This was me and my husband's song. We've been married 62 years and he's now in hospice. We're separated for the first time in 62 years. But Jerry Butler's make it easy on yourself. Was our song and I like this version The very best I want you to know. I'm 81 now, but I still enjoy listening to it when I'm alone in the dark at night.
I use to go to the same clinic in Chicago as him as a child , we both stayed on the low end / south side and we lived 3 blocks over . He was so surprised I knew his music with me being a child in the 90s . He gave me and autograph and I always ran into him and his wife . Love you my fellow Chicagoan , your music is just everything .
BEAUTIFUL RENDITION of this love song by "The Ice Man" and it moves us to tears...he is still with us at the age of 84 here in Chicago! Carry on. my brother!~
An icon and one of my mentors. I played on several shows with most of the Chicago guys several times, one time with Jerry. I found all of them to be as great as I thought they were...love each and every one of them...lots of love and respect!! Clennis High (guitarist)
Incredible what else can be said about Mr. Butler. He sang with the great Impressions. His voice lingers like poetry. Thanks for posting. This great man never received the recognition he should have.
Jerry Butler was a wonderful R&B singer. He hosted some Doo Wop Specials on PBS a few years back and sang this song for the program. He was great. To me, the definitive version of this Bacharach/David torch is the Walker Brothers. What a voice. I was a teenager then; their cover can still bring me to tears.
@@uschimyers A few years back he hosted a couple of those TJ Doo Wop Specials on PBS. On one of them, he sang one of his hits, I think "Precious Love." Whenever they reran an old show, TJ would come on to announce which performers had since died. I loved those shows. I would watch each installment 14 times in repeat.
I so much like Jerry Butler. Some of his songs are, your precious love, I stand accused, I'm telling you, he will break your heart,, I've been trying, I need to belong to someone. Just to name a few. Check them out. What a voice. Peace and Love, Everyone.
This is a great version of a great song. I found out about Jerry Butler from a Walker Brothers version of this song on UA-cam..They were on the radio a lot when I was younger, so it's the version I'm most familiar with. I know many artists recorded this great Bacharach and David song, but I wonder if Jerry Butler was the first. Doesn't really matter. Great song, great version, great man. New drinking game, take a shot each time I said great. Thanks for the post.
Yes , Bert Bachrach wrote this song for Connie Steven's but it was a total flop. Dionne Warwick cut a demo of it but didnt actually record it until 1970. Jerry Butler made it a number one hit first.....in 1962...this is concert version from TV show "Soul" which was on PBS in 70. You can hear his original recording on you tube. It's totally awesome. This one is more soulful and slower version. I really love this deeper voiced more mature Jerry Butler version. Pure slow soul! Jerry Butler was fabulous even in his very senior years when he quit singing professionally. He has youtubes singing this while in his 80's....never lost that voice even 50 years later. Great Great voice. The " Ice Man" was and will always forever be ! 🎶🎤⭐🎶 I also found 25 munites more of this performance on youtube.
@@chichibud31 someone earlier posted in comments this was a TV appearance. Reread comments. It may tell you more. I'll see if this was on album but doubt it iI did find 25 minutes more of this performance on youtube.
@@nancywood9531 welll the original has a 1950's, early 60's big band sound to it, almost. This has that late 60's, 70's slower, soulful vibe. It just sound's so different from the original i'm thinking there is a studio version, somewhere. Just saying.
@@chichibud31 I know this PBS soul 70's sound program in which Jerry Butler did a slower soul version of " Make it Easy on yourself" is beautiful ...however I don't believe he ever re- recorded it on an album in soul version. His original recording was in 1962. Bert Bachrach wrote it for Connie Steven's but it was a flop. Jerry's was big number 1 hit. You may have to play this youtube soul version and tape it with your phone or recorder for your own copy at your fingertips. Or just enjoy it on youtube. Sorry, but I guess you can pull up Jerry's albums....read the Playlist on each one to see if he re- recorded it years later in 70-80's on a soul album. Good luck. 🎶⭐🎶
Does anyone have an idea who these 4 beautiful ladies singing b ackup are? They move in such unison and are as sexy as Jerry's soulful voice. Love love love this version on the TV Soul show in early 7o's. 💞🎶🌟🤗
I think Brenda Lee Eager is the first or closest lead singer to Jerry Butler. She sang several duets with Jerry Butler.including "aint understanding mellow" and close to you. The background singers are indeed very talented, with song bird voices and they are into their work. Such talent and class
Brenda Lee Eager is definitely the first one. She sang Aint understanding Mellow and Close to you among others on duets with Jerry Butler among others. The backgrounds singers are really putting their thing down. That happens when you are with other people who are good at their craft. Also Jerry Butler had a younger sister who sometimes sang and toured with him
Burt always said his favorite was Alfie. I was surprised. I saw that movie three times when I was 18. The theme was sung by Cher. That last scene with the little dog and Alfie was heartbreaking. Add Cher over the credits, what a moment. I think Make It Easy On Yourself is up there with his best.
What in the world is going on.... if he and Gladys knight did a song or had a child together, man , I don't know. Does anyone pay detailed attention to background singers? I do.These sistas are gettin' down along with the band on that intro. The drums are demanding and gentle, the guitar makes me smile and the bass moves in like it's shy or almost afraid. GOD BLESS US ALL ESPECIALLY THE UNFORTUNATE.
I also wondered who the backup singers were. Aside from having beautiful voices, they are so elegant, and their synchronized swaying is like watching gentle ocean waves.
Would love to see a video of Jerry performing I'm your mechanical man. Hope someone can post it. I know I saw it about 100 years ago live maybe soul train?
Old school,yet still timeless.

in the ( 212 ) we called him The Ice Man could not mistake that brother's voice
Covered by many but no one did it as well as the soulful voice of Jerry Butler.
Jerry Butler's vocal delivery is superb! He is a true music legend.
No other voice like this!!!!!@
Absolutely stunning! His ability to emote is jaw-dropping. I was moved to tears.
You too?

Tried my hardest to find the single or album with this version, to no avail.

The Ice Man. One of, if not the, most underrated soul singers ever.
Beautiful
I would have loved to hear or heard Mr. Jerry Butler and Ms. Iconic Dionne WARWICK team up as a live duet on this classic!!
Bacharach and David, and Bacharach and pretty much anybody else, were fantastic songwriters.
Oh yes. They were GREAT
Not sure "anybody else" could write as well as Bacharach & David.
I don't knew that superb live version of a song of Burt Bacharach by Jerry Butler !
This is from the TV show SOUL! that used to air on PBS. If you have a Roku and can get the SHOUT Factory channel, you can watch the whole show
You can also watch these classic episodes on Tubi.
Wish you would post the whole Soul Show. I could take more of this....anytime. 🎵🎶🎵
