  • Ulgham is pronounced "Uffham".
Date filmed: Tuesday the 14th of May 2024
    Videos filmed at: 13:13 | 13:20
Route: East Coast Main Line (ECML)
    - Between Pegswood (PEG) and Widdrington (WDD) Stations
Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV)
Filming location: Ulgham Lane, Longhirst (NE61 3NF)
A Cross Country Voyager and an intermodal freight train both heading south can be seen rushing past this rural crossing on quiet country lane near the villages of Longhirst and Ulgham next to a tight road bend. Like a handful of others on this part of the busy, high-speed East Coast Main Line, this crossing lacks any barrier skirt despite being a full barrier crossing, likely a localised adaptation as it sees very sparse pedestrian usage, so there's not a lot to prevent clambering under them here. One set of wigwag lights is further forward from the crossing to be seen coming up the road and is partly in a bush, and it can also be noted that despite it being in the middle of the day, the alarms were in their 'night mode' setting and were much quieter than expected. This was the case at a number of these level crossings.
