Perfect solution to what I was looking for to control the temp in a freezer set up. Appreciate that tip. I'm getting ready to set up one myself soon. Keep Crushing It!! Stay HUMBLE, Stay HUNGRY, Stay FOCUSED...~The Jarhead Entrepreneur
Great idea!! I saw someone make one of these on Instagram. I used to have a 75 gallon tank in my garage. I would have major fish kill for the water temp getting too high in the middle of summer.. this is def the way to go
You're gonna love the Inkbird. I've had mine for 3 years now, work awesome. My set-up is, basically the same as yours, except that I used an old cooler as a canister filter, no "sweating" at all. I have an extra 50 g. drum that I keep beside the main tank. Since I have to use city water, I let it sit there for a few day, than do about 1/3 water change every week. It works great for about, 20 to 30 doz. of chubs or fatheads.PS. I also leave an opening, about 6" wide on my lid to let the ammonia evaporate. Once the water's cooled, the freezer only kicks-on twice a day. I keep my water between 54 & 57 degrees....keeps bait alive for 4 to 6 weeks, without hardly any casualties....:-)
Great video MTW! I live on the west side of Lake Eustis in central FL, so loved the shirt, too. Looking to upgrade my 20 gal cooler tank and will probably go with similar freezer with a K1 moving filter(very similar to your design). Thanks for all the great info, Mainiad
Nice tank I live in mass and been trying for years to trap shiners with no luck. Can you give me any suggestions on what you do to catch bait Thanks Rick
Hello there......Awesome video. I looked at comments and very close to my build.....Can you please tell me what kind of freezer and more did you have to do extra sealing inside. Thanks. Tight Lines.
Hello. I build my tank per your instructions and it works great. The problem I'm having is the freezer gets extremely warm/hot when it turns on and cools the water. This happens even when trying to cool a couple degrees. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Does your freezer cool the water quickly and does it get hot? I think my chest freezer could be broken. I tried it with no water and it got cold fast. Please let me know. I really appreciate the video and it's been a fun project.
aj marksberry it takes a while for it to cool the water down to temp so it will run and get hot heat. Once it’s at temp it doesn’t run much. Hardly at all actually. Get the digital thermostat thst I recommend in the description. It helps maintain the exact temp.
Just set my tank up. My freezer gets hot to the touch also.... Kind of freaked me out. Hopefully it doesn’t stay that warm once the temp gets down some. I have an inkbird. But like I said I just filled the freezer with water today.
Perfect.. I just subbed.. found your channel searching for camo paint ideas.. I had my bait tank filter almost the same with a series of filters. Like the temp probe.. did the same with a timer and had the same issues with ice issues.. i'm planning on hitting the hard water tomorrow.. let's fish. !
I'll throw ot the if you can get a deal on plexi or some plastic make deviders. Then you can hold different bait at one time. Shiners, fat heads, and suckers at the same time and you won't have to weed through them.
I made your bate tank and am enjoying having minnows on my time frame. I did use lava rock in my filter system instead of scribes ..where did you find the blue filter . I used floor buffer pads looking for the softer material
How many bait do you think you keep in there? 10 dozen more or less? Also do you keep trapping thru the season or get them all before and keep them through the season? Thanks for a great video!
I started one bout a week ago almost identical to your's except for the scrubbie I used lava rock . Currently have a pound of tuffies and 6 dozen shiners in it now so far just too dead
Going to be doing almost exactly what you have set up but how do you drain it when you do water changes or during when you are not using it? Just siphon it out? Thanks!
Calvin mire that freezer type bait holder you made with that freezer will that also work for perch bluegill shadLet me know something if you don’t mind God bless you have a good night and thanks
what temperature do you recommend? also do you use well water? My boyfriend and I built a similar tank out of our chest freezer however we've been having issues keeping them alive. We use a filter system we bought from Walmart for a 60+ gallon tank. We also have two bubblers set up inside. Filled it up with creek water. We have been giving them fish food. And we have no temp monitor. Just keep it in our garage open with a screen on top. Do you know what could be causing them to die??
Extremely, well narrated tutorial. Really appreciate your time taken, and thank you for sharing the knowledge!

Rock LaRoche I love it. Ive had it running for a little over 3 months and I’ve only lost 2 fish. Keep it at around 40-45
Right on! They sure are great lil'gizmos. Awesome video btw....very informative.
Rock LaRoche do you feed your fish
Sorry for the late reply. No! Never feed my fish. They'll last for weeks, if the water conditions are right.

I got it from Home Depot I think. Can’t remember the brand. I just added some silicon to the seams
Nice bait tank!

This is very much like a trickling filter used in wastewater treatment plants

Seems like some good information thanks
Cool idea great vudeo n is that fresh or salt water bait tank
Will the galvanized inside kill the minnows? 😊
Better bait works well.. I have used it for a while..
Amazing
I started one bout a week ago almost identical to your's except for the scrubbie I used lava rock . Currently have a pound of tuffies and 6 dozen shiners in it now so far just too dead
Almost wish it was bigger for $20.00 a pound in Alabama I could get in a lot of late night crappie fishing after midnight work
That freezer ever leak on you? Did you silicone the seams?
What do you feed the fish? I plan on trying your creation out for creek chubs. I'd like to catch bigger ones for flathead catfishing.
Nothing, it just messes with the water quality. I only keep them a few months though
Going to be doing almost exactly what you have set up but how do you drain it when you do water changes or during when you are not using it? Just siphon it out? Thanks!
Chris Faust I don’t glue the pump hose to the bucket so I can pop it off and hook a garden hose to it and run it out my door to the yard
GREAT VID THANKS ***** FROM YOUR NEW SUB
Calvin mire that freezer type bait holder you made with that freezer will that also work for perch bluegill shadLet me know something if you don’t mind God bless you have a good night and thanks
Calvin Mire I would assume so. I don’t think maine allows us to keep those fish as bait or “pets” so I wouldn’t really know.

Don’t feed them. That’s most likely your problem and the filter can’t keep up. I run mine at about 42 degrees
Can you keep X amount of catfish or crappies in a bigger fridge 🤔
Ok so my one question is the return water is gravity fed right. I am looking to building the pump I already have the tank.
Yes
How big is the freezer that you are using?
what would be the max water temp i could have with shiners and creek chubs before i would have to refrigerate the water?
Probably 60s
Holyshit that's a lot to go through for bait. I have half the parts and keep my bait no problem you need a PhD to make that system
What pushes the water into the outgoing pipe back into to the tank? Just gravity siphoned?
Yes
Cool setup!
What is the fitting you used to go into put to hook up pvc? I thought it was pipe thread but its not do you have any idea?
Yeah it was a threaded adaptor/reducer end that fit the pump
Do you leave your Tank on 24/7?
Nice video! Thank you for sharing. How many 4" shiners do you think you can keep in your tank?
So you used regular tap water?
I have a well… but yes
Have you had any trouble with the InkBird yet? Ive heard the temp probes can fail if you don't use a thermal well. Any thoughts?
Kenneth Miller it’s worked for 2 seasons so far. No issues
Thanks!
What size is your pvc coming off your pump
Never mind I just had to watch longer... thank you
Did you see any benefit of Better Bait?
Tim Sandstrom can’t say either way but it didn’t hurt I guess.
You said you don't feed them? Ever???
What pump is that you have?
Brandon Modlin should be linked in the description
Maine Trout Whisperer how often do you clean your filters?
Brandon Modlin just at the end of the season when I shut it down and clean it out. It finds for about 4.5 months
