Really enjoyed this. The inside of a Sturmey Archer hub had been a total mystery to me ever since I had a Hercules Viscount as a child.
Just 2-weeks into Brompton Bike-riding: and this explains all the different gear & ticking hub noises. I was thinking that it was the pedal powered front and back lights that were adding extra noise. But it turns out it just sounds different from my other bikes. Thanks for making this so clear for beginners.
So glad it helped and thank you so much for letting us know and for watching!
Great vlog always wondered what the inside of the hub looked like, thanks to you I now know.
Great video, thank you. We dismantled our hubs recently as we figured a regreasing was in order. We got it all back together without to much Hassle. Fascinating but a little bit scary!
The ticking noise is quintessential Brompton signature. Nice explanation.
Just BRILLIANT...of course! I find my tick reassuringly pleasing and wouldn’t want to stop it even if I could 😁 Fascinating to see the inner shenanigans of the hub, but don’t think I’d ever want to go there 😬😂 Thanks and Stay Safe 🤗
lovely, you make it looks so easy to take the hub apart.
Very creative on your videos. If there were really two identical you it would be a dream come true. Thanks . Be safe
Wow you ladies are impressive! I loved your video! My Brompton is in for its first service. Missing it terribly 🚴🏼♂️
Thanks so much! We're sure you will have it back first (we were somewhat confused that you called it My Brompton - don't you have a name for it yet?)
That is a fantastic explanation and demonstration. Thank you !
( I remember my grandfather taking apart his sturmey-archer hub, and it taking him weeks to reassemble it correctly. Without a manual, and the internet didn't exist then.)
Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed my first time taking a hub apart, on a rainy Sunday! But putting the hair springs back in…. Not such fun!
Thank you for watching!
I bought an M3L today! The first thing I noticed was the ticking noise when pedalling in gear 2 and 3 but in gear 1 it was silent?!? Watching this video I’m glad to see it’s normal with your demonstration near the end of the video.
We all know you get it freewheeling on a normal geared bike so it takes some getting used to when you hear it as you pedal!
Excellent video as always!!
Thank you so much, I’m really glad it was helpful! And thank you for watching!
Nice video. Really interesting to see the inside of the hub and also have the ticking noise explained in more detail as very different noises to other bikes! 👍
So when I Pedal on then the gear that ticking noise as I ride is normal then. But it goes away on the 1st gear
@@ellahow6247 yes that is totally normal of the hub gear to make different noises in different gears so nothing to worry about but it is strange at first but you will get used to it. Mine makes different noises depending if it is in 1st 2nd or 3rd gear on the Sturmey Archer Hub 👍
Love these videos! Thanks so much for making me smile!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for making us smile too - with your kind comment!
OH GOD! there's two of you!........all the same great video and please Keep Safe!!
Love the videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Glad you like them! Thank you so much for the kind comment - and of course for taking your valuable time to watch them!
I did buy a Sturmey Archer spanner, as security, when I bought my Brompton Lightweight, but I didn't actually knew where to use it - but now I know!
It really amazing and informative video. Thanks a lot! And a friendly reminder, if you wish to use the time line function, you may wish to rewrite the timeline as shown below in the description. Always start with 0:00 as the first item and with the time-strap prior to the caption. By then, you can activate the chapter function. Both the time-strap and caption will be appeared on the timeline in UA-cam automatically. That also increases the chance of this great video being searched online. Here again thank you for your videos! Really Brilliant Bike Channel!

8:40 Outtakes - where we got It wrong
Thanks so much for the kind feedback
And for the timeline tip - we’ll give that a go
I think that is your best video to date. Thanks
Wow, thanks - that's so kind go you to say that
We really appreciate the kind feedback
I’m going to use that ticking as my phone message tone 👍
Very informative. Thank you
I don't have a Brompton, but I do like your videos! 👍🤣
Thanks. I was wondering what the ticking sound was. Now I know.
And.. Let's gently remove the 'spring' so it doesn't fall on the floor..
Spring: falls and rolls away..
Me: LOL!
The way you threw away the spring is so entertaining hahaha
That’s plenty ‘geeky’ enough for me thanks 😱😱😂😂
Great teardown. Dan Burkhart's is very good , but not on a nice new clean one. 100 year old clockwork, great design.
Really a pawling
Thank you. I feel better for knowing that 😃
They remind me of my English learning class from a LP record ...Good video .
More geeky teardowns please. ❤
I’m a two speed s bar hooligan but still love that tick!
Mind blowing video
⚙️🔧🚴❤️Amazing always wanted to see inside the hub and the gears ⚙️ thanks 😊 and now understand the ticking ps please say hi to your twin 😅glad she’s got a Brompton now question what’s a greek are they from Greece?🤔🌹does your twin ride on the Stratford velo drome rd track to test her Brompton maybe I will see her there 🙏
Can you make a video on the Basingstoke Canal? We need something soothing with a dose of nostalgia. Maybe on the short wheelbase?
I've been interested in picking up a Brompton recently, so I've been binging your truly wonderful videos. (Really, almost no-one else goes into this sort of depth). One question: Do you have any thoughts on what might happen if you were to lubricate the inside the inside of the hub? (either filling it entirely, or just liberal application). No idea if this is advisable, or even possible, just curious!
Many thanks for watching!
If you are talking about a 3 / 6 speed hub they lubricanted inside. Some have so much lubrication they don’t free wheel properly for the first 100 miles.
Hope that answers the question 😀
Love the videos. Can you talk about brakes please?
Brilliant video! I should have watched this video before servicing my own BWR 3 speed hub. Like what you said, if you don't know what you are doing, do not attempt to service the hub yourself. I made the mistake of watching another video where the guy just slather thick bearing grease all over the pawls and gear hub shell. I ended destroying my actuator plate. I would really appreciate it if you can produce a proper hub servicing video, like what type of grease and hub oil to use.
7:16 despite having the Sturmey Archer BWR 6 speed in your hand the caption reads "Brompton BSR Standard Ratio 3 speed"
But thumbs up and many thanks for the vlogs.
Isn't that because it is a 3 speed hub? The doubling up to six comes from the use of a derailleur, hence the two cogs outside the hub. Let's dismantle a Rohloff 14 speed next :-)
@@TVplanetclaire Yes the BWR is a 3 speed hub, it is your caption, labeling it (the shown BWR) as BSR that is wrong.
Godd video thanks. Are you ever meant to change the oil in the hub and if so how? I know early Sturmey Archer hubs had a small cap you could move to reveal a hole to put oil in but not the modern ones. Thanks in advance.
All free-wheel bikes have the freewheel "ratchet rattle" which is loud and clear when they are freewheeling, or when the pedals are turned backwards . This is true whatever kind of gears they have. Freewheel rattle naturally stops when you stop freewheeling, and pedal, Note: the ratchet is absent in fixed-wheel bikes, otherwise known as "fixies." They can't make a rattle, and you can't stop pedalling them, either.
In addtion to the usual freewheel rattle, Sturmey Archer hub gears do make a quiet "tick" when being pedalled, but ONLY when the middle gear of the three is the one selected. If there is any hub-gear tick from the top or bottom gears, I have not noticed it... (not yet I haven't).
No. There are pawlless freewheeling devices as well. Cone clutches for example.
@@westelaudio943 Pawl-less, eh? I haven't heard of those. Is that a new developement, meaning less than 20 years?
@@effyleven
No, they are just as old as pawl systems, if not older.
Mostly used in single speed hubs.
Cone clutches are not used in multi speed hubs anymore, but in the Nexus-8 at least some of the freewheeling is done by roller clutches, which are also noiseless and a very old concept.
Love your videos. Thank you for making them. My brommie has a little rattle when I go over bumps. Like if I was going along a street made of little bricks or slight cobbles.. I get this strange sort of plasticky rattle from the back. Do you have that also? I've been trying to figure it out for months! :)
Check that your chain tensioner is still (finger) tight on the hub axle
Hello and thank you so much for your video! It helped a lot, since I'll be soon have to look at the inside of a Sturmey 3-speed hub. I don't know if you can answer to my question, but here it is: I'm experiencing a continous ticking from the hub, even when pedaling! The major problem is that second gear, so normal drive, has the pedals running freely, like the gearbox is in neutral (I don't know if this is the fault that's called "slipping"). I really don't know what the problem is and what spare parts I have to look for. I've been studying forums and the original schemes from the company but I still don't know if the problem is with clutch or the spring pawls (maybe that's why I always hear the ticking?). Thank you in advance for any suggestion! Davide
I went two speed to avoid the clicking. Brompton all have to have the jockey wheel regardless, so I figured 2-speed derailleur is the way. Never looked back.
when are you going to follow up with the advance sturmey archer geek video? i'm interested
#posh, in the most delightful way.
I have a question about this hub. Is it normal that when I push the bike backwards, sometimes the pedals spin backwards, and other times they stand still and only clicks are heard. I hope that I have explained the problem clearly. I will be grateful for your opinions.
I bought mine, it vibrates on 1. Gear, so I will bring it to the dealer tomorrow to get it checked.
Testbike was perfectly ok
hai... please share the video how to remove and install Frame/Stem pivot pin replacement... thanks...
is it normal at all to feel a slight vibration while pedaling in gears 1 and 3? i have a 6 speed and it doesn't seem to make a difference whether it's in high or low gear, but if the hub gears are in 1 or 3, i seem to feel a faint vibration thorough the crankset as i pedal. it doesn't seem to affect gear 2.
"By Brompton" or "My Brompton"? Is there a typo in your title? (must have been your twin sister at the keyboard). Very informative video about noisy SA hubs and why they are that way. My SRAM hub was much quieter as mentioned. Would like to see more on hub maintenance. OIl for the hub? Grease or oil on the indicator chain? Benefits of keeping the indicator chain clean(ish)? Keep up the informative videos.
Thank you for watching - and for the feedback on the type - you are correct
Thanks also for the kind comments
We will get to the hub maintenance soon(ish) - luckily they don't need much (we almost quoted Sheldon Brown in saying the majority of Sturmey Archer problems are actually down to the controls - not the hub itself)
Should one oil the little chain that goes into the hub. I have been told that use a bit of wet chain lube on the pull chain and reinsert it into the hub. After cleaning it first.
Does it make the ticking sound when pedaling? I heard others mention only gear 2 won't, but my 2021 brompton does not make the ticking sound only on gear 1.
The black plastic ring on the spring is missing in the video. It must have fallen off. Also i have seen that both the outter bearing nuts on the hub are little different in colour. Is this due to the plastic ring on the spring ?
More geeky videos please.
Do you have to do maintenance on the sturmey archer hub from time to time or is it maintenance free?
What's her good name? ;) Awesome presentation and sense of humour! hahaha.....
Thank you so much and thank you for watching! Oh she doesn’t have a name yet 😆
Great stuff! I have been tempted to suggest a video about 3 spd hub maintenance. The only thing stopping me from doing so was a suspicion that there might be too much involved to usefully deal with in a video. Not worried about that any more, so could you please show a full annnual hub service?
I'd particularly like to find out what lubricants Brompton recommends - if they do, that is.
And not forgetting any crucial differences between the standard and wide ratio hubs. I know, its a lot to ask. But now there are two of you...
Seems way quieter than Campag to me!
What Poc helmet are you wearing ?
Do we need to service it? My shop here in Malaysia said. No need, if you do not have any problem. Is this true?
Thanks for watching
Yes - generally they just work - normally if they are not working properly it's the gear cable / indicator chain (not the inside) that is at fault
@@brilliantbikes Tq. My Brompton is almost 3 years old... so far working great. 👍🏻
If i am going to criticize brompton it is that if you want to fix your bike in an emergency their Manual owner guide is im part only in 2D ( images ) and you will need binoculars to examine the image ... for example . Page 16 about REMOVING THE GEAR CABLE.............. it is only in 2 D the first image ... small components nuts bolts etc and a super thin gear cable and they have a diagram in 2 D ( and only 1 image ) .. once you remove all these components or have accidently fallen apart you will be better off making a photo before you tamper.......... because Bromton´s manual will leave you wanting !!! and most probably slightly annoyed . Also these nuts and bolts and components are way too small and not easy to grab with your own hand and it is not an easy fix if you are on the road at night etc..... they should make the senstive parts easy to fix or at least a little easier to hold.... in the hand .... Why has the one of the most sensitive parts of the bike got just 1 ---- 2d image is beyond me.. You will need super small hands to be successful fixing this problem late at night OR eben in the daytime.. make sure you take some money for the bus or a taxi with you just incase.
Do the later BWR 6 speed hubs also make the same noise?
Many thanks for watching and for the question.
Yes, the orange bike in the video is a new-ish model from 2019.
Nice video editing it, really looks like uou have a clone!
Thank you so much for watching! It was fun to make - talking to myself… when I was not there!
After how long do I need to grease?
Why is it impossible to get any truly silent hubs anymore
It's all slightly bonkers!
Thanks for the video! Amazing subject that is a nice to know!
btw, you shouldn't be communicating with 'others' without a mask on a public bench :)
Good point! Luckily, people from the same family are allowed to mix ;-)
Thanks for the kind comment on the video - and for watching
Hello! do you know if lateral movement on the sprockets is normal? I noticed that my rear hub has some movement (as if the cone was loose, but it isn't) in the part of the hub that holds the sprockets, I removed the sprockets and the hub looks ok, not loose. Here's a video of what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/Q5bhdXy7sTM/v-deo.html , do you notice this same movement on your bikes? Thanks a lot!!! Take care.
Hello
No - it definitely shouldn't do that!
It's worth taking the wheel out for a closer look
@@brilliantbikes thanks for your response! Do you think that is adjusted by the cone on the drive side? Thanks!
@@brilliantbikes hi! good news, it was the cone, I cleaned and re-greased the 3 sets of bearings, and adjusted the cone on the non-drive side. Thanks a lot for your videos ❤️
This is funny. It's obvious that you guys are reading from a cheat sheet, or a board or as if someone near is coaching you. Or someone is whispering on your ears. Make it not too obvious hahaha.
Sorry no cheat sheets or whispering going on here - is make much less mistakes! Thanks for watching
Ah, so very clear. My bike has a nuclear-powered presta valve: please could you explain nuclear physics to me? And why are all these parts male? Is it 'cos they're called Pawl? Oh just FF me to the outtakes!
Thanks for watching - we considered calling it "It's not Paul it's Pawl" or some other name!
Your eyes are a lovely blue, but your sister's are even nicer.
Why does that lady speak like a robot?
I like your twin sister better. 😀
Why am I watching this other than to hear her sweet voice and take in those pretty hair bangs?
As a former tech writer, I appreciated the methodical way you explained the mechanism, going step-by-step and with demonstrations and illustrations. Well done!
