Interesting that it seems to have a separate gain setting for line-level inputs, something that is missing on my Tascam DR 05-X. On the other hand, a maximum recording quality of 44.1kHz / 16 bit looks like a limitation. For digitizing analogue audio, I prefer using an audio interface to record directly to a computer. Very decent interfaces with up to 192 kHz/24 bit capability (the 24 bit part is important for dynamic range) can be had from the likes of Behringer, Focusrite, MOTU,... for a reasonable cash outlay. Keep up the interesting videos !
I do believe there many settings in the device that control auto start and auto shut off. Never used those features myself, but I am quite sure it can do it.
Hey great video, I want to ask about the distance range without an external mic, how do you think will it go with my recording in a lecture class with no external mic and how good would it be when I record it on my pocket or just put on the table with me sitting on the back or front?
There are many settings that are suited for each situation. From my experience, the built in mic is very sensitive, and gives very clear results. As far as etting it on a table, if you wanted to record a group, there is a setting for that. It is a very versatile machine.
I'd advise against this recorder if you're considering using it in conjunction with professional camera equipment, maybe a camcorder or mirrorless camera setup. It suffers from truly horrible audio drift, especially over longer periods. TASCAM's offerings seem to be generally more reliable.
Thank you for a very comprehensive review and tutorial!!!!! I'm seriously considering getting this recorder!
Glad it was helpful!

You have many good points. You are right, there are probably ways to digitize that would yield higher bitrate. But for me, this thing works fine.
Comprehensive tutorial , can the unit record while also connected via usb ? Thank you
Hmmm, good question. I never actually tried that. Anyone?
from 1 - 10, what is your satisfaction rating for this device? I'm considering buying this tool.
I would definitely give it a 9.
@@techreviewguy7771 yes finally I also bought this tool.
Thanks for review- question, how do I set this device to automatically start recording when people talk and shut off when there is silence?

I liked your review. I sent for one. I want to record an audio book. Do you know if you can erase old recordings( practice & tests )? Thanks
Yes, it's very easy to delete any old recordings.

Thanks for your comments. i was unaware of the audio drift issues.
