I'm from an Ashkenazi Jewish background and me, my mum and my sister have just tested positive for BRCA2 mutation. It's good to know, you basically have the chance of beating cancer before you even get it if you get the test. I would highly recommend getting the test if you have Ashkenazi descent, or any other of the high risk groups.
Having a BRCA 1 or 2 mutation also does NOT mean you will DEFINITELY get cancer either, it just means you have an increased risk. Having the mutation entitles you to more frequent screening as a first line. I haven't decided yet if I will eventually opt for a mastectomy. My situation is complicated by other factors, so I am not sure what decisions I will make yet.
The one that worries me the most is pancreatic cancer. There has been more than one instance of pancreatic cancer in my family. Diabetes also runs in my family as well.
Be aware of your body and what is normal for you, if you notice any changes in your breasts, periods, like bleeding between your cycles, or develop any symptoms in your abdomen, go and get it checked out. It's likely not to be cancer, but you can mitigate the risk by getting it checked out early. Most cancers caught very early can be successfully treated. However the pancreatic one is much harder to detect, and is usually detected when it is advanced. There is also no screening program available for this one.
If you smoke, stop. Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for pancreatic cancer. My dad died from what we think was pancreatic cancer, and he smoked all of his life. He wasn't of Jewish descent, and we will never know if he too carried a faulty gene because when he died in 1991, this kind of genetic testing wasn't done on a routine basis. Thankfully none of us three smoke, and I am teetotal.

This information is very helpful. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer a couple weeks ago. I had genetic tests done and they found I had a defective BRCA2 gene.

It's a 50/50 chance, even if one or both parents test positive, there is still a 50/50 chance of the children also carrying the mutation. One sibling might be positive, and the other might not. I'd get the other kids tested as well, as they all have the 50/50 chance. Some of my other family members have also been tested, and their relatives/children have been both positive in some and negative in others.
Me, my mum and my sister have all tested positive, however it's very possible other close family will be clear.
