Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial, worked really well! The torque spec for handle bar pin bolt of the old slot & cone system is 16 Nm, and for the new wedge style system (coloured bolt head) 30 Nm as per Brompton's own manual.
thank a lot for the video. i was checking internet because i am stucked at step 3 (now i know i just have to use a bigger hammer 😉 no hidden lock or whatever) Note at step 17 : 2 wrenchs are not needed, because of the washer locked in rotation btw both nuts. but this « split » washer is not allways existing or installed (depending of bike model and brand)
Best Brompton headset video. Thank you. I'm living in the San Francisco Bay area. Bike shops here are charging $225-$400 to disassemble and reassemble my Brompton. Why? I'm going to paint my frame & I'll take it apart myself. I spent last year in Mexico where bike shops had never seen a Brompton but they could take it apart in 15 min and put it back for 25. In May I visited Cuba for a month. There is not one bicycle shop (or motorcycle or car shop) in the whole country yet the mechanics there had no problem taking apart & reassembling my Brompton. So thanks for the instructional video. Very clear & precise.
So is there any problem raising the stem 1 inch or .5 inches. It looks safe to me sense the fork comes all the way up that way i could get a little bar highth
You might have some room to gain there, the limiting factor is the folded position as the bars would hit the ground if raised too high. It can always be adjusted back if it doesn't work
In my opinion, one would only need to replace the headset if the bearings of bearing races become damaged or worn. This could appear as a gritty and or loose feel in the steering. Diagnoses could include disassembly of the headset and examination of the bearings and races. Rust, pitting, deep scratches in the races; or broken bearings would indicate need to replace components. Headset, I find, are extremely durable and can last the life of the bike if maintained. Meaning kept properly tightened, greased, and the bike isn't stored outside.
@@HooptieDoodle thanks a lot! My Brompton is 2 year old now but steering seems firm still. But I will use the video as a guide to open it next month and check if needs some love. Have a good one!

Hi, I would like to know which the correct torque wrench value to use for mounting the headset nut with 36 mm
So is there any problem raising the stem 1 inch or .5 inches. It looks safe to me sense the fork comes all the way up that way i could get a little bar highth

What's the indication that you need to do the headset replacement? Do you need to do it like once a year? Cheers!
