Hello, I'm Matt Jasa. If you are interested in learning about Glass blowing or Lamp working my channel offers a lot of advice on the techniques, tools, and general safety. Make Artistic pieces (animals, marbles, pendants), scientific items, and blown functional glass. Put your mind to it and with practice you can make anything!
Some more specific projects you might find on this channel are Glass Chain Necklaces, Glass Pendants, Marbles, Magnifying Glasses, Glass on Glass Fittings ( GonG ) and Blown Spheres. I also use small explosives from time to time for scientific tests; however these eplosive projects should never be attempted at home, safety is my highest precaution! Never attempt glass blowing without proper ventilation and eye protection.
Check out my videos on setting up your glass blowing torch along with how to adjust for the right flames; such as neutral, oxidizing and reducing flame before you begin. Learn how to cut, clean and prepare your glass for future projects.
Never store your propane in-doors, Always keep propane tanks outside! Propane gas is heavier then air, if a leak occurs it will begin to pool and fill a closed room or basement which can lead to an explosion.

I love making small reamers from brass and polishing them up shiny. I'm going to start casting brass so I can make bigger brass reamers and other tools
You do such interesting things. And, I really like the dice from last week. The windows make it look so 3D.

Surely you could ziptoe a vacuum head to that clamp to suck up any potentially harm dust?
Hey Josh, you surely could. I've attached a small shop vac to an electric grinder at one point, It still got pretty messy. It's like very hard chalk, it rubs off on your hands as you handle it.
a trick to making pushes and reams out of graphite chuck it into a drill and use the drill to spin it against sandpaper
Some materials I've spun in a drill against a grinder, likely not necessary for softer materials like graphite.
I'm still looking around the web and avoiding skynet but I wanted to pop in and say that you do great tutorials!
I was hoping to dive in but I'm finding it difficult to find a good beginners torch other than the... Hot point that comes with standard small containers. Blah.
I think I'll look for some groups near me on the book of faces and see what knowledge I can earn...
Thank you; sharing my knowledge is what's most important! Lampworking takes a lot of time, practice, and money but its dedication to understanding the art-form that makes the most difference.
I recommend the Bethlehem Alpha and the GTT Bobcat or a similar Oxygen+Fuel torch. You'll want the added Oxygen especially if your melting Borosilicate.

How is the standard taper for g.o.g. ground joints, 1:10? Does that mean that a taper 20mm long and 10mm at tip 12mm at 20mm?

@@Spence4420 I'll have to do that, I know I haven't talked a lot about the kiln yet. Ramp up should be the rate that the temperature will climb in an Hour. Hold will be how long to keep it at the target temperature.
So for example:
Ramp 350, Hold 1050 for 30 minutes. (it will take 3 hours to reach 1050f* and will hold it there for 30 minutes.) Then Ramp 150, hold 900 for 15 minutes. (It will cool down from 1050 to 900 over an hour and hold it at 900 for 15 minutes before shutting off.)
Ramp Full, Hold 1050 for 30 minutes. Means the kiln heats up as fast as possible to 1050 and holds it for 30 minutes.
What temperature depends on the type of class (or clay) and how slow to ramp it depends on how thick the glass is.
I appreciate how Matt addresses the laymen without over explaining. Some peeps vids would tell us how to tye our velcro shoes and plug the kiln into the wall, explaining the breaker box and its operation b4 getting to the "ramp up", by then losing ,sadly only, 65percent of the original veiwers, thnx Jasa lol

I've never used a Cheetah, I would imagine it would do up to 38mm tubing. It looks like a cool torch the only thing that might hold me back is not having a smaller center fire. If your doing connections/welds having a small center fire helps.

Hey Matt I BOUGHT SOME GLASS TUBES FROM A NEON SIGN MAKER. The tubes are clear. However when I put the torch to it and close the end to blow a herb bowl; the glass turns dark gray with a metallic shine to every place I used the torch. Is that safe to smoke out of? why would it change color like that? I have not added anything to it
It sounds like there is something inside of the tube. If you wash them with isopropyl alcohol try water instead as left over isopropyl might cause weird effects. I don't make pipes, but from a scientific view that might be dangerous as heavy metals are toxic to the body.

Like for projecting darts? I haven't seen one, but it shouldn't be that difficult to make. I might have to try it. Thanks Drew for the suggestion.

@@feral7094 Hello FeralGore, are you asking about how to make glass blowtubes or glass tubing in general?
We craft the glass blowtubes from glass tubes fairly easily on the torch before we start our project. They shorten with use so eventually you'll want to re-purpose them for another project and use a new tube. Its good to buy your tubes in bulk (crates): 50 tubes at a time.

The copper clad graphites, appear to be arc gouging rods from a welding store, I didn't realize they where available up to a 1/2".
Where is a good source for blank rod and plates? Trying to get started is expensive:/ lol

Hey, I need to pick ur brain for just a sec. This past week I perchased a 20lb box of miscellaneous graphite off ebay :) I purchased it to do exactly what your doing with it, making my own tools, molds, texture blocks, and so on. But of course graphite gets everywhere! Just from opening the box my hands were completely covered in black soot! I've also purchased graphite rods from abrimagery.com and they do not turn my hands black. So I'm guessing they have some kind of coating on them? Maybe liquid graphite? If not do u know what is used on them? And if it isn't a coating what do they do? Can u please shed some light on this subject for me. It will be much appriciated! :)
That's a good question, but I'm not entirely sure. It might be a composite of materials like graphite + clay in certain ratios. Overall be careful not to be breathing in the graphite dust. It's not as harmful as glass dust but over time it can be bad for the lungs as well. I suggest a mask, gloves and sanding by hand. Also I do recommend the Jacks tool, those are normally stainless steel mine were $60.
@@MattJasa Good point about the mask, I always try to wear one when making frit but besides that I dont think about it too often. Thanks for ur help tho, I think I'm going to go ahead and order the liquid graphite to play around with, couldn't hurt. But Im also wondering if maybe its a heat thing. Like maybe after shaping the tools they get placed in an oven/kiln for so long at a certain temp. I also agree with u about the jacks. I couldn't imagine having to work without them and $60 isn't bad at all for a good pair 👍Have u ever been on ABRimagery.com ? If not u should really check them out! U talk about mountainglass.com on here a lot, I like them also but more so for tools and torches. ABR seems to have way better prices for glass. Plus they are the only appoved vendors for boro batch, one of my tab glass companies. And they offer way more experimental/small batch colors, stuff that no one else has or ever will. P.S. I know u work with a lot of tubing and most 9mm chinese colored tubing is only $1.50 for a 4ft tube and the 12mm is only $2.40 for a 4ft tube👍 I love it❤ It made it possible for me to do, and learn, and experiment a lot more as a beginning glass blower!

@@Spence4420 Great suggestions. I might attempt the Eagle globe and anchor first. I don't wanna rush it though, important iconic pieces like that shouldn't look sloppy.

Why graphite?
That's a good question. Because of its physical properties it handles the heat without bonding or sticking to the glass. Other metals also work, but can bond to the glass once they heat up. It's also soft and easy to grind into what shape you need. You have to be careful, as the whole rod will warm up with use, so creating a handle from another material will help limit that thermal transfer.
