- It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when a sequel to a highly popular and profitable movie wasn't a done deal. Each was film renegotiated just before they were made. Actors signing multi-film deals was very rare. Now if you decide to do a Marvel film, you may be asked to sign a nine-movie contract. While Ghostbusters II wasn't a critical darling, it did make its budget back ten times over. Surely another film had to be in the works. Some of the cast and creative team were ready to give it another go, but some holdouts stalled a third Ghostbusters film for decades. It took some of them literally dying before another film could finally grace movie screens. What kept this film from getting made sooner? Let's find out here on What Happened To This Unmade Film.

I dunno. He seems to be a pretty cool guy. But he's also not going to be the person you think he'll be.

something that Seth Green found out the hard way when he was a kid. Murray grabbed and lifted him by the ankle and dropped him into a garbage bin in SNL green room. Eddie Murphy had to calm the kid down.
Murray may look like a cool dude when the camera is on him, be it shooting a film or an interview, but off camera he's a known troublemaker.
If I saw Aykroyd and Murray in the same room, I would approach Aykroyd with eagerness and acknowledge Murray with civil disinterest.

If I was an original Ghostbuster, I'd have pulled Bill Murray aside for a reality check. I'd also be full of deep irritation regarding the fact that a cast member had to die before a third movie could be made.

You've gotta love studio thinking. "Well, if this movie that has nothing at all in common with Ghostbusters can be made for $60,000 surely they can do it too."
Yeah,very dumb suggestion,since the first 2 films cost a lot of money to be made.The folks in charge of running these studios aren't the sharpest-TOOLS-in the shed. LOL.
If I recall correctly there was also a talk about making a a computer animated film sometime in mid 2000’s… with similar plot… also there’s an episode in the real ghostbusters where there’s New York filled with ghosts etc and ghostbusters were called people busters… it’s actually not a bad episode. Overall the real ghostbusters had plenty of great episodes that could have great ideas for a 3rd film… as the tv show sometimes directly acknowledged what happened in the original film also happened in the real ghostbusters universe… basically making them the same universe. I find it was clever and ballsy
I loved Ghostbusters 2 and never understood the warm receiption.
During the 1st half of this video, I was kinda devastated that this never happened but then at and after the Manhelltan point, I suddenly became extremely relieved that this never happened [PHEW]… we really dodged a bullet on that one👀
I remember following the production of this and other scripts, back in the 90s on the early days of Netscape Internet.
I seem to remember hearing that Conan O'Brien was involved in co-writing one draft, but it could've just been a rumor.

It should be noted that the cartoon series "the real GB" did a story/episode similar to this.... can't remember what it was called but it always stood out in my memory of the show. It was pretty F'n creepy. And also Rick moranis wasn't so much bored with acting as much as his wife had passed away and was more concerned with taking care of his kids full time rather than acting at all

You can tell when Hollywood execs are accountants with delusions of stardom or when they are people who make films. Blair Witch wasn't MADE to be a blockbuster. They were just people who want to scare the shit out of folks. That's it. You can't just MAKE that kind of thing happen in a studio as every sequel clearly shows. Half the movies that are classics are pure accidents and the other half are craft. The producers would be a lot richer if they just let people do their damn jobs.
I find it hard to believe Hellbound could have been made as scripted in the mid to late 90s and not looked like crap and been wayy over budget. The studio would have pushed for "cutting edge" CGI over time consuming practical effects,that would have dated the film in less than a year. The story also sounds like something they already did in the animated series
There was decent CGI mid-late 90's, like Independence Day, etc.... I think they could've made a decent film, imo.
Right, the "Flip Side" episode with the monster Ghostbusters is what I thought of (though honestly... I like that concept better)

You tell the actors (who are not sure they dont wanna come back) look ppl this is the last GB movie, we have a great script, we will have a good time, let's make this happen... in 10 years you'll be sitting with your kids enjoying this amazing trilogy!!!
Insane and unfilmable, but Hellbent was at least a different story from the first and second films.

They should’ve of just went the Extreme GB route for the third film, so they wouldn’t have to involve Peter Venkman and just involve Egon having college students as the new Ghostbusters.

Everything was almost perfect except for Afterlife when they decided to cut Slimer. I know, they tried the "But it's in Oklahoma and we wanted to have local ghosts" cop out . Nope. No reason not to include Slimer as at the end of 2 he emerged as an ally acquiring a city bus and picking up Louis. Slimer could have traveled with the gang to Oklahoma and had an epic battle with the being they replaced it with. I chalk that up to lazy writing.
I loved the first movie so much, I must have watched it a couple hundred times by now honestly, so much so that I have everyone's lines memorized, hahaha, seriously and literally! But I never took it as a comedy movie, for reasons. This was a science movie with some fiction in it, but my child mind wanted to believe them. I took the movie seriously. That all female cast mockery that shall not be named, that thing doesn't count as a Ghostbusters movie! But the other 3 do and I would include the video game as 1 of 4 in total now.
I must admit my shame and embarrassment here, I never heard of Ghostbusters Hellbent until you mentioned it in this video. I have all of the Ghostbusters movies (minus the one that shall not be named) and the game as well, I knew nothing of the Hellbent movie until now. Thanks for the education! Cheers 🍻

This is 90% click bait and fake news. You claim Ghostbusters: Hellbent was written with Chris Farley in mind. Farley passed away in 1997. You show a photo of a first draft of Hellbent dated 1999. All conjecture. None of this is accurate or real. All clickbait.
Hey dips**t pay attention. The idea for hellbent was originally conceived with Chris Farley as the character....but the first draft of the script wasn't written yet. It's not too hard to understand. Akyroyd stated he was trying to get this made for many years, even after Farley passed
No one ever talks about Extreme Ghostbusters.
Because almost no one saw it. Only fans who were online during those days knew it was coming. Its terrible timeslot didn't help exposure either. Thankful my mother recorded them for my while I was in middle school!

Unpopular opinion, maybe, but I wasn't keen on Venkmen, he is if anything a reason for having less interest in watching the movies than I otherwise might. I know it's purposeful from a character standpoint, but he's too much of a self-absorbed horny slimeball type for my tastes. It just puts me off. I don't even really mind the idea of a main character that outright doesn't buy into the supernatural, thinks he can get paid to put on a show, only to be proven wrong. But he takes it into pretty skeezy territory; not just using it to try and get laid (and with someone who genuinely needs some help and he just thinks is a bit nuts), but as I recall he ignored even positive test results because they were from a male participant. Again, they did a good job building the character, but I just found it off putting.

Vince Vaughn would have done way better than Mark. Actually could have been a reasonable replacement for Venkman with a different kind of snark.
Think about the 2000 cast. Instead the 2016 was a garbage heap. The good thing is the flop enabled afterlife to happen.

The reason GB3 took so long to evolve into The Video Game, Afterlife, and the upcoming GB4 can be summed up with one name: Bill Murray. Great character but not a fan of the man himself. It's not like he hasn't made his share of duds during his career, but Ghostbusters is a cut above the average movie so why resist so much, stalling the franchise in the process? Does he even like these movies or just working with friends and the big paycheck? I'm grateful he was in Afterlife, but I feel that was a final bone thrown to the fans with a note attached that said: "Don't ask for anymore."

There was no 2016 movie.
Probably because it did so poorly. Its the first reboot and it looked like it was put together by Nickelodeon. On its own it was eye roll material. It was quickly forgotten because Ramis passed and the old gang got back together, technically even Ramis, and the Afterlife movie absolutely slayed.

How hard is it to continue one of the beloved franchises of all time and complete it was a trilogy? I mean, The Extreme Ghostbusters cartoon was popular in the mid 90’s. If they continued the Ghostbusters legacy with the animated series, they could have done the same for the movies.
Honestly, the 2009 video game is the third movie, 2016 is an abomination and needs to stay dead and buried, and Afterlife is counted as the fourth movie.
While I would’ve loved to seen a Ghostbusters in hell movie… what we got with the 2009 video game and Ghostbusters afterlife aren’t bad either, hopefully we get some sort of Ghostbusters in Hell movie someday

This is an excellent use case for AI assisted artwork, storyboarding an unmade project.
Thanks...it really helps tell the story when we edit these hypothetical episodes! For past ones, we just rehashed older movie clips to try and make sense of the ideas. We'll see if it continues to get a positive response...LOL. I also used it on the Mummy 4 episode.

Thanks! It's been a risky thing to try, but at the end of the day, it tells the story a bit better when talking about films that were never made. Some comments are saying "do your own work"...but that's what photographers told us about Photoshop, and look what happened there LOL.
