Girafarig is a giraffe because it's a pun in Japanese, it's Japanese name "キリンリキ" or "Kirinriki" is literally just the japanese words for giraffe and telepathy, it's a giraffe because it's name is giraffe telepathy because you can spell the word telepathy like giraffe backwards. This pun doesn't work in literally any other language so we're left with just spelling giraffe twice
Wow, these are excellent reviews, if only I knew what to do to see more shorts and where to go for longer, in depth videos…
23:27 shout out to shiny catherine who is currently releasing daily shorts on trying to evolve shiny dunsparces into a three segment dudunsparce. She's at 169 2 segment dudunsparces at the time of this writing and her sanity is at the "creating a remix of gourmet race using her sounds dissapointment." Stage
Edit: she got it 299 dunsparce in
I was gonna see If anyone talked about it
Hoothoot actually has two legs, he just stands on one leg. There are certain animations in the games where it shows a hoothoot with its legs apart
i love the animations where you can see it switch feet as it hops! i think the pokemon stadium model did that
New Snap has a specific quest to get a photo of both legs, which is cute.
And nobody talking about skit in detective Pikachu first game. Pity
I want you to know that I caught the one-frame cut-in gag and it did make me laugh. Good one!
Wait what, there was a one frame gag? I don't have the best eyes, do you have a timestamp?
@@Iamthecrazyone its a picture of barry b benson during the celebi section! i dont have the exact timestamp but youll be able to catch it
@@juneparly I'll have to go back and find it
@@juneparly Holy cow, I had to have blinked at the worst possible time. It seems pretty obvious now, but maybe it's just cause I was clued in lmao. Thank you though, I'm glad I went back to catch it, it's pretty funny.
I fell away from Pokemon about gen 4, so I had no idea that Galarian Corsola or Cursola existed until I watched this. Props to Pokemon for being that assertive with their environmental message.
same, 100.
They also have these smogmogs looking interesting
Hopip-Cat
Skiploom-Dog
Jumpluff-Friend :)
I have a degree in Horticulture and you’re telling me I JUST NOW learned the Hoppip line represents the Dandelion life cycle?!
how... did you not see that? jumpluff is literally the puffball stage
@@ivybennett2274tbf I cannot think of the last time anyone acknowledged Skiploom’s existence
You manage to pronounce almost every Pokémon name slightly different than how everyone else pronounces it. I swear every time I see what the next Pokémon you’re gonna review is I’m like: okay how is he gonna pronounce this thing’s name.
the reason gen 2 designs are that very simple is because of the anime in purpose to save the most money as possible in animation iirc. Later Sugimori on gen 3 would go all out on designs bringing more details to each pokemon's body
That explains why they got the front legs of stantler so wrong🥲
As i am studying now for my master degree in marine sciences, i want to add a bit of info on corals after what skyen said in corsola section: not only is climate change, but with the heat there was an abnormal growth in the population of a little thing of nightmares called thorncrown starfish that, unfortunately eats A LOT of the coral polyps, speeding up the bleaching. Fun fact these nightmare fuel starfish are represented in pokemon by Mareanie and Toxapex
Unown being made to be some sort of semi-sentient psychic spirit pokemon with some relation to Arceus and some influence over space/time/reality is by far the biggest glow up of the games and media in general
Yeah but it actually happened really fast. Of course Arceus didn't exist until gen 4 but Unown got their reality warping powers in the third movie between the original Gold/Silver and Crystal releases.
Two down. Seven to go.
Would be eight, but we know Arceus is going to fly by pretty quick with us looking at the alt forms at the same time.
Keep up the wonderful work as always Skyen. ^__^
We’ll just throw the Legends:Arceus into Gen 9
Actually looking at the dex and the only thing in Arceus that could be covered is Enamorus and even then Enamorus could be put together with the other genies.
I think the incorporation of the Jungian Shadow is a good angle to explain why Girafarig is based on a giraffe. In my opinion, Girafarig's shorter neck symbolizes immaturity, because Girafarig is at the moment unable to reconcile with it's shadow and only after incorporating this element into it's own persona, the Girafarig will reach mental maturity and become a much stronger pokemon(and individual)
21:48 - Pineco is not actually a pinecone, it's a bagworm moth made to look like a pinecone. In real life the cocoon of an Evergreen Bagworm looks closer to Pineco than it does to Forretress, which is why I was always confused as to how they were related or why it became a steel-type in the first place (instead of, you know, a moth). In my opinion, they did it much better with Burmy (who actually does turn into a moth), and I think comparing Pineco and Burmy is a great way to contrast design philosophy from early gen Pokemon to later Gen when they had more to work with (i.e. designing for Game Boy Color vs. designing for Nintendo DS).
also, i totally read Pineco's face with a big nose and a moustache, real grumpy old man vibes. I love Pineco.
I feel like Lugia deserved at least some mention of XD GoD's Shadow Lugia. That thing did what no other pokemon had done up to that point or honestly since, it was menacing and unnatural. Like "Cypher, what have you done to this majestic creature?!" It truly embodied everything that the games try to tell us is wrong with shadow pokemon without breaking genre conventions. This XD-001 the Edgehog monster is still clearly Lugia, it's still a pokemon, but damn if it doesn't look like it'll beat you up and steal your freight ship.
I love this but I’ll be forever sad you never reviewed Overqwil
The chikorita slander continues 😔
As it should (sorry Bayleef)
@@Angelo_MS Bayleef deserves to be between a more distinct predecessor and a more interesting conclusion.
@@timothymclean Lets hope the next Legends give her a proper form.
I'll always associate that line with Team Fourstar's nuzlocke of Souj Silver. They absolutely hated their starter so much...at first. By the end they loved that dumb dinosaur so much that one of them named his real dog after him.
I’m with you, it’s sad to see a world with so much hate
“I don’t know anyone who would be excited by hoppip”
You don’t know the right people, I know people who are delighted by Hoppip.
Oh, hey! It’s all those shorts I’ve already watched. Time to watch them again
If they'd just kept the spacing between Skarmory's blade like wings and kept the red color of the lower wings the design could look really good in 3D I think.
Noctowl will always be one of my favorite bird pokemon.
I am excited for Gen 3 of these, because it has the first generation I played as a kid, and the generation with many of my favourite pokemon, including my absolute favourite Grovyle
6:04 this is something that I notice and appreciate. I'm incredibly afraid of centipedes, yet I like Centiskorch enough to have had it on Sword team (Scolipede is cool too). Im really impressed that Game Freak was able to do something like that
I got the Muppet references. A Snubble could totally stand in for Waldorf 😁
i still cannot believe the disrespect towards chikorita >:( ((((((((
Hey T B Skyen, if you see this i have one question. You manage to pack so much detail into each minute, and I'm curious: how long does it take on average to plan out each individual pokemon short?
An hour or so, usually
@@TBSkyen That blew my estimates out of the water! I was ready to be impressed by 10-20 minutes of dedication squeezed into 1/10th the time, but wow! Btw, thanks for all your videos, you are the only UA-camr that's managed to hold my attention throughout a series :)
*sees Corsola, immediately registers the imminent existential dread to come*
I just realized the mareep line balck lines are probably a nod to resisters.
I've always thought chicorita looked intentionally like a pair the fruit.
Chikorita is a pear🍐for me.
The Chikorita line is perfectly designed. The last powder based Grass starter. Meganium has a gender difference. I like walking around with it. It might be the "worst" but it is my favorite starter of Jhoto.
HootHoot actually has 2 legs, according to its dex entry in Gold, Stadium 2, Leafgreen etc, "It always stands on one foot. It changes feet so fast, the movement can rarely be seen."
I guess Overqwil can get eff’d, then.
39:50 they also learned how the legs of deers work here. Girafarig and stantler have their legs wrong and it hurts so much😭
I'm 100% sure the hoppit line was only designed to be background pokemon to fill up nature in pokemon movies
THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE
I'm surprisd you didn’t bring up the fact that Granbull is definitely taking a page out of the stereotypical bully look. Which makes sense as its a bull dog. You get the impression that its trying it's hardest to look tough and intimidating which makes it's pink colourscheme and general doggy cuteness all the more noticeable.
TBSkyen idk if this will be seen by anyone but the design of Azumarill actually has to do with the moon believe it or not. Both eggs and rabbits are connected to the moon in Japanese culture. Specifically the fairy type seems to be based in being this sort of ethereal type of being connected to the moon. If you look at all of the previous gen Pokémon that got fairy upgrades, they tend to be either egg or moon associated (azumarill, clefairy, Togekiss). From my research this may be the connection between and the core themes of these Pokémon’s designs. Azumarill specifically is basically confirmed to be a sort of moon bunny (it gets the ability huge power, which essentially works as a deep-cut pun on the concept of rabbits making mochi on the moon, which is a popular Japanese legend), so it is quite likely that the egg theming is actually moon symbolism. This is probably also the case with the Togepi line. Basically: rabbits, eggs, fairies= weird mystical/supernatural beings from the moon
Hoppip is cat-like because its Japanese name is sort of a pun: Hanekko, probably inspired from the word for jumping (haneru), and roots (nekko). Incidentally neko is also the word for cat.
0:42: If I don't see it next to Bayleef, I usually forget it's a stage 3 evolution.
10:55: I can think of some reasons a rabbit could be the mascot for the Pokémon generation that introduced breeding, but that's probably not what the designers had in mind...
21:35: If Pokémon ever does a "Persona for kids" game, it should star a Girafarig.
27:35: Which probably also explains why Pokémon is a game about catching _and then fighting_ weird critters.
34:40: Octillery is still the first octopus pokemon, and there are still only ~3 of those. So I am fond of this terrible Pokemon. (Remoraid...less so.)
43:43: I'd argue it works well in its role of a...surrogate dream dad? in that one movie. Mostly because of the moustache and "sideburns," which are the most defining design elements to me.
Though, yeah, the spiky cloud things on its back are a bit...ill-fitting to that role. And most roles aside from its original one.
Nah, monkeys are the breeding fanatics in Japanese culture
44:52 I swear I was haering things but no you actually used Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult during Tyranitar's section, cool detail
Shuckle is my favorite too and I believe it is based off a slime mold of sorts that lives inside rocks but it is mixed with turtle visuals, the "Sh" reminding us of shell and "le" like the end of turtle
Yes! I have been waiting for this. Now I can watch all of the first two gens all at once!
Ok the part where you talk about Corsola was incredible. Great vid.
I love the description of Totodiles line. Every Gen 2 run I picked Totodile. 2nd best Starter of all time and very friend-shaped!
I'm confused why he talked about Pokémon like Ursaluna and Sneasler during the Ursaring and Weavile shorts, but not Overqwil during the Qwilfish Short
Also the mane of Entei is to look like the smoke that came from the Fire
I've always loved Ho-oh's theme.
Hey TB, i was wondering what your plan is for dexes like Platinum where you cover the "new evolutions" a few generations earlier like Gliscor and Magnezone! Do you think this will make those generations take less time overall?
He already covers future evolutions
"Do not underestimate the unrivaled destructive power of the giraffe" -Square Ussop
Yanma line is cool to me I think the mask on it and it’s curved in arms looking like a fighter pilot is cool, then it later evolves into a straight up helicopter
26:48 That "just a little guy" line sounded awfully lot like something that the folk at Drawfee show would say.. Could there be a little hidden reference?
I like your professor OC
Bonsly is actually pronounced “bonz-lie”, which is a play on words of bonsai and lie, a lie of a bonsai if you will. I feel that not many people pick up on that because it’s horribly spelled for it’s pronunciation. (Note that the pronunciation in the anime varies, I’ve seen clips of it being pronounced bahn-zlee and being pronounced bahn-zlie, I just think it makes more sense that the play on words one is the real one, even if the spelling doesn’t aid it.)
It takes a true Pokemon master to use Dunsparce for more than the first gym. I think I got one into the mid-30s before I eventually gave up, and I consider myself quite the trooper for that.
Ooh this edit is really cohesive, I love it !
Chickorita looks like a pear! 🍐I like it myself
I dont know why but Octillery always was such a fun pokemon to me even though it looks like just an octopus
You skipped Overqwil, that guy helped me a ton during my PLA playthrough! I'm not huge on its design but I have a soft spot for it regardless.
I love Overquil. Named mine Dodoria.
I will forever see weavile as weawile now and you're to blame.
Excellent all-round, but was not expecting the Relm reference! What a great comparison.
good stuff lookin forward to gen 3
Gliscor isn't a Muppet. Not abstract and weird enough.
Rules for making successful design based on this video: Blob
Hi Skyen, love your content both here and on your shorts channel.
I am writing to ask your opinion on the video that introduces Swain, playing during the loading screen before logging into wild rift.
I know is an odd and specific question but I find it very uncanny valley and quite weird and I would love to hear your opinion on it
Commenting for algorithm boost, I've really enjoyed these!
listen, when i was a kid, hoppip and its line were THE SHIT. I used them every time bc they were so cute!!!!
Ladien is based on Pulse Man, from a game of the same name that Game Freak also developed.
the aipom review made me so sad i love him so much 😭😭✋
This is a great video, of course it is. But that bee jumpscare.
I was not at all ready for Galarian Corsola. It is midnight and I just got sucker punched in the gut.
Great Video! Is a Gen 3 review coming?!
10:59 he knew where he was going with that one... lmao
I might be misremembering this, but the reason the designs in Gen 2 are so simple is that the designers were taking into account how easy the Pokémon would be to draw for kids, which is pretty cute
do u plan on making reviews about the paradox pokemons?
i mean, they are, designwise, a new look into the old designs. to me, it would make sense to also talk about flutter mane when talking about misdreavus
Am listening to this as I sort my Pokémon cards.
Have you done a Generation tier list that you find more appealing and such?
47:59 I saw what you did there... I almost couldn't pause it even going x0.25 but I got it! you just earned yourself a sub lol, is that The Bee Movie?
Man I loved those short! I'm not 100% sure but I think I watched every single one of them!
Question you don't need to answer: Are you interested or even planning on doing a similar rating format on Pokemon trainers? Those are known for their fashionable and heavily themed character design, right?
I think he'll see Conquest and start drooling
“Ha Ha, it’s your old pal Shuckle. Good old Shuckle”
Nearly a year out of date? Oh well.
I feel the need to assert that many of Gen 2's designs, and each following generation for that matter, reflect and bring attention to it's new mechanics and ideas.
Hoothoot is the best example, IMO; its nocturnal inspiration, and the gears and clock hands for eyelashes and eyebrows all bring attention to the day/night cycle (i.e. passage of time) introduced in Gen 2.
Umbreon is similar, contrasting its counterpart eeveelution by evolving during the night instead of the day. Beyond that though, Umbreon also bears the new Dark type, countering Espeon's Psychic type, as if to say "Hey, we realized Psychic was a little too good, so here's a tool to handle it." And while most Dark types showcase their type identity through a sense of mischief or sneakiness, Umbreon literally and uniquely represents Darkness itself; a lack of light, the harsh and inescapable veil of night, again reinforced by its evolution requirements. The bright rings on its body resemble light peeking through, trying in futility to pierce that veil, while Umbreon's quiet yet confident countenance remains unbothered; it knows full well that there is no true escape from The Darkness which it represents.
Conversely, Umbreon's bright bandings and warm red eyes may also reflect the friendship requirements for its evolution; a reminder of its companionship. You have earned your Umbreon's love and affection, and it wants you to know that you will always be able to find your trusty companion, who will always be there to guide you through the darkest of nights.
I am blessed or perhaps cursed to really like irl bugs of all kinds including spiders. I dont yhink mandible bug mouths are horrifying theyre awesome, plus they have natural armour, and armour is always cool. if anything us mammals have more weird stuff going on. Have you seen an aye aye? Freaky.
I’ve been thinking about this for years…
In regard to Delibird, I wonder if it was originally supposed to be pronounced “Deh-lih-bird” (like Delivered), instead of “Deh-Lee-bird”. But once the anime verbalized it, “Deh-lee-bird” stuck, but I awkwardly, hauntingly wonder in the shower if we should be saying “deh-lih-bird” this whole time. 🤣🤣🤣
No thats the vermillion bird of the east
Immediately starting with violence I see…
i had a wobbuffet that i LOVED in... pokemon sword i think?
How come Overqwil was skipped over when all the other cross-gen and regional evos were covered?
You should've mentioned Fluttermane
Why did you use Natu's shiny colours instead of regular? Is it because you like them more?
44:50 - Inspired music chioce! Did you get hit with the strike for this? LOL
TOTODILE SUPREMACY
ON TO GEN 3 YOOOO
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the Natu model in this video is the shiny form.
I've been watching Pokemon since 2005 and Man, I can't be more mesmerized by Ho-oh, the allure and mystery of its sighting in the anime and its possible connection to Ash as Ho-oh knew Ash would become a pokemon master (A Person who has his heart as one woth the pokemon). Design wise too, Ho-oh looks regal and divine, adding to that its lore and then its relation with Ash(although that went nowhere due to poorly written JN)
Gligar is based on Alien's Xenomorph
I watch them as they come out and now I get to rewatch all of them sweet also do more one piece I was reading along and I didn't put it down and now I'm in long ring long land and I want to know your opinion on jaya and sky Island
“Woe-bufett”😂😂😂
Did… did you use the shiny sprite for Natu?
47:59
Thank you for removing the adverts at the end of each clip.
These were certainly the opinions I’ve ever heard
