      This channel puts Dave2d to complete and utter shame. I mean just compare the two with their 3080 reviews. Dave2d just managed to gloss over thermals and noise. I get it most people doesn't have the attention span to watch super technical stuff like Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed with their 30min videos (which I love) and prefer the aesthetically pleasing catered down stuff like Dave2d but this guy is on another level. He has all of the cinematics and minimal design of Dave2d while being well more informative and capable of catering to both the casuals and the enthusiasts.

    • @SpaceLion949
      @SpaceLion949 2 роки тому +1

      It's going to run fine short term, sure, but you are putting a lot of stress of the components of the PSU. Long term it might be a different story, that should be a consideration.

    • @SpaceLion949
      @SpaceLion949 2 роки тому +1

      @p It will be generally fine for most application, but you could encounter a game or program such as Doom Eternal that makes the GPU have a power spike that last in the order of micro seconds. Very short, which is not enough to affect average power consumption, but it could be enough to trip your PSU overpower protection. Both components would be working as intended, however, you could have a bad experience. That's why it is mostly recommended to buy an oversized PSU. If someday, GPUs no longer present such behavior, then you could do just fine with a 600W unit.
      In regard to how good that specific SF600 plat model is, I wouldn't know unless you tell me the brand and specific model name, so I could research. I wish choosing a PSU was as easy as looking at the 80 plus certification, but sadly is actually a more complicated topic.

      The SFF is a form factor, it has NOTHING to do with power ratings... he could have run all of these tests on ATX form factor PSUs and the results would be applicable to every SFF form factor PSU out there. It was pointless to specify that this was an SFF form factor video, because it has nothing to do with the testing or results in this test.

    • @billycaves7194
      @billycaves7194 3 роки тому +1

      @@wolfshanze5980 Except it isn’t pointless. I bought a Silverstone 600 watt SFX power supply for good chunk of change when that was the MOST power SFX power supplies could, well, supply. This was a PARTICULAR power limit to the SFF community as it was developing as you could already get 1000 watt ATX supplies for cheaper than what I paid. Many, many people bought the same exact power supply I did. Upgrading now to the recommended minimum 750 watts for the 3080 would cost $130-250 for an SFX format power supply depending on brand, which compares to as low as like $50 for a reliable ATX power supply if you didn’t buy a big one the first time.
      It effects a higher percent of the SFF community and the effect would be more expensive to the SFF community.

Then I started getting weird crashes, lag spikes, and my SSD fried along with the sata port it was plugged into. Switched to corsair 600watt and no more problems (except my dead ssd and sata port). It was a PITA to diagnose this problem. I'd go for the 750 watt if I was going to do this. Its really not worth the time and money you might end up spending. JM2C.

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 4 роки тому +1

      420 watts from the wall AIN'T 420 watts in your system. the gold, bronze, white rating on PSUs denote EFFICIENCY. assuming you using a gold one & drawing 420 watts, you'd only be feeding 90 PERCENT of that AT BEST, which is 378 watts, to your system, which in turns means that your PSU would need to draw to the VERY LIMIT to provide just 405 watts. you're practically already straining your PSU despite numbers at the wall telling you that you still have room. it's lucky in your case that shit only happens after a year.

      It won't last. You run a small PSU hard, especially with such rapid and strong power draw of a GPU like the 3080 and you will eventually get voltage droop as the PSU falls out of spec faster. Shutdown. The newer Corsair stuff is built well with great ripple control, regulation etc and overbuilt but it's not a licence to abuse the hell out it and expect it to last.

    This is a big issue that people haven't really covered yet because nobody can get the cards.
    I have a new card RX 6800 XT MSI Gaming Trio X and my EVGA 750W Supernova G2 crashes due to power draw with a stock clock Ryzen 5600x and x570 mb. Most 3080s are more intensive. Lots of people are complaining of crashes. Many with 850W PSUs even. I encourage you to keep doing this type of content because people don't even know what to buy to fix their issue.
    The other issue is power spikes caused at some points in games that are intensive with graphics or loading content. These transient spikes can be up to double what the card is normally doing.
    I find the best one for me to try on is Elite Dangerous when jumping systems. If you run at 1440p, 120hz, ULTRA, 2xMSAA it will crash to reboot about 30%-50% of the time.

    I'm running a rather new 80+ Gold Corsair TX550W PSU I guess I'm fine with the 3080 as my OCed 8700K draws about 50W less than that 10900k beast used here. Also: power draw on the wall is not actual power the PSU is providing, so having a 600W PSU pulling 600W from the wall probalby translates to it delivering about 550W of power instead. It "loses" electricity in the conversion process. Saving about 30W is great though, I will definitely undervolt my 3080 if I ever get one that is...

I did forget to mention that I'm on 230Vac (similar to Ali who's in Australia). Both of us get a slightly more efficient curve up to 94% peak (which I rounded to 95%) and staying above 90% under any significant loads all the way to max rating. Any non plat supply will definitely be lower though, especially his RM850x which he first presented as baseline, although he did a cursory mention of having observed spikes above 600W on the SF600 power supplies he tested.

      This is not how you measure the power delivered by the PSU, the measure at the wall is the total consumption including the efficiency of the PSU. Assuming a 80% efficiency you can multiply the measurement by 0.8 to get a rough idea of how much the pc is consuming... But even then it's not ideal, because the efficiency/power draw curve isn't linear.

    600watt might be fine for a while.. However I have this same exact dilemma when I was upgrading my GPU to a Vega 64. AMD also reccomending 750watt PSU but lots of people on the internet saying 600watt is enough for that GPU (My system is an itx i7 8700k non OC with corsair SF600 gold psu)
    After running the card for almost a year suddenly I encounter many sudden crash when loading a game or during the gameplay that prompt the system to trip. Since then I upgrade to an SF750 and have no problem.
    I think it’s safer to run a GPU with a PSU wattage that are reccomended by vendor.. Not only for the piece of mind but for a quiter system. imo as long as the power drawn from the PSU is around 80% of the PSU maximum power it is safe for the long run... Just my two cents ✌️

Never had issues with a Corsair RM650i. … I did however after one year, buy a Corsair HX750i, because it was a platinum rated PSU. It would also run my power consumption more in its middle range than the 650W. … Anyway am set for whatever comes, and I have a back up PSU that I can swap out easy. @@sendhelp3828 Yeah the Corsair RM650i and HX750i which I have are modular. The cables were not old by any means. Neither are they dirty, because I use a case with filtered air-intakes. Inside my PC is clean, and it only ever gets at worst, a fine layer of dust. Then I just vac it, because I clean my CPU tower at least every year. Plus I go in my PC case often to do something or other, and if there is dust I clean. There is no harm at all leaving cables from one PSU in place to use with another PSU. The HX750i has ribbon cabling, compared to round cables on the RM650i, but that doesn't make any difference.
      Afterthought. I suppose it would be a good idea to swap the cables for the GPU over. Since the HX750i GPU cables are possibly designed to take more current. At the moment I still have my 1080Ti in place, which was running on the old PSU and its cables. However the likelihood that the RM650i cables can't carry the current that the HX750i can, is slim. Better to swap them over when I get a new GPU though. Better to be safe than sorry. Yeah, thank you for leaving a message for me, otherwise I might never have thought to change GPU cables.

      You're wrong about power draw. If a PSU is rated at 600W it doesn't mean it can draw maximum 600W from the wall, it means it can output maximum 600W so it actually draws more than 600W from the wall. If the efficiency is 92% it means it draws 652W from the wall and outputs 600W, not it draws 600W from the wall and outputs 552W.

      No you can not say that. He didn't do the proper testing. Igorlabs.de has proven that the RTX 3080 (read: graphics card only) over a duration of 1ms can pull a peak power consumption of 500 watts. That's lab tested with certified top-tier professional equipment...

      @@detmer87 First of all, PEAK power ain't equal to SUSTAINED power draw. decent PSU could easily handle that kinda occasional spikes without problems.
      Second, MOST people AIN'T gonna go near that kind of power requirement. it's outright erroneous to think that MOST who get such high end cards to put them through all sorts of torture & punishments.
      Third, the thread is in ENGLISH & you brought a link of a video in GERMAN. how would you expect most here to understand your point, if the source that you told them to go look at, ain't even in a language they speak??

      Don't worry about it. I was like that. I used to play the games my system could play on budget hardware. (I first played Crysis on an E6700 CPU, a GT 320 with 1GB vRAM, and 2GB of system RAM.) Then when I upgraded to another budget system, I would again play the games I could. There's nothing wrong with running behind like that. I found it made me appreciate games a lot, because I would replay many, many times. I would always be really happy to upgrade again. Then I could play the games I had waited a long time to run. Also with buying games significantly after release, it meant they were cheap. Meaning if the game was rubbish, it never mattered. Going back to me playing Crysis, I think I paid about £3 for it.
      In effect I still like to buy my games cheap, so I can spend money on the hardware to run them. Like at the moment I have a 1080 Ti running at 1440p. However I still have not bought RDR2, or Shadow of the TR.

      If a 600w PSU can run a RTX 3080 just fine, it would mean having no problems running 3070 & 3060. a good half, if not most, who're watching videos like this are out to get info like what i just mentioned. most people ain't loaded enough to get a 3080 after all, & if it's affordable enough that everyone can get their hands on one, it won't be premium high end stuff to begin with.

    That's what I thought. I'm running an Antec 650w Platinum.
    However if your PSU is some years old I would recommend blowing out the dust with a compressed air line or an air can etc if you can one way or another, ideally without opening it up as the bigger Caps are really rather dangerous. I had a Seasonic some years back that was a few years old, my case had dust filters and when I looked through the PSU's mesh it looked really clean inside. Then one night it went POP and released foul smelling fumes...
    Turns out some super fine lint had collected in a corner out of sight covering a choke and some caps and cooked them till they popped !

    To be fair, peak power and continuous are usually pretty different for most PSU's.
    Also, a properly decent 550W power supply should be able to run this just fine like the Fractal Ion+ 560w. Chances are it will be just fine.
    Especially considering most power supplies are pretty crap inside despite being 500 or 600 or even 1000 watt models.

      Your system should pull a decent amount less than his due to the CPU. I think under extreme load it might be close, but really, I feel like it should be fine.
      You can always test it and if you run into issues, probably a sign to upgrade.

    Not exactly surprising results since both those SF600 units OPP only kicks in above 800W and temps will stay under control even at 700W continuous draw, while the SF450 will have OPP already kicking in around 600W. Good to know either way. Appreciate the test/video.

    I've revisited this video (liked and subscribed) now having an RTX3080 TUF 12gb and currently run a 760ax power supply from Corsair. This video is incredibly informative. Is there reasoning behind the recommended power supply? I assume this is based on a maximum or average power draw? My system is an older build but still runs very well. cpu i7-4790k and a gtx1070. I plan to build a new amd system with this GPU but I want to start using it now and also to validate my GPU is working ootb. Thank again for the video!

    FWIW: Running a Corsair SF600 gold and a 3080 FE undervolted to run about 240-260W total board power with a stock Ryzen 5900X).. it works, but the PSU fan gets fairly loud in a demanding game like Flight Simulator 2020. Looking to get a SF750 platinum in hopes that will quiet down my setup again.

  • @mhamma6560

    OT -- There's a common theme among people reducing voltage settings using the curve graph and considering it an undervolt. That however is not the case as is witnessed using the the "test" feature in afterburner -- loads that fully utilize the GPU (as seen in scan tests 3 and 4) will by nature reduce voltage as the reduction is a result of the full power draw of the GPU / RAM (think of it as vdroop), thus lowering the curve to a voltage doesn't actually reduce power load as it would already droop to the lower voltage. A proper current limiting setup would see the "power limit" adjusted to reduce the wattage the GPU will utilize. On laptops where this cannot be adjusted, reducing the freq to a voltage limit will work to some degree, but under heavy load, the GPU will be running the higher frequency at a lower voltage anyway. For desktops and units with the power limit feature, that will reduce the wattage as desired. Laptops however need to use a combination of lowering the frequency / voltage graph and reducing the clock speed--even better if the user can find a GPU bios with a lower power limit already set in it (this works in reverse too as my A15 has a 115w bios loaded in the 2060 as I've upgraded the cooling) but I digress. On my 1660ti and 2070s desktop units, simply reducing the power limit reduces the cards wattage. Using afterburner, lower the power limit and then run the scan feature so it will automatically clock the card appropriately based on how much of the GPU is being utilized for the given wattage you're allowing it to pull.

    I am running a 750w OCZ bronze rated PSU and it has no issues what so ever running my 8700K at 4.8GHz with my PNY RTX 3090 XLR8 at 1850Mhz... I have run every stress test and it runs flawlessly, no crashes at all.
    I am pulling 580-620w from the wall during these tests.
    I would say you can get away with a 650-700w PSU but only if its Gold rated and above with a 3090... But that would depend on your OC on both your CPU/GPU.
    Personally I would recommend a 700w for a 3080 and a 750w for a 3090 system, you want that 50-100w headroom for spikes.

    To be safe and not constrained I would still opt for the 750. Also power supply after long time and use might not be as stable as they were new although even good quality 600w models have some power budget reserves beyond the 600w rated. Thanks I'll keep it in mind when I will build small form factor PC next year for gaming on my TV.
