      These platinum rated power supplies have a coil whine problem with the latest and greatest GPUs and Great Wall is a great whiner lol. They make great power supplies and both the Asus and Corsair are Great Wall produced.

    Hello, how are you? Thank you for this wonderful video. I have a Corsair RM1000e and it makes an annoying noise during idle which is really noticeable, but what is making me consider returning it is my fear of this problem getting worse in the future. My question is, is this problem worth returning the product to the seller? Or will this voice not rise in the future? Or will it pose a risk to my computer?

    • @sparketech

      RM1000 PSU is one of the most commonly complained about PSUs for coil whine. A Google search is likely to give you many results confirming this.. I personally HATE coil whine, your computer would probably be fine BUT personally I would go for a different PSU. My EVGA Supernova has zero idle coil whine. I returned the Loki and I have the SF850L sitting in a box cause the very high pitched whine was hurting my ears... I have super crazy good hearing mind you. If we put up with coil whine then companies are going to keep thinking it's okay. if your system is high power draw even when idle coil whine Is more likely.

      @@sparketech I am really disappointed. I did not think that Corsair was this bad. The power supply has been installed literally since it was installed and the sound has been coming from it. I am now trying in any way to put a load in the background to make the sound disappear. Do you recommend the asus tuf 1000w power supply?

      @@abunaser2804 I never used Asus TUF and I don't remember seeing any Asus TUF comments on coil whine. So you know Corsair, Asus, gigabyte none of them make their own PSUs. Corsair uses Great wall and so does the Asus Loki. EVGA makes their own, seasonic also makes their own PSUs

      @@sparketech Yes I heard this. If Asus and Corsair have their internal hardware from the same company, does that mean Asus will have the same issue as well? Since the most available power supplies in my area are Corsair and Asus, I have no other options but to wait longer for other brands like evga and others.

      @@abunaser2804 I purchased 5 power supplies, all the great wall had bad whine, some worse than others mind you but all of them had idle whine. The EVGA still has some whine with the 4070 when gaming cause the 4070 is well just bad for that but zero whine when idle. Asus is either great wall or Seasonic made. The Asus Tuf looks good overall when seeing reviews but one person did comment "REALY" loud cooling fan. Hello, great video and well explained but I have one question. I want to get the 1200w version, there is only one problem, the psu is great but it is SFX-L, I am using a Cougar Conquer 2 pc case which is a full tower case, do you think the cables are long enough for this build ?.. @@robertgeorge9063 I am working out of town with no computer access so without looking the Corsair cables being short have a LOT of complaints from people with full tower cases. I also much prefer my EVGA Supernova G2 power supply over the Corsair which I am currently using. I have it in SFX but it also comes in ATX with longer cables and apparently even less coil whine.

  • @maccodj

    Before you buy:
    Cables are FAR too short, they provide you with an adaptor to fix in bigger cases, and guess what, all cables are the wrong size!
    The connectors coming out from the power supply are FAR too small, they are not the standard same connector size as the ones going to motherboards for example, they are HALF THE SIZE, find replacement!
    Returned, I said I won't buy COrsair again some years ago and yet I'm an idiot!

      Corsair Type 5 cables are needed for the SFX-L (SF850L and SF1000L) You can order longer Type 5 cables for the psu in a larger case.
      Or just avoid for non-SFF cases
      Normal ATX RMx series Corsair are usually type 4

    I just ordered the SF850L a half hour ago to replace my RM850X in my Lian Li 011 Air Mini. I don't care about the PSU making coil whine because I'm not going to hear it over my case fans lol. I do have a question though. I have some custom sleeved CableMod cables that I'm using with my RM850X, am I going to be able to use those cables with this new SF850L PSU? If not, I'm going to be kind of pissed considering I paid about $225.00 for the cables last year.

      I don't know, generally you'd think Corsair would be compatible with corsair... The coil whine would depend on the GPU used... I'm using the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 GM SFX PSU no longer have high pitched whine noise when idle... You'd likely never hear the whine over loud fans, you should be fine... Corsair also has loud PSU cooling fans, I replaced mine with a Noctua... My SF850L I still own, it is sitting in a box.

      @@hassanbukhari9841 it's supports ATX PSUs. I had a Corsair rm850x and it fit fine. I recently bought a smaller PSU though so I'd have more room for cable management, but the regular ATX PSU fit with no problems at all. You might be thinking of the 011 mini, that one only supports ATX, but the 011 air mini supports both. Also just to know the 3.5 HDD cage in the air mini is not removable so that's going to limit your room for cables.

      Corsair también fabrica la misma fuente de alimentación más pequeña con la L. Tenía 2 de ellas, pero el ruido es horrible.

    So I guess coil whine is normal? I mean I hear it from far and I have a be quiet pure power 12 m 750w gold. Got a rx 6750 xt and it got x2 8 pin connectors. When Im in games the coil whine goes wild. Probably I hear it because I got the pc on my desk.
    Edit:Also what psu do you use?
    And what psu you recommand for my rx 6750 xt?

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech  9 місяців тому +1

      Problem is the GPU tends to be what is causing coil whine. I tried 4 PSUs and all had some form of coil whine with different tones. If I had a GTX1070 there would be zero coil whine but these newer GPUs with higher power draw and fast switching speeds really make whine happen.

      @@sparketech hello is rtx 4060 can also cause coil whine? or just RTX 4070 and above?

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech  9 місяців тому +1

      @@murazakii3032 depends on computer as a whole... the lower the GPU power draw generally the less coil whine so 4060 is going to have reduced whine compared to a 4070. The 4000 series have very fast switching speeds compared to a GTX1000 so even a 1080TI isn't likely to have the same whine as these newer cards.

    my corsair hx750 has coil whine that is killing me. Do you know why? its a platinum rating that was advised as silent.

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech  8 місяців тому

      One word, GPU. I am finding no such thing as a high efficiency PSU being silent with modern GPUs. What is silent about them normally is "fan" noise because of low heat. The problem is high efficiency is also less power filtering. Power filter stages waste power but at the cost of having less ripple and resonance causing that whine. The cost to fix the issue isn't worth it for almost anyone in the industry. But you can under volt the GPU, lock down the FPS, lot down the max speed of the GPU to stop switching and or get a larger PSU can sometimes help if the extra filtering was placed to compensate. Corsairs are particularly noisy. I have my SF850L back in the box their was a very high pitched noise even when idle and it drove me nuts... I also have pretty much super hearing but that's a different issue lol

    Hi I was wondering which cables to use for the 4070 ti? Should I use the splitter or just go straight to gpu with the 600w connection

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech  6 місяців тому

      It will not matter which cables to use. It is the card itself pin out that matters. I would just go straight to the GPU but when in doubt try both when gaming and listen and likely "record" the sound level at the same locations to see if there is any whine difference. I love my EVGA SuperNova 850w SFX PSU no more high pitched idle noise.

    I was interested in buying Loki PSU, and am curious if there are any case support limitations. The store I am configuring my parts says that NZXT H7 for example does not. Could you please clarify that for me?
    P.S. The store also highlights H7 being v1, 2022

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech  Рік тому +1

      Any normal modern case would support either of these power supplies as long as it isn't SFX. Both of these power supplies have an SFX to ATX adapter and these both have standard motherboard headers and both have standard power supply connectors. My only concern for the Loki is if you plan to use the RGB because only Asus aura sync and an ARGB type headers to the motherboard will work for that part.
      I think the store is doing more "assuming" than anything. I can stick the Loki into a computer case from 10 yrs ago.

      I hadn't even noticed that option. Amazon USA reviews 7% are 1 star and it looks like all other than one saying loud fan faced easily PSU death. I live in Canada, none of the places I shop normally at Newegg, Memory Express and for PSU not so much Amazon Canada.
      Newegg USA 1 out of 5 star 14% Dead PSU problems... People either like it or it dies It seems to be a common theme. Don't think I want to risk my computer parts... On the other hand Anandtech reports excellent voltage regulations which should technically mean very little coil whine... Can anyone confirm?

      I am using an EVGA superNova these days. Lowest idle noise of the 5 SFX models I tested but still some coil whine under load specifically with the high coil whine Asus RTX4070. All out of pocket cost... The ATX supernova version someone else reported no coil whine.

      @sparketech  7 місяців тому

      @@justeddm the problem isn't about good enough. It is what GPU you are using in this test. My favorite is the Supernova, for coil noise Corsair products and what people have commented are just very noisy in general but for the SF series has at least been very reliable but loud fans so I always changed my fans out. Asus Loki is made by the same factory as the Corsair SF series. Should be reliable and fairly silent fans but for me the idle high pitch noise with my ears I can't do it, the SF850L was also very bad for me. I could swear my SF750 SFX had less coil whine than the SF850L. If you want a recommendation EVGA Supernova, that is what I have and am using cause it isn't annoying me like the others. Fan noise is half way between when the fan does run but like the other PSUs it only runs after a certain amount of load or heat so for me with my 65watt low power CPU. Fan never runs.
