Thank you! I switched to using a middle finger fulcrum for german grip about a year ago with good results but that might be giving me trouble now. When practicing faster tempos with french grip, my left hand wants to keep the index finger pretty rigid while the remaining 3 fingers do all the speed work. But I noticed my right (dominant) hand uses all 4 fingers to move the stick together, as you show in this video, and has much better control. I can get both hands to play pretty fast individually, but have not figured out how to use french grip with both hands at the same time for a sustained single stroke roll. I think the rigid index finger on the left side may be the culprit as it tends to lag behind, so I've been searching for a video to confirm that suspicion. Many thanks
@@CameronFleury I did indeed mate, I use a practice pad so the rebound will be a bit different I suspect. I need to find time to keep up with these lessons as I'm sure they're really beneficial, the double bass lessons starting to pay off for sure 🏆
The practice pad definitely has a different feel. Especially if the tension on your drums heads are on the looser side. You can always save these videos into your own playlist and re-watch them at a later time. Great news about the double bass man, glad it's working for you. :)
Been struggling with this for a while, especially my left hand. Just started these exercises but I can definitely see how this will help. Gonna get on it!
How do accents work in French grip? In German or American I think of everything in terms of full down tap and up strokes to play accents. I’m not sure how to apply that concept to French.
I find that using finger motion in french grip gives me a kind of "wiggly" rebound somehow. Like the stick shifts left and right and won't stay smack down the middle where the balance is (although it's probably due to a lack of practice of this particular technique..). I have to say it's much less straining at faster tempos though
It's definitely not the best technique for control, but if you can manage to prevent it, it is beneficial. Try it slow and maybe take a video to see where you might be having issues.
Yeah your channel is great for me because i play drums and Thrash Metal since 1 year and it helps me a lot. The technics to play the snare faster or play double base faster than 8 notes is hard but you do it great. Thank you for your time to show us how do you play this. Thank you from Germany:)
Hey thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write a comment on my video! Glad I could be of any help, and all the best on your drumming journey! Thank-You! Cheers from Canada!
Cool Video! Nice French grip explanation...skilling up the lower fingers and not just the thumb and pointer finger is what I took away from this. Dude, your drum sticks are chafed. Lol.
I am brand new to drumming, and just trying to learn basic hand technique on a pad… Anybody have any advice for consistent issue with not even being able to hold the stick? By this I mean, practicing these kinds of techniques, the stick consistently rolls out of my finger/thumb grip, and I have a hard time holding onto it even when going with very slow pacing, any advice is appreciated
David good point! If you watch most drummers hands they in fact only use the index finger to guide the stick. In this grip it is definitely attainable by using your thumb and middle finger as the fulcrum point!
@@richardpictures I've found that it's definitely doable but without that index finger guidance the stick tends to wobble sideways a lot. Definitely keeps calling my concentration back to the left hand while playing. I'm sure it'll get easier as I play the drums more, though.
is it a bit uncomfortable at first learning this technique on the weaker side..... i am practicing it though getting more and more precise control....but still a bit uncomfortable only a bit,......
@@shelmaryamyamin5734 actually the main problem might be i am not practicing on a regular basis....yeah before i used to but i am going back to my regular drumming habits again ...... everyday i used to practice like 15 mins..........i want to know is it overanalysing or overgeneralizing the motion .....also the main problem might be that my brain is not able to understand some things......can you give me some tips for better precision and control so that atleast i enjoy playing it rather than getting frustruated
@Ajan Das actually im just got starting practicing it and still learning on it .. it might quit so hard and uncomfortable on weaker hand on my left..i begin to seek this kind of technique when i saw some drum covers on jazz ..

Thank you. Most other drum lessons on youtube suck.
Another informative lesson dude, thanks. I can definitely use this qui qui!
Not a problem Mark, did you check out the exercise towards the end?

Nice trick sir
Usually the French grip is quickly overtaken by the German grip with little resistance.
Actually there is/was the French resistance
How much it takes
a month to make you become faster in doing the french grip .thank you for the answer
All depends how you decide to practice this technique. For some people it may be quicker than others.

Hi dude, could you try and brake down the patterns that lars does on dyers eve , i just can't figure it out.
Which part do you seem to be struggling with most?

Is it bad to solely use French grip on the drum kit?
If it helps you express your musical ideas and doesn't cause you any pain then no. Some drummers say it's hard to control, but to each their own.
Ohhh boy thanks
You're quite welcome! Be sure to check out the exercise towards the end of the video.

In other words, the stick rolls (circularly and slides up and down) as I attempt to keep slow singles going

Shit. My brain messed up and now i am confused
So this is push-pull... ?
Not quite! This is more or less utilizing mostly fingers. Push pull is one downward motion. Push down and use the rebound to make another stroke.
@@CameronFleury ok! Thanks for the clarification
