I absolutely loved playing these games as a kid! My gramma and I played the first few together and we literally made paper maps to remember which spot we were at! We were never able to get the 5th game to work properly! Something was wrong with the disk! We tried, tried again...but the files were corrupt and just would NOT load. So we skipped that and moved on. I really wish I could have played this with her because I got kicked off the family tree and haven't seen her in years. Some of my best memories though! "Gramma! Hell yeah. Of course, Hands DOWN King's Quest VI is not only the best in the series but my favorite childhood game (of this early CD-ROM type) EVER. What a classic. Don't forget the absolutely awesome soundtrack with "Girl in the Tower." So epically nostalgic.
Great video. It makes me want to take another look at the KQ2 remake. Your audio is VERY quiet (relative to other videos), though. Might want to adjust that for future videos. Keep up the good work!
True, I've been noticing that as well vs the audio. In general your audio is quite low, but it sure beats too loud, but as im on my laptop with built-in speakers most of your videos are quite low even on 100%.
I remember playing it many years ago and liking it! Although it does have the cliche "one guard who tells the truth and one guy who lies" thing from Labyrinth lol
I'm glad you have KQ7 in the middle of the pack where it rightly belongs, I thought for sure it would be on the bottom somewhere. I personally would've loved to see Kings Quest get more iterations in that animated style. I think if Sierra had done that and really refined that technology they would've stayed successful for a lot longer. They failed with KQ8 because for the first time they decided to be something that just isn't them.
I really enjoyed the ADG remake of KQ3 even if I had to have a walk-though by my side for the most of the play-through :) By yeah, it is really sadistic and evil. I can't imagine playing this without a guide.
It’s a shame a lot of people thought KQ3 was difficult because it’s by far my favourite. Maybe because I can remember spending a whole summer playing it in the evenings, trying to solve all the puzzles
I wanted to enjoy TOG's game, but while there are some elements to it that I enjoy still, it really irritates me how they retconned the KQ3 ending, as well as the entirety of KQ4.
I am happy to hear 6 is the best. I am half way through the King's Quest Floating Castle book and it is fantastic. Prince Alexander is the main character and a good one at that. I only ever played KQ5 but am looking to try the others for wholesome entertainment.
Hi 😉Are you interested in the previous development stages of Kings Quest 8? If so, you might be interested in a video that I just uploaded. There you can check out the various alpha versions of the game, all of which date from 1996 - 1997. The game has changed a lot over these years.......
King's quest 6 was the first King's Quest game I ever played. Before that the only adventure games I tried were Quest For Glory "So You Want To Be A Hero" and Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail. Also text adventures. I'll never forget King's Quest 6 though. The Windows version was slightly better because of the character portraits.
While I was never a huge fan of KQ (was more a fan of CoC, CotL, QFG, SQ, PQ, and GK), KQ6 is my fave, by far! I never tried the VGA versions of 1-3: only the EGA versions of 1-4, floppy disk version of KQ5 (no voice acting), and CD version of KQ6. Yet KQ6 was my fave, but far; actually it might be the only KQ I tried that I actually loved.
@@AdventureGameHotspot Just the first one: Sins of the Fathers (1993) and not the remake. I really think Sierra peaked in terms of their 200p VGA art style in GK1 along with KQ5-6, CotL (Conquests of the Longbow), QFG 3, and the Dagger of Amon Ra -- along with a few others. I wish they stuck to that art style instead of going past it to 3D, FMV, and very cartoony routes. I thought it was the perfect style to suit more serious tones but still not so realistic that they couldn't have some wacky and humorous animations and moments on top. For me, that was the golden age of Sierra when I thought they really came into their own with a very distinctive art style which branded their VGA titles where I could take one glance at the screen -- even devoid of UI elements -- and tell it was a Sierra game. LucasFilm peaked to me earlier in the EGA era with EGA Loom and TSoMI.
@@AdventureGameHotspot I think on further thought and revisiting GK2 a little bit, it wasn't just the FMV graphics that sort of put me off. As with Phantasmagoria, they really simplified the point-and-click interface so that we're no longer able to choose what type of interaction we want to perform with an object. If I click on a person, I always speak to them IIRC. It was only in using items that I could try something different. So much of my sense of freedom and fun in an adventure game is trying all sorts of things with the same object that don't even necessarily further progress, like trying to use the "OPEN" command on an attractive woman in GK1 and getting a funny response from Tim Curry about the sexual nature of what I'm suggesting Gabriel does. 😅So much of the fun of exploring the game for me comes from being able to try such things and getting interesting responses from the game, and much of that is ruined if the devs restrict me to only one type of interaction with a particular scene object. PQ4 was the one FMV Sierra game I tried that I enjoyed fairly well (wasn't my favorite, but I liked it much more than Phantasmagoria and GK2). They still simplified the interface a lot outside of item use to just walk/look/use/talk, but that still gave me substantially more things to try in comparison and a greater sense like I'm not just brute force clicking on every single interactive thing in a scene but having to stop and think at least a little bit about what I want to try to do with it first. My absolute fave outside of parser was QFG 3, and I think because they gave us so many point-and-click commands. It wasn't just look/use/walk/talk, but I could also run, sneak, jump, sleep, cast spells, and many of the items had a very generalized use which made them feel more like new commands rather than a "key to a specific door" (grappling hook, throwing knives, rocks, our main weapon, lockpicks, etc). I think I really like that; I don't like extremely streamlined and simplified point-and-click interfaces since I lose that sense of exploring what I can do in a scene.
I think your list matches my one pretty closely - though I've only played 2 episodes of 2015s so I can't say for sure on that one. Do you prefer KQ1 AGI as a game to the remake and all the games prior on the list (I prefer the parser interface generally, but this one's pretty basic), or are you boosting it's rank to honor it being a "game changer"? Also, there's 2 you left out: where would you rank the Sierra remake of KQ1 and Infamous Adventures KQ3?
Hi Magus. I think if the games are relatively even on the entertainment value that the pathfinding aspect gets the nod. I didn't want to rank infamous because I didn't want people to think I'm partial 🤪
