I just tried this, and running the diagnostic actually fixed my problem by itself without having to do anything else. I have a Kitchenaid Model KDTE104ESS2. My original problem was that the circulation pump went bad, so I took the dishwasher apart and replaced the pump. When I put the whole thing back together, I found that the new pump was working but the heating element wasn't working anymore. I tested the element and the safety sensor that makes sure the element didn't overheat. They were both fine. Then I found this video and ran a diagnostic. It gave me the code 7-1, which means the dishwasher wasn't heating. The diagnostic sheet said one possible cause was that the controller had gotten set so that it would run the washer but not turn on the heating element. Running the diagnostic test resets that condition. So I ran the test again and that time the dishwasher worked fine. Thanks for figuring this out and sharing with it everyone. I think if I had called a repairman, he would have told me to replace the whole controller or to get a new dishwasher. You really helped me out.

I had the same experience. Ran the diagnostic, got the 7-1 code, and the diagnostic test "reset the heater". So relieved!! Big thanks to Michael for the video, and Jason for his comment. Cheers!!!

Thank you! I have a similar (newer model) & was looking for instructions on how to reset my hidden control panel. Your video helped& it’s running through what I hope will be a successful reboot/ reset/ clearing! If not it’s still under warranty & the repair people are supposed to be here in a couple days! My model only has one led light on the door so I’ll pay attention and see if it flashes in any particular pattern!
    Thanks again!

On my Kitchenaid KUDS30FXSS1 I pressed "hi temp-Sani Rinse-Heat Dry" one at a time ion that order three times and everything lit up and closed the door. Diagnostic testing began after a couple of minutes total time for the test was maybe 20 minutes and then all LED's were off. My issue in the first place was the green led signifying cycle complete was not lighting up the past few uses. Not sure if this will repair it until my next wash.

Great vid. To the point (unlike some that ramble on). Just so happens my model is pretty much what you have. Same problems. Ran diagnostic and get the same code. Let me know what ended up going on yours. This is my 2nd Kitchenaid. When I replaced the last one, I knew I had about 2 yrs before problems would start. The Kitchenaid brand is most definitely NOT what it used to be. I just couldn't justify paying x3 for a MUCH better Miele with the same options. Besides, I got to know my last Kitchenaid inside-out. Most fixes are easy (knock on wood). Problem is, I've forgotten everything and have to re-learn. haha.

We have a similar model KitchenAid (model KDTE104EBL1). It is 4.5 years old. After owning 3.5 years, the washer would fill with water in basin but would not move the washer arms (in other words... it didn't wash). Faulty pump that we replaced ourselves. Key thing to note (esp for new-ish) KitchenAid dishwashers: if you replace a part, run the Diagnostic Cycle all the way thru to clear any previously stored fault codes!! (if you don't, certain functions like heating cycle, might stay disabled). Also, I enter Diagnostic Cycle by opening door, ensure Cancel is not lit, then close & open door, press each soil cycle button (1 sec or less apart): tough, normal, light. Immediately repeat this 2 more times. All panel lights come on, then close door to start Diagnostic Cycle. The clean light will blink Function+Problem codes 3 times (5 sec between each), then will show next Function+Problem codes (if any exist). Max 4 F+P codes are stored. Once all codes are shown, 5 sec pause, then Clean light stays on for 5 sec and the rest of the diagnostic continues. Once the diagnostic part is done, dishwasher will beep and any F+P codes found will be shown (3 times each). Finally, there will be a beep and all lights turn off. IF you miss the F+P codes at end of diagnostic, you can re-enter the Diagnostic Cycle which will start by showing you any F+P codes found. Final note... if you cannot enter Diagnostic Cycle, unplug dishwasher for 1 minute, then plug in and try entering Diagnostic Cycle again. HIGHLY recommend getting the Service Technician's (Tech) sheet as it lists all F+P codes plus possible solutions. For this model, it is the "W10580766B.fm" pdf.

I have a model#KDTM404ESS3 and the control panel has a little different button layout but the key is to use the consecutive buttons ending with the Sani rinse button.
So what I got after power cycling the dishwasher, starting the diag, and closing the door was
the front panel display having every word lit up for a few seconds
and then it was all off for a couple seconds.
Then the 'CLEAN' word was flashing 3 sequences each of 7-1, 6-1, 5-1, 8-2.
Then it automatically started an express wash cycle and got to the same failure point where there was no spraying with a low constant hum.
5-1 is a door switch failure which is hard to believe considering the test is started by closing the door.

I ended up calling the manufacturer and told them what was going on and for some reason they gave me an option of repair companies to call in my area. I then had a local company come out and he said the pump was not working and he would replace it. It was all done at not cost to me out of warranty and I had no extended one either, so I was kinda shocked but I'll take it! Call the manufacturer and see what they can do for you. (That pumps kind of a bear to get out I watch the tech remove it.) Good luck!

    * BE CAREFUL * Our KitchedAid KDFE104DSS2 dishwasher stopped working, had blinking lights as soon as wash cycle started. So I ran the diagnostics. The diags gave me the code (6 1), but few seconds after that, there was a smell, burning smell. The control board got fried. I have no idea how diagnostics can do that, but it apparently did. Thanks Whirlpool. Unfortunately these are expensive, so not sure worth replacing, or buy a new dishwasher, argh.

I have a Kitchenaid also, but it does not have a front display. Only buttons on the top (same as yours). Using the troubleshooting guide, it looks as if after all the LEDs light up it should go into the error display mode, but mine sits there with all LEDs lit up. If I close the door, I cannot see anything, so I have not closed the door yet (also have the drain pump out so didn't want water to go everywhere if it starts up). @@fiveyorks I have a 5.5 year old kitchenaid KDTE504DSS0. It stops mid-way into the wash cycle and behaves as if someone has opened the door. I have had a repair person out twice to look at it. They replaced the door latch. Still had the same behavior. I replaced the control board after watching some videos, and still have the same behavior. Tried to run diagnostics (1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3) and they don't behave correctly either. So it is time for a new Bosch dishwasher. I have sunk about $450 into this Kitchenaid for nothing.
