- Since 2015, there have been a consistent release of David Bowie "Era" Boxsets with a new one on the horizon as this video is being uploaded. Each "Era" boxset features fresh remasters for the albums in the period of time it covers along with a few goodies too - the main one being "Re:Call". "Re:Call" is a compilation of singles that have been released during the 'era' covered and remasters both A-Sides and B-Sides too with even minor single edits getting a remaster too. Every boxset has its own "Re:Call" however the very first "Re:Call" is unavailable on UA-cam so I've decided to re-upload a handful of the rarities from the collection in their 2015 remastered form!
This is a cover of a song by Jacques Brel which has been covered by Bowie a handful of times. This is a studio version which was released as the B-Side to "Sorrow" and has seen various re-releases since.
The genius of David Bowie giving fresh voice to the genius of Jacques Brel.
Bowie was an incredible interpreter of other people's music.
Have you ever listened to his Baal EP?
Stunning and chilling at the same time.
"...the french" voice more than "fresh".
@@stephane5074, Brel sang in French, whilst Bowie sang English translations, so your 'pun' makes no sense.
Absolutely right!👍🙏🔥❤️🔥🙏⚡
Of all his cover versions ( some excellent and let's be honest some not great) this is in my opinion only his best. Cactus and Kingdom Come are also brilliant. Wild is the Wind is ok. Check his albums and from hunky dory onwards there's a cover on them( not sure about diamond dogs) .Pin ups is an album of covers and Sorry is very good from that album along with Friday on my mind. His truly awful covers and again only my opinion are God only knows of the Tonight album and I feel free of btwn album. Across the universe from Young American's is very good as to is his cover of Springsteen's Hard to be a saint in the city. But this version of Amsterdam is just amazing. Just my personal tastes and would like to know what you guys think?
thank's david jones RIP forever the nicest

Paroles
In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who sings
Of the dreams that he brings from the wide open sea
In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who sleeps
While the river bank weeps to the old willow tree
In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who dies
Full of beer, full of cries in a drunken town fight
In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who's born
On a hot muggy morn by the dawn's early light
In the port of Amsterdam where the sailors all meet
There's a sailor who eats only fish heads and tails
And he'll show you his teeth that have rotted too soon
That can haul up the sails that can swallow the moon
And he yells to the cook with his arms open wide
"Hey, bring me more fish, throw it down by my side"
And he wants so to belch but he's too full to try
So he stands up and laughs and he zips up his fly
In the port of Amsterdam you can see sailors dance
Paunches bursting their pants grinding women to porch
They've forgotten the tune that their whiskey voice croaked
Splitting the night with the roar of their jokes
And they turn and they dance and they laugh and they lust
Till the rancid sound of the accordion bursts
And then out of the night with their pride in their pants
And the sluts that they tow underneath the street lamps
In the port of Amsterdam there's a sailor who drinks
And he drinks and he drinks and he drinks once again
He'll drink to the health of the whores of Amsterdam
Who've given their bodies to a thousand other men
Yeah, they've bargained their virtue, their goodness all gone
For a few dirty coins, well, he just can't go on
Throws his nose to the sky and he aims it up above
And he pisses like I cry on the unfaithful love
In the port of Amsterdam
In the port of Amsterdam
Still sounds good in 2024
Classic bowie. From when I was a teenager in the early 70s 👍
"Jest port wielki jak świat,
co się zwie Amsterdam,
marynarze od lat
pieśni swe nucą tam.
Jest jak świat wielki port,
marynarze w nim śpią,
jak daleki śpi fiord,
zanim świt zbudzi go.
Jest port wielki jak świat,
marynarze w nim mrą,
umierają co świt,
pijąc piwo i klnąc...
Jest port wielki jak świat,
co się zwie Amsterdam,
marynarze od lat
nowi rodzą się tam.
Marynarze od lat
złażą tam ze swych łajb,
obrus wielki jak świat
czeka ich w każdej z knajp,
obnażają swe kły,
chcące wgryźć się w tę noc,
w białe podbrzusza ryb,
w spasły księżyc i w los.
Do łapczywych ich łap
wszystko wpada na żer,
tłuszcz skapuje - kap, kap,
z rybich wątrób i serc.
Potem pijani w sztok
w mrok odchodzą spod wiech,
a z bebechów ich w krąg
płynie czkawka i śmiech.
Jest port wielki jak świat,
co się zwie Amsterdam,
marynarze od lat
tańce swe tańczą tam,
lubią to bez dwóch zdań,
lubią to bez zdań dwóch,
gdy o brzuchy swych pań
ocierają swój brzuch.
Potem buch kogoś w łeb,
aż na dwoje mu pękł,
bo wybrzydzał się kiep
na harmonii mdły jęk.
Akordeon też już
wydał ostatni dech
i znów obrus i tłuszcz,
i znów czkawka i śmiech.
Jest port wielki jak świat,
co się zwie Amsterdam,
marynarze od lat
zdrowie pań piją tam,
pań tych zdrowie co noc
piją grudzień czy maj,
które za złota trzos
otwierają im raj.
A dżin, wódka i grog,
a grog, wódka i dżin
rozpalają im wzrok,
skrzydeł przydają im,
żeby na skrzydłach tych
mogli wzlecieć hen tam,
skąd się smarka na świat
i na port Amsterdam
i na port Amsterdam"
"Amsterdam" by Jacques Brel, translated from the French original by Wojciech Młynarski.
Magnifique. Worderful. Thank you 💞💞
'wonderful'
Bowie admired Brel. He proposed to Brel a collaboration, in the '60s. Brel's answer was short 'I will never sing with that faggot'. Bowie translated perfectly 2 songs, ' My death's and this one. Encourage you to listen to Brel's version of 'my death/ma mort' and the Bowie version from the '60s , And the Bowie version from 97, worth listening too! All this is on UA-cam
👍⚡🙏🔥❤️🔥🙏
did he really call Bowie a "faggot"?
David Bowie at the early peak of his amazing career. This interpretation made me find the original Brel recordings and may be even better than the original.
One of best
Got this single !!
I used to have it. Donr know where it went
Ooof. Bowie lead me to Brêl. And now I can't even take a second of this. Double-oof. RIP Ronno. RIP Dave. RIP Jacques.. Fuck us. Fuck all of us. We still are alive.
Such a different voice
