The difference between Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) and Intermittent Fasting | Satchin Panda

  • Integral to the benefits associated with time-restricted eating is the concept of fasting physiology, which taps into ancient patterns of defined periods of eating and resting for the purposes of survival. The consumption, digestion, and metabolism of food produces highly reactive molecules that can damage cellular components, including DNA. Time-restricted eating, however, provides the body a much needed "down time." In this episode, Dr. Satchin Panda explains how time-restricted eating realigns the primordial rhythms of our physiology, allowing us to repair and rejuvenate our bodies.

    Satchin Panda is a library on knowledge. Dr. Patrick thank you for this very informative video. I have a university professor that portrays fasting as unhealthy, and I know she is swayed by the erroneous notion that we have to eat three meals a days, breakfast is the most important meal, and that you could end up in the hospital on “extreme diets”. I think she is brainwashed by the cereal companies takeover of science and the media. when I present information to her in favor of the fasting literature. She dismisses my claims and reverts back to the circular reasoning of that fasting is bad for your body. Although she teaches adults and aging, and the textbook even talks about free radicals, time restricted feeding and how it increases rats lifespan by 40%, she is still under the dogmatic beliefs.

    If I'm understanding the difference, TRF and IF is one of time, as in your circadian rhythm. Time it seems here is the key. He talks about eating in a 12hr as opposed to IF when we have a longer 'fasting hours' as in 24hr to 72hrs or longer. And here he adds about animals hunting hours. And that it syncs us with our circadian rythm, and our primordial genome which helps us with our physiology, metabolism, repair and rejuvenation.

    If a person is on a 16/8 IF program and another person is on a TRE program of 16/8 the only difference to label each is the timing of when it starts?

    It sounds like it was renamed to appease the ethics boards since limiting the caloric intake of mice can make approval more difficult.

      IF had a calorie restriction component for experimenters. Later, they wanted to remove the calorie restriction notion so people would accept fasting more, so they called it TRF instead. Wanted to emphasize feeding. So, really no difference in our practice of daily fasting.

    We have with hubris undone how we use to eat. Just because we can mechanize / industrialize/ junkify our food production, does mean we can out smart our bodies on a cellular level,

  • @sdaiwepm
    @sdaiwepm 3 роки тому +1

    It's absolutely not the case that Intermittent Fasting (as recommended by Jason Fung) requires caloric restriction. Quite the opposite. In practice, TRE and IF are synonymous.

  • @miketuttlesmusic
    @miketuttlesmusic 5 років тому +6

    So, the difference between "intermittent fasting" and "time restricted feeding" is semantic? Just to keep people from thinking "calorie restriction" when it is discussed?

    • @immers2410
      @immers2410 4 роки тому +7

      It’s more than that. As Dr Panda said, TRF takes into account the bodies primordial rhythms, ie the circadian element is a key part of it. IF is just about having a specified eating window, whereas with TRF you have the same window, but it matters when it is.

    • @michelangelobuonarroti916
      @michelangelobuonarroti916 3 роки тому

      @@immers2410 Not quite. At least not in this video. He did say that IF included caloric restriction and they wanted to avoid that idea for people who do this, so they called it TRE.

      Dr. Panda has said in other videos that the first coffee engages your hormonal system (forget the exact word) and therefore should be delayed. Yeah, I was disappointed too - but I understand his logic.

    • @Alex-vl1mv
      @Alex-vl1mv 4 роки тому

      This is totaly up to you. The important part is that you should not eat (basically nothing that can shift the body state, which means also tea and coffee) for at least 12 hours, as this much takes for the body to stop using glycogene as energy and to start bruning fat.
      I start eating at 12:00 and stop at 20:00, this works well for my life style. You can adapt the hours based on your own life style.

    • @venkatasaiganji9994
      @venkatasaiganji9994 3 роки тому +7

      Adding to what Alex said, it will be more beneficial if your eating window ends at around Sunset time. Example: An 8 hr window which begins at 10 AM and ends at 6 PM.

She says it's xenobiotics, just as herbal teas and taking vitamins, because your liver and gut has to metabolize it, hence it breaks your fast. Water only when you're fasting.
