  • Lol Tolhurst, drummer and co-founder of The Cure, first met lead singer Robert Smith when they were just five years-old. Together with their other Catholic school friend Michael Dempsey, they would go on to make dark, brooding music that reflected the isolation they felt as the only punks living in their small English town. As The Cure’s sound developed in the 1980s, they released a string of three albums that Lol now defines as the band’s “goth period.” Today we’ll hear Lol talk in detail about making those albums.
Last month Lol released the book “Goth: A History,” which explores the architects of the post-punk genre-bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and Bauhaus. In addition to his book “Goth,” Lol is also releasing a new album with his old friend Budgie, the drummer from the Banshees. The album’s called Los Angeles and it features an all-star guest list including U2's The Edge and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Okay. Here's what I am thinking. Think of YOUR friends! Now what if you knew ROBERT SMITH (ordinary name. Definitely not ordinary guy!) as pals since you were 5, AND play those incredible drums on those CURE albums!! I wanna talk to this guy now!

I'd say. Fitting drummer for these beauties. The cure got to a point where they needed Andy. Boris. As lol was okay. Sadly couldn't keep up musically. Plus. Seems to have pissed off Smith.

In all honestly though, if truth be told, in the early-ish days of their career no-one really at the time used the term "goth" when talking about The Cure - they would have always been considered primarily as a post-punk band.

Right! I was a Cure fan in the 17S, F and P years (I'm still a fan of the "old" Cure, btw!) and we just called it new wave back then. Had never heard of goth in those years... it's a term I first came across late 80s or maybe early 90s even when I heard people describing the "new" of the Disintegration era (which I think is not bad at all, but it doesn't grab me as much as the first four album do). The first four albums are really iconic!
