Wilkes sucked! Calling for soft coverage while blitzing allowing 12 yard cushion on a damn 3 and 10. Bull$hit! Guy was clueless. We should have won last year. Can’t expect blowing super bowls and think we are gonna make it right back. This is football!!! Unlike any other sport, between injuries and playoff sudden death, it’s hard to keep coming back. Thank you for the breakdown Mr Jonny! Something that really bothers me about Coach Kocurek. Our defensive line does not get their hands into the passing lanes if they don't get to the Quarterback. Time and time again the defensive line never get their hands up. Would love to see them get this fundamental put in place.

Defense not playing as a complete unit…can’t have 10 out of 11 guys on point and 1 lost in the sauce…McKivitz gonna be a problem all season…teams are just attacking our known weaknesses…interior DL and McKivitz one on one…gotta fix it
Personally kinda over the wide 9. We keep hearing about Kris Kourek and his amazing abilities but every year we go through the same DL problems. While other teams get production from no namers. Especially in this quick passing attack era. Takes too long for those ends to get there
Why does BA go out of bounds on a double tree route with Jauan? Even if JJ caught the ball for a TD, going out of bounds takes you out of the play limits Purdy's options. Good thing this didn't cost them. When you get salary increases by the tenfold, expectations just go up that much higher. I see more chemistry with JJ than BA, three weeks into the season.
Lost a game when winning by ten is giving me PTSD….. too many times I’ve seen shanahan teams lost that way…. It is starting to look like a pattern that won’t be fixed…
I was at SoFi to watch the game. Jennings and Purdy both had amazing games. Aiyuk thinks he's TO with all those drops; Bell was even worse. But it was the second half defense that completely collapsed. The Niner DC should be suspended for a week and see if one of the ball boys can call it better. Or, how about letting Warner call the defenses? And the special teams coach should be sent packing. On the missed field goal, it looked to me like Moody's timing was thrown off by the poor snap, which Wishnowsky handled pretty well.
Hey Jonny, thanks for breaking this down, I know this one was frustrating. Thanks for your breakdowns, and for putting on the site early. Thoughts on how or if Sorensen can address those times the Rams used those same routes? Further discussion during the podcast?
That's when they should get that sorted out between series. How they go to the sideline, see that happens and then not be ready for it when it comes again is.....off
I appreciate the video, hopefully the 49ers take the lessons from these past games. Regarding the OL, how much of the fault lays on the OL assistant coaches? It seems to me that they're failing to develop or fix player mistakes, because at some point I think we are pushing the blame on the player. The Rams seem to do well despite the injuries; Puni already showed great talent from the start and Trent was great when he started for the 9ers, so we say they were better developed outside the team. Mckivitz, for example, hasn't shown much improvement, what's preventing him for getting better or learn techniques from Trent.
Another great breakdown Johnny. Campbell should be benched and someone with better speed should take his place (Robinson?). Ward looks like he's playing injured and Ronnie Bell...well, isn't very good at catching thr football.
The theme of this game should be "execution is key." There are problems with the defensive scheme, sure. And those need to be addressed. But even then: Offensive Line executed poorly. Defensive Backs executed poorly. Defensive Front Four executed poorly. Aiyuk and Bell executed poorly. To be honest, the only reason this game was close at all was that Brock and Jennings had one of their best games ever. At times I was wondering if there were conditioning issues - as the game rolled on I couldn't tell of our guys were gassed or just demotivated by the momentum the Rams got or what, but it definitely felt like they didn't have the spark at the end that they did at the beginning of the game.
I tend to be an "execution is king" guy. What was more frustrating was feeling like the Rams much less talented defense was much more on their details and gameplan than we were.
@@jonnydel I would say the lack of preseason as a reason but the rams don't believe in it either so I can't explain why there are so many execution issue it is like the prep week the team look at the rams and felt like they didn't need to be technically sound it is an easy game and found out this is the NFL and that is a division opponent
he's right, a lot of smaller details that need to be tuned up and executed properly. Can't have guys just standing around not blocking or trying to get clear and open either. I thought Bell should have used Juice's crosser to create a natural rub to run all the way across the field (right to left) on the scramble drill to open space (not the most ideal to throw across body but if it's open it's open you know?) Also, on the botched punt coverage all Mustapha (6) had to do was get under control and corral him enough to allow the cavalry to help him out. There was also a mild clip/block in the back by the guy who hit Tonges.
imo yes there was a lot of opportunities 49ers missed to end their score at 27 or 31 points. yeah special teams dropped the ball, bell and aiyuk dropped it literally. but know one failed harder than defense that Sunday. there is no excuse for defense giving up this many points to a practice squad Rams offense. I think Ji'Ayir Brown and Isaac Yiadom have to go, they got cooked twice now. we are playing with only one LB Fred needs help. front 4 have been way too quite and now Hargrave is out for season. looking like a bust year
We could have everyone on offense return healthy right now and I would still be worried. Can't rush and can't cover: a recipe for losing every game you don't blow out the opponent
Really hoping the trouble were seeing on defense is just the early growing pains of the new DC. The positive sign is that Purdy continues to look like he's getting better as he gets more experience. Honestly Purdy's growth is going to be the most important factor and will dictate the direction of this franchise for the next 5+ years.
4:50 this guy really said another good design and execution. Brock purdy was running for his life and made an amazing throw on the move. Wow but thats system and the plan I suppose
Why not touch on the fact that Kyle didn't use a timeout on that last play to their TE? It was an obvious mismatch. We revealed man to man. We had a remaining timeout (that would go to waste if we gave a 1st down there). I don't think it's surprising Stafford quickly attacked Campbell on the outside. Rams got the look they wanted. Why didn't Kyle notice this and call a timeout as soon as the TE motioned to the outside?
That part of it isn't in the tape analysis. I don't cover use of time outs and stuff. That's one thing you lose with the tape, the flow of the game. It is a great question for one of the beat writers to ask
Right after that Bell drop I think we had an out route wide open but Brock felt too much pressure so he decided to run for no gain. Crazy offensive game but one too many mistakes
Is bosa just too slow to be so far wide with the wide 9? I don't know if I've ever seen him actually best a tackle due to speed or speed and move. Doesn't seem like the wide 9 is beneficial especially when runs up the middle are so effective against our bad interior Dline
3 things 1. Bosa….PLEASE PULL OFF A BETTER MOVE THAN A SPIN! He is struggling like hell right now! Not worth the money! 2. We are losing the opportunity battle - that is, the critical moment battle. We are not making plays when we really need em. 3. Campbell and Bell need to get replaced. Cowing and some rookies need to see the field!
Changing DC every season has to be contributing to this defence putting in such poor performances. These players are too good and experienced for these kind of outings.
I thought the guy was tackled short on the fake punt but nobody ever talked about it and they never showed a close up replay. It still looks short to me here.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Kyle Shanahan is still making the EXACT same coaching mistakes today that he was making 5 years ago. EVERY SINGLE TIME the 49ers lose a big game the script is almost exactly the same with only minor differences. It is insanity to expect the result to change when HE will not change. Kyle Shanahan might be the brightest offensive mind in the game today. He is a great play *DESIGNER.* He is an _ass_ play *CALLER* and there is a preponderance of evidence to prove that. He is *NOT* a head coach. He is an offensive coordinator with delusions of grandeur. Get him out, bring in the Hoodie. I GUARANTEE that if they get rid of Lynch and Shanahan and bring in Belicheck, he leads the 49ers to a Super Bowl win next season. They can easily find an assistant somewhere that can run the Shanahan offense to be the coordinator and obviously the Hoodie will fix the defense ASAP.
There's a lot of NFL players these days with interesting names. Puka, Tutu, Chuba. I hope the Rams can have them all on the roster at the same time. They have a head start at it.
I've got a question for you JD, my takeaway was Purdy, and Jennings carried this came. Purdy struggled but extended plays, made great passes, and USED HIS LEGS! With what you know and saw, i believe Lurdy kept us in this game. Without him, i see a bigger deficit. What are your thoughts? Also, i just am failing to understand the problem with the 49ers right now. This team went from premium in the league to disjointed, uncoordinated, and inefficient. Purdy struggled, sure, but he pulls through in the end. How in one off-season did we go from a well-oiled machine to something i struggle to even point at every flaw? Sorry for the novel, but any response is appreciated. You're one of the few whose content i watch, let alone trust, so im wondering at your genuine takes right now. Thanks, man, and grade A content! Keep it up, and i hope for your success!
Purdy played a heck of a game. He was the best thing on offense. I think a lot of the issues on offense come down to Shanahan rebuilding an offense that was meant to be around CMC, Deebo and Kittle - he didn't even know Aiyuk would be on the team or not.
@jonnydel thats a good point. But something just seems wrong. We have arguably the best roster and skilled players in the league, are we at the point where age is becoming an issue and scheme is becoming predictable? So many people have talked about how us not running the ball doomed us, but our run was ineffective, and the passing game worked, so I do not understand what people are saying. It's like everyone keeps pointing to the wrong stuff
Bosa seems to have gotten away from the broad repertoire that made him such a problem previously. Stop focusing on spin moves (which is still a WIP) and focus on leveraging tackles inside and out - that's what has always been his biggest strength. Playing with low leverage and power, with the occasional threat of speed.
@@BeingButterfly he's not good enough at it to use it in critical situations. There were two times in the second half of the Jets game where he burned Moses with it, but more often than not he ends up getting bear hugged from the back and no official is going to really call that consistently.
on Jenning's second TD, Aiyuk going out of bounds.. total lack of effort and attention to detail... also on the missed deep ball, while Purdy is trying to buy himself time.. what was Aiyuk doing half speeding across the field?? I get it that he is still working to get in football shape b/c of the holdout.. but wtf?!?
All the stuff that's messed up, and you focused on BA. Obviously, the offense is schemes for him not to be the primary read through the whole game. They used him to clear out. I saw a lot of things wrong. BA isn't the reason they lost.
right!?! I like some of the tie ins he has. The Nebraska is actually a variation off an Omaha route. Heat is a route in a miami concept. China is a reference to a route breaking back inside after an out cut, return is a name for a route breaking back outside after going in. There's a system to many of them but then there's some that are just out there.
So is it the scheme or is it the players? If we get beat on multiple same plays…who is not identifying this?! We fired Wilkes…is it a problem higher than that or is it the wrong fit on the field? Add a weak pass rush…we are toast.
It's both. How you keep running the same thing that is getting roasted is bad. How you can go to the sideline, see the play on film that beat you, then get beat by it again is hard.
Would love deeper analysis on what the defense can do at 14:30 for example. What was the problem or how do the Niners counter what the Rams were running? Is it a tendency/schematic issue or was it just players not executing properly?
I know you don't want to be a UA-camr who calls for people's heads, but the issues with the special teams unit aren't restricted to the last 2 games. They have been consistently awful for the past 2 YEARS and don't seem to have got any better this year. How bad do they have to get for Brian Schneider to get fired? Even John Chapman said as much, and he never talks about firing coaches.
I think the problem is the coach and his stubborn arrogance. Brock has more to offer along with other players, but as you see, the plays drawn out and he understands the reads and clear-outs. You can understand why Purdy did hit BA. Hes not allowed to play freely. Even on the scrambles when WRs are getting open, he is still looking for his 1st option. Great job with the breakdowns!
I have noticed the same thing. You see rookie Brock in the pre-season and he was doing all sorts of things. Starter Brock after 3 years seems hesitant for some reason especially this season. Purdy can do a lot more than what that offense allows. If you loosen the reigns, the 49'ers could go all the way.
I get it that most of this game Brock was playing well, but he’s got to hit 11 on that play. He has to. There’s zero excuse for it. It was infuriating, more than the drops. Yes, more than that. Elite QBs make that throw. Brock isn’t there yet.
It's sad that people like you are so insecure that you will ignore all the elite throws that Brock Purdy was made and take one missed throw and hang your had on that as THE reason why he is not elite. Every elite QB misses throws sometimes. Get outta here dude. For real.
the thing is he has always been overrated and that film he looks so small compared to the tackle but yet not faster than the backup tackle it is concerning last year we was like it was the hold out but now we have to understand he is a complete waste of money rookies and journeymen look faster more agile than Bosa does and he is the top paid
While he's far from being the biggest problem, Purdy's ball placement isn't where it was last year. Both of Aiyuk's "drops" are clearly behind him. That TD to Jennings at the back of the endzone is also behind him.
@@jonnydel You can also say that when Purdy is on track to make 50 million per year, he should be putting the ball out in front of the receivers instead of behind them. He also should have thrown the ball to Bell down the sidelines over his outside shoulder, but threw it inside towards the safety instead. Bell actually did a good job adjusting to the ball before he dropped it. I think Purdy played at a B level in this game rather than the A level most people seem to think.
@@puckutubesux7356 You can literally over analyze passes every so-called "elite" QB in the league today and see the same thing if not worse. Purdy's ball placement is fine. People just _choose_ to focus on the negative. Purdy had 291 yards, 3TDs, a passer-rating of 137.1 and rushed for 41 yards. If that is a "B-level" performance, he's already won the damned MVP.
You can’t understand just how much I appreciate a 49ers internet account that isn’t just about how the coaches should be fired and the players are trash and the season is over after 3 games.

Yeah, Brown lookin' like hot garbage out there. Really hope he can get his shit together.
I hated it. But it was still amazing content. Thanks JD.
on Jenning's second TD, Aiyuk going out of bounds.. total lack of effort and attention to detail... also on the missed deep ball, while Purdy is trying to buy himself time.. what was Aiyuk doing half speeding across the field?? I get it that he is still working to get in football shape b/c of the holdout.. but wtf?!?
😬😬
All the stuff that's messed up, and you focused on BA. Obviously, the offense is schemes for him not to be the primary read through the whole game. They used him to clear out. I saw a lot of things wrong. BA isn't the reason they lost.
@@dh1382ba aint been playing like last year and it sucks but hes becoming the scapegoat here
So far Wilkes defense was performing better as opposed to the new defense coordinator
But there's still a lot of season left let's see what happens❤
77 on the rams is their starting LT fyi not the backup.
I feel bad that you have to rewatch this game and do a video on it
Been scared to watch this one...😅
Lean into it...lean in, lol
These names for the routes are crazy
China refers to fine china . Man this world is getting cray cray
How you can go to the sideline, see the play on film that beat you, then get beat by it again is hard.
so we can't stop this one play over and over and over again... smh
Yeah.....sucks
I can hear Nick Wrong now "If Purdy had a good arm he could have gone over the top to Conley instead of forcing Jennings to make a great catch". Lmao
When your coaches are consistently inconsistent, success will be difficult to achieve.
Would love deeper analysis on what the defense can do at 14:30 for example. What was the problem or how do the Niners counter what the Rams were running? Is it a tendency/schematic issue or was it just players not executing properly?
I dont think you highlighted enough how bad Mckivitz was this gm
The first play was a 1 on 1 with a top 5 paid WR. Think it was supposed to go to BA but he sucks
It was designed for Jennings 100%
i’m smelling another loss this weekend
I know you don't want to be a UA-camr who calls for people's heads, but the issues with the special teams unit aren't restricted to the last 2 games. They have been consistently awful for the past 2 YEARS and don't seem to have got any better this year. How bad do they have to get for Brian Schneider to get fired?
Even John Chapman said as much, and he never talks about firing coaches.
So many missed opportunities 😢
I see no issues with the offense.
2020
Our d-line is too old.
Sounds like Sorensen needs to either coach better or get replaced by Staley.
This game made me sick….
yeeeeup
Still waiting Hargrave play like he's paid
Gonna be waiting a while
I guess Wilkes was not the problem?
He may have not been the problem for what happened last game, but it doesn't mean he wasn't a problem
Offense lines sucks
I get it that most of this game Brock was playing well, but he’s got to hit 11 on that play. He has to. There’s zero excuse for it. It was infuriating, more than the drops. Yes, more than that.
Elite QBs make that throw. Brock isn’t there yet.
It's sad that people like you are so insecure that you will ignore all the elite throws that Brock Purdy was made and take one missed throw and hang your had on that as THE reason why he is not elite. Every elite QB misses throws sometimes. Get outta here dude. For real.
@@D2Kprimesoft! Just like this era of football. He missed a throw an elite qb wouldn’t have.
Campbell is bad. Looks washed. Wish Winters didn't look so unreliable mentally...
Defense defense defense. Either work on it or new coach I've never seen our defense ranked so low
My heart weeps for the missed Saubert opportunity. He'll break out one of these games I swear.
I hope so
Nick Bosa, most over paid player in the league
Aiyik doesn't think so
Nick Bosa is overrated.
He hasn't been the same since he got the 💰. I guess Aiyuk is doing his Nick Bosa impression.
the thing is he has always been overrated and that film he looks so small compared to the tackle but yet not faster than the backup tackle it is concerning last year we was like it was the hold out but now we have to understand he is a complete waste of money rookies and journeymen look faster more agile than Bosa does and he is the top paid
While he's far from being the biggest problem, Purdy's ball placement isn't where it was last year. Both of Aiyuk's "drops" are clearly behind him. That TD to Jennings at the back of the endzone is also behind him.
With Aiyuk's drops, considering the catches Jennings had, 30m/year for Aiyuk should be catching those.
If that is a "B-level" performance, he's already won the damned MVP.
love shanahan's reaction on the sidelines at 14:01
Nick Sorensen seems to be a downgrade from steve wikis.
Time will tell. Wilks fell off each week until the bye, then repeated the pattern
It's ALWAYS the same exact problems, every game, every year....
All the Aiyuk hate NEEDS TO STOP! He's top 5 in this league 🛑
Beautiful hold by #69 at 27:54 lol, hands to the face by #50
