The Classic Sonic Trilogy was strong enough to give SUPER MARIO a run for his money, and that's really impressive seeing as Mario is the undisputed king of video games. Join me as I look back on Sonic's first 3 (4?) adventures, and feel free to tell me what you think about them in the comments down below!

Being a 5 year old in 1994 sonic 3 and knuckles was the greatest thing ever!!! And if I’m honest it is still my favourite game to this day and I am now 33
Yup incredible game blew my mind
Preach.
Epic / relatable comment & Knuckles
No joke, I had a History test today and the title at the top said "1960s: The Test" and I wrote & Knuckles underneath. Curious to see what the teacher thinks
What did she say?
Lock on technology is amazing I can’t believe you can lock on Sonic and Knuckles to a history test
I'll take "Things that never happened" for $500
@@TheSuperuser49 how's that unrealistic?
Ok, a follow up. Yes, I actually did this because my teacher is cool, so I knew I could get away with it. All he did was circle it in red, and then he connected a line to the word "What?" on the outside of the circle. He's not a gamer, ig

44:19 RIP Knuckles
Fun Fact: In the Chemical Plant Zone boss, as Sonic, you can actually crouch to avoid ever getting hit by the blue liquid that eggman dumps onto you. This only works as Sonic though, since Tails' hitbox doesn't shift down enough when he crouches to avoid it.
I'm sure that part of my reason for preferring Sonic 2 over 1 is due to having played 2 first - the Genesis + Sonic 2 bundle was my first game console back in 1992 (I had just turned 4). I didn't get to play Sonic 1 until after Sonic 3 had been released, so not having access to what had become the norm in terms of QoL features and other gameplay elements made the game more difficult. I still enjoy it for what it is though. Sonic 3 & Knuckles definitely hits home as the "epic" of the classic collection, but because 2 was my first I'll always find more joy in it (I recently started learning the speed run for it). I didn't get the chance to play Sonic CD until it came out on PC in 1996 - Metal Sonic always freaked me out as a child but I grew to appreciate it later on, especially after playing it again on Sonic Gems Collection.
Regarding getting all the Emeralds in Emerald Hill, I didn't think it was possible getting them all in Act 1 because of how the game flags checkpoints as "used". The game's also nasty in that if you hit a checkpoint at a later point in a level and try to come back to an earlier one you missed, it will also be flagged as "used". Maybe there's some sort of resetting option I'm not aware of in the Retro Engine ports.. I know there are enough checkpoints between acts 1 and 2 though.
Finally, thank you for the longform video! I hope you're able to get your Genesis up and running again. Otherwise Analogue has their Mega Drive-design Mega Sgs back in stock as an alternative. And Sonic 2 was a lot of fun! Made me feel like a kid again seeing that ending play out in a theater. Have a wonderful day!✨
i like Sonic 2 more than Sonic 1, because Sonic 2 was more about going fast and it never slowed you down too much. In Sonic 1, the levels are more balanced on speed.
Green Hill fast, Marble slow, Spring Yard in the middle, Labyrinth slow, Starlight fast, Scrap Brain kinda fast.
In Sonic 2, every level had you go fast most of the time, and slow down once in a while. In Sonic Mania, only 1 level from Sonic 1 got reused, (GHZ) but 2 levels from Sonic 2 got reused.
Also, Sonic 2 was the first installment of Sonic to make him go faster by adding in the spindash.
the whole stage always resets after exiting a special stage in sonic the hedgehog 2
also Talis' full name is Miles "Tails" Prower which is one of the very few non "[name] the [species]" names, and I'm tired of people forgetting that

You got one thing entirely wrong...Lava Reef Zone Act 2 in S3&K definitely has a Boss fight. One of the best in the game in my opinion
Sonic will be about 16 years older than me, and I love it, sometimes the games suck but I like the character. I got out of liking sonic, my friends said it was cringe, can't remember why, but recently watched the sonic 2 movie... remembered the lore, drew doodled of him a few times... and well, now, here I am again. Guess you really can't not like something so important to you.
Edit: i love sonic 3 and knuckles
man, be happy loving the things you like, it's your personal tastes and your friends have to accept you liking something of yours because it's part of who you are, and there's nothing wrong with that; a friend of mine is more team mario me i'm team sonic but we both respect each other's likes and see each other as brothers, there's nothing wrong like the little blue guy and welcome again friend, hope you have a good night/day (and i also love sonic 3&k :) ).

respect for putting ``and knuckles`` in the title.

43:41 I agree, lava reef is my favorite zone.
39:09 Knuckles
Ive always loved sonic 1 over the sequel for the aesthetics alone
But that maybe partially possibly because of sonic 2 aesthetics being reused way more (not counting green hill)
I agree. I love how the first game looks, and that extends to CD for me as well. Sonic 2 just feels somewhat flat for me. I don’t know why.
Yeah.
I like how sonic 1 made alot more sense aesthetically
Still like sonic 2 tho
@Games they were going to have unique graphics for scrap brain act 3, they just ran out of time to implement them, if i recall correctly.
I don’t like how dull it looks after green hill zone
Sonic 1 looks ugly to me. I’ll always prefer sonic 2
YES! Finally someone else who likes Sonic 1 over 2, seriously Sonic 1 is so underrated and fun
This was a good insight on the old school sonic games! I didn’t know you could become super sonic in Emerald Hill zone and I also didn’t know that Emerald is like Green
I grew up with it and I didn't know for a long time until like 2017 is when I found out but I guess the name "Emerald hill zone" should of rang a bell for me? Oh well
Great video. Thank you for mentioning how awesome Mecha Sonic is. No mention of the Death Egg build up and Lava Reef Zone boss?
I've barely started the video but damn good taste in t-shirts my dude 😤
It literally improved in every way with each game
Emerald Hill being a synonym for Green - yes.
BUT also an indication that it's a more sophisticated/advanced version of bog standard green... & the design fits accordingly.
Emerald Hill needs more love, put Green Hill to sleep.
I just realized Dylan has the exact same mug as my older brother, and that couldn't be any more awesome.

@@Garrulous64 nah that doesn't matter I really like this ocarina video
The Knuckles play-through was actually my favorite part of 3&Knuckles, mainly because of the wall climb.
Short story long, Sonic 1 (16-Bit) is Sonic 1, Part 1. Sonic 1 (8-Bit), is Sonic 1, Part 2. Sonic 2 (8-Bit) is Sonic 2, Part 1. Sonic 2 (16-Bit) is Sonic 2, Part 2. Sonic CD is Sonic 2, Part 3. Sonic 3 is Sonic 3, Part 1. Sonic & Knuckles is Sonic 3, Part 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Sonic 3 Complete is the full version of Sonic 3. And Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is the true Sonic 4. Sonic's first robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 1 in Sonic 2 (8-Bit), Sonic's second robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 2 in Sonic 2 (16-Bit), Sonic's third robotic doppelganger was Metal Sonic in Sonic CD and Sonic's final robotic doppelganger was Mecha Sonic Mark 3 in the Sonic 3 series.
Sonic 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. It introduced my favorite character, Tails, and transformation, Super Sonic. The game is a fun time that isn't too long, but not too short. I love almost all the levels. Though I don't care for most of the endgame levels. It's just amazing to me as a game. I love it so much.
I hate the metropolis zone with a burning passion
I like 2 more because on my first playthrough of Sonic 1, I couldn't even get out of Green Hill, but in 2, I made it all the way to Oil Ocean without getting a game over.
34:21 - I'm drinking Sparkling Ice too as I watch this! 😅

I’m that person who usually get’s all the emeralds in emerald hill zone and if you play it even more the sonic 2 special stages are so easy
Never really thought of the fact that
⅚ Sonic 3 zones have water
The rings in Sonic 2 reset after a special stage in the original too. It's not cheating.
You were right about the movies.

Yo, just wanna say, that thumbnail is _clean._
Even though it's overused, green hill is still 1 of my favorite sonic zones, also there agent any zones in pretty much any sonic game in general & yes, i even like labyrinth zone, i don't love it though, i just like it, actually i like underwater sonic levels in general
Thats a great idea actually have a game were Eggman just keeps making labyrith zone to kill Sonic
Alright Garrulous64 getting to the big 25
0:54 idk bout that one
Huh. I can't see my name in the 1 dollar youtube sponsor area. Also great video!
Personally, I still love Sonic 1 a lot. Sure, it's not perfect and labyrinth zone is a bit more annoying than it needs to be. But when I complete the game, I truly do feel that sense of accomplishment that classic games in the past give you without the sense of me trying to pull my hair out doing so.
Sonic 3&K is easily the best game. I haven’t played it recently because I don’t have Origins so the last time I played was Sonic Mega Collection. The entire game is good. That’s all I have to say about it. Sandopolis is tedious but that’s really it. Not nad. The story is amazing. Zones, music, all of it. Mecha is no Metal but he’s cool. Hyper Sonic is redundant and I don’t miss the form but it’s still a cool prize. The bosses are fun. Knuckles routes and final boss is great and also nice redemption for him after his pathetic fight with Sonic. Hydrocity is the best classic zone. I don’t care how it’s pronounced. I say it both ways. Both make sense. But it’s the best zone imo. It’s got everything done perfectly. Speed, platforming, secrets, a good boss, the best music…both acts. The aesthetic is good, it has multiple pathways, awesome visuals, this zone is everything. It is THE Sonic level imo. Blue sphere is ok but it used to make me dizzy as a kid. It’s fun tho. Prefer Sonic 2’s half pipe, sue me. The music I gotta talk about. I love the plain Sonic 3 Knuckles theme and the act 1 boss theme is one of the best but it’s fine that they aren’t around anymore. The 3 zones is what I have to talk about. The Michael Jackson tracks were so good and it’s upsetting that they had to be replaced. Carnival Night got the best deal imo. The music isn’t bad. I actually like it. Do I prefer it? No, but I am fine with it. Still get the same feel. Ice Cap is next. I like this one too. It’s ok. I hate the snowboarding sequence with the proto music. Just doesn’t fit. Hard Times just feels like it fits it more. The rest of the zone is fine with the new theme tho. But Launch Base….oh man. This took the biggest hit for me. I loved that “go go go” mess. It got me pumped. The new music is awful. It’s just so bad. It is the only one of the three that makes the zone worse imo. Like, if I do get Origins, I don’t know if I’d be excited to play Launch Base now. It’s not the same. I know everyone loves Ice Cap’s theme and I could see many thinking that took the biggest hit. But for me it’s Launch Base. That zone’s music was more integral to it for me. Still great game. The perfect culmination of all that the other games had been building up.
I agree
I played neither 1 or 2 but i like 1's ost more, its more weird and unique and memorable imo
Yeah, for Sonic 2, I had to make a guide for it myself
Question is the background going to slowly consume him throughout the video probably won't but it would be funny you just see just his head left behind
I really like your videos
IM FROM THE FUTURE (because I got a time stone)AND YOU ARE RIGHT
34:37 well the ice cap in sonic adventure happens to take place in the same location as sonic 3s ice cap so
the weird thing about me is that i actually enjoy marble zone.
Sonic 1 only doesn't feel like complete trash in comparison when you have the Whitehead version lol. 2 and 3 are both masterpieces but 2's special stages can die.
I genuinely love sonic 1
I agree with you & Knuckles
18:46 You cant get every emerald until at least act 2, or at least that was the case in the original
44:53 his bio in the Sonic 3 manual says otherwise
Actually very recently I just played through sonic and knuckles cuz I felt like it

Bro I love the puns and now truely hate sonic 1 and all of these are true about the classic games it’s fun to know that other feel what I feel about these games
sir your arm has been consumed by the void
It's ok, what do I need that for anyway
Sonic 3 & Knuckles has a save feature, so you don’t have to play it all in one sitting
I played it all in one sitting because I make videos on a schedule. I didn't say you HAD to play it in one sitting.
@@Garrulous64 I think in the video you mentioned or implied that you prefer to play Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles separately because it’s a long time to sit through in one sitting. If you prefer them as separate games, I understand that. There are differences in both music and level design depending on if you choose to use the lock on feature or not. I was just pointing out that you don’t HAVE to play it all in one sitting in order to use the lock on feature.
Actually, Sonic & Knuckles as a stand alone game DOESN’T have the save feature, so playing them alone means you have to play that game in one sitting whereas locking it on gives you the ability to save it. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying though
30:09 why did this make me laugh omfg

"Make a Sonic try to kill Sonic three times in one act, and I don't think even robotnik has broken that record."
So you still don't remember the three bosses that you have to fight at the end of launch Base act 2?
Guys! I found out how to beat Marble Zone without being in pain! Just press up, down, left, and right on the title screen then hold A and press start. Then, release A and scroll down to Spring Yard Zone act 1 and press start
wouldn't it actually be really cool if he reviewed the FNaF series
Ah sonic 2 it gives me terror
Rest In Peace tails
Honestly... if they only switched up Green Hill Zone like they do Wispy Woods it be fine like Dusty Green(The Green Hill Zone) in Forces. I mean same concept different game's
ps... Sonic two is okay....
They do, quite a bit. Sonic Advance 1 and 3 have a GHZ, Sonic Adventure 2 has a GHZ level when you A rank everything, heck some games have equivalents that are close enough in theme to GHZ that people have been saying that they are tired of seeing it.
Forces had an interesting take with Green Hill being desert-fide, Neo Green Hill from advance starts off as a beach then turns into the typical Green Hills look by the end and into Act 2.

And knuckles.
Sonic 2 is great. It’s greater emphasis on speed makes it instantly better than Sonic 1. Better zones, music, palette. Emerald Hill is a great zone. It’s just a little too short with a pathetic boss in the end. Chemical Plant is amazing. There’s some stop and wait segments but they aren’t too bad like the slow blocks and spikes in Marble. You can outright skip the infamous water segment either by good timing and speed or by going through the hidden path. The boss, I’ll be honest. No idea what he does. I cheese it. Aquatic Ruin is great fun. The first act I usually speed through but the second I like to pick which path I take. I like both. The top path is fast obviously but the water path can also be very speedy. It’s fun. The boss is cool too. Casino Night is good. Just don’t get sucked into gambling your rings lol. There are some slow moving blocks but nothing bad. The boss is a cool here too. Hill Top is alright. It’s probably the slowest zone with the seesaw and rising lava and the gondola platform things. I don’t hate it but I think this is the zone most like Sonic 1. Mystic Cave is one of the best zones in terms of music and aesthetic. Speed, platforming, secrets, all here. The biggest obstacles are probably those firefly badniks that are invulnerable when lit. I hate the boss those. Never been good at the dodging debris thing. That’s why I elect to go to Hidden Palace. The boss is easier(I know some struggle on figuring out how to attack him at first). The zone is very cool and like the other two water levels you never have to touch the water. Oil Ocean is one of my favorites. I can understand the dislike for Labyrinth. It’s not very Sonic-y in design. But Oil Ocean has so many routes, so much speed, fun platforming! What’s to hate? The seahorse badniks aren’t so bad. They only really get me I the opening of act 2. The boss is cool on a first playthrough but then it becomes a waiting game on later playthroughs unless you have Super Sonic and everyone that isn’t 8 should have him by this point imo(for like Origins and the mobile port). Metropolis is kinda bad. It’s got speed and secrets and fast platforming. All that great Sonic stuff that Sonic 2 has been really good with up to this point and still. But the enemy placement…only zone where enemy placement is an issue for me. I have noticed that sometimes enemies like the green ones don’t have their slicers(that the name?) in the mobile port when you’re the normal character which is good but the crabs are still a pain. Tails can make the starfish trigger sooner if he is with you. All that said, I don’t really hate Metropolis tho I still consider it bad. The reason is because Super Sonic evens things out. The boss is fine. Nothing to say about it. Sky Chase is boring. No matter what you do, you cannot make it go any faster. Wing Fortress is fun. I like that you can skip parts of the level and even if you play through it normally, not too hard. Super Sonic really makes this a breeze because he can jump over everything and got right to the end. The laser boss is ok. Silver/mecha/whatever Sonic is easy. He’s an absolute joke. The Death Egg robot is easy if you aren’t needlessly making it harder for yourself. Just never get behind it and never hit him as he’s marching unless you’re a pro and have precise timing. I’m not a pro so I don’t bother. I just get one free hit in as the robot comes from the ground. Hit him when he stops marching. Hit him twice when he lands. Hit him again after he shoots his arms out. Hit him again when he lands again(for some reason I can’t do it twice). Rinse and repeat. Should take two cycles before he’s down. Not hard and/or tedious if you don’t want it to be. The endings are both great. I know many like the normal ending because Tails saves Sonic and yea it’s more impactful. But I like the Super Sonic one too. The fact Tails even showed up for his friend just in case is still meaningful. The special stages are fun imo. Well, the enhanced versions. The half pipe is simple and mildly challenging. It’s not too hard at all. And with multiple checkpoints and the ability to restart in later versions, there’s no excuse not to have Super Sonic. Even if one isn’t going out of their way to stop at every checkpoint, you should have all emeralds before Oil Ocean at the the latest. Overall Sonic 2 is a great game and like any sequel should, it improves on the foundation that the first game set in every single way.
