To be fair...Justice for all album is probably Lars best achievement with some odd turn arounds and breakdowns, if he hasn't played these songs for a while i can see him having trouble, its hard enough trying to remember all the little breakdowns on guitar too with the songs being around the 10 min mark.

Thing is they haven't played it since 89 or so. I am a musician myself and if you don't play it it's easily forgotten, I haven't played my song for 5 years and had to remind myself all things I wrote, so I don't blame him for not remembering all stuff out there.
EddieMachetti ProTools is a computer recording program (a Digital Audio Workstation or “DAW”) created by digidesign/Avid Audio that didn’t exist as an alternative to recording studio analog/digital tape mediums until the late ‘90s. Every Metallica album since SKOM has been done on ProTools, I think. And Justice For All was not done on ProTools. Nothing like it existed back then. Takes were edited together by cutting up reels of tape with a razorblade and sticking desired chunks in place on other takes’ cut-up tapes. The whole Some Kind of Monster album was edited together from fragments of songs using ProTools, and in the Death Magnetic video you see ProTools screens on their monitors a lot, including one scene where Lars is telling the engineer how he wants the takes edited together. While some kind of ProTools ancestor program called “Sound Designer” existed from 1984, it was not suitable for multitrack band recording and was more of a MIDI application. Many recording studios did use digital tape formats in the late 80s and 90s; this was tape that gave a sound quality more comparable to what computer recording would eventually provide (no hiss or generational high-end attenuation etc) The thing that sucks about digital formats is that they’re proprietary. In the future they won’t be able to remix the last bunch of Metallica albums to make them sound up to date or better by then-modern standards like we can with multitrack tapes from the ‘60s-‘90s now, because ProTools will be on version 87 or whatever (if it still exists) so if it’s even able to access the sessions then surely at least all the plug-ins and shit won’t work. Whereas in a Mad Max post-apocalyptic universe, they’ll still be able to do a 100th anniversary remix of Sgt Pepper.
EddieMachetti “protools, editing... its all the same shit” No it isn’t. My whole point is that you seem to think “protools” is fancy recording studio jargon for “editing”. It is not. It is the name of what you chilluns now call an “app”. It replaced mixing desks going into tape machines for multitrack recording. That’s it. It made editing easier and so many people started to rely on it to get perfect performances out of imperfect playing: that’s why people associate it with edited together takes. Recording studios phased over from analog and digital tape formats through the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. No ‘80s bands had ProTools, no ‘80s version of it was even called ProTools (that name was first used in ‘93) and way up until the late ‘90s it was only good for 12-bit synth w/drum machine music. Stuff that sounded like video games. I wanted to help you with your little misunderstanding at first but you seem like a real weird little piece of shit so I won’t make that mistake again.
When you’re so mentally incompetent that you need it explained to you that when you haven’t played a song the way you did it in the studio SINCE playing it in the studio 30+ years ago you might need to relearn it.
Affan Ahmad He wouldn't have to relearn his own creations if he would practice once in a while. Maybe he should spend some of that napster money on drumming lessons.
Jonatann Peigne ofc you have to relearn shit after 20 years of never playing it once and LOL youre still on about napster? step into 2015 with the rest of us pls
trickznmix Having written a song, doesn't mean you know it better. In their situation, they play and write so much different stuff, that a lot of songs are just left behind after recording them. I saw an interview with Mustaine, where he met up with a fan, that basically knew some of their songs better, than he did, because the songs were wrote on the go in the studio, released, and then never revisited. Fans have the time to go through a catalog of a bands songs, and learn them, while a band with a big repertoire will most of the time only focus on the material that they actually play live. And yeah, having written it 20 years earlier doesn't really help either.
Damn I can't imagine how hard that must be. Even harder for Lars to think "Damn I can't believe I'm having a tough time playing a song I was able to perform easily 20 years ago" Good on him though, still one of my favorite drummers, Lars.
Lars can play this song anytime. He still plays it in concert. I know, I've seen him on the World Magnetic Tour. THE PROBLEM IS that he had to motion capture this, so he had to time it perfectly. Asking him to do it out of the blue is hard, so he had to "listen & learn" to get the rhythm. Stop hating the guy. I don't get why people call him a bad drummer...is it because he's not fast enough? Or because he can't make good beats or something? I think he's fine. He's one of my favorites, too.
I'm a drumming student I`m learning how to play drumms I cannot believe how people are not musicians talk and judge so badly about Lars he has much more experience than those ignorants and he has the right to make a mistake he`s not a God and he`s a very good drummer obviously there are other drummers better than him but he plays very well and he`s my mentor to me I saw him on the Mefallica show this last wenesday in Quito, he`s georgous¡
He literally says this was going to happen in the video 😂 “this is going on youtube isn’t it” Thing is, Lars has admitted he’s not as good as he used to be due to decreased stamina from age and drug abuse, plus a lot of songs on this album were edited together after separate song parts were recorded on their own. So even when he wrote this he didn’t have to play it all the way through. This is also a rarified situation to be playing drums in. They’re muted which makes them feel different, he’s wearing a motion capture bodysuit, and someone is counting down from 3 and pressing play... and it’s coming over speakers, not headphones. Lars would count this song in if he was really playing it live, and be wearing in-ear monitors. This would be tricky for a lot of people to do for their own song, not just aged Lars.
I'm a drummer, and i've seen them this 21st live, and let me tell you, contrary to what most people believe, he is an amazing drummer Of course during the justice era, he's style was doing all these crazy fills and crazy beat changes, nowadays he just plays more relaxed and improvises a lot He still does an amazing job on songs like one, battery, all nightmare long, which aren't easy songs
I'm a drummer myself so I can't really hate on Lars for this. Also a Metallica has made 9 albums I'm their career and half the time they don't even play most of And Justice For All. Mostly just One and Dyers Eve as far as I know. So stop hating on Lars everyone.
Dude, theres a reason we have yt full of lars urlich fails. I have played drums myself. It is not hard, when you practice and got "it" you will be good. Lars doesn't practice & he lacks talent.
I really don't like how people who have done absolutely nothing with their so called "talent" can talk crap about a man who played the drums for such a legendary rock band for almost 3 decades. Come on guys just shoooooosh and enjoy the metal. Ya big jerks.
Daniel Larsen : You're so right and I totally agree with you ! Lars and Dave Mustaine are ok now but some anti-Lars think they are most intelligent that this gods... Ariel : Stop living in the past, there is more than ten years that MetallicA and Napster works together
Half of the people that comment aren't even musicians. And I know for a damn fact that Lars isn't all that great, he's good but people just like to make a huge deal out of him because he plays with a good band
"Half of the people that comment aren't even musicians." Your crystal ball told you that? "he's good but people just like to make a huge deal out of him because he plays with a good band" Look, if he wasn't making such a huge deal out of himself, thinking he is the shit, while investing zero effort into practice and getting better at what he does for a living, people wouldn't make such a huge deal out of him.
This is like a dream where you're all of a sudden the drummer for Metallica, and you know the songs by heart, but then you're sitting there trying to play the song and you just can't play it right.
I know a lot of drummers, this isn't at all hard to do. Lars is an average drummer at best. I love metallica, I love the 89 concerts the most, that had some really good drumming, Lars has let his skill slip over the years. It's distracting when you see Metallica or hear them even on CD, even with editing these days. Lars just isn't that passionate about drums, not enough to keep improving over time. It's not an age thing, look at Danny Carey from Tool, the guy is over 50 years old and his feel just gets better over time, or at the very least keeps a very high standard.
The guy's a machine, he knows the songs all right because he performed them so many times, not just shows but the many rehearsals, tuning room sessions and the years they take to pull out albums. Here, trying to get into it without the band, with this ridiculous costume and those guys counting down like they're back in the studio, with the tune being played on a radio somewhere in that room, that has to be confusing at first but he finally gets it done after a few false starts. No big deal.
When you've got 175 or so songs under your belt, some of which you havn't played in years and your asked to just remember it verbatim, it can be difficult to just pull it out, especially songs from the Justice album like The Shorest Straw... getting the intro correct in that many tries isn't bad really, it's not a song that they do everyday...
He's actually good in the way that he listened to it just one time and got it perfect when in the other 4 takes he could hardly get the first 4 seconds right.
if you play this song often the rhythm will be remembered but if you havnt played this song for years like he had on this vid its a really hard and weird rhythm to remember. So i dont blame him either but i bought the quebec magnetic blu ray dvd where they played this song and he nailed it perfectly. :)
The intro rhythm for this is deceptively hard and I'm not surprised he's struggling. It starts with a pickup bar (anacrusis) with a single 16 note on the upbeat leading into 2 eighth notes on the downbeat. With that in mind, everything that follows feel crooked. It's simple enough with a click. Without a click however, it's tough to get the hang of because there are no other instruments playing in the spaces so you can't get a reference of where you are. You need really good timing to pull it off.
@kabaara the drum set sounds like that because they put muting drumheads and tightened cymbals, since they're just recording video and not audio, they firgured it didn't have to be loud
Lars was obviously never the best drummer in history but his emotion and heart in playing was genius...His creativity made him the drummer he'll always be..
Anyone who gets on Lars for forgetting the song has never written their own songs. You forget how they go after a while not playing them. I think at the time of recording this video, Metallica hadn't played that song live for a long time. Cut the guy a break 😅
Just for a note, those aren't "dummy" cymbals. It's like most bands do when recording a music video. They've stacked 2 cymbals on top of one another, because it kills all the resonance of the cymbal.
The reason why Lars had a hard time playing the song is that they haven't played for 9 years at that moment. Imagine you writing a 7 minute long speedy drum track then don't play or practice it for 9 years and then get told to play it without ANY fails.
The issue is Lars, as the drummer, is used to timing the band into the song, yet here he has no countdown, and has no idea when the music will start (nor get the tempo perfect from the first few notes), so it will be difficult for him to time the first notes correctly, and keep time from there. Once into the song, he should be fine, its just starting the song. This is the same reason playing along with a CD or MP3 is hard, because its hard to know when the music starts.
If you've ever seen him playing live, you'll know that he's improvisational. All the songs have changed over the years from the old recordings. I'm not surprised that he had to relearn the old stuff.
When metallica hears anything on and justice for all, they start to cry.they can't believe they made such an awesome, flawless perfect recording, lars simply could never drum like that again,he is to lazy now, although death magnetic had some very bright spots and I think he is capable.
i know why this happened. it's because Lars(he said it himself) just has his moments when he just feels the song and the tempo and he's like ''we need to this now, i'm feelin it" and it's just one oportunity. i think this intro was one of the case.
why does someone try to drag lars down with silly comments that he's no good drummer. everyone is not perfect... everyone gets old..... everyone loses its glitters... but lars will always be one of the guys that contributed greatly to metal music... he's one of the 4 guys that perfected metal and that is metallica... sure they aged and has'nt been on their perfect form since... hands off to metallica. theyre one of the reasons why i love metal..... thanks lars!!!!
Even Take #5 is wrong. He is hitting "two" when he should be hitting "three." I'm not knocking Lars...not at all. He is my fav drummer...just wondering if anyone else noticed this. However, after he got past the intro, it looks like he nailed it for the rest of the song!
Guys you have to remember, this is a freaking Metallica video. Not Slayer, not Megadeth. Metallica. Please stop arguing about Lars and his capabilities. Lars is (in my opinion) a great drummer and he just likes to have fun. There is no point talking about other drummers in a Metallica video. It's so annoying to see comments that aren't even relevant about the video. That is all. Long live Metallica!!!
The thing is, he's being playing for so long, and it's his own song. It shouldn't take this many tries. The timing is easy as pie compared to most progressive metal. Wowza.
Drummers are the ones who provide the tempo for the band. Trying to match up the tempo straight away from a recording will require a few attempts. Almost no drummer will get the tempo correct from a recording unless they are set into the tempo to begin with (or provide the tempo).
Why didn't they give him a click to play with in the mix? Normally, when you do playback you at least have a count-in. This can't be compared to his normal playing with a band.
@LouTheMetalhead mate if you read the annotations in the beginning the last time they played shortest straw was on February 9th, 1997. if you wrote a song back in the 80's and haven't played it since, do you honestly think you can remember everything? they did other songs too that overshadowed what he'd remembered doing with shortest straw, it happens to everyone, me you and even lars is no exception.
i think its pretty funny how people thinks he is the worst drummer ever, when he was the one who started and created one. Of the most succesful and best bands in the music history and how can he be the worst, when he back in the 80``s was seen as the best drummer in the world, and i know he is not the best anymore, but he knows his shit and he is the one who hold metallica together, when it comes to get the concerts up and running and getting all that stuff readdy for the tours.
I have to agree... this happens to me sometimes, too. 1 month of not practicing a song at ALL is enough to cause a lapse in memory. Source: I play bass in a band.
@XxZero97531xX I see what you mean, but this isn't a song Metallica plays every night. And they need good timing because that is the footage going into the game.
what i hate about when people hate on lars is that theyre comparing him to drummers today who are not his age, 48. how can you compare someone like shannon lucas (who is 27), when their styles are totally different, and lars is older and has worn down his physical abilities...jeeze people if your going to compare him to todays drummers pick a good comparison
if I'm not mistaken, they are playing the original song from the album now is a little big different that Lars is gonna do the same exact performance that he did in the album, I think that why he fail the intro so many times :P
Don Taylor, hard to believe, not because I'm a fan (of Lars nooo) but because they're a band, it seems unlikely that they prefer to record with other drummer. Is this a normal thing for metallica or it was only on the Black Album thing? Thanks for the answer.
To be fair...Justice for all album is probably Lars best achievement with some odd turn arounds and breakdowns, if he hasn't played these songs for a while i can see him having trouble, its hard enough trying to remember all the little breakdowns on guitar too with the songs being around the 10 min mark.
I completely agree. I love lars on justice, and he probs hasnt focused on that.
Actually Shortest Straw is 6 mins or so in length. And HE WROTE the fucking drum parts. How the fuck does he look like he's hearing it for the 1st time? He's so sloppy at times. And don't get me wrong, I love everything he does (at least in the studio, with the exception of St. Anger).
Many recording studios did use digital tape formats in the late 80s and 90s; this was tape that gave a sound quality more comparable to what computer recording would eventually provide (no hiss or generational high-end attenuation etc)
The thing that sucks about digital formats is that they’re proprietary.
EddieMachetti “protools, editing... its all the same shit”
No it isn’t.

My left ear loved this video
yes becuase we watch videos with our ears
Karrotz Witte well you don't hear with your eyes either
My right ear also did
When you need to learn a song you wrote
to be fair they hadn't played the song for a while at this point
When you’re so mentally incompetent that you need it explained to you that when you haven’t played a song the way you did it in the studio SINCE playing it in the studio 30+ years ago you might need to relearn it.
Harto Korpela It’s not like they never play it.
yeah out of about 150 that they have done over their career and probably one of the toughest in terms of drumming
HAHAHAHAHAHA damn so true
"just let me learn it" ...Lars, you wrote it.... -_-
yea...20 years prior. Dont worry, he relearned the song, they perform it a lot more now
Affan Ahmad He wouldn't have to relearn his own creations if he would practice once in a while. Maybe he should spend some of that napster money on drumming lessons.

Every musician has to relearn the songs before a tour. It takes mere weeks to forget how to play a song when your repertoire is over 25 songs.
Damn I can't imagine how hard that must be. Even harder for Lars to think "Damn I can't believe I'm having a tough time playing a song I was able to perform easily 20 years ago" Good on him though, still one of my favorite drummers, Lars.
best quote ever "The Day Guitar Hero broke Lars..."
He played it perfectly tonight for the Metallica 40th Anniversary concert!!!
He simplified it like usual
@@Tdrummer888 Not the intro, which is the part he's struggling with in this video
„Perfect“ is relative
To be fair, the shortest straw has the most mindfucky intro of metallica to play.

"its gonna straight to youtube"
I really laughed at that part :D

No I just know how hard it is to play drums. I think I'm good but I'm always working hard.
Dude, theres a reason we have yt full of lars urlich fails. I have played drums myself. It is not hard, when you practice and got "it" you will be good. Lars doesn't practice & he lacks talent.

Don't worry, Lars. I look the exact same way when I play drums: Struggling at first and throwing sticks in the air in rage-quit fashion
which bright spark thought recording these without a click track was a good idea?
It doesn't matter. You can't set a click track to Metallica because Lars is ALWAYS off.
Half of the people that comment aren't even musicians. And I know for a damn fact that Lars isn't all that great, he's good but people just like to make a huge deal out of him because he plays with a good band

Hey, Tantara! Love you guys, your album preview was the greatest thing I've ever heard.
I think Lars Ulrich is living proof that there is no direct correlation between talent and success,
+Mikeoneus dude
+Mikeoneus He was pretty talented back in the day
and you need talent to have success, if its in business or playing drums.
+sadsadsa asadasd Not necessarily, look at Kim kardashian.

only one thing to say to that ...
sad but treu ...
hahaha.... & hahahaha... yes!!!! and he played wrong finally... stupid!!!

You need really good timing to pull it off.
i love how he gets really into it like his face expressions and stuff
sweet vid
to be fair the countdown is just 1
since the song begins in 1/8
It was recorded in studio takes, otherwise, he didn't play the full song all together. Also, when Dyers Eve is played live, he doesn't double bass.
@PIlotrcm This was when they were making Guitar Hero Metallica, he wore it so they could use his movements in the game.
That's right lars, this is going straight to youtube.
So many years behind the drums, and still such a newb!
@kabaara the drum set sounds like that because they put muting drumheads and tightened cymbals, since they're just recording video and not audio, they firgured it didn't have to be loud
its because before this game, the last time he played this song was 10 years ago. But they started playing it again since september 19, 2009
Well that is one of the hardest arrangement for drums after all. \m/
Lars was obviously never the best drummer in history but his emotion and heart in playing was genius...His creativity made him the drummer he'll always be..
I heard they brought in a look alike who had never sat behind a drum kit in his life to do the motion capture. He did it in one take.
Damn right Lars, it is going straight to UA-cam.
"This is going straight to UA-cam, isn't it?"
Yeah, it pretty much did Lars. He still wins anyway.
The reason why Lars had a hard time playing the song is that they haven't played for 9 years at that moment. Imagine you writing a 7 minute long speedy drum track then don't play or practice it for 9 years and then get told to play it without ANY fails.
Much like all of us getting old. We hate it when we cant do things like we used to when we were young. Lars is on that journey with us.
Man, those cymbals sound SSOOO great.
i know why this happened. it's because Lars(he said it himself) just has his moments when he just feels the song and the tempo and he's like ''we need to this now, i'm feelin it" and it's just one oportunity. i think this intro was one of the case.
the shortest straw. he doesnt play this song many times, and this is so progressive.
But finally he can, with double bass included.
If you don't play a song for twelve years, you're bound to forget it
It probably doesn't help that they almost never play this song live.
why does someone try to drag lars down with silly comments that he's no good drummer. everyone is not perfect... everyone gets old..... everyone loses its glitters... but lars will always be one of the guys that contributed greatly to metal music... he's one of the 4 guys that perfected metal and that is metallica... sure they aged and has'nt been on their perfect form since... hands off to metallica. theyre one of the reasons why i love metal..... thanks lars!!!!
sometimes i think that its a drum machine used on And Justice For All album
i love playing this song on drums
Long live Metallica!!!
in his defense it very hard to get the timing down exactly without a click track
whoa you really showed me up on that one, wow I can't believe that you could say something so harsh
They should have a click track of the same tempo of the song so that way he doesn't have to guess when the track starts playing.
Dude I made that comment over 3 weeks ago, it's ancient history.
Lars says: Laughter, Laughter all I hear and see is laughter. xD
"Sorry guys,I've been too many years playing GIMEE FUEEL,GIMME FAAAAAAAH AND EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY,EY,EY,EY"
my left ear loves this
Its understandable he had a hard time at the beginning. There doesn't appear to be a click track to follow prior to the first not being played.
Why didn't they give him a click to play with in the mix?
Normally, when you do playback you at least have a count-in. This can't be compared to his normal playing with a band.
even if you don't like Lars you should have some kind of respect for the guy for having such an influence on the metal-genre
Source: I play bass in a band.
is it just me or does the drums sound awesome at 1:37?
Yes they are. I had a blast with you man, that was great.
that ackward moment when you are way better than your all-time favorite drummer
@XxZero97531xX I see what you mean, but this isn't a song Metallica plays every night. And they need good timing because that is the footage going into the game.
how can he not do it he made it id hate to seem him play that live
what i hate about when people hate on lars is that theyre comparing him to drummers today who are not his age, 48. how can you compare someone like shannon lucas (who is 27), when their styles are totally different, and lars is older and has worn down his physical abilities...jeeze people if your going to compare him to todays drummers pick a good comparison
"You and your bright ideas! This is going straight to youtube!!"
man....the irony.....
That snare still sounds better than the one on St. Anger
that is defo the day that Guitar Hero broke Lars Ulrich!!
if I'm not mistaken, they are playing the original song from the album
now is a little big different that Lars is gonna do the same exact performance that he did in the album, I think that why he fail the intro so many times :P
Don Taylor, hard to believe, not because I'm a fan (of Lars nooo) but because they're a band, it seems unlikely that they prefer to record with other drummer. Is this a normal thing for metallica or it was only on the Black Album thing? Thanks for the answer.
@AndrianScheepers Yea check it out, its titled just Dave Lombardo Drum Clinic "Raining Blood"
If he is dying after recording this for Shortest Straw I dunno how long did it take for him to do Dyers Eve entirely
