Coincidentally, it’s currently Ramadan for us Muslims, so we are having dates daily. Date shakes are popular for us this time of year as well, since you can replenish nutrients after the daily fast is done...but I like the idea of tossing in some coffee!
I may not share the religion, but I honestly admire the dedication to fasting during Ramadan. I grew up Mormon, and fasting every fourth Sunday until dinner was pretty tough! Hoping for the best for you from my pocket of the world to yours
Ah dude I love breaking my fast with some dates and some Laban tastes very refreshing😁
Happy late Ramadan!
@@JeweledRoseStudios so
Wholesome
It helps to soak the dates first, much easier to blend.
Thanks
I can’t be the only one expecting him to make a shake that you’d get on a date. Instead he makes a shake out of dates.
Came here to say that. Wasn’t disappointed
I was so surprised when he took out those dates
Fig newton shake
Not sure if he’s loosing it; or I’m loosing it
Sean C. Mako Why can’t both be true?
Sounds good. It's a date. Shake.
The shake is better than :

Your ice holder has penguins on it and it made me smile on a crappy day. Thank you.
maureen stemmle My parents had that ice holder. I LOL’d.
Doesn't AB collect penguins? Why do I think this?.... Oh God!
Hope your day gets better ✨💕✨
Me too. My Mom had same penguin ice bucket. Matching canister too.
Made this for my family to break our Ramadan fasting tonight! So good. Thanks Alton!
For those of you wondering, “that chocolate liqueur” is cremè de cacao. Also Irish cream would work. Please drink responsibly. There is no pun here. Thank you.
I use Godiva liqueur 🤷🏼♀️
Nope I’m gonna get sh!t faced on this stuff, collect all the house for sale signs in my neighborhood and plant them in the yard of the jackass who like mowing at 7am
How was he able to remember crème de menthe, but not crème de cacao?
@@seanleafgreen234 Just throw a bunch of small rocks into/onto his lawn. Or dog shit
@@seanleafgreen234 The hero we deserve.
After all these years of "I've got 10 ramekins here, organization will set you free!" yeahh when you have a team to wash your dishes for you.. it's satisfying to see him reuse dishes like I always do.
His bottom caption says thanks for washing
I love how everyone nowadays looks like they're about to rob a stagecoach.
😂😂😂😂😂
HIGHWAY MEN!
listen, if you don't walk into walmart looking like you just won a shootout with the sheriff what is even the point
😂
Darn' tootin!
While I immensely look forward to this pandemic being over - I've really enjoyed (and will miss) the pantry raid psa videos.
that banana plate is a UNITASKER!!! Oh wait, plantains.
😂😂😂
Don’t forget sausages and brats!
Also aesthetic for sushi plating or cakes
A french omelette shaped in the edge of the pan too!
Don’t forget zucchini and long eggs

“Leaded”

Same lingo at our house, leaded or unleaded. It's quirky but ok by me
Thanks for you and your wife for helping us thru these times!
Absolutely love this, thank you for making this, and props to the subtle bandana mask
Judging by these comments, you seem to have cultivated an audience with a taste for bad puns. Wonder how that happened...
people devolve mentally after a few months of being trapped in their homes, like when this guy started eating onion dip with a spoon.
@@deathdude42 Yeah, there are layers to this.
He is the Master of bad Puns .... and the master of GREAT buns ...
If you like these puns you should actually watch the show. There are a lot of them. I do love bad puns.
Alton Brown has been the culinary pun king for nigh on 21 years
Thank you for all these fun ideas, You had a great impact on my view of cooking as a child, and its great to see content i appreciate as an adult!
We absolutely LOVE a good date shake. Thank you for sharing this recipe, Alton. Well done. 🧡
You know, I lived in Los Angeles for 8 years and out there, date shakes are really common there. I've never liked them though as while I like dates, I felt that in a shake, they're basically just "sweet" and don't offer much other flavors. This however, with the bitter coffee and cocoa notes? I'm definitely trying this!
@@22maestro Really?? They have a ton of stands along Venice Beach that sell them
Yep, I can confirm the date shake is in LA. El Segundo area.
@@sundarpichai940 Do they make vanilla date shakes? I prefer vanilla.
Go to Lancaster, Palmdale, or Bravo Farms. So yummy!
I make these kind of shakes pretty often but have never used more than 2 dates. 10 seems excessive
I used to make a version of this at the juice bar I worked at. Always tinkered with the add ins, but never thought to add the coffee. Will have to try this at home now.💙💙
My late grandpa would always want to stop off the highway for a date shake in Dateland, AZ ...middle of nowhere, on the way to Yuma from Phoenix-the line was always out the door...amazing! This reminded me of my Grandpa-I miss him for sure.
Thank you, I love these.
we had that exact ice cube holder. Classic with the penguins around it! Nice throwback
Thank you, Alton, for making me smile!
"Thanks for washing." I see what you did there! 😷👍
Hi Alton and Elizabeth! Thank you.
Crem'e de Cacao - Lovely when you put a shot in a cup of hot cocoa. Chases the chills away.
I've been making shakes & smoothies to get me through the hot days before I can get someone to come fix my ac. I've also been putting some veg in mine, especially spinach and/or broccoli, and it's visually obvious but not ...gustatorally? evident.
I like using dairy in my stuff, bc I need more calcium and also it's typically cheaper, but I don't like it half- curdling if I aalso want to use juice. So I've been adding some baking soda to neutralize that acid. That effect works best when I add three baking soda to the juice and let it react before adding it to the blender... but when I added the baking soda directly to the blender, and it didn't really mix with the juice until everything else did too, I got a mildly carbonated shake. Nothing near as much as soda, but it was lighter & fluffier, even after hours of being in the freezer, at which point it was about ice cream consistency.
I don't measure when I add stuff, and I'm not consistent, so I can't tell you how much baking soda is best... it's more than a pinch and less than an ounce, that'd all I know for sure. (I know 1oz is A LOT of baking soda lmao)
Guess my next trip to the store is to get dates, cocoa, and almond milk.
I’ve made this shake, it’s worth it.
ohhh, you have a bun warmer like my grandmother had! Thank you for taking me back to my childhood.
Love these short vids. I hope there will be more to come
Thank you for this, Alton! Finally had a chance to make this today. Loved it. I substituted chai for coffee because coffee upsets my stomach, and used half of the dates and half of a banana. It was plenty sweet. 👍🏼
Made this tonight. Fantastic!! Thank you!
Just throw in some Kahlua or Tia Maria and call it a breakfast smoothie. No one’s driving anywhere.
Working from home is awesome because there's no one to stop be from having an irish coffee or three for breakfast.
I would add a little vanilla, I find it enhances chocolate. And if you want flavored chocolate, I sometimes add 1 drop of peppermint oil, or a couple of drops of orange oil. Almond extract works too.
He added a pinch of salt.
but yes to the vanilla.
Edited, true, he did, should have known Alton wouldn't forget salt.
LOVE this recipe! I have fond memories when parents would drive us to Palm Springs and their Date Shakes were such a treat!
I'll be adding this date to my calendar...
Alton Brown and Master Chef John have taught me for the last 20 years via television and internet.
Chef John taught me amazing tricks I used for years
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117(protagonist from halo), I was lost for second, had to google.
Thank you for making Tuesday my favorite day !
Looks and sounds so good!!!
Got stuff together for this for myself I have to make the ice cubes, it hit 90 degrees today and the power went out for an hour. Tomorrow will drop off stuff to my daughter due to COVID19 and come home and make some of this just for me. Thank you, Alton. May was such a month and June will be better with a pitcher of this! Been enjoying you and your wife Elizabeth on Quarantine Quitchen, very much.
I've made this twice already
i really enjoyed the recipe and recommend more videos like this....(blender/smoothie type stuff
Thanks a lot AB,what a good coincidence,
It's a very good iftar idea and as a way to use up any excess dates(since Ramadhan is nearly over).😊😊
Usually these dates just dried up in my fridge after Ramadhan and then thrown away..
Love you Alton for years! Nice to see you again! I had my smart phone volume up to max and I still had trouble hearing you. Check your sound system.👍❤😊
I was in the Tulare area years ago for the farm equipment expo and found a place that served date milkshakes , on a place that grew hundreds of acres of dates and thousands of dairy cows. It was awesome.
This looks really great! I’d love to try this out
Actual date shakes (date sugar, vanilla ice cream and milk) are perfection. Back when gas was cheap, I'd drive 140 miles to Indio, CA (near Palm Springs) for one: Shields Date Garden. Enjoy.
Just made this with leftover pour over coffee I learned how to do from another AB video (thanks, Alton!). It. Was. Delicious! I had it for breakfast lol. I substituted Eden Soy soy milk for the protein and because all store bought almond milk has calcium carbonate which blocks thyroid medicine. It’s so good and so easy. Thanks, Alton!!!
Alton Brown,
You are my hero! I love watching you on UA-cam, without all the chains television tries to tie you down with! Elizabeth will be proud of you for drinking this healthier beverage! I am SO looking forward to Tuesday! Woohoo! ❤💜💚💙🌈💙💚💜❤
me too! finally got that pizza we've been waiting for! along with kale, it was a wild ride!
Fyi, dates are crazy high in sugar. One date is about 4-5g of sugar. So the dates alone would make that shake about 2x the recommended daily sugar intake (25g for women, 35g for men). Just make this for a special treat, but don’t fool yourself into thinking this won’t make you gain weight lol.
Créme de Cacao is what you’re thinking of 😉 Gotta try this one!
I’ll have to write this down (sounds delish!) then covert measures into something I can recognize. Looking forward to it. Thanks 😊
Thanks for lifting my spirits Alton👍👌🆗😷
I can appreciate that sound balancing
Elizabeth would have insisted you put kale in it.
Or turmeric!
Needs more dulse. 😄
Just made the shake and it is delicious!!! Thank you
Thank u Mr. Alton
Your so fun to watch!🤣🤣 love it!😂
Simple, Love it!
Ha! I haven’t seen an ice keeper like that since 1970-something! Way cool!
Very interesting. Thank you for this.
This recipe is awesome I can't wait to try this recipe myself Alton you keep making these videos and I love you forever
Same. Looks delicious by my standards
Riverside County California thanks you for promoting one of our finest exports to the nation - the date!
Dairy free recipes make my life so much better. Thank you.
Tell Elizabeth that my wife and I love her ‘Plague it Again Sam’ playlist on Spotify. Seems we’re of similar vintage. Our Boston terrier is also a fan. Love your shows as well and they’re getting us through this whole mess. Thanks
I have the date plate (Metlox California Freeform) and, of course, the banana plate (starburst crescent salad plate). But I only have a blendtec.
Alton, I have a ice container just like this one! Only mine is probably older than you and me put together. It was my mother's and i don't remember a time it wasn't out for company. M it y mother used it for her homemade yeast rolls, as well.
I just made this shake and it’s amazing! ❤️❤️
I've used Creo brew instead of coffee in this shake recipe for very personal reasons. Follow the instructions of blending the dates with the bananas and milk until smooth first, I learned this part the hard way with many chunky smoothies.
OMG! I didn't know Alton Brown had a UA-cam!! My life is complete. Love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I have finally found a recipe including dates that I would love!
This is just awesomeness!!!!
I finally got a chance to make this. It's blissfully good.
Hey!! I love your energy. Subscribed!
A date shake never looked so good! Great video!
I grew up in LA and was drinking date shakes with my "Health nut" aunt at a "health Food store" when they were a brand new thing. I was probably 10 years old. Loved them but I really LOVED the carrot shakes the most. YUMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!
Oh my goodness! Your penguin ice bucket instantly unlocked childhood memories! My mom had one of these in the 70’s and 80’s that she used whenever she would make cocktail wieners or meatballs and take them to a party. She always used it for hot foods so it did not occur to me that it was actually an ice bucket. Yeah, ok, the penguins should have been a giveaway, duh. Had to move Mom to a nursing home because the dementia has advanced so far. So it is really cool when something like that pops up to remind me of the good old days!
OMG...My parents have that exact same ice bucket!! Love it!!!
you're gonna tell us that the blender might not blend the dates well at high speed. that's a vitamix. it'll blend an iphone
Ah yes, the forbidden Apple smoothie.
You should always blend everything at the lowest speed it will blend, you don't accomplish anything by just spraying everything all over the inside of the blender and not actually chopping things up.
whoa, iphone dust, don't breath this in.
@@darkmagician1184 tell that to the chinese kids in the iphone factory.
Hahahaha glad I'm not the only one who holds the top of their vitamix lid as if the carafe is going to take off! Lol!
ME AND MY LACTOSE INTOLERANT SOUL THANK YOU ALTON.... BLESS YOU KIND SIR.
Yeah baby! I'm thinking a little shot of really dark rum would help this out as well. I'm going out to forage for dates (Medjool for sure). Thanks, AB.
EVERY time I'm scrolling, I gatta read "pantry" raid twice!
😳 every time
Flashbacks to that one spongebob episode 😳
Pany or pantry?
Please! Please! Please continue this series after this health crisis is over! I enjoy it so very much!
Mr Brown, what a magnificent looking drink!!! 👀👀
I'm sure it's super yummy! 😋😋 Thank you! 👌
But I think I'd use full cream milk and add some creme de cacao...... 😉👍
0:05 that is why we love you Alton.
I made this the other night and it was delish! I don’t like coffee (gasp!), so I used Dandy Blend in place of the coffee. I will be making this again.
Haven't had a date shake since I went to Shields outside Palm Springs. Supposed to be a pretty old date shake place. Next time you're there check it out.
Takes me back to Coachella 2011, immediately thought of Shields when I saw this video!
Ramadan Vibes! I love Alton Brown!
Thank you for this recipe. Research suggests eating 6 dates a day in the weeks leading up to delivery reduces the length of labor for pregnant women. It's nice to have some options for consuming that many dates each day. Thanks!
I may try but may subtract dates bc high sugar and add more coffee cubes (coffee ice cubes) and substitute something out for the banana (allergic).
That sounds delicious. I mean incredible.
Alton Brown's Date Shake Recipe
In a blender combine:
10 medjool dates, pitted
1 frozen banana
5 g dutch cocoa powder
1 pinch salt
Blend in blender on medium for about 1 minute, turn up to high 20 sec, add in:
150 mg chilled coffee
250 g ice
Optional add-ins:
liquer/alcohol
High speed 15 sec, serve and enjoy!
“A pinch of salt because… salt.” Flawless explanation as always
That looks delicious 💖
Ah Alton! Such a beautifully talented human being 😃
I love that you have a penguin. Those are a right of passage in our family and mandatory for family reunion dishes
If you don't have a strong blender, you can soak the pitted dates in boiling hot water for about 10 mins to soften them before using an immersion blender + beaker.
Sound great
👏! Love it! Looks yummy.
