their challenge is packing all the oscilloscope features in to a small package. I use it regularly now but admittedly; I often hit the wrong button for adjusting the scales. No biggie 👍
Really interesting video. Btw can you explain about that bench testing tool..? Simulation device?
We have a video on this too 👍
That looks a decent handheld scope, I been looking at the uscope but seems overpriced this may be a great alternative!
Hi. Can you check signal diesel piezo injector???
Hello
, Merry Christmas thank you for the demonstration, I wanted to take one for work I will stay on my picoscope
Pico does the job! 👍
Thanks
Thanks for that look at this scope. Where or what is the part number of that snapon signal generator?
EESX306SP 👍
@@MechanicMindset good point about the batteries i will look into it when the original batteries need to be replaced 👍

Yeah 40Mhz is more than plenty I think. My old Pico Automotive 4423 is 20Mhz 👍
I didn’t try the Auto setting. But fond it can be erratic on other oscilloscope so I just set it manually 👍

Hi daren great videos! I love using the Pico6 but one problem I have is that my degree rulers are only up to 360 degrees, how can I get it to 720 degrees?
Just double click the box that says 360 and change it 👍
The fact that you can't see the crank signal when you increase the time base is because the screen resolution is so small. With only 320 pixels in horizontal resolution, and detail is lost and this is what you get.
