Good friend of mine is INTP, and we met in our first year of college studying chemistry. You nailed it by saying that INTPs are much more detail oriented and interested in theory. As INTJ, I couldn't keep up with his interest in theory. My friend on the other hand dispised practical lab work which I enjoyed. He therefore left chemistry and started in physics. He is now professor in theoretical physics focusing on one specific area, whereas I made a career in experimental chemistry in several areas. Also he is always going for stepwise finding of solutions whereas I seem to be more visionary and less hang up on single steps to get there. We both are scientists but our approach and interest in science disciplines are different.
Interesting to hear you classifying it as a "problem" or a "hurdle" to focus on understanding more than emotion in human relating. As and INTP, I am very aware that humans are not like computers, because thinking so would be to not understand them. However, this notion that Einstein was "wrong" to focus on understanding rather than emotions with humans, even if it was at times awkward, is also not understanding humans. For example, I know that my wife will at times try to put emotion before understanding. I also know that this is a mistake that she is making. Both understanding and emotion are essential, but this itself is a key understanding! So when I encourage her to understand _rather than_ simply emote, this is not a problem or wrong... it is intentional and, even when the result is temporarily not harmonious, the longer term result has been her focusing more on understanding and therefore more harmony. I am far from perfect, of course, and myself lack understanding... including on what is and is not understanding and the ideal balance between reason and emotion. The example above is to illustrate how understanding is the unavoidable basis of harmony, while emotion plays a key, but ultimately secondary, role. Therefore, while I agree that the INTP can be socially awkward, the extent to which this is harmful or helpful will take a lot of understanding to judge.
I think that one way INTP and INTJ (me) are alike is that neither is well connected to feelings so they use intuition to help them navigate the world of emotions. When having an emotional talk with someone who is more of a feeler, I don't know to interact with them using my emotions. So instead I try to understand what they are saying, get to the root of their emotional problem. Then I let my intuition supply me with the a proper and helpful response. Is that how you see it?
INTJs are generally regarded as cold and robotic. Definately not warm and fuzzy types. From what I have learned about INTJ's functional stack is that Fi (introverted feeling) in the tertiary (third) position makes feeling 1) inwardly directed and 2) farther from our conscious. Emotional is not our 'go to' state. Much more comfortable in the rational, logical state of mind. We have emotions, very deep ones, but they are kept under tight wraps most of the time. Suppressing them comes naturally. The face we show to the world is stoic, cool and aloof. I'm pretty sure that my feeling coworkers think I am unfeeling and maybe a little harsh.
Hey. I am an INTJ. I am sensitive and can process emotions. I do agree that my feeling function is at the third position in my stack. But, that does not mean I can't use it. It's just not my go-to way. If I absolutely like someone (provided that he/she is a feeler), I'll definitely use it {even more than my thinking process}.
INTPs, and by proxy ISTPs, are generally a lot more emotionally volatile than INTJs. INTJs seem to be "seething" more than INTPs, who just occasionally outburst, for better or worse.

There are some things I don't quite understand about cognitive functions. One of those is the following: Se is always related to engaging in physical activities and being aware of the immediate physical world. But me, as an INTP when driving my car I need to be aware of it too. Does that mean that I'm using Se when driving? When I'm doing a route that I do everyday, it becomes automatic, so I don't have to think about it, but when I drive to somewhere I don't know I have to be far more aware of everything, are there differences in the cognitive functions that I use in both this cases? Like Si for a known path and Se for a new one? Would other cognitive funcions be at play? Because when I'm driving at the same time I'm thinking about something else. Am I using two cognitive functions at the same time? And this brings me to these questions: Are we using one cognitive funcions at a time and then flip to the other or are we using two or more at the same time? How much time do we use one before changing to the other? Can every thought and action we do be attributed to one cognitive function? Or at least to a combination of two cognitive functions?
I'm INTP. You will still have access to all of the other functions if seriously needed but may be clumsy when using them because of development. Usually you will default to your typical stack when doing other things. So yes you will use SE when driving.
