I've always been a fan of Shemp. He didn't try to replace or imitate Curly, but had a style of his own. Died too young.

psalm37v4-Yep. He and Curly were the only two Stooges that didn't live to 70; Curly didn't even make it to 50.

I could not help but notice, Shemp (and the other Stooges), in their OWN PHOTOS taken of their private lives during these happy times such as their son's wedding, they look much "better" or more handsome or attractive and even more 'intelligent' than they do when "acting". I know they use "make up" but Clearly...... they "acted" with their FACES as well as every other technique they knew. It is just not all delivering "lines" and prat falls. Those guys were really good, they lived GOOD LIVES, raised good families, and they still make people laugh. What a fine video and tribute!!! I cannot imagine anyone disliking this video!!!

I never thought of Shemp as homely or ugly. His face had a lot a character + a VERY funny soul. His grace & comedic timing was what made me love him & his performances as well. We lost a great comic too soon!

      I totally agree !
My uncle Ken resembled Shemp alot. He tended bar at the corner tap.
He would do Shemp imitations for us, especially his boxing routine.
      Shoot one at at me.

Shemp's son Morton was a fairly good-looking guy. Sadly, he was yet another Horwitz/Howard family member who died in his forties.

Shemp ugly ?? NO WAY !!! Like you said, his face had so much character. I always see him doing his "Oh Oh Oh" with his head in a vice. :)

I love Shemp. In his own way he was actually better than Curly. I can never understand why some people don't like him or never even give him a chance. He was the original 3rd stooge. I love all of the Stooges, and Shemp is in every way as much an equal and just as great and funny as Curly. The Stooges will live on forever.

It's not surprising that neither Besser nor DeRita fit in too well as Stooges.
They came to the Stooges relatively late in life, didn't have the time or history that Shemp or Curly did, and never felt comfortable with the Stooges style of comedy.

1962 in Kindergarten, another little boy and I got in trouble during nap time on the floor for snoring like the Three Stooges, making almost the entire class laugh. I don't remember anything I learned in in science class in high school, but still remember that day in Kindergarten. I'd do it again if I had the chance. Today, the wife and I tell each other we heard each other snore the previous night, and say "You sounded like Curly last night: "Woob woob woob woob woob." Or Shemp: "Me-me-me -me -me me me."

I loved Shemp. He was his own man and a gifted comedian. He wasn't Curly and didn't try to he. He had his own style and personality. A comedic gift to mankind. He certainly wasn't "homely." Look at pictures of him in family photos and in private without make up and out of character. He was certainly not homely, just down to earth.

    • @radicalross7700
      @radicalross7700 3 місяці тому

True enough. While Shemp certainly looked his age as he grew older, he wasn't really homely. At worse, Shemp was just average looking when he wasn't mugging for comic effect.

His granddaughter Jill was 3 when he died. I was 3 when a great aunt died. She say she remembered a lot about him, just like as young as I was I remembered a lot about Aunt, which is a blessing. I miss her a lot. It's wonderful the Stooges and their family and even in laws was so close knit. That's hard to find now. I am a Christian who believes in End Time scripture. I know the discord in so many families was prophecied and I still, things may have happened in my family, I've made mistakes too with them but I still hold family to be very important.

My dad introduced my older brothet and myself to the stooges shorts in the 70s. Curly is an icon, however I have always liked Shemp for his own comedy and style. I was also taught that he had started the stooges and for me that makes him the best Stooge of them all.

I had to watch the Three Stooges' movies at least 500 times. In the late 1970s, they made a huge come back in colleges. A friend of mine, Bobby Trolice, who played football with me for the St.Peters Peacocks had a device installed in his car that when he hit his horn, a recording of Curly screaming "WHY YOUuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!! The reactions it got should have been on film. It was simply hysterical. The Three Stooges are a great American Institution of slapstick comedy.

It’s so weird that there are people commenting her that are obviously huge fans of the Stooges, and yet seem to be so critical of Shemp’s loved ones who have devoted time to make this piece of film.
His daughter-in-law got his cause of death wrong. So what? Shemp loved these people, and they loved him. I am tickled to get a glimpse of the actual guy, off-screen.

Ya alot of what she says seems a little inaccurate. She also says Shemp was responsible for Curly's bald head, but I heard an interview with Moe himself where he says they were discussing what to do about his hair, which was thick and wavy at the time, and Curly said don't worry about my hair and left only to come back later with his bald head. He made no mention of Shemp coming up with the idea at all.

    • @Drue7

Also I heard Larry's sister say in an interview that Shemp happened to see Larry at a show he was attending in Chicago, and went back to Ted Healy to tell him about a violinist he seen that nighy that would be a good addition to the act. This lady seems to be making it up on the spot.

@@ogpigeon4431 I'd like to think so. Shemp took his fair share of head bops, too; he suffered a minor stroke in November, 1952, but recovered without any noticeable effect on him. Of course Moe also got his head knocks as well (see Slippery Silks where he and Larry got their heads knocked together), but I never read anything into his having any strokes because of it; he just suffered from, and eventually died of lung cancer.

I just came across this video today. I'm one of those fans who loved Shemp from the first time I saw him & it always bothered me a bit why he would get such a bad rap at being "Curly's replacement." I love Curly, but Shemp was a legend in his own right, I'm glad there are videos like this to keep his memories alive and that the fame & popularity of the Stooges will live on, forever....

He went solo after leaving the stooges, him being the original 3 cause he had enough of Ted Healey the creater. That was when Curly came in. He went on solo until Curly got sick and not wanting More and Larry to lose out on their career, came back until Curly recovered which he never did. He never went back solo cause he died being with the stooges. I respect him greatly for his dedication to his brothers

He actually had an even more extensive filmography than that, in both starring and supporting roles. This is a representation of his non-Stooge work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shemp_Howard#Filmography_(Non-Stooge). I've seen a couple of his starring solo shorts, and he seemed to generally be in a Ted Healy type role, as in a boss with underlings, rather than part of a trio.
