- In this video we removed the rear model a leaf spring from the single seater speedster. Reverse the main spring eyes and re-shape the spring pack to relate the shape of a Ford model T rear spring. With this setup we achieved to lower the rear portion of the chassis 100mm or 4 inches.

Fantastic! Thank you so much for that one Jordan! Since 1949 when I started reading my father's HOT ROD magazines, I have never seen or heard how to reverse spring eyes! Since that was what it was called, I just always assumed that they literaly straightened them out and re-rolled them the other direction......using heat. :) I would also never thought about re-contouring a spring using a bottle jack. Here in Indiana we re-contoured springs on the ends to lower them using a torch. I know BADDDD, but I never had a problem. I am hoping to start a lakes roadster project, since I have been watching all you young fellows having so much fun, :) so I best buy a bottle jack! :) Thanks for the videos and all the best to ya!
I have a T spring with very second leaf removed in the rear of my roadster pickup, it lowered it about 2 inches . It still rides great.
Brings back memories of playing with leaf springs on a Suzuki Sierra I use to have. I had everyone telling me you can't just cut leaves and reshape them without using heat lol. I did end up getting a minor bend in my main leaves though after I had them extended without extending the secondary leaf as well. I certainly wish I had found this video years ago.

Leaf springs are awesome. Used to build 4x4 trucks and always modified my leaf they would flex almost the same as many linked ones too

I reversed one 1932 Ford spring but I did not reshape it and did not get it low enough. I then modified the rear cross member with 1935 axle and spring. You really nailed the shape of the spring. 👍

Wow, I had no idea that you could cold work springs like that. I always imagined that kind of operation would require annealing first, or maybe hot working, and then re-heat treating the springs. Thanks for sharing this!

Youd be stiffening the spring somwhat as you do that too (work hardening). No idea how much. Itd be interesting to do a weight test on it before and after to see the difference.

This might be a daft question, but here goes! You lowered the back end by 100mm. About 25mm of that came from reversing the spring with the other 75 from reprofiling. However, that meant you had to straighten the spring first and then rework it in the other direction. Couldn't you have got the full 100mm by NOT reversing it but simply reprofiling the centre and bending the ends up more? It would have involved less work and minimised any work-hardening of the metal.

Good to see the apprentice watching the master!! I always thought setting up springs was very specialist, but may be the sat out ones on my Plymouth could be adjusted... have to think about it.

You talked about putting packers on top of the spring to replace the ones taken out.
Surely that would raise the chassis back up again.
Your packers would be better under the spring.
This would lower the frame.
Only have one on the top and the rest of the packers sit on the bottom to make sure as you said to keep the ride height where we want it

Great tutorial, I am amazed how easily those 90ish year old springs came apart and could be reshaped cold, they must have used good steel.... I wouldn't like to try that with a modern spring. What's the old red motorbike in the background?
The owner or owners of the chassis definitely took good care of it, lots of grease between each spring, really clean metal- no pitting. Very refreshing
Hi there great work but don't you need to change the profile in the rear cross member now to follow the profile of the model T spring as the model T spring won't fit the model A cross member profile properly.
Yes and no, because it’s cut and shortened the profile fits really well. Still allowing enough area for suspension travel

I could never understand why anyone would want keep a buggy spring and have that hayride on their rod instead of installing coil over adjustable shocks . In some of my first attemps at rod building I thought my neck had been broken from my head hitting the roof from a bad bump in the road . The vintage look comes with downfalls in todays traffic .

@@bennettscustomsco I just thought any spring these days has a hardness that wouldn't allow such reshaping. Maybe all the springs were softer back then. I know metallurgy has come a long way. I have no experience with model A or Ts, and I know they were built to a price. I'm loving your channel by the way. I'm sorry if I came off as a smartass.
