Debunking the Difficulty - Silver Surfer (NES)

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2022
- Silver Surfer is one of those NES games of perceived legendary difficulty, but with a little bit of practice and a levelheaded approach, you can make mincemeat out of this game pretty easily.
Starship Hector has a health bar and is still harder than this game. And then Super R-Type makes this game look like child's play!

It’s not so hard, just run across a WW1 battlefield during a full artillery barrage for a hour and never let so much as a clump of dirt hit you. What’s so hard about that!
What makes it easier is that you can shoot the clumps of dirt before they hit you 😂
@@wokeupinapanic can’t argue with that.
I know!!! It’s just running.
And don't forget to constantly be tapping furiously for an hour without stopping.

I remember once I read a strategy guide for a sidescroller I never owned and the author was like "The last boss is really beefy. Depending on how many powerups you collected this fight will talr between 5 and 10 minutes. If you didn't collect any at all, then prepare to be fighting all night long until the morning."
I don't remember which game though.
a lot of powerup games are like that. one i've experienced personally is the arcade game sidearms. if you are transformed with the weapon you can only get by shooting the powerup a ton of times (star) then the levels are easy and then for the bosses i use the laser which cheeses just about everything. the final boss is either hard and takes a continue or two or easyish easy. if you have the full power up and the lazer then it's easy but still the hardest one in the game. i once beat the game on one quarter and it felt so *#$%ing good when i saw a score of over a million when i destroyed the final boss.
Besides this, maybe Battletoads or Contra? Or any shoot em up game now that I think of it.
Street Fighter 2010?
AVGN: *_I can't touch that RED POT ??_* 😂😂
"Just don't die, it's that easy " best legendary quote ever lol
it almost reminds me of the quote "get gud"
I’ve never known a game that is so hard without power ups. If you die at any time and lose your power ups, it’s miserable.
Gradius as a whole. Late game deaths are minimum a complete level restart just from losing your movement powerups.
Its like there was an unwritten rule in ye olde days that horizontal shmups had to be agonizing to play.
@@MinaAngura Hey, they were still running on Coin-Op logic without considering whether or not there were even any coins to be fished out of players' pockets.

I remember this being the first extraordinarily hard game series it was awesome
Love this series! Ryu is extraordinarily good at making hard games look painless.
maybe not this one though. I could feel that carpal tunnel just watching.
I was a little surprised by the green elephant heads in the final level that are clearly being hung by the skin of their faces while it's slowly being ripped off, exposing their skulls...
It is very difficult in the sense that it is _definitely not_ the kind of game that you just casually beat in a few tries, simply because there are a ton of situations that are all about memorisation - and even when you have memorised every part of the game, you still have to have decent enough reflexes to be able to react to everything. So you could say that it "isn't too bad" from that perspective.
Awesome. This series and the extraordinarily hard games one are my favorites.
I been checking this channel through out the week to see the newest Debunking video. I am glad to see a new video uploaded. LOVE them.

Great series and psyched you actually finish all of the games. That was the one thing that irked my with extraordinarily hard games. Well done!
Most things that kill you in this game are stuff you don't even know are there or are too fast to dodge on reflex. And since death takes away all your power ups pretty much means that you must memorize the entire game.
"it's not hard all you have to do is play the game so much you memorize it"
That's kinda how a lot of NES games were though. You'd play them from the start many, many times before tasting the sweetness of the credits.
Life BEFORE smart phones🤗
Kinda like dragon's lair. Bad choice results in death until you memorize all right choices, its easy.
@@newerest1 You know how many people say this shit unironically? It's infuriating, they really spend hours doing one section repeatedly, then claim they got there trough "skill". I can trash a lot of hard games, but I can admit that they suck when they have trial and error as a difficulty crutch.
Haha the fact he doesn't know who galactus is... good vid ryu!
Who all was it? Silver Surfer, Fantastic 4, and a view conflicts with Spiderman and Thor? Probably a few others that dedicated fans would know...
I was never big on any of them and still recognize a NES Galactus. Ryu deserves at least a little shaming for missing that one.

OMG!!!!! Finally. I have been waiting for you to play this game since you started this series!!! That is the one I could NEVER seem to beat. This is amazing.....
Thank you, Ryu! I couldn't even overcome a single section of a stage prior to your video, but now I have finally beaten this game! 😍
As a suggestion for future episodes, I'd love to see some other Contra games, like The Alien Wars and Hard Corps, Castlevania III, or of course some other insanely hard NES game like Battletoads 😂
Love this series. Love your commentary... has made me go back and revisit some of these 8bit games (I usually stay in 16bit land) that gave me issues when I was young and would rent a game and be stuck with it all weekend lol
Lots of interesting quotes in this one 🤨:

I love your channel man I was looking for like this kind of content cause I'm addicted to retro and 8-bit world
So after watching you DtD I decided to rewatch AVGN’s playthrough and laughed my ass off. We need to see your rendition of ‘sad’ Silver Surfer. 😂
I mean Bootsy could beat it too, just because some people are really good at video games doesn't mean it was cool of them to charge $50 (over 100 when adjusted for inflation) for a game no average person with a reasonable amount of free time could play long enough to be fun.
I will never look at Galactus again without thinking "Creepy dude in a sex mask" ahaahah! Ryu had me rolling!
Next up on Ryu Grumps: The entire Touhou series. Seriously though, well done, Ryu.
Your chill attitude makes these hard games look like a ton of fun.
Just beat this game tonight. Your videos are helping me beat some of the hardest nes games. This game is hard but it’s not as hard as some make it out to be.
I finished watching the cartoon series instead
dude, awesome video!!!, I failed hard at that game as a kid , will try it again with your tips :) thank goodness for emulators/ save states these days.
2:43 love that Yoshi SFX. Nice little edit!
I want to see Ryu do Top Gun just so I can see if there's ever anything interesting about Top Gun.
Glad I have another mainstay channel to look forward to.
Nice gameplay my friend. You got me to take a second look at a lot of retro games. One personal fave that I feel is difficult is Magician Lord on Neo Geo. Have you played that one? I love the graphics and music infinite continues and the challenge it’s just such a slog to get through I have yet to beat it. I start getting tired usually around lvl 6 great content man
Man I remember alot of these games in this debunk the difficulty series and never actually passed alot of them I'm glad I can watch it get owned by someone so I say now ty my good man you are doing God's work lol the rage I got as a kid is finally being relieved
YAY! Finally a new episode!
I truly love this series. Also these music on this game was just bangers.
It may take some time to get used to this game but at least you have a killer soundtrack to listen to. Tim Follin always made such wild tunes to listen to. I refer you to Solstice title theme (NES) and Pictionary (NES) for some more excellent Tim Follin music.
Gotta give credit to his brother Geoff, who also worked on this soundtrack.
Tim Follin is the NES sound chip's whisperer. Dude could make an NES sound like a full Synthesizer. (and Geoff)
He’s the GOAT, he was able to perfectly capture Thomas the Tank Engine theme on a SNES.
That is the same music as the Ljn Wolverine game. Really takes me back. That is another "hard" game, but not too bad if you know what to do in each level.
I played a lot of NES games as a kid but honestly this channel is the only place I have ever heard of this game. I guess I was too busy being terrible at Megaman.
As far as shmups go, this one is easy. Use a turbo controller first like Ryu said.
I’m so sorry, I’m not from the NES era… but man, I can’t imagine having to keep pressing the same button for the duration of the game. I seems… repetitive. Especially when powered up. That’s why there’s a turbo controller suggestion. xD
Great video as always! I guess I gotta try it myself some day. Watching it is one thing, that’s true.
Thanks for sharing!
I actually like this game quite a bit, but that's probably because I put in the work to be able to beat it consistently, lol. I agree that starting Reptyl is crucial to setting yourself up for success; it's unquestionably the easiest series of levels in the game, although sometimes a stray bullet in the second section can get you due to their occasional difficulty in being spotted through all the background noise.
Speaking of background noise, I haven't heard you touch on that yet (commenting as you're starting the Emperor levels), but that's one of the most trial and error elements of the game. The first time you go through any of the levels, it isn't always clear what you can pass through and what you can't so you're bound to lose some lives in the course of learning all that. What I eventually learned is that the rule of thumb is if you can't shoot through it, you will die if you touch it.
But in the end, I agree with your strategy of not dying, lmao. There are so many spots in this game where having to start over with no powerups might as well be a reset, partly because certain spots can be almost barren of powerups, some just have too many strong enemies, and some spots are combinations of both. (Edit: you make this statement almost verbatim about a minute after I resumed the video, lmao.)
I hadn’t realize that you could trap the final boss like that!
Yep, I’ve beaten the game like 10 times, and probably because I followed Bootsy’s tips originally, I never put 2+2 together on that strat.
While it is more crowd pleasing to dodge the projectiles, it’s not like the game doesn’t give you the powerups upon each death to sanction the strat…
They didn’t have to test the final boss because you’re the only person to make it that far.
What about Bootsy?
I'd love to see a debunking of Battletoads. Basically if it's really a matter of git gud or if there's some real tricks. Great series as always!
Didn't he do that already? I might be thinking of Vargskelethor.
@@PoisonedAl
He hasn't yet.
Possessor looks like Hitman Hart.
This is my new favorite series next to summoning salt speed runs.
Great video! This game seems to have the same innate philosophy as Gradius, Contra and other shooters. Basically, just stay powered up and you're pretty much golden!
Hopefully you got enough speed for the fast level in Gradius 3!
@@WickedTimeFox Aw, man. That triggered a memory locked away for me. You're in real trouble if you die in that level. You pretty much need Speed Ups to keep up with the auto-scrolling! It was a vicious cycle! 😅
Nice job on the show. I'm a fan.
I played this game and defeated every level but never all 5 levels at the same time and never saw the 6th. NGL, when I heard you say this is not that hard, I thought "WTF did this guy say?" and then you casually one shot the whole game with full powerups and I was like "oh, this guy is a legend." I'm definitely going to try this strategy when I get a chance.
I love to see you debunk the difficulty of sim ant
More Debunking the Difficulty Please!
A similar game for SNES called whip rush 2222 is pretty tough, even if keep all power ups. You need to change them in certain spots, you get lasers, missiles, and some stuff that lets you shoot in all directions. You need to memorize certain spots. That game is a lot harder then silver surfer.
i finished this game back in the day, i loved it
My god, your reflexes are INSANE. 😳
TLDR: You guys this game isn't hard. Just never die.
Please do Sunset Riders for the SNES! Awesome video!
I'm so close now to beating this nightmare of a game. I just need to master the last level. This video helped tremendously. Tonight might be the night
Hi Ryu, play with a Four Score, there you can activate turbo for any controller you connect into it, so you can keep using the regular control (D) pad 👍🏼
Great video! I know I never beat it as a kid, not for lack of trying, but a lot of stuff rang bells for me lol. Must've watched a playthrough at some point.
Could you do Street Fighter 2010?
Got a suggestion. You gotta cover “Jekyll and Hyde”. It needs to be in this playlist. ❤ your stuff. MM24EVR
He kind of inadvertently debunked Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. He covered it in his Extraordinarily Hard Games series on his other channel, and beat the game in one video.
Has he ever done Journey to Silius, Faxanadu, or Legacy of Wizard?
I seem to remember beating Silius ONCE back in the day, Faxanadu and Legacy of the Wizard I never completed, but they were fun to play.
The thing that always pissed me off about this game is that Silver Surfer is suppose to be one of the most powerful mfs in the entirety of Marvel but ONE hit takes hime out? Wielder of the power cosmic but a one lick from a damn frog kills him. I mean there's just two things TWO THINGS that would have made this a pretty good game. A health bar and holding the button to shoot.
Must be that frog with the power of Thor.
@@ItsMrBozToYou but SS would stomp Thor's ass.
Dude ur so chill....love ur content
The infamous Silver Surfer, let’s go!
Great episode.
You filled a big hole from my childhood. Thank you for that!
I only know two things about this game
-It's hard as hell
-the music goes hard as hell
i like how the last overhead stage has the music from SKY SHARK, the same guy did the music for both but i had to rewind a few times to make sure i was hearing it right
Having a turbo controller makes it a bit easier, my only issue was that Sliver Surfer's sprite was huge for some the levels.
What's impressive is Bootsy beat this casually with several deaths over his playthrough. You can't really expect a beginner to go through the whole game without a single death, especially with a game like this.
I tried playing Silver Surfer for the first time in years after watching Bootsy play through it so smoothly. He made it look easy; I got steamrolled.
Not to mention learning terrain, like what you could or couldn't bump into. Plus a beginner going to one of five stages makes things play out pretty differently. It's maybe not as hard as some people made it out to be, but idk if it'd call it easy either.
What ever happened to Bootsy? He only did like 2 episodes of Bootsy Beats
AVGN in shambles watchiing you play
Much Love Ryu!!!
Ya know, I have to say I'm impressed with some of the design in this game. Even as someone who's never played it before, it was extremely clear what was an obstacle, what was in the background, etc., which to me is pretty impressive for an 8-bit game with that much clutter in each level. They used the limited, binary controls to good advantage, as well, in designing some of the more challenging areas, where you need to squeeze through diagonal gaps. Good stuff!
It isn’t clear. Trust me. He has memorized the game.
Would love to see you do Paperboy. Another nightmare from my early childhood gaming days.
Started playing this game and I've honestly been really disappointed with how easy it is. I beat all but the last stage on one playthrough (Used all of my continues though, and I failed a bunch before but still.). I'm young enough to have never played Contra so I think I'll try it next.
Edit: So the "B" things are bombs, I was wondering what those did.
8:04 lol his innuendos are getting stronger
I'd like to see you play Solstice NES. I remember it as pretty hard to do platformingwise and having map knowledge with having no effing clue where to go, but I had a lot of fun playing it nut never made it to the end XD
Fire world bringing strong AVGN memories! - "I CAN'T TOUCH THAT RED POT!!!" 😅
Oh nice, I suggested this in the comments of your Ghost & Goblins video. Can I take credit for this? ;)
I could never complete the game, but i could complete the Reptyl and Mephisto levels. A hard game, but not a game that was too hard or impossible, it just required practice. I liked Silver Surfer because it was exciting, it would have you on edge of seat the whole level.
The key is to get used to surviving all of the check points. Aka, when you lose a life and start back with no power ups. It can be a VERY difficult 15 to 30 seconds to survive until you power up again.
Hell yeah. I love this series.
each time you say "firelord" and not continue with "ozai" appa gets sad and cries =(
9:26 i can't touch that red pot???😂
Thanks for debunking! Years after writing the game I heard that many people considered the game to be difficult. I guess it was word of mouth that spread the false rumour.
Nope, this game is _in fact_ extremely difficult to almost everyone who plays it;
if you find it "easy" then you are in the minority.
And yes, I have beaten it multiple times without cheating, but I am not trying to pretend that it is "easy" just because I have mastered it.
3:15 you seem like you've done this before...
I remember The Addams Family game being treacherous. I would love to see that one debunked........since I never beat it.
Hell yes
He didn't notice his score at the end of the game! 69~ Nice.
“There’s a sexy naked statue there to distract you.” 😂
This Is one of my favorite NES games. There was another game that came out the same year that is very similar Called Burai Fighter that I played the hell out of.
I never realized this was considered a difficult game, I didn't think it was that difficult. I finished this game several times in one sitting (not the first time through). Make sure you get your power ups, and you can just plow through everything
