    1. This is based on a poem by Leonardo da Vinci.
    2. The game covers all of human history from the invention of agriculture in the stone age to space flight. It was created by Sid Meier who is a notorious history buff. Some of his games cover specific times and places (e.g. games about pirates or railroad tycoons), but this one covers absolutely everything from a fairly macroscopic view. Cultures from every continent, world wonders, technological upheavals, all of it.
It used to be that games would put the most impressive music in the intro movie, but most people only watch that once and only once. Civilization 4 started the trend of putting the best music in the title screen, where you get to hear it every time you launch the game. Civilization 4 used Baba Yetu by the same composer. That song is based on the Lord's Prayer translated to Swahili, and it's also worth checking out.

Eyyyy it's insane how long ago I requested this! Glad it's finally here, something different for Jesse to hear :D
Grammy award winning composer Christopher Tin wrote several albums, one representing the unification of the world, one to represent the flow and life of water, and one to represent mankind's potential to reach the skies and soar. Recently he wrote an album that serves as an elergy to the extinction of birds. What's amazing is that all of these albums is a musical ear-scape that seeks to tell stories or images as you listen through the songlists.
Sogno Di Volare and Baba Yetu are the only songs he wrote specifically for the Civ games, but there's an amazing amount of tracks that you likely won't hear since they're not "video game" music so you should definitely check out others!

Honestly, I agree with you, Baba Yetu is a banger on it's own, but for people that aren't that religious, this song of which is made from a I think a poem or text written by Leonardo da Vinci, can have that much more impact, as it doesn't really depend on faith, but the dream of flying and filling the universe with wonder.

All of his symphonic suites are sung in all kinds of languages from all around the world and have various world music and/or very hopeful, celebrating classical vibes. They all carry incredible imagery imo. Actually when you say anthem, this is a perfect word to describe it all: it's an Anthem to humanity, history and discovery.

But yes, Christopher Tin's win of Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for a video game composition was unprecedented at the time.

In addition to what others have said: this song not only plays in the main menu, but while you're loading up a game. While your game is loading, there's a small narration about the era of the world that you're currently in in game, as well as about the the leader of the civilization you're playing as in that game. Regardless, we should always be striving for this glorious, light and hopeful incarnation of humanity. And I feel like stories and music like this can help capture and guide you towards that feeling and mindset. If we didn't have these glances into / towards our better versions, it would be that much harder to reach for them.

The feeling the song gave you is very accurate as for the game you choose a civilization and build them up to greatness from the stone age to the modern era, rising them to greatness, or failing through the tribulations of building your empire. You manage various aspects of the government, and move units around on a hex map, deciding where to settle cities and defending your borders, or attacking other civilizations. The paths to victory are numerous, and it's a very addicting game.

  • @Futune_
    @Futune_ Рік тому +7

So it's been a while since I've played Civilization 6, but if I remember correctly, this is the opening theme for the game. The Civilization game series is a 4x strategy game that is about establishing a nation (One that does or has existed) from the beginning of known civilization to modern (and somewhat future) times. You settle a city, develop it and research technologies while constructing units and exploring the world. There are other civilizations on the map as well that you compete against to claim land for more cities, resources, and strategic locations. victory is achieved in many ways, such as cultural dominance, military dominance, or even science dominance by being the first to space, and each civilization has their own perks and special units. If you've ever seen the meme about Ghandi threatening to nuke people, its origin is this series because of a glitch in the original game making him extremely aggressive instead of pacifist. And as for Sid Meier, he is the original creator of the series and continues to work as a founder and director in Firaxis games, the company that makes the series currently. Looking forward to your future reactions to Civilization songs, they all are generally representative of the civilizations in the game they are themes of throughout the ages!

The Entire game soundtrack is phenomenal. There are many civilizations from ancient to modern times and they all have unique themed music and it's top notch.
"Sogno di Volare" is a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci (a great engineer that provides bonus culture and eurekas in Civ 6). It's about his attempts at flight using the mountain Monte Ceceri.
Civilization 6 is a grand strategy 4x game where you start off with a settler and build an empire throughout the changing eras. Every game is unique even with the exact same game seed and map script. Extreme replayability.

Civilization games are turn-based strategy, you pick a historical civilization and basically manage them through history competing against a load of other civilizations.
Christopher Tin was roommates at College with one of the game designers of Civilization 4, and wrote the title music for that game as well, Baba Yetu, which is an orchestral arrangement of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili, and is the first video game song to win a Grammy. I haven't checked but I am sure it's on your request list.
Tin has an album from the late 00s that I think you'd like to listen to, "Calling All Dawns". It's 12 songs in 3 movements and every song is written in a different language.
Edit: oh and a really cool thing about Civ 6's music is that in-game, there are four different themes for each Civ depending on how advanced through history you currently are, each one is basically a development of the previous era, and the tune they use is usually related to that Civ. So for England, they use the melody to Scarborough Fair, the first tune is just the basic melody on a flute(?). By the time you get to the Atomic Era at the end of the game it's this full orchestral piece that goes on for 4+ minutes. While you're in a game you hear all the tunes of the other Civs that you've met (game normally has 6-10 depending on map size), and there's about 50 civs to choose from in 6! My personal favourite is the Zulu theme, which is this really uplifting chant which by the Atomic era becomes this really fun autotuned(!) anthem.

The very first Civ was a strategy, turn-based board game. Now it's a popular video game franchise, that plays similar to a board game. Usually between 4 to 8 players.
Basically you pick a Civ with a leader (can go from Gilgamesh leading the Sumerian to Lincoln leading the Americans), each with their own unique perks, start the game in the Ancient Era, and can go even beyond our current era.
The goal is to have the most prosperous civilization, either by conquering space, crushing your enemies, spreading your religion...
You can also make alliances and ennemies.
Sounds addictive? It's worse than you imagine. "Just one more turn" is a popular saying in the community.
Oh and each Civ has their own theme song, which evolves as the game progresses through the ages.

  • @kind_stone

Christopher Tin wrote an album called "Calling All Dawns" soon after doing his masterpiece "Baba Yetu" and that album was a spiritual experience for me in all aspects. Still inspires me greatly to this day. Christopher and his music have a special place in my heart, especially since Baba Yetu was one of my first entries into gaming music and Civilization 4 was one of my first gaming experiences overall.
I probably won't lie if I say that Christopher shows us that there's still much to be explored and done even in terms of "classical" music. With new cultures being explored by people all around the world it can evolve too, by including new instruments like traditional instruments of different peoples, their languages and poetry, their styles of music (see Baba Yetu and give a listen to the entire album "Calling All Dawns" because that is the entire idea behind it, exploring different cultures and exposing the fact that all cultures have things that everyone on Earth can sympathize with).

Also, if you loved this, in your spare time you could listen to the "expansion" album that Christopher Tin made based solely on this piece (or rather, this piece was so big that he thought it warranted it's own full blown album). Basically it's addicting and people lose hours to 'just one more turn' that turns into another. And another. If Frostpunk is a basebuilder, then Civ is an empire builder. 'Build a civilization that will stand the test of time' i think was there tagline. Commonly start in the stone age and progress through human history until you build a space program and start interstellar flight, or take over the world. Among other win conditions.

Civ 6’s Sumeria theme is the adapted from the Hurrian Hymn, the oldest known written music ever discovered (from tablets c.1400BC). Incredible shit.

    The game is basically
You choose a country and start with it on a map in ancient time. You build up your empire, expand, choose your politics and destroy/make alliances with others. You can play it with 8 Players or AI bots

Personally, I like Baba Yetu slightly more, but only slightly. Baba Yetu is the title soundtrack for Civilization IV. And Sogno Di Volare is for Civ VI. Both are exceptionally good. But in my estimation, Baba Yetu definitely caught on more in Choirs around the world.

The game is a civilization building game. You start as nomads in the stone age, found a city, and expand as you progress through the different eras of human history, researching new technologies and adapting different government styles. You can win the game through conquest, culture, Diplomacy, Science, or Religion.
The game is pretty great, and is nefarious for pulling you into an all night gaming binge without you realizing it. I've had a few times where I sit down and I'm like, ok, I'm gonna play a few hours then go to bed, then next thing you know you hear birds chirping outside and you look to see the sun rising.
    TIP: DO NOT TRUST GANDHI

Christopher Tin has some kind of Midas Hand when it comes to game music. The moment he touches it, it turns to gold.
I didn't know he was responsible for the op of civ6, but when I learned it, I was like "so that's why I like it so much, makes sense"

There are likely two main reasons you, personally, haven't heard of this franchise....
Firstly, you seem to pay more attention to console gaming, but while there are one or two console entries in the franchise (more spin-off titles than one of the major numbered ones), but this is series is more popular for the PC/home computer style market.
Secondly, this franchise is highly focused on relatively deep or expansive, turn based strategy... You seem more interested in flashy action games... Not to say that there is anything wrong with that or that you couldn't enjoy the game regardless, but it likely wouldn't be the sort of thing you were looking out for... Within overall gaming it's a bit niche, but if you're into this type of game, it's one of the bigger titles, I think...
Sid Meier is mostly known for the Civilisation series now, but he had various other games... He's been working in the games industry since the early 80s... Probably best known for strategy and simulation games... He helped found Microprose, then later he left and formed Firaxis games, I think... I don't know if you'd be familiar with either, but maybe you might have bumped into those at some point... He probably didn't invent the 4X genre, but he probably was one that helped popularise it... His companies created a bunch of them...
Civ games have a lot of cool and chill, yet also epic soundtracks... I think you could possibly even enjoy the game... That said, I'm not sure you'd appreciate how much of a time sink it can be lol. Turns can go pretty quickly at the start, but as your empire grows, suddenly you have a load to manage... More recent titles can help you automate things more, but if you're playing a big map, things can get crazy, especially if you're at war and having to direct your armies or whatever... And you always have to be careful about upsetting Ghandi, because he can get trigger happy lol .

Civ VI is both the best and worst 4x strategy game, to the point where new 4x games are marketed as "Civ Killers"
Essentially, you build your empire from the Stone Age to the "Future Era" and battle for dominance over other Civilizations in Religion, War, Science and Tourism
