We used to send food and clothings those years for our relatives.....fast forward today, there are adequate meals on the table, great infrastructures, healthcare and proper education. China imports wheat from Russia. Food security has been a strategic issue to China. It is about agriculture land, also about diversification into areas such as fishery. Chinese has a great food culture since ancient times, that's not something that can be developed from constant shortage of food. It's been a challenge in recent hundred years.
Well, a half-kilo of grain a day isn't starving, but it would have to be spread around evenly! I don't think there was any way to DO that in the day, I think there are parts of China that are just getting roads NOW! Today we sometimes see really fat people on the street in China, which is startling, but I guess it's a kind of rough measure. I'm starting to see videos of "poor villages" in China that look like decent places to live!
