  • Toyota's oldest nameplate returns to the US with an all new shape, blending the shape of a sedan with the high seating position of an SUV. We're looking forward to hitting the road later this year to put it and the new 340-horsepower Hybrid Max powertrain to the test.

I think the move to fully electric vehicles is creating a niche for this one. A lot of people don’t like sitting low in sedans. Plus a fully electric car requires people to make changes to their home electrical system or hunt for chargers that (at least in the United States) are not always available or even working. The hybrid system eliminates charging issues altogether and, if traffic is slow enough, you can drive on all electric which greatly reduces the need to look for a gas station. And then there’s a significant number of people who just want to drive the car rather than have to learn it like their first smart phone.

Toyota has called this a “crossover” at the world premiere presentation. There are 3 other iterations coming, but maybe not to the US: Sport, Sedan, & Estate.

Fantastic! Given America's lack of plug-in ecosystem I can see why they elected to do the hybrid only. For mass production I think it's the more efficient choice for several years... Great car I hope they bring the sedan to America!

It never ceases to amaze me how Toyota can design and make a nice-looking car and then crap all over it... that awful-looking decorative black cladding on the side just destroys the looks of a potentially beautiful automobile... they did the same thing to the BZ4X with all that black cladding around the wheels wells.

@Senna_Grillo12 Toyota has many interesting names.... let's not forget the Carina and Celica names....they were legendary in their glorious days.... Honestly, I don't know the name Cressida would replace if it's brought back to life.... the Corolla and Camry are popular in their own right.... the Avalon got axed because Toyota lost focus on it... just the current line up of Toyota models here in the USA is already crowded enough... Yaris, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Camry, Venza, Highlander, Highlander hybrid, 4Runner, RAV4, RAV4 hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Prius line up, etc.... maybe Toyota can bring the Avalon back as a pure 3 rows of seats station wagon like those American wagons of the 60s and 70s. We will get the Crown wagon and crossover versions, so maybe the Avalon can come back as a luxury model above the Crown, the highest model right before buyers crosd into the luxury Lexus brand

@@Aikynbreusov I doubt old names like Celica and Cressida will ever come back, too old fashioned, Avalon was never able to stand out on its own, station wagon ideas like Ford Flex failed because no one wanted to buy them and doesn't fit with the current market offerings available

Gotta love that disclaimer... the only thing that will vary on the production model is likely to be the color scheme and maybe those wheel arch garnishes. This is smart because the reality is that the EV charging infrastructure is still lagging dramatically - I think those automakers that are committing to EVs while ignoring hybrids are going to regret that decision. I would absolutely consider the Crown as my next new car, which is almost certainly going to be a hybrid.

I have found for a while that in so many sedans, you just sit way too low. A perfect example is the latest Toyota Prius. I keep my vehicles for a long time - 10 years plus - and it would be nice to find a comfortable, easy to enter/exit, great fuel economy vehicle. What sucks is if I like this vehicle, that I just know I will have to either pay the premium that the dealership will demand, or wait a year or two to find one at sticker price - these times of inflated vehicle prices needs to end!

I guess I’m the only one that thinks it looks horrible. No graceful lines, and the Corolla looking grill on steroids looks horrible and cheap. With the top of the line hitting $60,000, and an interior materials appropriate only on a $30,000, has my head scratching who would buy this?

Stop trying to sugarcoat it. It’s not weird, it’s a disaster. Ugly doesn’t even come close to describe this thing.
