I think Zubat's leglessness is the most interesting part of all three stages - Zubat has sort of the vestigial idea of hind limbs, Golbat has what might as well be rudders, and Crobat goes whole hog and turns them into a second pair of wings.
Though Crobat still has a pair of feet; not really attached to any legs. Which makes sense with how it's described as being a fast flying pokémon, but unable to fly for long distances at a time. It could realistically hang upside down and rest with it's tiny claws.
Golbat can stand on its feet though, at least in some of the older 3d versions where it plays up the Dracula trope
@@LathosZan Man stadium did such a good job of giving pokemon character. I always loved the clumsiness of Zubat and Golbat as they fly around bumping into things.

Which is ironic because vampire bats tend to have strong hind legs to help them take off after they feed (since they become a lot heavier)

Crobat is my favorite implementation of the "ugly duckling that turns into a swan" archetype. Comming from an annoyance that no one wants to befriend and becomes a realy cool asset for anyone´s team with love and care.
Yup. And somehow it manages to look sleek and aggressive while still being fundamentally an egg with wings.
It's the opposite for me. I always lived Golbats design and waa disappointed when I first saw Crobat
I think it’s been something of a mistake for Gamefreak to not highlight Golbat’s outrageously large tongue from its original R/B/G sprite. It enhances the middle evolution’s goofiness while giving it a slight tinge of menace.
Like, yes, “it vill suck your blud” but it’s also clearly a frenzied wild animal that you don’t want to be anywhere near.
Yeah, I really like Golbat's fundamental goofiness and the tongue really adds to that imo.
I also really like the clumsiness of the first two forms. Anytime they're animated flying, especially in the earlier 3D games, they tend to fly very erratically, zig zagging through the air, not keeping a stable elevation, and even bumping into things on occasion. Crobat gets rid of a lot of that clumsiness, as it should because it represents a form that has transcended the earlier forms' clumsy flying and has become one of the fastest poison types ever.
I really really like the Zubat line from start to finish. It tells a complete story in a way few other lines do.

It's interesting how their flapping animation changes as they evolve. Crobat has such a different feel to their wings than the others.
I like how all three of this evolutional line have proven useful across Pokemon media for different reasons
Zubat: perfect as a generic representative of cave environments in the games and anime and a good simple obstacle when in swarms.
Golbat: Its goofiness makes it the perfect mid-game enemy for villainous teams
Crobat: makes raising a Golbat worth it and really brings the line into the "cool" category, making it viable for rivals, Gym Leaders, Evil Team bosses etc.
It's also good for visual story telling. You can tell that an evil leader isn't all bad when they have a friendship evolution, & it's usually a Crobat. It shows that for all their villainy, they still have some kind of kindness to them or that they weren't that evil at all. I like this with Cyrus. He says that Pokémon are tools & your love for them is silly. Funny then, Cyrus, how your Golbat evolved into a Crobat. Could it be that you... love your Pokémon, even if you won't admit it?

@@BJGvideos he's not the only example, just the most typical one with the recent release of bdsp. Gladion & Plumeria are also good examples.
Another good example of visual story telling is when they take it in the opposite direction to show that a character is a bastard. Like how Ghetsis' Hydreigon uses a full powered Frustration, showing that it has a literal friendship level of 0, which shouldn't be possible since nothing in its evolution line starts with a friendship lvl of 0, implying that he abuses his pokemon.
Honestly, I think quite a bit of the early Pokémon got their design sheets lost while in development, and I think they did the original pixelart Golbat a real big mouth with some other factions around when the actual pixelart only wanted to show that the Pokémon could open real wide their mouths.
To put it as a reference, it's as if you try to make a pixelart image of LoL's Samira doing her crit melee attack and using the stretched Samira as the template for the design.
I love bats, so I love this line. Yes even Golbat. I had a team with an evolite Golbat once who's whole job was to apply statuses and being annoying lol
Golbat's design _does_ lend itself to that role...

Golbat's design is part of the reason I wish they redesigned older pokémon. Region variants and region evolutions show that they're able to come up with more interesting designs based on mostly the same concepts.
I think that substantially redesigning older Pokémon is a no-win scenario. Not everyone is going to agree on what about older Pokémon designs needs to be changed (aside from a couple real stinkers), and _nobody_ is going to agree on whether the redesigns should stick to early-gen simplicity or embrace detail as much as newer generations have been able to. Giving the old designs a new set of textures and shaders (and the occasional model/animation update) every generation is a boring choice, but a safe one. Nobody's going to complain about that _too_ loudly.

In that case..... They should also redesign most modern Pokemon....... For example the last good looking starters as a whole was gen 3..... And the last good looking starter was piplup.....

I love how everytime somebody talk about Zubat they share a trauma about seeing them to many time while as a bat lover im here dancing in caves wanting to pat every single of them.
Golbat is the first legit unscripted wild shiny I've ever caught, long ago, encountered by chance, in Omega Ruby
Goldbat is that puberty phase you want to be done with, but it takes a lot of time and friendship points to leave behind

Golbat was always rather weird looking to me. it doesnt really feel in place for the line. crobat is wonderful though, with its two pairs of wings. zubat is just cute and i love it

My Crowbat Barbra absolutely carried me and the rest of my team through my Pokemon Platinum Nuzlock. For that I will rate Crowbat as one of my favs from now on.
I think I would've preferred to see the zubat line remain eye-less. Perhaps that'd make a good regional form..
Zubat and Crobat are two of my favorite pokemon. I don't even like to look at golbat it gives me nightmare flashbacks to Gen 1 when its sprite had that horrific TONGUE that still haunts me...
And then there is colloseum 3D crobat that confirmed that his cool cartoon teeth are actually a horrendous overbite while his upper teeth are missing all together
There's a guy by the name of Bogleech who used to write reviews for every Pokemon on his own personal scale. When he reviewed the Zubat line, the one change he suggested to Golbat to make it more line with Zubat was to just remove Golbat's eyes, focusing more on the idea of Golbat just being a giant flying mouth.
Fun fact: Zubat means Toothy in Serbian.

Crobat is such a beast i really enjoyed in in Gen 7. A fast, relativly bulky pokemon with Access to roost, u-turn, toxic, defog and the ability to use black sludge... + a cool typing and also hard hits like brave bird it saved me in many battles
Speaking of Golbat's vampirishness, in some of the 3d renditions, it stands on the ground with its wings wrapped around its face looking like a cape draped across the front.
I know that this is short takes on Pokemon design however I would like to highlight the fact that the Zubat line is a friendship evolution line and while they are freaky at times its honestly sweet that it evolves to better fight beside not just it's trainer but it's friend.
I used to love crobat so much that I caught a zubat in every Pokémon game I could to get one
Zubat was the first shiny I ever found, which means I can not hate it anymore, as much as I would like to.
I used to hate the zubat line, like most people, until I went through Mt Moon when playing SoulSilver, because I found a shiny Zubat while trying to leave. That was the First shiny I had ever caught/found that wasn't preplaced like the Gyrados in the lake of rage. Thats the only reason why I realized the zubat line is really good, even if its shiny coloration is not.
Nothing embodies horror like Golbats gen 1 sprite.

Crobat is amazing, but the only way to get one is to carry around a Golbat for what feels like an eternity until its friendship gets high enough.
I remember training a couple of Golbats and wondering why they just wouldn't evolve despite constant grinding. Once they finally evolved, I was just burnt out. Now whenever I see a Golbat, I associate it with feelings of exhaustion.

If you see the animation for Golbat for the Pokémon Stadium game(N64) you will definitely hear the "I vant to suck yer blood!" with the armenian(?) accent.
It's _supposed_ to be a Wallachian/Transylvanian/Romanian accent, but in all honesty it's just a Vampire accent.

That does make sense. Small flying animals need to beat their wings quickly, big flying animals would waste tons of energy if they did that. Contrast a little sparrow flitting around an alley to a bird of prey circling overhead.

Crobat is one of my top 3 pokemon and although golbat is definitely least fav of this line, I do have to say after getting zubats in every game I played, golbat kinda grows on you.
Atleast when my normie friends ask me about this line, I can tell them yes, those are feet on Golbat instead of the usual no, those aren't feet on zubat they're tails.

Yeah golbat is way silly to my taste too and when I got to see crowbar I thought it was genius and incredible, I wanted one but never played the game that had it
