So you have a new serger and if you are lucky, like mine, it came pre-threaded and tested and ready to use. You are keen to give it a whirl, get practicing with your sergering, but again, like me, you might be nervous about taking out those threads just in case you can't rethread it again and then you are stuck.
Or maybe you just want a quick and easy way to rethread and know that it's going to work just fine without starting again from scratch. So let's cheat and rethread our serger the lazy way!
We can simply pull through some new threads without taking out the old ones, and then we'll KNOW that it's still threaded correctly and can just sew away.
Specifically featuring the Brother 1034D serger, but the same principle applies to any serger. Two different methods shown.

Huh. That double-square knot is interesting! I've always just used a regular square knot (which is simply RIGHT OVER LEFT, then LEFT OVER RIGHT.) Also, I don't change my tensions: I just square-knot the new threads, and let the new color run through as I hold the tail. Works about 99% of the time; even through both needles. (Only once in a while the thread will break at the needle point, and then it's just a simple re-thread right at that point.) Great video though.... thank you! I love my Brother 1034D serger!

This must be helping some people, but to me, the 2nd method in particular is total madness - virtually taking the machine apart and unhooking the threads internally, removing the stitch finger etc. Each to their own but this is much more difficult and complex than just rethreading it, and actually gives the impression that you have to be able to do this to change the thread. Not so. There's a very easy and simple rethreading procedure. When I first got my 1034D, like everyone else I was intimidated by the idea of rethreading. At first I had to follow the book instructions, but now I can do it really quickly - there are instructions on the inside of the machine. It's just practice and getting used to it. So I would advise everyone to bite the bullet and just put in the practice.
Melanie Maguire I agree!!! I just got my serger, been using it less than a week & I can change all 4 threads in less than 2 minutes!! This method seems like so much more work!! And with this method you're cutting the 3rd and 4th threads and rethreading them through the needles anyways- which is the hardest part of even threading those 2 needles!! Why go through all the trouble of tying knots when it would take you literally less time to just follow the guides and thread them on the machine. I can kinda understand the Upper and Lower Loopers as they are the "harder" ones to thread, but like you said people should just take the time to learn to thread their sergers.! It's not hard! There's the book the machine came with, a color coded (& Numbered!) guide printed inside the machine and a ton of UA-cam videos showing how to do it!
There are comments from people thinking this IS how you thread a serger.
Once you learn how to properly thread your serger, this method could be used occasionally, so I'm glad I learned it's an option, but for the most part, I'll still stick with threading it the regular way.

Thank you so much for these tutorials on the 1034D. I received my machine in 2011, and it's pretty much sat there all by itself since then. Your video's have given me hope! LOL. I looked but did not see any other 1034D videos from you. Do you plan to do any video's showing us more about how to actually use the machine? I have the manual, but you explain things and show things close up, which is so much more user friendly than a manual. I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping you will make additional videos for the 1034D. Many Thanks!

May I ask...since you got your serger...what accessories or attachments have you found most necessary to purchase (i.e. what was necessary vs what was desirable of the things you purchased for your serger) Hope this makes sense...lol...Thanks for all your insight and instruction...it has helped me soooo much...it's like having a great friend with you as you learn and I appreciate ya! Hi Deby are these machines very good I had read reviews most say they are brilliant some say not I am a single mum of three on benefits I have been saving for almost a year now I recently inherited lots of fabric I want to make some clothes for my children I don't want to waste my money I was an industrial overlocker for 20 yrs I would dearly love an industrial one but they are so expensive and I don't have the room
Jules Shultz I've only had it since Christmas but been delighted with it. I can't compare it to others, especially industrial machines since I've never used one, but I'm assuming its the most popular serger on the market for a reason.
I have this Overlocker and if it wasn't for your tutorial on threading I would still be playing about with it getting frustrated with it.

'Fraid I'm not a lover of Facebook but maybe I should join the social media revolution. I've just discovered that my 2yr old Janome has a very similar facility but without the cutting and I also discovered that I bought an overcast foot as part of a set, just didn't know what it was!
