This house is utterly empty. It is thronging with presences. weeping, I cannot find my voice which is everywhere. These are but dream-crossed twilights between birth and dying.
Tom Waits - "Dirt in the Ground" What does it matter A dream of love, or a dream of lies? We're all gonna be in the same place when we die Your spirit don't leave knowing Your face or your name The wind through your bones as all that remains And we're all gonna be, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground The quill from a buzzard The blood writes the word I want to know am I the sky or a bird? 'Cause hell is boiling over And heaven is full We're chained to the world And we all gotta pull And we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground Now the killer was smiling With nerves made of stone He climbed the stairs And the gallows groaned And the people's hearts were pounding They were throbbing, they were red He swung out over the crowd, I heard the hangman said We're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground Now, Cain slew Abel He killed him with a stone The sky cracked open And the thunder groaned Along a river of flesh Can these dry bones live? Take a king or a beggar And the answer they'll give Is we're all gonna be yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground We're all going to be just dirt in the ground We're all going to be just dirt in the ground I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground Yeah, we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
110%. I remember when I knew arrived to USA from Bangladesh and one of my friend gave me the cassette. I listened to it over 6-7 time and my friend thought I was crazy because I was only 16 and he's like what the f*** how do you even like this one?
This guy is the realist most LO FI not like the modern concept of lofi, which as all fruityloops daw etc, this man got amazing good artists and sent them to his shed to record while only listening to a song once, and that was the master...trust in the artists, banging pots and pans in a shed...tom is the man
I'm 50. I've never listened to this guy until now. There was an old picture of him on Reddit, so here I am. I have to say that I'm certsinly intrigued enough two songs in to want to listen to more. Strange voice, soulful but like he's singing from a previous life or an old world if that makes sense.
Buddy, if this is the first time you've heard Tom Waits, you have a LOT of albums to listen to. I envy you starting on Waits for the first time. Start with his 70's stuff and just keep going.
Omg! I just turned 50 myself and I wish I could experience Tom Waits again for the first time. Enjoy the discography! This song is a particular favorite

Hei, Tom Waits fans, please listen to a band called 'Kellermensch' from Copenhagen. They are influenced by MR Waits, & Have a pretty good cover of 'dirt in the ground'..
Slow and langourous. What was that chinese philosopher, asked by the emperor to join him in the royal court, that asked him to join the court. Said the emperor, "i give u a choice to join me, you will have the best food, women, comfort, luxury servants... in return for your wisdom/mind. Or... You wanna just keep draggin your tail thru the mud?" "Yep" screw your court. "I'd rather be a turtle, free, draggin my tail thru the mud, than a lackey, coddled in your prison."
Haha, i'm also listening cause of what Vai said, i don't know yet...Can't say i'm lovin' it. But it is what it is. Sometimes music grows on you. Remember the first time i heard Meshuggah, i thought it was cool, but i had to listen a couple of times to really get it. You can check out my featured video "You're The One" Tho. It's a bit more fire then this track, i promise you (Rock'n roll Shuffle in memory of EVH).
This is not a good song/album to start listening through Tom Waits catalogue. Start on Blue Valentine or Heartattack and Vine. Then follow with Rain Dogs or Mule Variations. If you get there and you like what you hear, then it's your call to go either way with Real Gone or Orphans or whatever
@@MaxFury_Official I think Tom Waits is like many unique genius artists in various fields. It takes exposure and time to truly appreciate what its genius and what it has to offer us. Like Jackson Pollock’s art or John Coltrane’s music, or Pynchon’s book Gravity’s Rainbow.
I crawl into my into my soul when I listen to this song. Tom Waits is a legend in our time. So to much 😢
One of the finest songs ever put to tape...and the live version is even better.
Which live version? I want to know beery berry bery much
@@brento3 The one from Glitter and Doom album.

What a genius !!!
So soulful
This is my favourite song, and I even say say that when sober! I genuinely don't think any song/book/film/tv show has had such an impact on me
You should check out some blue Niles it's going to take you time to grow on it 👍
My favorite Tom Waits song
Can’t believe I’ve already been listening to this album for 5 years. Time flies when you listen to Tom. Love ya bro!
I have been listening to this album for 30 years and every time I hear it, I am absolutely blown away.
My gawd, thanks Tom!
we are only dirt....and beautiful ♥️
hell's boilin over and heaven is full, we're chained to the world and we all gotta pull
Tom Waits es eterno. No importa nada mas.
Tom Waits - "Dirt in the Ground"
What does it matter
A dream of love, or a dream of lies?
We're all gonna be in the same place when we die
Your spirit don't leave knowing
Your face or your name
The wind through your bones as all that remains
And we're all gonna be, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
The quill from a buzzard
The blood writes the word
I want to know am I the sky or a bird?
'Cause hell is boiling over
And heaven is full
We're chained to the world
And we all gotta pull
And we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
Now the killer was smiling
With nerves made of stone
He climbed the stairs
And the gallows groaned
And the people's hearts were pounding
They were throbbing, they were red
He swung out over the crowd, I heard the hangman said
We're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
Now, Cain slew Abel
He killed him with a stone
The sky cracked open
And the thunder groaned
Along a river of flesh
Can these dry bones live?
Take a king or a beggar
And the answer they'll give
Is we're all gonna be yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all gonna be, yeah, yeah
I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
We're all going to be just dirt in the ground
We're all going to be just dirt in the ground
I said we're all going to be just dirt in the ground
Yeah, we're all going to be just dirt in the ground

The song, and Mr. Waits himself, are criminally underrated.
Is for Heaven and beyond.
Luckilly he's not for people who like and know good music !!
One of hundret Thanks
I played Tom for a friend of mine. She asked what decade is he from. I said 1850 to present.

I've had my eye on the revstars because they're chambered. My next guitar might be the revstar merlot w the p90s. Thanks for the demo. Sounds great!

Hey man, I looked for the Version from Kellermensch. I sounds amazing! Thank you so much for the recommendation! :)
Sounds like 'Teleharmonic' from The Smile borrowed heavily from this song
Full of dirt but oozes with ground breaking blues..
Can't break new ground without getting a little dirty.
